Fox Cancels Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Last Man on Earth, The Mick

Well, it looks like Fox is pretty much done with high concept single camera sitcoms for awhile (except for Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville).  Brooklyn Nine-Nine made it to five seasons, Last Man on Earth did four, and The Mick only lasted two.

It should be noted that while Last Man on Earth is on its way out, Fox is still looking towards reviving Tim Allen vehicle Last Man Standing. The addition of another multicam sitcom that takes place in a retirement home, The Cool Kids, even further suggests Fox is going all in on older audiences.

Last Man on Earth returns for its second season this Sunday at 9:30PM on Fox.

That’s when you can enjoy more of Phil and Carol striking out on their own and getting really niche with their dialogue while mid-coitus like so.

On Sept. 27th, we get to follow Phil and Carol as a few of the last people on earth as Last Man on Earth returns for its second season.

In fact, you can see what the two are up to, specifically what Phil will be running into in this first promo.

As you’re probably checking your Instagram right now, know that you can indulge in new sort of photo of yourself, i.e. a selfie, thanks to the folks at Last Man on Earth.

They have made cutouts of the face of both Phil Miller and Carol Pilbasian so that you can go around with your significant other as what’s probably a less dysfunctional version of Phil and Carol. Even outside of the show, it’s probably the wishes of plenty of people to just have a mask of Will Forte and Kristen Schaal lying around.

Coupled with Empire, Fox is doing quite well for themselves right now.

The announcement just came through that Last Man on Earth is now getting a second season at Fox, which we’re not only excited for, but are now curious what that means for this first season and how they’ll be able to play with setting up the next season arc.

Maybe, Will Forte will answer that promotional phone again?

Oh, the things that are happening on set of Last Man on Earth.

During her interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Kristen Schaal described how challenging and remarkable of a love scene she had to film with Will Forte on Last Man on Earth.

There weren’t any acrobatics, but there something happened that neither Schaal or Forte will forget. Hear it in full detail here.

Last Man on Earth premiered last night on Fox, thankfully to solid ratings. So, please watch (or rewatch) and enjoy the premiere of Last Man on Earth now available on Hulu.

We’re Saying It One More Time: “Last Man on Earth” Premieres Tonight

The series that has brought together Phil Lord, Chris Miller, a seemingly deserted planet Earth, and Will Forte as the Last Man on Earth “Phil Miller” (see what they did there?) is finally premiering tonight.

Make sure to see what Forte (and probably most of us if we were being completely honest) would do if we had the whole world all to ourselves (i.e. Tequila filled kid pools) by tuning at 9PM tonight for the hour premiere on Fox.

Will Forte Really Takes Advantage of Being “Last Man on Earth” in New Unofficial Promo

February 15, 2015
Uncategorized

Earlier this week, Will Forte tweeted out a new promo for his upcoming show of Fox, Last Man on Earth. Titled “POOL 20 TC” along with having a timecode on the top left corner, it’s safe to say that this version is probably not going to air like this.

Still, it’s pretty fun and probably the fantasy of a good many people if they found out that they were the last person on this planet.

For the rest of Forte’s post-apocalyptic shenanigans, we’ll have to wait for the premiere on Sun. Mar. 1st at 9PM on Fox.

Leading up to the Mar. 1st premiere of Last Man on Earth, there is a promotional campaign that has led to giving a cell phone to star Will Forte and then giving the real phone number to that phone to the rest of us via flyers in major cities.

520-428-1174 will probably get you to voicemail, but there’s a chance you could get in touch with Forte, though we’re not sure whether he’ll answer as Will or his character Phil Miller or even someone else like Jenjamin Franklin.

When you’re the last man on earth, you’re also, by default, the best at pretty much everything.

Will Forte takes advantage of that as Phil Miller (any resemblance to show creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller?) in this latest promo for Last Man on Earth

Catch the series premiere Sun. Mar. 1st 9:30PM on Fox.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Last Man on Earth starring Will Forte already has people highly anticipated for its series premiere on Mar. 1st.

Now, the anticipation will possibly be higher as the wonderful Kristen Schaal has joined the cast though it’s not clear how she’ll figure into a series entitled Last Man on Earth.

So, Mar. 1st 9PM on Fox should be in your calendars by now and, if not, then do so ASAP.

What Has Happened to Comedy on Broadcast Networks? (Hint: Lots of Canceling)

November 25, 2014
Uncategorized

It would be a little premature to say that there’s writing on the wall, but comedy definitely seems like it is playing second fiddle (or almost no fiddle at all) to hour long dramas at NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox. Comedy is currently flourishing on cable and online and, perhaps, that is where episodic comedy, wholly, is headed.

This TV season alone, freshman comedies Selfie, A to Z, Manhattan Love Story, and Bad Judge have been canceled along with relative new comers The Millers.

Community, Arrested Development, and now The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which had a series order from NBC but didn’t even make it to air, have moved from TV networks to online streaming services.

Just yesterday, it was announced ABC also scrapped a sitcom they had already ordered to series, Members Only starring John Stamos.

Bloggers and John Mulaney alike keep talking about whether Mulaney will last on Fox. On top of all of that, there are rumors that NBC has halted production on Last Comic Standing after it already had brought it back from the dead.

We’re not saying broadcast networks have drawn a hard line on in the sand (yet) prohibiting comedy from their airwaves. Cristela, black-ish, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine have found success just starting out and the networks have a few comedy mainstays like Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, and Two and Half Men. New Girl and The Mindy Project have also seemed to fared well in their tenure at Fox. Also, cable networks TBS and TNT have recently canceled Sullivan & Son and Franklin & Bash, respectively.

Still, this last couple of years have seen an unprecedented shift of the comedy genre as an aggregate on TV from going live on air to every household with a TV on a weeknight to niche cable networks and various online entities ranging anywhere from Netflix to YouTube to Amazon. Key & Peele, Louie, Portlandia, Veep, Transparent, and Children’s Hospital are all just a few perfect examples of this new paradigm.

The future for comedy on TV and the behemoths of television does have yet to be decided. The highly anticipated Last Man on Earth from Chris Miller and Phil Lord starring Will Forte is premiering next year. Networks, like CBS, are starting to get on board with their own streaming service.

What is clear in the current TV landscape, above all, is that the Internet isn’t going away and, because of that, viewers can watch whatever they want whenever they want to watch it. Thus, people will watch their favorite Key & Peele sketch as many as times as they can stand, binge watch The Simpsons via The Simpsons World app/site, consume as much media that exists online of their favorite comedians (i.e. web series, podcasts, stand-up clips, etc.), and do so at any time of any day in any place versus Thursdays at 8 at home,

In such an environment, it’s much harder than it used to be to launch a broad franchise sitcom that lasts 10 seasons and lives on in syndication, which has been the network TV model for comedy for decades. So, for now, as NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt poignantly remarked during Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s move to Netflix, “…we have a very drama-heavy midseason schedule.”

The thankfully high concept single camera sitcom Last Man on Earth has finally gotten a premiere date. This series from Hollywood’s current comedy golden boys, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, starring Will Forte has had us excited ever since we saw a trailer earlier this year.

Sun. Mar. 1st will be the day when we get to see Forte walk the earth solo and, with that, it should be a pretty good day.

Will Forte is, apparently, The Last Man on Earth, which is made even better by the fact that it’s a series coming up on Fox from The Lego Movie’s Chris Miller and Phil Lord. Imagine the movie I Am Legend with no monsters and doing as he pleases and you’ll get some idea of how great this could be.

Watch this trailer directed by Key & Peele’s Peter Atencio.
