Watch Trailer’s for Lance Bangs’ “Flophouse” Where He Explores the Comedy Underground

Since time immemorial, comedians have often lived together in what many would considered cramped, messy, and raucous living situations. Comedians, for the most part, think it’s just fine.

In this latest golden era of comedy, there’s a whole new excitement brewing in the underground and, with the aid of the Internet, it’s not quite as underground (i.e. no one has ever heard of it) as it used to be.

Lance Bangs explores this subculture that’s bridging its way to the big time, though, on its own terms, in his Viceland series Flophouse. Specifically, he goes through these comedian ‘flophouses’ and then sees them all put on a live show on a rooftop, in a back yard, in a garage, etc.

Here’s a trailer for Flophouse in case you’re curious as to what this all looks like and haven’t gotten the luck to go to a house comedy show.

By the way, featured in the trailer are:
Kate Willett, Clare O’Kane, Solomon Georgio, Amy Miller, Brent Weinbach, Brandon Wardell, Eric Dadourian, Dave Stone, Maria Bamford, James Adomian, Sean Patton, James Austin Johnson, David Gborie, Steve Agee, and much more.

Look for Flophouse to come to Vice’s new Viceland on Feb. 29th.

Universal Follows Up Their Four Year Overall Deal with Tina Fey with a Two Year First Look Deal

Uncategorized

(via The Wrap)

Tina Fey is going from having license to develop TV at Universal Television to having license to develop movies at Universal Pictures.

Back in 2012, Tina Fey signed a four year overall deal with Universal to develop series for them. Given all of her success in that realm, and then the success of Sisters, Fey, along with her production company Little Stranger, has gotten a whole new first look deal for the next two years that allows her to develop feature film projects for the studio.

Already, she’s developing a comedy about three women who learn how to count cards based on a Good Housekeeping article “You Bet!” by Ruth Palmer.

Along this path, we wouldn’t be surprised if Tina Fey launched her own studio.

In an age of late night where stand-up spots where are much rarer than they used to be, a comedian multiple times is even rarer.

That makes Scottish comedian Daniel Sloss 5th appearance on Conan very impressive. Sloss is probably one of the comedians that has done stand-up the most on the show in the TBS era of Conan O’Brien’s tenure in late night.

Watch his set from last night right here.

New Showrunner Kristin Newman Calling Audible for Tonight’s Midseason Return of “The Muppets”

February 3, 2016
Uncategorized
abc, kristin newman, midseason, the muppets

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

Largely, it seems like they’re bringing the series back the original spirit of The Muppets.

In an attempt to make a Muppets TV show that would both please adult and younger audiences in 2016, ABC made a cross between The Muppets, Studio 60, and The Office that erred more on the adult side of things. That sounds like it should be a home run these days, but that has not been the case.

Low ratings brought the network to let go of the initial showrunner Bob Kushell in favor of new blood, Kristin Newman from Galavant. In this Hollywood Reporter interview, Newman has opted to have less in fighting between The Muppets, re-center Kermit and Miss Piggy’s relationship, and focus on joyful moments.

It sounds like a good move and we’ll all get to see how effective Newman’s new plan is tonight on ABC at 8:30PM.

John Krasinski’s The Hollars and Norman Lear Documentary Are Latest Sundance Buys

(via Variety/Deadline)

Looks like the biz still has faith in Sundance.

While there is plenty of evidence of studios buying up the distribution rights to host Sundance Film Festival titles only to have them underwhelm at the box office, the amount of money and movies being bought up seem to still going strong. Hopefully, their investments will go much better in 2016.

A Norman Lear documentary, Just Another Version of You, directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady sold to Music Box Films from PBS & American Masters Pictures. As you can imagine, that should be required viewing for any student of comedy, television, or entertainment.

John Krasinski’s latest film, The Hollars, in which he directs and stars, is classic indie dramedy fare that has a kind of prodigal son return home because of an ill parent only to face all the problems that he originally ran away from. The ensemble cast is impressive as well, featuring the likes of Margo Martindale, Charlie Day, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Randall Park, and Anna Kendrick. At Sundance, Sony Pictures Classics acquired distribution rights both stateside and in Asia.

We’ll be on the look out for release dates.

Watch Stephen Colbert Do His Own Collection of ‘Twilight Zone’ Twists

Stephen Colbert unveiled a new segment for The Late Show last night where they supposedly dig into the ‘CBS vault’ to revisit classic CBS programming over the decades.

While one may think this could be a little reminiscent of Late Night with Conan O’Brien’s Walker Texas Ranger Lever, note that Colbert only seems to get inspired by old CBS shows and then does his own uber-clever take on it.

For this first time around, Stephen does just the twists of The Twilight Zone and it’s pretty spot on. Watch it here.

Bassem Youssef Will Be “Learning” About American Democracy in New Fusion Series “Democracy Handbook”

February 2, 2016
Uncategorized
bassem youssef, democracy handbook, fusion, no you shut up, riot la

While Jon Stewart is just appearing on shows here and there for now, the “Jon Stewart of Egypt” is getting his own show.

Announced during the live edition of No, You Shut Up! with Paul F. Tompkins at Riot LA, Dr. Bassem Youssef who hosted Egypt’s satirical news show Al-Bernameg (often compared to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) is being brought over stateside for his very own show by Fusion.

The idea for Democracy Handbook is that the attempts for democracy in The Middle East have not really gone that well and Youssef is coming to America to learn how to do democracy “right” since our version of democracy is running “just fine” with “no hiccups whatsoever”.

So, we’re on board for this and are standing by for a premiere date.

Like they’ve been doing all along, Netflix is upping their comedy game by having an entire series of character based comedy and featuring some of the best in the game right now to boot.

Basically, Kate Berlant, Dr. Brown, Paul Downs, John Early, Lauren Lapkus, Tim Robinson, Natasha Rothwell, and Henry Zebrowski all get their own episode of The Characters, which is not unlike how Comedy Central does The Half Hour.

Watch the trailer for The Characters here, then look for all the episodes to start streaming on Netflix on Fri. Mar. 11th.

Morris From America, Swiss Army Man, and The Intervention Win at 2016 Sundance’s U.S. Dramatic Competition

Yes, what’s been described as the farting corpse movie won an award at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.

In fact, plenty of news outlets reported of numerous walk outs during the screening of Swiss Army Man starring Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano, which does indeed feature farting corpses. Those walk outs didn’t stop directors Daniel Scheinhart and Daniel Kwan from winning a directing award.

The cross country coming-of-age story Morris From America featuring Markees Christmas, who got his start at Channel 101, was honored with the Waldo Screenwriting Award (given to writer Chad Hartigan) and Special Jury Award for Individual Performance for Markees.

Dramedy, The Intervention, also got a Special Jury Award for Individual Performance that went to Melanie Lynskey.

Hopefully, all of these films will get a much wider distribution than the typical limited indie release and we’ll all have a chance to go see what was the talk of Park City.

Esquire UK Puts Derek Zoolander on Cover for March Issue

Back when Zoolander first came out back in 2001, social media hadn’t been created, much less caught on. Thus, creating the legend of Derek Zoolander was left to a montage in the beginning of the movie.

Now, 15 years later, Ben Stiller can actually go around in character as Derek and make it really seem like he’s the biggest male model that there ever was, is, and will be, especially since the fashion world seems game as well.

On top of this Esquire UK cover pictured above and an accompanying photo shoot video, Derek has done in-depth interviews with Vogue, walked the runway during a Valentino fashion show, and even had a whirlwind romance that lasted a few hours with other actual models like Cara Delevigne.

All in all, it’s a pretty great promotional campaign for Zoolander 2, which comes out next week.
