Pick of the Day: 50 Worst Jokes (in LA) 12/28

December 13, 2023
News
50 worst jokes, babs gray, best of 2023, brodie reed, los angeles comedy, silverlake, stand up comedy, worst of 2023

As the days fade away towards the end of 2023, year-end/best of lists are coming out aplenty. There is plenty to be celebrated with the very best in comedy of this year (Barbie might be the purest comedy to win a Best Picture Oscar in decades?). With that said, what about the worst?

Well, more accurately here, what are the worst jokes of some of the funniest folks in the LA comedy scene (the worst jokes of the year live in the comments of any social media platform)? That’s right, Babs Gray (Lady to Lady) is returning, along with co-host Brodie Reed, to have an absurdly fun, ridiculous evening of certified funny people doing what has proven to be their worst joke of the year (and you best bet that any attempt at an actual good joke will be met with boos). We’d argue that it’s almost more wild and unforgettable than the diametrically opposed 50 First Jokes that happens all over the country.

50 Worst Jokes will go down on Thurs. Dec. 28th at 7;30PM at Lyric Hyperion, complete with dance party afterwards. You can get all this show (and a chance to boogie at LH’s gorgeous theatre) for just $10 right here.

Pick of the Day: Holy Shit Improv 2 Year Anniversary All Day Improv Festival (in LA) 7/15

Though UCB has reopened months ago, when and how the next Del Close Marathon, the legendary multi-day, non-stop improv festival, has yet to be revealed. Pick of the Day: Jerrod Carmichael-Work in Progress (in LA) 8/11

August 10, 2022
News
jerrod carmichael, los angeles comedy, silverlake, stand up comedy

It is pretty much without question or any debate that Jerrod Carmichael’s Rothaniel is not only one of the best stand-up specials of 2022, but one of the best ones in recent memory (and very likely of this decade). The gravity of that special and playing with such a wide open blank canvas and open floor of conversation is revelatory.

With that in mind, you’re probably not going to want to miss Jerrod doing a work-in-progress show here in LA. Lucky for you, there’s one happening this Thurs. night Aug. 11th at 9:30PM PT @ Lyric Hyperion in Silverlake. Tickets are $18 (w/a $16 item min.) and space is definitely limited. You’re going to want to snag tickets quick before they inevitably sell out.

Pick of the Day: In Unit Laundry with Simon Gibson and M.K. Paulsen (in LA) Tuesdays Starting 7/19

July 7, 2022
News

Leading into 2020, it was a time where not only was there so much live comedy to go see, but one could treat themselves to seeing the very funny likes of Simon Gibson and M.K. Paulsen all the time. Having been roommates, doing a podcast together, being on a reality show about JFL, and more, Simon and M.K. are perhaps, LA comedy’s favorite odd couple.

Smack dab in the middle of 2022, we’re getting back to the volume of comedy that we had almost three years ago and part of that return is M.K. and Simon having a weekly stand-up showcase at the newly refurbished Lyric Hyperion. Called In-Unit Laundry, Simon and M.K. will gather their favorite comedy folks from the scene (and whatever good folks are in town) Tuesdays at 8PM PT at 2106 Hyperion Ave.

They’re kicking off this weekly run on Jul. 19th and tickets are only $10 if you buy them in advance here.

With an inaugural line-up of Joel Kim Booster, James Adomian, Kylie Brakeman, Solomon Georgio, Erik Rivera, and Steph Tolev, it’s a show that damn well better not miss.

Pick of the Day: Fake Birthday with Caitlin Cook and A.J. Holmes (in LA) 11/14

One of NYC’s most fun variety shows is the comedy and music mash-up at Fake Birthday with Caitlin Cook and A.J. Holmes. Holmes is a Broadway dynamo and Cook has toured the globe with her über clever musical comedy (she did a whole solo musical comedy show based on bathroom graffiti). Together, they have been the duo at the core of Fake Birthday and with their musical comedy powers combined (and a stellar line-up of guests), they’ve made quite the spot for themselves in the thriving NYC comedy scene.

So, Cook and Holmes are stopping into LA for an exclusive show at Silverlake Lounge, which, if you’re in and around LA, you absolutely make your Silverlake to catch. They’ve gathered an exemplary LA line-up with Atsuko Okatsuka, Naomi Ekperigin, Zach Zucker, Langston Kerman, Liza Treyger, and Ethan Kuperberg all joining with their own grand comedy stylings in between original songs from Cook and Holmes.

This LA edition of Fake Birthday is set for Sun. Nov. 14th at Silverlake Lounge at 8PM PT. Tickets are $16.95 and you ought to go snag them right now (especially since it’ll be AJ Holmes’ actual birthday for this Fake Birthday).

Pick of the Day: Sauce Comedy (in LA) 9/28

Slowly, but surely (as much as the pandemic will allow), some of our favorite shows from the before times are coming back in LA.

Many Friday nights, you could have found us at the back of a private room at Desano Pizza in East Hollywood for the fantastic weekly comedy show known as Sauce. It was nice, neatly packed show that had some of the best stand-ups in LA and some out-of-left-field bits that were the perfect cherry on top for that slice of the evening.

Thankfully, it’s back with most of its original crew, Babs Gray, Erin Lampart, and Brodie Reed and they’ve relocated to both Silverlake Lounge and a Tuesday night. Their first show back since lockdown is set for Tues. Sept. 28th at 9PM PT and admission is free (proof of vaccination required). Per usual, they have a killer line-up  for this edition of Sauce with Katrina Davis, James Fritz, Kyle Mizono & Anna Seregina, and Steve Hernandez.

If you’re in or around Silverlake in LA (or even if you’re not), make this your Tuesday night for this coming week.

It has been a minute (several minutes actually) since Kyle Ayers’ fantastic show/podcast Never Seen It where comedians reimagine celebrated, beloved movies that they have never seen and then do a table read of their version.

We still can’t forget how funny the heavy metal take of Mary Poppins by Henry Zebrowski is and we have no doubt something insanely and hysterical unexpected is going to be read live next month at Lyric Hyperion.

Tickets for this latest edition of Never Seen It are on sale now and you can (and very much should) get them here.

The Lyric Hyperion has become a destination to see comedy that’s different, boundary pushing, genre-blending, eye-opening, and, of course, so much damn fun.

One of the pillars of the theater is the occasional runs of the “Monday Nights” crew of Bill O’Neill, Courtney Pauroso, Natalie Palimides, Chad Damiani, Juzo Yoshida, Max Baumgarten, Ian Bratschie, and Christina Catherine Martinez led by Lyric Hyperion ringleader and artistic director Dr. Brown. They are the best of the best of their clowning/solo performers banded together for some top shelf tomfoolery (plenty have won awards and they even got to be featured on FX’s Cake last year).

Mon. Feb. 17th at 7PM will see the return of the Monday Night Crew for a special fundraiser benefit for the Lyric Hyperion (as a non-profit, it needs all of our support). Tickets are $15 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

The endlessly creative and funny Lindsay Ames has been spending the better part of 2019 building the scrumptious web series Make That Sandwich where she makes some of the most delicious looking sandwiches that have ever been conceived.

To kick off 2020, Lindsay is not only doing some live sandwich making for a live edition of Make That Sandwich, but coupling it with live comedy by having comedians “help” her MAKE THAT SANDWICH. The line-up is pretty robust as you can see with Adam Conover from Adam Ruins Everything, Jade Catta-Preta, the new host of The Soup, the fantastic podcast Get Rick Nick, and wonderful comedian Jessimae Peluso.

Sounds pretty grand, no? For all of this, tickets are only $10 right now ($15 at door). Go snag some right now right here.

Whether they’re yanks or from across a pond (or a giant pond), it’s a mind-bending variety night of comedy that has some of the best boundary pushing comedians around (Natalie Palamides, BriTANick, Courtney Pauroso, and, of course, hosts Zach [Zucker] & Viggo [Venn]).

Tickets are only $15 for Stamptown Comedy later this month on Fri. Jan. 17th. Go get ‘em before they sell out here.

We’re not exactly sure what’s going to happen here, but, then again, that is the magic and wonder that is the absurdist experimental comedy offered up humbly by Kyle Mizono and Anna Seregina.

There will be some holiday surprises, guests, but, apparently, you’ve got to stand at the door? Again, it’s a little vague as to what that will be, but we trust in Kyle and Anna to make the best immersive holiday comedy experience with whatever secret plans they have in store for us all.

The mystery of Come Home for the Holidays with Kyle and Anna but Please Stand at the Door at Lyric Hyperion next weekend will probably rival the mystery of opening up any holiday gift.

Dubbed as “The Jokey Show”, Whitmer Thomas is indeed taking his monthly slot at The Satellite and having all the comics dress up as the fictional character from DC Comics, The Joker (which will even be more intriguing considering nearly all of the line-up is comprised of women). Apart from that, we’re guessing some of them will be doing a normal stand-up set, but, then again, maybe they’ll try doing stand-up as some iteration of The Joker, anywhere from Cesar Romero to Joaquin Phoenix.

In any case, we’re fully on board for this stunt and whatever it ends up being and definitely think you should be in attendance to see what happens. Also, the line-up is fantastic with-or-without a Joker costume. Get tickets here.

Damn.

We saw Fiona Landers’ Funeral Bouquet show not really knowing what to expect (outside of a loosely dark comedic solo show as the show’s title suggests).

What we saw was a wallop of an autobiographical musical that exquisitely leaves it all, and we mean all, on the stage. It exceeded our expectations being more enthralling, darker, and funnier than we had kind of anticipated. Truly, Fiona’s stories accompanied by deftly constructed songs that touch on cancer, death, and rape cover the range of being so damn funny to being so damn heartbreaking (all in the best way possible). In so many ways, Funeral Bouquet shows how amazing and unforgettable a solo show can potentially be.

The next performance of Funeral Bouquet will be Mon., July 15th at 10PM at Lyric Hyperion. Tickets are $10. Please go get them here.

As you might have seen on Barry, acting classes and workshops can be, well, a bit much (especially when it comes to the egos crashing into each other around the room).

The wonderfully talented pairing of Drew Droege and Sam Pancake (The Golden Girlz) are taking that idea to the next level by putting on an “acting workshop” with Droege playing a taskmaster of head of said “acting workshop/mixer” and Pancake as a “intern/proctor/star student” that will show you “how to make it in the biz”.

In fact, they even go so far as to request, if in attendance, that you “Please bring a CURRENT headshot with resume CUT AND STAPLED on the back,” and, “Please wear audition-ready clothing and prepare to move.”

Also, this night is called We Are Special Bitches, which would hopefully seal the deal for you to head to the Cavern Club Celebrity Theatre at Casita Del Camo in Silverlake later this month.
