TCB Debriefing 5/4-5/9/24: The Office, Jon Stewart, Dropout Presents, David Cross, Sam Morrison, Cole Escola, Isabella Rossellini, Cate Blanchett, Alec Berg, SXSW, SNL

May 10, 2024
News
alec berg, cate blanchett, cole escola, daily show, david cross, dropout, greg daniels, isabella rossellini, jon stewart, sam morrison, sxsw, the office

1. As the annals of television and entertainment history will remember The Office as a cultural institution that spanned several generations of fans where many a sitcom has not, it shouldn’t come as an entire surprise that The Office, the U.S. version, is going to be revisited with a new paper based business and different cast (not to dissimilar to the dynamic that What We Do in the Shadows the series has to the original movie of the same name) (Variety). Greg Daniels will be back at the helm, but Domnhall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore are the only two cast members announced thus far. We’re going to take a wild guess and say they won’t be the Jim and Pam of this spinoff of the show.

2. If you’re a little distraught by Jon Stewart only hosting Mondays on The Daily Show, fret not. He’s going to also do a podcast called The Weekly Show (AP)

3. Dropout has been busy working in semi-secret with recording not one, not two, but several specials between Brennan & Izzy, Courtney Pauroso, The Big Team, Hank Green, and more. Take a gander at Dropout’s foray into the comedy specials game (following their massive success with absurdist improv game shows) here.

4. The one and only David Cross is starting his 40 plus city stand-up tour later this year, called The End of the Beginning of The End,  on 9/11, which, arguably, is kind of too perfect. Best go get tickets here while you still can.

5. Sam Morrison is upping the ante with his solo show that’s currently destined for Broadway by essentially by Beverly Hills’ exclusive playhouse, the Wallis Annenberg Center from 9/20-10/13 (Deadline). Sam is so damn funny that it’s worth putting up with going to Beverly Hills.

6. History will likely remember Cole Escola‘s version of Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary!, despite them not “doing” any “research”. Please enjoy Cole admitting that fact and more on Seth Meyers this week here.

7. It’s somewhat cryptic and yet, very much straightforward as to what cinema legend Isabella Rossellini has gotten herself into this time with Green Porno and Other Shorts. In any case, the contrast of her ever-calming voice and animals copulating is pretty damn funny. Take a gander at the trailer  for her Green Porno and Others Shorts here, then go watch it now on Mubi.

8. Is Cate Blanchett in a comedy/sci-fi era? She has Borderlands coming up after portraying the Nordic mythological figure Hela in the MCU and now, a sci-fi comedy Alpha Gang where she plays an alien invader from the folks that brought one of the strangest releases in awhile (well, since Everything Everywhere All At Once), Sasquatch Sunset (THR). If this is the case, we are more than ready for Blanchett to do more rounds of Hot Ones to promote it.

9. Lovers of Barry and Silicon Valley, rejoice in the coming of another Alec Berg co-created series (this one will be with Adam Countee). Coming to Hulu, will be Berg and Countee’s take on the world of Formula 1 racing, which ought to be refreshing, unflinchingly satirical take that seems to have a bit of a Succession streak to it (it follows a racing family dynasty). (Deadline).

10. SXSW is branching out to London next year (The Guardian) (i.e. they’re have a non BBQ edition of SXSW).

11. SNL is on the verge of its 50th anniversary, which will lead to a gigantic retrospective of the comedy monolith (and maybe a possibility of Lorne finally handing to the keys to, ummm, a Tim Robinson type)

12. We’ll leave you with this: Free Ben Schwartz tix on 10/5 anyone? E-mail us at thecomedybureau@gmail.com and we’ll see if we know some guys (it’s just one guy).

TCB Debriefing 4/14-4/19/24: The Office, Nikki Glaser, WGA Awards, Hacks, Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, The Chair Company, David Jonsson

News
chair company, david jonsson, hacks, netflix, nikki glaser, queer comedy, the office, wga awards

1. So, one, the possibility of a new version of The Office from Greg Daniels and Michael Koman is coming closer and closer to fruition and two, this possibly new Office, will star Domnhall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore (Deadline). The enduring popularity of the U.S. iteration of The Office across generations almost definitively makes it more popular than previous sitcom monoliths like Seinfeld and Friends, but one has to wonder if a new Office is going to be like What We Do in the Shadows brilliantly spinning off the movie or more like Joey. The casting of Gleeson and Impacciatore is curious as it feels as though Scranton, PA will not be where this new Office will be set. Are they going back to the UK? Will it be in the EU? Maybe it’ll be in somewhere even more removed (Topeka, KS?). We probably won’t have to wait too long as we’re guessing this will be fast tracked through development.

2. Thank goodness we’re getting a new hour special from Nikki Glaser, who, for our money, has one of the best joke deliveries in comedy today. Coming soon to HBO will be her lovingly titled new hour, Someday You’ll Die, and you can see what we’re saying just in this trailer here. Look for the hour to premiere on HBO on May 11th (and presumably be on Max at the same date).

3. Comedy dominated the WGA Awards (i.e. won outside of the comedy specific categories) this year. The comedy winners are as follows:

Comedy Series–The Bear

Original Screenplay-The Holdovers

Adapted Screenplay-American Fiction

Episodic Comedy–Poker Face

Comedy Variety/Talk Series–Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Comedy Variety/Sketch Series–I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson

Comedy/Variety Special–Sarah Silverman: Someone You Love

Animation-The Simpsons

TV & New Media Motion Pictures-Quiz Lady

Thank goodness I Think You Should Leave is finally getting its due. See the full list of winners here.

4. One of the best comedies about stand-up comedy in quite some time, Hacks, with award worthy turns from Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder is finally returning for its third season. Behold its first trailer here, then look for .

5. Netflix is starting the corporate push for Pride Month early with the trailer for their doc about queer comedy pioneers, Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, due out Jun. 18th. Take a gander at what will be important stories/history lessons from Todd Glass, Margaret Cho, Guy Branum, Bob the Drag Queen, and so many more here.

6. We were already sold on Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin’s HBO project, The Chair Company, by virtue of the fact that Robinson and Kanin, but this pilot has gotten even more intriguing with the addition of frequent John Early/Kate Berlant collaborator Andrew DeYoung coming on to direct and EP (Deadline).

7. From the ultra charming Rye Lane to making his very own show, things are coming up David Jonsson (Deadline).

8. We’ll leave you with this: Maybe Rob Schneider isn’t for anyone?

TCB Debriefing 8/3/23: Dicks: The Musical, Rap Sh!t S2, Carmen Christopher, Leslie David Baker Office Spin-Off, Conan Remembers Paul Reubens

1. In what will be one of A24’s boldest releases yet (except for Everything Everywhere All At Once), and that’s still a high bar to clear, they are doing their first musical and they’re making damn sure it’s rated R. Thanks to the wickedly sharp humor of Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp and the directing talents of Borat’s very own Larry Charles (and managing to have Megan Thee Stallion and Nathan Lee in the same movie), 2023 might be the year with Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Dicks: The Musical. Get your first taste here, then look for its release on Sept. 29th.

2. Due to the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike still not being over, Issa Rae’s latest dramedy, Rap Sh!t, will now be premiering Nov. 9th instead of next week (Deadline). In its place, get ready for way more reality TV on HBO Max that you didn’t ask for.

3. Carmen Christopher who brilliantly blends being dry, absurd, and hysterically aggressive is setting to go on big ol’ North American tour from the end of this month all the way to the end of the year. Do not miss out on his Waverunner tour whether or not it’s close to where you live or not (go get tickets for a city near you here).

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Carmen Christopher (@carmenyescarmen)

4. At one point in time, Leslie David Baker, often known and celebrated as Stanley Hudson from the American version of The Office attempted to crowdfund a spin-off that would center around Stanley. After years of delays (and the double strike), Baker has opted to refund all his backers on Kickstarter (Deadline). When Tinseltown is all back up and running, we wouldn’t be surprised to see this project get revived again, perhaps even without needing to be crowdfunded.

5. Conan O’Brien remembers and pays tribute to Paul Reubens on the latest episode of Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. He also reminds us all that Reubens was amazing even he was not being Pee Wee Herman.

6. One day, a Trump joke will feel as dated as Nixon joke. We only hope that, somehow, America/the world got better enough where either won’t be relevant anymore.

Even after years of being off the air, the American version of The Office still endures as millions of people’s favorite comedy that they will rewatch again and again.

So, the idea that The Office stars Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fischer would want to recap the series and share insider details seems like a home run. Indeed, Office Ladies, their recently launched podcast on Earwolf, does just that. They’ve just dropped their first episode recapping the pilot and, from listening to it, it’s clear that if you love The Office at all, you’ll very easily want to subscribe and so many already have. The love that Kinsey and Fischer have for the show (and for each other) makes for a sort of warm, nostalgic, quilted blanket that features so many details that you might have not noticed until they told you about it.

So, get into Office Ladies here or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts.

Beginning on Oct. 16th, Fischer and Kinsey will co-host a podcast that will revisit The Office, the very sitcom that brought them into the hearts and minds of the world.

Available via Earwolf, Office Ladies will have Jenna and Angela go episode by episode, an already proven podcast format, giving insight to their experiences on one of the most beloved sitcoms this side of the millennium.

Essentially, it’ll be a premium version of DVD commentary of The Office.

Chili’s Lifts Permanent Ban on The Office’s Pam Beesly Halpert

Season 2 of the U.S. version of The Office saw Pam Beesly get 86′d from all Chili’s worldwide for drinking other people’s cocktails after she had been cut off during “The Dundies” that Michael Scott was holding for his Dunder Mifflin Scranton employees.

All these years later, well after the series finale, Jenna Fischer posted a pic outside of a Chili’s pondering whether should she go in. In the zeitgeist of opposing bans, Chili’s responded and issued a real press release that nixes the ban on Pam Beesly Halpert from any Chili’s establishments.

It may only be a ban on a fictional character from a series that ended awhile ago that has been lifted, but we’ll take any good news that we can get right now.

Finland to Get Local Version of ‘The Office’

If you’re keeping score, this will be the 9th version of The Office joining the original from the UK, the U.S. version, and versions from France, Quebec, Chile, Israel, Germany, and Sweden.

As far as British comedy being translated to territories around the globe that’s a pretty singular feat. Eddie Izzard has not even learned to do stand-up in that many languages yet.

America! You can watch #LifeOnTheRoad exclusively on @Netflix next year. Or you can fly to The UK to watch in movie theatres this August 🙂

–@rickygervais

The movie spin-off of the British version of The Office that follows David Brent’s forced music career will come across the pond via Netflix exclusively. In the ongoing and growing streaming service rivalries, this is a pretty big get for Netflix

There isn’t a set release date yet, but Netflix will have plenty of stuff between now and then to binge watch.

The rock mockumentary following David Brent’s leap into music (that has been in the works over the last couple of years) not only has a release date of Aug. 19th, but there will be an album and live tour as well for Life on the Road.

NBC is really going out there in trying an exclusively comedy subscription service in Seeso. Fortunately, they’re letting us all have a trial run come Dec. 3rd where we can stream Seeso for free for the rest of December.

What does that mean exactly? You’ll be able to stream their new shows including Harmonquest, Hidden America with Jonah Ray, live stand-up, and The UCB Show as well as archives of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, The Office (including the British version), 30 Rock SNL, and so much more.

Don’t take our word for it. Let Seeso show you itself.

For $3.99 a month, it looks like you’ll be getting quite a lot.

Starting in January, NBC will be officially launching Seeso, which will not only offer ad free access to all seasons of The Office, Parks and Recreation, Kids in the Hall, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, The Mighty Boosh, SNL, and more, but also feature boat loads of new content and shows exclusive to Seeso.

Starting off with 20 new series from the likes of Dan Harmon, Amy Poelher/Ian Roberts/Matt Walsh/Matt Besser, Scott Aukerman, Cameron Esposito/Rhea Butcher, Wyatt Cenac, Tom Lennon, Ben Garant, Kulap Vilaysack, Jonah Ray, they’ll feature anything from scripted sitcoms, live stand-up, travel shows with a comedian, reality show parodies, and more.

It would almost seem that the whole of all of this represents the comedy that has been missing from NBC’s line-up for awhile.

They’ll also be bringing a curated collection of movies and series into the Seeso fold as well.

Sound good? Good. Well, make sure you start saving $3.99 a month after Christmas then.

NBC isn’t kidding around with comedy this pilot season.

Powerless is the latest comedy pilot ordered by NBC from Ben Queen that will follow the lives of the insurance company employees set in the DC Comics universe. Undoubtedly, an insurance company would fittingly have an ungodly workload in a world full of superheroes and supervillains.

Being referenced as The Office with a DC Comics backdrop, would their be an actually sinister Dwight?

Jim and Pam in space?

Greg Daniels, the man behind the U.S. version of The Office, is on to his latest project which seems like it will center on the same sort of day-to-day and romantic tensions that Daniels has beautifully orchestrated in the past, but will now be set up in the sci-fi genre over at HBO.

There is no word on talent being attached or more details on the premise, but perhaps, if this gets picked up we’ll all have something to follow up Other Space with.

NBC Planning Subscription Based Online Streaming Service For Comedy

(via Wall Street Journal)

NBC must be taking cues from how well comedy does online with the dedicated fan bases of The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Community as they’re now developing a subscription online service targeted for comedy. It’s not clear how this service will work specifically, but if it’s more like HBO GO, then that’s probably a step in the right direction.

NBC is saying episodes of The Tonight Show and Saturday Night Live will be available, we’re more curious about the fates of the aforementioned Office, Parks and Rec, etc. and whether they will be taken off of Hulu and Netflix to live exclusively at this NBC streaming service.

Also, more content will be developed for this service, which, we hope means that they will be putting more backing behind certain pilots like Adam Scott and Joe Mande’s dispensary comedy.

Looks like David Brent is headed the way of Alan Partridge. He’s not going to be held up in a radio station as a hostage like Steve Coogan’s Partridge, but Ricky Gervais’ Brent from the original The Office is officially getting a full length feature movie.

Following his escapades into making a go at his dream of being a rock star, Life On The Road will follow Brent on a self-financed tour. Production starts in 2015 and we can only now ponder if Gervais playing music as the character of David Brent is going better when Gervais made a legitimate attempt at being a pop star.
