For years, the LA Indie Improv Festival has highlighted the diamonds in the rough that comprise indie improv within LA’s massive comedy scene.

This upcoming weekend (Saturday, Aug. 18th & Sunday Aug. 19th), the 7th (and final) LA Indie Improv Festival will commence at The Clubhouse in Los Feliz and Lyr featuring the likes of such improv luminaries as Heather Anne Campbell, Monika Smith, Rococo, Sassy Bluff, Drew DiFonzo Marks, Private Street, South Asian AF Superteam, and oh so much more.

Oh yeah, they’ll even have improv on a party bus going between venues.

One last thing: admission to all of those is FREE, by the way.

For years now, we’ve marveled at the many stunning facets of Kristen Studard’s comedy that includes characters, improv, short film, and stand-up. There is always something wonderfully off-beat about everything she does, which is why we’re excited for her upcoming solo show Prolonged Eye Contact (apparently, there will be actual, intentional prolonged eye contact during the show too) at the Lyric Hyperion.

The show’s description, which we enjoyed, reads:

Prolonged Eye Contact is a an interactive solo show by comedian Kristen Studard about the search for love, connection, and approval by one performer with one audience. Kristen would like to be loved by you, monogamously. (She’s a one-audience type of gal.) What happens when someone won’t break eye contact? Uh oh, shit just got real. Through a series of characters, a game show, and an erotic encounter with a bee, Kristen woos you by opening her heart and her eyes and looking right into your soul. Are you ready to be seen?

She has three performances that you can catch from Thurs. Aug. 23rd-Sat. Aug. 25th at 10PM. Tickets are $10 and you can (and really, really should) get them here.

audible, august, bad reception, comedy show, long form improv, los angeles, release party, ucb sunset

Of the many things that you should keep your ears perked up for on premium audio streaming platform, Audible, the upcoming series Bad Reception from Justin Michael and Eric Martin should be at the top of the list.

Bad Reception gathers some of the best improvisers around including Drew Tarver, Betsy Sodaro, Paul F. Tompkins, D’Arcy Carden, Dan Lippert, Carl Tart, Mary Sasson, and more to weave the tall tale of the “incident” that befell South Grampers in Northern California. The story of the “movie butter capital of the world” is completely improvised in 13 acts and constructed completely through various phone (and phone related) conversations.

Having gotten a sneak listen to it, we really enjoyed the tinge of the fantastical given by a Choose Your Own Adventure book, except improvisors are making all the choices and are definitely making up their own satisfyingly absurd choices.

So, there will be a release party for Bad Reception later this month, Saturday, August 18th, at UCB Sunset at 9PM. The creators and much of the cast will be there. Tickets are $12 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Oh, you can pre-order Bad Reception (avail. Aug. 21st) on Audible here.

Rather than wait for comedy folks to make fun of a bad movie that finds its way to your local multiplex, come watch them dream up something that’s so bad that it’s funny (and, of course, subsequently reveling in how bad/stereotypical/derivative/hack it is) at the new live comedy show Setflix.

Looking at this line-up, which includes a longtime member of Screen Junkies and a co-host of The Bechdel Cast along with a co-host of The Simpsons podcast Everything’s Coming Up Podcast, we’re pretty sure you going to hear some “best/worst” movie pitches.
