PBS SoCal’s ANGELENO Profiles Lisa Curry Putting in the Work to Make It in Comedy
ANGELENO has PBS SoCal find certain individuals throughout the dense sprawl of LA that highlight the intricate tapestry that makes up this city.
For comedy, they followed and interviewed Lisa Curry and showed the amount dedication, work, focus, and self-determination she has, on top of being funny, in order to make her own path in comedy here in Los Angeles.
You can watch it on PBS at Sun, Apr 23 at 6PM and Mon, Apr 24 at 7:30PM or stream it right now right here.
TV Land’s Teachers Is Getting a Full Order for Season 3
TV Land is really happy with their original comedy series Teachers.
They’re so happy that they’re giving that rarely-seen-these-days full season order of 20 episodes for season 3 of the show.
This means, we guess, that there is enough room for two single camera cable sitcoms about teachers who are more than a little rough around the edges on television. Remember that, earlier this year, TruTV renewed Those Who Can’t for season 3 too.
Michelle Wolf Will Tape Her First Hour Special for HBO with Neal Brennan Directing
Michelle Wolf, who you’ve probably seen rise from being a great stand-up to Late Night with Seth Meyers to The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, is now making her way to an hour long HBO stand-up special.
Between HBO, Netflix, Comedy Central, Showtime, and Seeso, you can now definitely see each network building up their reserves of comedy specials that they exclusively own and HBO made a pretty solid choice with Wolf.
It’ll tape this summer on Saturday, August 12th at NYC’s Skirball Center and the one and only Neal Brennan will be directing.
Here’s a recent set of Wolf performing in the UK at Live at the Apollo as a bit of a preview of what’s to come.
Desus and Mero Are Taping in LA for the Week
One of late night’s most exciting newcomers, Desus and Mero on Viceland, are spending the week here in LA to tape their show.
They even did a fun evening in front of a standing room only crowd with Deadline last night.
They don’t do live audiences for taping their episodes, but, maybe, just maybe, you’ll catching doing a remote segment like this one where Mero “puts on a three point clinic” at the Venice courts.
It was already enticing enough to hear what Comedy Central has lined-up with late night thus far between Moshe Kasher, The President Show with Atamanuik’s Trump, Jim Jefferies, and Jordan Klepper’s new show.
Now, they’ve got a whole new chunk of programming and pilots that give a lot to look forward to.
Taskmaster, from Alex Horne, has Reggie Watts hosting a competition as the “taskmaster” between comedians performing “stupefying tasks”. New Negroes will be the TV adaptation of the live showcase hosted by Baron Vaughn and Open Mike Eagle featuring new black talent.
Comedy Central has also upped their digital series Alternatino with Arturo Castro and Delco Proper from John McKeever and Tommy Pope to full fledged TV pilots.
The other pilots include projects such as Neal Brennan interviewing celebrity guests in their home town, former Nightly Show contributor Franchesca Ramsey perhaps repackaging The Nightly Show, and a stand-up show from Jak Knight.
Scripted half-hour pilots include a South Side Chicago based comedy from Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin, a Queens based comedy following rapper/actress/comedian Awkwafina, an Austin based sitcom from Noël Wells, and an existential sibling comedy from Chris Kelly & Sarah Schneider.
From this, we can only hope that Comedy Central reaffirms its place in comedy going forward as Netflix, HBO, and FX are currently riding the high tides of critical praise and awards.
Maybe it’s because it’s just a fictional reality versus our actual reality, but Jonah’s latest foibles with his public image via his own website, Selina’s desperate attempt to seem caring and likable, and Richard Splett’s “engrossing” blog make for a world that seems a little better than our own.
So, do enjoy the rabbit hole of bonus interactive content that Veep has gifted us all for season six, which includes a Selina Meyer “on-line literacy test”.

Colbert’s Late Show Midnight Confessions to Be Made Into a Book
In addition to Colbert’s rise to the top of late night in these tense times, Colbert and company have found a reliable go-to recurring segment with “Midnight Confessions”.
The bit that has Stephen Colbert in an confessional admitting to the audience and viewers what he doesn’t have time to do at an actual church is one of the longest enduring segments on the show.
Now, it’ll be a book coming out later this year on September 5th from Simon & Schuster. As the book probably won’t be just one-liners the whole way through, you’ve got to wonder what other sort of “confessions”, stories, etc. that Colbert will have in there.
The audiobook version that will accompany this release ought to be a really fun bonus as well.
John Cleese to Co-Star in BBC Sitcom “Edith” from Charles McKeown, The Writer of “Brazil”
In this new Golden Age of television, John Cleese is indeed returning to the realm of sitcom with a new show from the writer of Brazil, Charles McKeown.
The premise, the engagement of an elderly couple is interrupted by an old son moving in with them, seems kind of straightforward and a bit classical in a sort of Odd Couple, Three’s Company sense.
That being said, with Monty Python alums Cleese and McKeown on board, we wouldn’t be surprised if there’s something special that they’ve got hidden up their sleeve for this series in tone, writing, etc.
Boomerang Will Be Getting Its Own Subscription Based Streaming Service
For $4.99 a month, you’ll be able to stream more than 1000 episodes of cartoons old and new including Looney Tunes, and Tom & Jerry, The Jetsons, Yogi Bear, and much more. Some of these will even be airing on the Boomerang cable channel.
You can essentially have Saturday morning cartoons whenever you want.
We love that Hasan Minhaj will be the host for this year’s White House Correspondents Dinner. Not only is he a great Daily Show correspondent, but he hosted last year’s RTCA Dinner and took no prisoners with both his jokes and his message.
Even though Trump isn’t attending, Hasan will very likely make the most of the evening and, perhaps, a very historic roast of what might be one of the most despised Presidents in U.S. History.
The 2017 White House Correspondents Dinner is set for April 29th.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Gets First Multi-Season Series Pick-Up at Amazon
Right from the get go, Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator of Gilmore Girls, is getting two seasons at Amazon for her new show, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
It’s a period piece starting off in 1958 and following a family woman’s journey into becoming a successful stand-up comedian working her way through Greenwich Village in NYC to being on TV.
With two whole seasons to play with, we’ll be curious to see the series arc that Palladino makes for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Watch Trailer Don Rickles Series “Dinner With Don” Which Wrapped Before He Passed Away
One of the more exciting things that were in the works was AARP’s series Dinner with Don that essentially would be Don Rickles’ version of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.
Guests Amy Poehler, Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, Zach Galifianakis, and Paul Rudd had dinner with Don and enjoyed going back-and-forth with Mr. Warmth.
Fortunately, before Rickles passing this week, 10 episodes of the show had already been shot. There is no word on when and where it will make its debut, but we hope that its soon.
‘Will & Grace’ Revival Extended to 12 Episodes
Orginally, 10 episodes of the revived Will & Grace, complete with the original cast and creators returning, had been ordered.
Now, NBC has ordered two extra episodes ever getting closer to a full season order. Honestly, if the cast’s schedule permits, don’t be surprised if there are episodes ordered on the back end.
Season 8 of Archer/Archer Dreamland Premieres Tonight
Tonight, the 8th season of Archer will transport you to LA in 1947 with Archer looking for the killer of his partner.
So, if you’ve wondered what LA Confidential would have been like with H. Jon Benjamin as the lead detective, you can wonder no more.
Catch the premiere of Archer Dreamland at 10PM on FXx.
FXx to Cancel “Man Seeking Woman” After Season 3
One of the most imaginative shows on television unfortunately will come to a close after the conclusion of its current season.
If you haven’t gotten into Simon Rich’s Man Seeking Woman, you can stream it on Hulu. We highly recommend to do so.
Jude Tedmori Is Launching His Own Weekly “Jude News” on Facebook Live Starting Right Now
One of our favorite sketch writer/performesr in town Jude Tedmori (It’s the Jude from the amazing sketch duo Alex & Jude) is coming up with his own “No Spin Zone” (that’s also doubles as a “No Sexual Harassment Zone”) with a weekly news show streamed on Facebook Live.
As you can see on the sign, it’s going to start at 1:45PM today (i.e. right now).
Iliza Shlesinger to Get Her Own Weekly Late Night Show on Freeform
Well, late night is really getting shaken up this week.
Comedy Central announced the addition of two late night series, The President Show with Donald Trump as played by Anthony Atamanuik and a Daily Show companion series hosted by Daily Show correspondent Jordan Klepper.
Also, Fox News just cancelled its own late night comedy series Red Eye.
On top of all of that, Iliza Shlesinger is getting her own weekly late night show on cable network Freeform called Truth & Iliza. She’ll be focused on a specific theme with each episode, then have segments, field pieces, etc. go from there.
Truth & Iliza is set to premiere on Tuesday, May 2nd at 10PM.
If you take a look at the late night landscape, it’s getting bigger than ever since more of cable has joined the fray with options diverting far from the traditional late night talk show format.
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Desus & Mero, Throwing Shade, and more offer a stark contrast to Fallon, Colbert, Kimmel, Corden, and Meyers on broadcast networks.
The three newly announced late night shows with Iliza, Klepper, and Atamanuik are sure to add to that growth.
This Fall, Jordan Klepper Will Be Getting the 11:30 Companion Slot to The Daily Show
Always trying to keep it in the family when they can, Comedy Central is upping Jordan Klepper from Daily Show correspondent to having his own show right after The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Monday-Thursdays.
Details are sparse at this point, but we hope that Comedy Central leans into Klepper’s exemplary work with his field pieces.
As it stands now, that does mean The President Show with Donald Trump (Anthony Atamanuik), which premieres later this month, will have to either close out its first season/cycle this fall or move to Fridays. We’ll just have to find out in a few months.
Netflix Signs Brian Regan for Two Comedy Specials
One by one, Netflix is closer and closer to having original hour long, stand-up specials from all of the biggest comedians working today.
Their latest acquisition will be two comedy special from the legendary Brian Regan, one of which will be taped this summer while Regan is on tour.
The taping will take place at Denver’s Paramount Theatre on June 23rd and 24th and tickets are on sale now.
You can get the rest of Regan’s tour dates here.
Also, note that Netflix has a good number of comedy specials from non-English speaking comedians as well. Their world domination of stand-up specials almost seems nigh.
