Bob Odenkirk Is Officially Returning to (Kind of) Comedy with ‘Straight Man’ Series Order

April 21, 2022
News

(via THR)

For how iconic Bob Odenkirk is as a seminal figure in comedy history, a founder of so-called “alternative comedy”, and the co-star and co-creator of one of the most renowned sketch comedy series, Mr. Show, it’s strange to know that there is a whole generation of people that know him primarily for his work on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Odenkirk has been hailed as one of TV’s great characters Saul Goodman in this latest Golden Age of Television (and is pretty damn great in the not-praised-enough Undone), but that doesn’t mean that Bob will go the route of Richard Belzer (a lauded stand-up that is most known now for Law & Order).

Odenkirk has done bits here and there (and even done another round of sketch comedy via Netflix with With Bob & David), but it has been a long time since he has set his sights entirely on comedy. This next project at AMC (smart move on AMC’s part by keeping him in the fold) will be a dramedy that will have Bob at an English Department head at and underfunded rust belt college. Perhaps, a darker, more adult, college version of Abbott Elementary? Maybe, it’ll be a bit like the cameo he had on I Think You Should Leave?

It’s hard to say at this point, but the possibilities given Bob’s path that has wound thoroughly through praise and success in both sides of the comedy/drama spectrum leaves the world wide open. AMC’s penchant for anything comedy is more on the darker/dramatic side as shown by Kevin Can Go F Himself.

We’ll just have to wait for a teaser/trailer to see what Bob has up his sleeve with this project that’ll be called Straight Man, but we’re excited that Bob is coming back to, even partially, to comedy.

Comedy Central Orders Anthony Jeselnik Interview Series ‘Good Talk with Anthony Jeselnik’ to Series

Comedy Central Orders Anthony Jeselnik Interview Series ‘Good Talk with Anthony Jeselnik’ to Series

For six episodes that include chats with the likes of Kumail Nanjiani, Kristen Schaal, Nick Kroll, and Tig Notaro, Anthony Jeselnik will be an interviewer, perhaps on a more peer-to-peer level.

In fact, this might be your best chance to see Jeselnik drop the “heel comedian” persona a bit/break kayfabe, but we can’t say for sure right now. The mystery of how that might go is intriguing enough for us to want see Anthony has up his sleeve this time.

ABC Orders Nate Bargatze Sitcom from Nate and Jerrod Carmichael to Series

The life and comedy of Nate Bargatze seems to be one that might bridge a lot of divisions in the here and now. Just watch any of his stand-up and you’ll know that his carefully observed, homespun stories and observations delivered in the most down-to-earth way that we’ve ever seen and you’ll see what we mean.

So, a multi-cam sitcom centered on Bargatze is a smart move by ABC, though we’ll see if it makes out of the first season, which is becoming an increasing rarity for network comedies these days. Also, we’re curious with Jerrod Carmichael’s touch having The Carmichael Show under his belt and experiencing some EP success with the critically praised Ramy on Hulu.

Above all, we’ll be curious to see if America is game for another multi-cam sitcom based on the life of a comedian.

HBO Smartly Picks Up Armando Iannucci’s Latest Comedy ‘Avenue 5’ to Series

HBO Smartly Picks Up Armando Iannucci’s Latest Comedy ‘Avenue 5’ to Series

As Veep is closing out its final season, there was a bit of time where we weren’t sure if there was going to be an Armando Iannucci comedy (Iannucci is undoubtedly one of the most genius comedic minds working today; see In The Loop, Death of Stalin, Thick of It in addition to Veep) on TV for us to ravenously consume.

HBO thankfully will be passing the baton from Veep to Avenue 5, Armando’s latest comedy that will be set in the future of space tourism and will star Hugh Laurie as a space cruise captain. As to what that might look or sound like, we’ll have to wait for a trailer, but Iannucci’s biting, fast-paced, brutally funny writing really ought to work in most backdrops. Maybe it’ll be a more whipsmart, hysterical version of the space cruise scenes from The Fifth Element?

Whatever it may be, we, like with all of Iannucci’s work, can’t wait to see it.

NBC Is Going Forward with a Series Greenlight for Their Cross-Disciplinary Comedy Competition ‘Bring The Funny’

NBC Is Going Forward with a Series Greenlight for Their Cross-Disciplinary Comedy Competition ‘Bring The Funny’

Over 10 episodes, the supposed best in comedy across stand-up, sketch, improv, variety, etc. will be found in this new televised comedy competition, Bring The Funny. Effectively, it’ll take the place of Last Comic Standing at NBC.

Additionally, the judges will be Kenan Thompson, Jeff Foxworthy, and Chrissy Teigen and Amanda Seales will be covering hosting duties and a $250K “prize package” (we’re guessing that means you don’t get $250K in cash) will go the winner.

The concept, as we’ve said before, has us intrigued as we always appreciate any form of cross-pollination in comedy getting a greater platform and Seales as host is a solid move. However, we’re not thrilled with some of NBC’s choices for the judges panel or the cheesy name of the show or that they’re teaming up with Just For Laughs (essentially making this another JFL New Faces of Comedy?). If it gets someone truly original and undiscovered gets to rise to the top and receive the exposure they deserve, we guess it’ll be worth it then. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Hopefully, they’ll have open auditions where anyone will legitimately have a chance. We’ll keep you in the loop if we hear of those happening.

‘End of the F—ing World’ Duo Chuck Forsman and Jonathan Entwhistle Will Be Doing Another Dark Coming of Age Comedy Adapted from a Graphic Novel

The TV adaptation of Chuck Forsman’s End of the F**king World by Jonathan Entwhistle delighted Netflix viewers and critics alike at the top of 2017 (not to mention that the title and tone probably resonated with lots of people right after 2016).

So, Entwhistle will get to adapt another one of Forsman’s graphic novels I Am Not Okay With This that seems to be somewhat in the same ballpark: dark coming-of-age comedy, though, this time it’s focused on a girl getting mysterious super powers (possibly reminiscent of UK series The Misfits?).

So, if you’re really digging Entwhistle and Forsman together, you’ll be happy to know that you’re going to get a second season of End of the F**king World and a whole new show (as Netflix ordered 8 episodes) of I Am Not Okay With This.

Hulu Orders Two Seasons of Extraterrestrial Family Animated Comedy “Solar Opposites” from Rick and Morty’s Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan

Hulu Orders Two Seasons of Extraterrestrial Family Animated Comedy “Solar Opposites” from Rick and Morty’s Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan

When it comes to adult animation with a intergalactic/interdimensional setting, Justin Roiland might just have cornered the market.

This latest series order by Hulu from Roiland and Rick and Morty writer/EP Mike McMahan will follow an alien family taking refuge on Earth from “better planet”. That seems right in their wheelhouse and, as an added bonus, the sweet voice of the hilarious Mary Mack will be behind one of the characters.

Please note that you’ve got around two years before this comes out. Good thing there’s a bunch of Rick and Morty coming up to keep you satisfied in the meantime.

HBO Orders Spanish-Language Comedy ‘Los Espookys’ Written by Fred Armisen, Julio Torres, and Ana Fabrega to Series

Well, this is a much welcome surprise to find its way to HBO.

In case you didn’t know, Julio Torres and Ana Fabrega have been been off-beat English language comedy gems for quite some time and we can only imagine what will come with a Spanish language comedy that they’re writing with Armisen. They’ll also been co-starring in Los Espookys with Fred as well as Bernardo Velasco and Cassandra Ciangherotti.

From the sounds of it, Los Espookys sounds kind of like Atlanta on FX, but done in Mexico City and focuses in on trying to make it in the horror genre rather than rap. That’s pretty much all we need to hear to wait with bated breath for the first teaser/trailer.

Donald Glover and His Brother Stephen Glover Will Now Get to Make an Animated Deadpool Series for FXx

Donald Glover and Stephen Glover or, The Glover Brothers, if we may, made their presence known right out of the gate with the award winning Atlanta (Donald created, starred in and wrote the series and Stephen also wrote along with doing some of the music for the show).

Now, they’ll get to take the R-rated comedy box office smash hit action comedy Deadpool and adapt for television on FXx for 10 episodes. At that network, we’re guessing the tone, style, and “blueness” of the humor will be mostly preserved.

At this point, we have no doubt that Glover could get score an EGOT if he wanted.

TruTV Orders 10 Episodes of an Amy Sedaris Comedy Series

Attention Strangers with Candy fans (i.e. probably a lot of you reading this), Amy Sedaris will be doing her own show on TruTV for ten episodes where she comedically presents all of her hobbies, skills, obsessions, etc.

Perhaps, this might be Sedaris’ version of Jon Glaser Loves Gear, which is something we’ll completely sign on for.

There’s a lot of things to be excited for here including:
-Rashida Jones making more television
-TNT expanding its branding into dramedy.
-another female led ensemble underworld that might give that newly announced DC female villains movie a run for its money
-Niecy Nash starring with diverse cast
-a dark dramedy centered around a nail salon

Look for 10 episodes of Claws coming next year.

Many of you don’t even know the greatness that’s about to come with Guy Branum’s Talk Show the Game Show being made into a TV show, but, hopefully, you’ll know soon enough thanks to TruTV.

Today, via press release, TruTV announced its upcoming slate of programming and development that happened to have plenty of things that have us excited for the network in 2017.

With a Trump Administration looming, Adam Conover and his ‘bigly’ tendency to ruin things will be very nice to have for a sixteen episode second season of Adam Ruins Everything.

Guy Branum’s Talk Show the Game Show is a competitive talk show where guests have to compete to be the best, most interesting guest dealing with the sharp wit of host Guy Branum. It’s a gem here in LA that we’ve enjoyed for years and we can’t wait for the rest of the country to see what happens when guests can just rely on the story of their weird ride to the airport to get through a late night segment.

Sketch duo Austin Martinez got to incubate on Rachel Dratch’s Late Night Snack on TruTV and will now get upgraded to developing a series of their own. An animated family marijuana dispensary comedy from Martin Starr and Matt Bush is also in development.

In addition to that upcoming Bobcat Goldthwait anthology series, TruTV could have a pretty great 2017.

That Tracy Morgan Series Co-Created by Jordan Peele and John Carcieri Is Going to Series at  TBS

Take a look at that TBS programming line-up again and you just might be surprised (again) with what they’ve done this year.

Originally at FX, Tracy Morgan was set to star in this comedy that would have him star as a man released from prison after serving 15 years, then have to adapt to a Brooklyn that’s much different than he remembers. FX passed on this show from Jordan Peele and Vice Principals co-executive producer and writer, John Carcieri, but TBS made a sure to get a series order before the show landed somewhere else.

Remember when the only thing that you probably watched on TBS was Conan? TBS looks like they’re doing a pretty good job in making sure that doesn’t happen again.

8 episodes are set to air in 2017.

From a monthly show at a black box theater to a TV special Josh Adam Meyers and The Comedy Jam Band have reached new heights by getting a series order from Comedy Central.

They had to drop the “Goddamn” from the name, but that shouldn’t hold back from how much of a raucous party that Meyers and company will throw. If getting Coolio to join Pete Davidson on stage for Gangsta’s Paradise was just the start, imagine what they’ll do next.

We said we wanted another version of Tough Crowd on Comedy Central and the comedy gods listened.

Announced today, Comedy Central has ordered its latest series which will be panel debate show taking on the most controversial, divisive, and polarizing topics today between comedians and audience members.

It’s aptly called Problematic with Moshe Kasher and Moshe will be leading the way through each episode, injecting the funny where people might normally lean towards biting each other’s heads off.

If you’ve listened to Hound Tall with Moshe Kasher and listened to how Moshe breaks down hot button topics in his own stand-up, you’ll know that there’s more than plenty of promise here.

HBO Orders Duplass Brothers Chain Hotel Anthology Comedy Series ‘Room 104’ | Deadline

FYI, all Togetherness fans, Mark and Jay Duplass are back at HBO. You can rest slightly more easy now.

Also, as this will be an anthology set at a chain hotel, this will be a fascinating, possibly more free sandbox for the Duplass brothers to play in.

We can’t wait to see what they come up with in 2017 when the series is set to debut.

TruTV Orders Bobcat Goldthwait Anthology Series “Bobcat Goldthwait’s Messed Up Stories”

It looks like Bobcat Goldthwait will finally bring his filmic vision (a la World’s Greatest Dad, Windy City Heat, Sleeping Dogs Lie, God Bless America), which he has been celebrated for, on to the small screen.

TruTV’s latest series order is quite the doozy as they’re giving Bobcat Goldthwait, who had been serving as a director on Those Who Can’t on TruTV, his own show that allows Bobcat to tell an anthology of different stories in different genres, all at his own whim.

Whether it be “1970s-era science fiction, psychological thriller, romantic comedy and reality”, Goldthwait will get to put his lens on it, which is reliably dark, unapologetic, and always hysterical.

If you’ve seen Bobcat’s work as an auteur, you’d know this is a big deal.

Hannibal Buress Gets Series Order For Topical Show “Why?” From Comedy Central

(via Deadline)

Unlike the time when Hannibal Buress really jumped the gun and announced that Comedy Central picked up his series on Twitter in an attempt to perhaps visualize his goals, Hannibal has really gotten an official series order where he basically gets to talk about and do what he wants.

Comedy Central has ordered 8 episodes of Why? which will feature Buress talking about the burning issues of the day, the ones he cares about anyway, and feature pre-taped segments, man-on-the-street bits, etc.

It sounds a little bit like Chapelle’s Show, but with Hannibal leading the way, we have no problem with that whatsoever and look forward to the premiere.

Once, it was a pilot at the USA Network, but now, Difficult People with Billy Eichner and Julie Klausner has gone straight to series over at Hulu.

Amy Poehler is still on board as an executive producer and the show merely follows whatever the hell Eichner and Klausner get themselves into in NYC.

So, all the elements of this show (the cast, producers, premise, and it being at Hulu) promise something that has the potential to be pretty fantastic.

Man Seeking Woman Starring Jay Baruchel Gets Series Order at FXx

FXx finally gets a new comedy series following the last few series pick ups of FX including Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll. Jay Baruchel will star in this series that extolls the horrors of dating based on the book The Last Girlfriend on Earth by Simon Rich.

Given the subject matter, we wonder if FX and FXx will have a crossover episode with You’re The Worst or Married.

Denis Leary has returned to FX after a hit run with Rescue Me with his rock comedy series Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll. Leary plays Johnny Rock who is trying to get his life back together as well as reunite the band, which could be fun to watch with Leary as a former rock star.

We’re curious to see if FX or FXx will ultimately air this come next year. We’re guessing FX.
