Rory Scovel Is Simply Magical at The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail

August 14, 2014
Uncategorized
comedy central, nerdmelt, rory scovel, the meltdown

Rory Scovel is one of the most spectacular comedians right now and you really need to do yourself a favor and just watch everything he does. That way, you would be sure to catch Rory go for an applause record (i.e. having the audience never stop clapping) and crowd surfing while simultaneously telling jokes  at The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail.

If you love the playfully unstoppable spirit of Robin Williams live on stage, you will absolutely love this.

With the addition of Emily Heller to the cast, TBS’ Ground Floor will know have two absolutely hilarious comedians on the show as regulars. Heller joins Rory Scovel for Ground Floor’s second season as a socially awkward business wunderkind. Joining the cast also marks a move up for Emily who used to write for another Bill Lawrence show, Surviving Jack.

We’re glad to see that Ground Floor EP Bill Lawrence has pretty great taste when it comes to stand-ups.

Go Through A Moving Portrait Exhibit of Comedians with Scott Moran’s Comedian Screen Tests

Scott Moran, the force behind Modern Comedian, has made a new web series where he captures 4 to 5 minutes of a comedian in front of a camera sans audio. They just inhabit the frame as they choose, much like you would see them in perhaps an animated portrait in a gallery exhibit at a museum.

So far, he’s gotten comedian screen tests of Hannibal Buress, Rory Scovel, Jim Gaffigan, Kristen Schaal, Nick Turner, Colin Quinn, Kurt Braunohler, Jared Logan, Shock G, and Chris Distefano.

If you can afford it, you definitely should have these all playing on separate screens in a gallery on a loop.

Web talk shows have flooded the Internet over the last few years and it’s easy for so many of them to get lost amongst the crowd. One of those lost was Jake Weisman’s Chit Chat, an entire web series that lasted only one episode featuring guest, the hilarious Rory Scovel, and now, has been uncovered.

Give it a watch and maybe you can find out why “there was” only one episode.

MOCA, The Museum Of Contemporary Art here in LA, has started an initiative to meld the worlds of art and comedy by reaching out to comedians for collaborations. This initiative is very succinctly called Art + Comedy.

So, they worked with the amazing Rory Scovel and Rory came up with his video art piece “Everywhere at Once” which we think hits the intersection of high art and comedy that MOCA is looking for.

Only 4 Chances Left To Catch Holy Fuck

One of LA’s best live comedy shows, carefully built and curated over years by Dave Ross and Jeff Wattenhofer is unfortunately coming to an end. They made an album, went to a comedy festival, and accomplished so many great things on top of getting hundreds of people to see live comedy in Los Angeles (Downtown Los Angeles, no less). Congratulations to them and everyone that was a part of the show.

So, there will be four more shows of theirs to catch including tonight’s show where the hysterical Rory Scovel will be doing an hour. Fortunately, the show is being handed off to Austin Wolf-Sothern, Jay Weingarten, Doug Freedman, Travis Rust, and Ryan Schumaker and will be called Sleepaway Camp, so we don’t have to worry about having comedy at the Downtown Independent Theater on Tuesdays.

1) Watch comedic brilliance by Jon Dore & Rory Scovel on Conan. Oh yeah, they might do the same thing at Meltdown Comics on August 11th.

2) Want to be on a “High School Talent Show”?

Hot House, which normally hosts a fantastic “secret” comedy show, is putting the 3rd Annual Hot House High School Talent Show.  Already, it’s half booked, but if you’re interested, the show is on Thurs. July 21st 8PM and they’re looking to book all types of variety/comedy/character acts of varying lengths – but – no stand up (unless it is part of a larger character piece).

The basic theme of the night is the show takes place in a High School Auditorium hosted by the Vice Principal of Affairs.  Talent must decide up front whether to play a Student or an Administrator. And all acts should be between thirty seconds to three minutes (five if there is a real need) And let us know the general concept beforehand.

Nothing is too small or too stupid.  Please email mariecolette24@gmail.com if interested.

3) So Café Muse, to those comedians that put up with its open mic or shows, is now gone.  No more comedy will take place within its walls despite it being next door to the Comedy Central Stages.  We’re frankly surprised that it lasted this long as every time we’ve been there something along the lines of a frustrated white kid in his late 20’s would ask anyone who was black to be his black friend 5 minutes over the light would happen.

4) Don’t follow @MitziShore.  It’s not her.  Besides, gaining favor with her and an audition to be passed at the Comedy Store is a whole lot harder than just getting a fake account of her to follow you on Twitter.

5) Compatish goes cup stacking…

6) Weird Al Yankovic writes/confesses lyrics for the Conan theme.

7) Puddin’-“Books”

8) ON THE HORIZON

11) I tried defending Tree of Life to my sister and mother who sat through it with me and the best I could come up with was, “Well, it’s best if you don’t try to figure it out.”  Now, if I only could write jokes that work like that.

Hamclown: The One Type of Clown I Like

May 26, 2011
Uncategorized
alexandria hotel, brody stevens, comedy scene, comedy shows, independent, jackie kashian, kyle kinane, los angeles, maria bamford, recap, review, rory scovel

What exactly is a “Hamclown”?  I was one of those silent many that had an aversion to clown, but Hamclown is something different altogether and certainly not to be feared by anybody.

If you type “hamclown” into Google, you’ll actually get redirected to results for “ham clown” and never see any of the results for the amazing comedy and music variety show taking place in downtown LA on 5th and Spring.

Instead, you’ll first be directed to hamsexy.com, which, as far as I can gather, is a blog about amateur radio.  Even though hamsexy.com has been around for much longer than Hamclown, the results for googling “hamclown” need to change.

On the last Thursday of every month, producers and talented stand-up comedians themselves Josh Androsky and Grant Pardee take over the 2nd Floor of the Alexandria Hotel, more commonly known as the Mezz.  Their comedy extravaganza features several of LA’s best stand-ups, Kyle Kinane, Rory Scovel, Brody Stevens, Maria Bamford, and more, sketch comedy that borders on a full scale stage production, and amazing local bands to close out the show.

Really, Hamclown goes above and beyond for laughter from their constantly growing audience. At the last edition of Hamclown, Androsky and Pardee went for a prom theme, temporarily renaming their show “Hamprom”, dressing up as if it was actually prom; Androsky wore a dress and heels.  They even had a prom photographer with a prom backdrop.  As if that wasn’t enough, Androsky went into a spectacular musical number while still in a dress and heels featuring back-up dancers and lots of goo in which he let out his inner woman and then wooed the “hot high school quarterback” (played by Aaron Alberstein).

I would almost say that you get your bang for your buck at Hamclown, but that would be a false statement as you don’t spend anything to see this youthful comedic romp in a cool bohemian space that has to have been used in several rock music videos of either Lenny Kravitz or Perry Farrell.  It’s free of charge just like many independently produced comedys shows around LA are, but, already, Hamclown has been mentioned in the LA Times as part of a story about the exciting group of comedy shows taking place in Downtown.

If you’re convinced or curious, the next Hamclown is taking place tomorrow 9PM, as mentioned, at the Mezz on the 2nd Floor of the Alexandria Hotel, 501 S. Spring St., Los Angeles, CA featuring two of the Comedy Bureau’s favorite comedians: Ron Lynch and Jackie Kashian.  In other words, be there (you won’t be square if you don’t, but you’ll regret your absence).  Follow them on Twitter and Facebook or check back at the Comedy Bureau for more updates and possibly what exactly a “hamclown” is other than a hip, hilarous comedy circus minus the animals and clowns (not a big fan of either anyway).
