Adult Swim Has Ordered Four Spin-Offs from Its Most Beloved Series (Rick & Morty, Robot Chicken, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell)

May 21, 2021
News
albama jackson, aqua teen hunger force, aquadonk sidepieces, donald faison, rick and morty, robot chicken, vindicators, your pretty face is going to hell

In a sweeping move, Adult Swim, which is still operating on late night hours on Cartoon Network, and then massively online and throughout streaming services afterwards, their latest round of series orders are spin-offs. For the majority of their programming, Adult Swim has been fiercely dedicated to original programming that would very likely not have a home anywhere else (at least until the ascent of Netflix and, as of late, FX’s foray into animation).

So, announced this week, Adult Swim has bestowed series orders on The Vindicators (Rick & Morty’s satirical version of The Avengers), Alabama Jackson (a spin-off from the Robot Chicken Universe), Aquadonk Side Pieces (the lives of the lesser and other characters of Aqua Teen Hunger Force) and an animated version of Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell.

It should stand as a testament to how truly prolific Adult Swim is with a slate full of new darkly comedic (or, in some cases, horrific) animated series in addition to these four spin-offs (we’re personally excited to see how far The Vindicators is going to skewer the MCU, DCEU, and whatever else universe sourced from popular IP of any kind).

We’re sure that the continued troubles of in-person, live action production during the pandemic (which, again, isn’t over) has further encouraged a focus on animation rather than shooting shows and movies with real people and that helps in this case too.

Here are the Comedy Nominees for 72nd Primetime Emmys

July 28, 2020
News
a black lady sketch show, comedy nominees, emmys, insecure, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, marvelous mrs maisel, nicole byer, nominations, primetime emmys, ramy, robot chicken, schitts creek, snl, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, what we do in the shadows

For the 72nd Primetime Emmys, many of the perennial favorites got their nominations like Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, SNL, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Dave Chappelle Schitt’s Creek, Hannah Gadsby in the categories they perennially occupy.

However, there are a few pleasant surprises (there always a few) in this year’s Emmys nominations including A Black Lady Sketch Show, Ramy, Robot Chicken, What We Do in the Shadows, Nicole Byer as host of Nailed It!, and FX’s Cake. What We Do In The Shadows and Insecure actually very much earned their spots in the Outstanding Comedy Series category as they have probably been the two most beloved current/new comedies during the entire pandemic.

Voting will run through the end of next month and the winners will be announced on Sept. 20th by Jimmy Kimmel. We’re going to guess that will be not the normal Emmys telecast chock full of celebrities dressed to the nines.

Take a gander at all the comedy nominees below. Get a full list of all the nominees for the 72nd Primetime Emmys here via Deadline.

Adult Swim Con Will Be Adult Swim’s First Virtual Convention

July 20, 2020
News
adult swim, rick and morty, robot chicken

Adult Swim has tended to be on the bleeding edge when it comes to presentation. Being an entire network that broadcasts within the late late hours on Cartoon Network is still forward thinking even though they’ve been doing so for several years.

With mass gatherings being strongly, strongly discouraged, Adult Swim won’t be stifled in creating something that brings all their fans together. The network already has an incredibly strong presence online and, with all things considered, is opting to do their very own online convention dubbed “Adult Swim Con”.

Adult Swim wants to get to this ASAP, so they’re putting on their Adult Swim Con this Thursday, July 24th-Saturday, July 25th and featuring a variety within their universe of absurd, out there, and completely silly. This will include all sorts of discussions, live music, etc. from the likes of Robot Chicken, Rick & Morty, and Flying Lotus.

You don’t even have to buy an expensive pass or wait in long lines. All you’ll have to do is tune in at adultswimcon.com.

Here’s the full, brightly colored scheduled for this weekend:

Comic Con Is Going Virtual This Year, Will Still Have Plenty of Comedy Panels, and Will Be Free

July 9, 2020
News
adventure time, American Dad!, archer, Bless the Harts, bob's burgers, comic con, Crossing Swords, Duncanville, family guy, Infinity Train, looney tunes, phineas and ferb, robot chicken, solar opposites, superstore, The Boys, the-simpsons, Upload, what we do in the shadows

Something the size of world famous, annual San Diego Comic-Con obviously isn’t going to happen this year due to the pandemic. However, rather than just outright postponing, Comic-Con is going to try for virtual editions of their renowned panels that reveal insider info and details from creators and talent of movies, TV, comic-books, etc.

They’re calling it Comic-Con@Home and it’ll stream from Jul. 22nd-26th and, best of all, it’ll be free (or maybe not waiting to get into Hall H is better?). This virtual edition of SDCC will include panel discussion from What We Do In the Shadows, Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, Solar Opposites, Robot Chicken, Archer, Crossing Swords, Duncanville, Upload, The Boys, Superstore, Adventure Time, Infinity Train, Phineas and Ferb, Bless the Harts, American Dad!, Family Guy, Looney Tunes, and Bill & Ted Face the Music.

Look through the entire Comic-Con@Home schedule and get details on how to stream all of these events here.

Robot Chicken really doubled up when headed to Comic Con this year.

Season 9 of the stop motion animated series will take on Mad Max, Westworld, and even Homestar Runner. On top of that, Seth Green and co. will be dedicating a whole special that sends up the hit zombie drama, Walking Dead.

Sounds pretty fun, right?

Both will be coming soon to Adult Swim, but, until then you can watch trailers for both here and here respectively.

Looks like Adult Swim is going to continue to stay ahead of the curb.

Not only do they have an exciting crop of original series, specials, and pilots here, but they have a bunch of daily/weekly events that are scheduled like linear TV series, but will only be only live streaming online, then archived afterwards. Apparently, the success of sports show parody FishCenter has paved the way for more real time, interactive programming/content from Adult Swim.

Here’s what they’ve got going right at the moment:

SERIES/SPECIALS:

-A Robot Chicken: The Walking Dead Special
–Montana James-frequent Adult Swim informercial collaborators Nick Corirossi and Charles Ingram that is most likely an absurdist take on Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.
–Mr. Neighbor’s House–Brian Huskey plays a rage-filled version of Mr. Rogers-esque host.
–Brett Gelman’s Dinner in America–Brett Gelman and Jason Woliner’s latest twisted, dark meta special with have a dinner where Brett attempts a conversation about race.
–Dream Corp, LLC-a workplace comedy set in a therapy facility where they analyze dreams. It’s probably not unlike a workplace set at Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’s Lacuna Inc.
–Million Dollar Extreme Presents: World Peace-Sam Hyde, Nick Rochefort, Charles Carroll finally get to bring their self-described “super pure tragicomedy” to TV.
–Brad Neely’s Harg Nallin’ Sclopio Peepio-A new “one-off bits, shorts and songs” filled show from China, IL’s Brad Neely.
–Decker: Unclassified-the action series parody starring Tim Heidecker gets upgraded to a full series.

PILOTS:

–Art Prison–Tom Kauffman and Paul Isakson get the guiding hand of Dan Harmon and Starburns Industries for this live action pilot that puts an America’s Got Talent-style show in the so-called Prison for the Performing Arts.
–Lazor Wulf-Henry Bonsu and China IL’s Daniel Weidenfeld brings us all a wolf that has a laser on his back and who just happens to believe love has no limit.

LIVE STREAM/CALL-IN:

–Stupid Morning Bullshit-call-in show that mixes delving into pop culture and setting things on fire. Weekdays at 8AM PST
–Williams Street Swap Shop-Viewers trade goods in a sort call-in swap meet. Weekdays at 10AM PST
–Crosswords-call-in show that seeks help finishing the NY Times crossword puzzle. Weekdays at 11AM PST
–FishCenter-Fish in a fish tank are made, via sports show style graphics, to look like they’re in a fiercely competitive league. Weekdays at 1PM PST
–Call of Karaoke-call-in karaoke is mashed-up with hosts trying to play various shoot-em up style video games. Wednesdays at 2:30PM PST
–Daytime Fighting League-Real people are pitted against each other in ridiculous competitions during the workday. Calls are taken from viewers wanting to weigh in on the “fight”. Thursdays at 2PM PST
–Sports Bitches-sports in the real and virtual world meet as what would be a normal sports shows gets another layer of the host playing sports video games on top of it. Thursdays at 3PM PST
–Development Meeting-Adult Swim development executives will supposedly take call-in pitches as well as get sneak peeks and previews. Thursdays at 4:30PM PST

Season 8 of “Robot Chicken” Premieres Tonight

Midnight on Adult Swim.

10 years ago, Seth Green has led a team of full grown adults into making absurdist stop-motion animation cartoons with his favorite action figures at Robot Chicken.

As a result, it’s now one of the pillars of Adult Swim and, with several collaboration specials and the 8th season kicking off tonight, it doesn’t look like that will change anytime soon.

Midnight on Adult Swim.

While you’re still waiting for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, something to watch in the DC Comics Universe will be the third Robot Chicken DC Comics special, premiering tonight.

Since it’s the Robot Chicken crew cracking jokes with stop motion animation, we’re almost sure that there’ll be way less controversy than Batman v. Superman has caused.

T.J. Miller, Mila Kunis, Bob Odenkirk, Susan Sarandon, Rob Riggle, Danny McBride, and Nick Swardson voice the characters for this stop motion animation romp through the underworld, Hell and Back, where two friends try to rescue their friend from the mistaken clutches of hell.

The writing and directing includes three Robot Chicken alums, Ross Shuman, Hugh Sterbakov, and Zeb Wells as well as Tom Gianas who has written on and directed anything from SNL, Mr. Show, Drunk History, Human Giant.

An R-rated stop motion animated comedy already peaked our interest, but this red band trailer should make Hell and Back all the more intriguing to you when it premieres Oct. 9th.

While DC still has a ways to go to catch up to Marvel’s current film franchise run (as well as getting on the good side of Chris Gethard), they get to still enjoy the gonzo stop motion animation treatment from Robot Chicken with their DC Comics Specials.

You can see the trailer, released at Comic-Con this past weekend, watch it here, then look for it on Adult Swim this fall.

Looks like The Awesomes have a cross-online streaming service rival.

Bryan Cranston has a lot of irons on the fire post-Breaking Bad and finally one of them has been taken out and hammered it into what seems to be a fun sort of spin-off from Robot Chicken (Stoopid Buddy Studios, the folks behind Robot Chicken, produce this show) for Crackle, SuperMansion.

It follows old superheroes trying to stay relevant and feel meaningful in the world of today, though much more edgy and adult than The Incredibles seemingly a little more than Hulu’s similar series, The Awesomes.

It also boasts a star studded voice cast with Seth Green, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, Jillian Bell, Chris Pine, Ron Perlman, Famke Janssen, Donald Faison, Breckin Meyer, Anton Yelchin, and Nick Kroll.

Watch the trailer, which just made its premiere at Comic-Con, here, then look for its premiere this Fall on Crackle.

-Pilots from/with Paul Scheer, Million Dollar Extreme, Brian Huskey, Jason Mantzoukas, a Mexican border amusement park, Seth Green, Matt Senreich, Daniel Weidenfeld, DJ Douggpound, Bento Box, a children’s show hosted by a person that has rage issues, Rob Corddry, an upstart terrorist organization, and more.

We hope we get to see all of this very soon.

Get ready for Cranston to be done up Robot Chicken style.

In announcing their entire upcoming slate, Crackle has unveiled an animated series starring Bryan Cranston that’s set for release in the fall. Collaborating with Robot Chicken’s Matthew Senreich and Zeb Wells, Cranston will star as an older superhero attempting to lead other older superheroes in SuperMansion. Seth Green, Keegan Michael-Key, and Jillian Bell will also be featured voices in the cast.

Now we’re wondering if Seth Meyers’ The Awesomes on Hulu and SuperMansion’s superhero team “The League of Freedom” would ever have a cross streaming service showdown.

So, There Might Be a Series by Robot Chicken’s Matt Senreich Voiced by Bryan Cranston

It’s only natural that so many comedy folks were on Breaking Bad that Bryan Cranston follow up his starring role as Walter White with a turn to an old over-the-hill superhero, right?

We’re assuming that there’ll be a more official announcement of where we can see this (though it’d be hard to imagine it not being at Adult Swim) soon.

It’ll be interesting to see what they come up with and if it takes up way more time than the usual couch gag on The Simpsons. We also wonder when a Simpsons Museum comes around, will there be a whole gallery dedicated to the couch gag.

Check it at 8PM on Fox.

Anything But a “Cartoon Dump”

Almost a decade ago, an underground trend of “made-bad-on-purpose” cartoons started to rise. From Space Ghost: Coast to Coast all the way to Robot Chicken, Cartoon Network has almost developed a whole entire new vein of their brand based on said trend, Adult Swim.  Harkening back to very poorly produced cartoons of the sixties and seventies and even earlier then juxtapose clever and/or absurdist writing questioning the whole poorly defined cartoon universe has become popular to the point that it’s pretty much its own genre.

Yet, the original cartoons that are being referenced so frequently and tangentially are very close to being completely lost.  THANKFULLY, there is CARTOON DUMP, a live monthly show at the always amazing Steve Allen Theater in Los Feliz that continues this tradition of actually bad cartoons through actual screenings and live comedy sketches, stand up, and music.

If you’re curious as to how bad one of these “gems” are, consider one called “Captain Fathom”, which utilizes animation technology so lo-fi that pretty much only the mouths are “animated” as a real human mouth is superimposed over the animation.  This program might sound interesting in a kitschy/nostalgic/hip sort of a way, but the writing, voice talent, etc. are to a “paint-by-numbers” degree of complexity and they even managed to paint in the numbers in the wrong order.  The story supposedly pits Captain Fathom, whoseremotely piloting, maybe (it’s not really clear), a deep sea vessel against a similar looking, but different colored deep sea vessel.  Some lights flash across the screen and only through some faint grunts can the audience discern that there is a battle happening after which Captain Fathom apparently won.  Again, its unclear what has been accomplished by this as no motion by the characters has really taken place.  Another bad cartoon simply consisted of physical fitness tips, though, due to poor/lazy drawing and conceptual development, comes off as laughable when the butt of the fitness expert is highlighted by a halo while he’s bent over.

Written and created by Mystery Science Theater 3000’s very own Frank Conniff and co-produced by cartoon historian Jerry Beck since 2007, Cartoon Dump is a genius idea of show executed to perfection as the unintentionally terrible cartoons are legitimately painful to watch, then balanced out by the awesome mix of live sketches and stand up comedy from comedy heavy hitters such as Kyle Kinane whose been on featured on Comedy Central twice within the span of a month, and the legendary Emo Phillips (who by himself, telling only 5 jokes made the show completely worth the $10 price of admission).

As a straight stand up comedy show, that’s an already fantastic line-up that would sell out hundreds of seats.  Yet, Conniff dresses up as Moodsy the Clinically Depressed Owl who banters back and forth with co-host Compost Brite, comedian Erica Doering in a red leotard and a comically forced smile, do their own live version of a “bad cartoon”, of course, with the ultra clever, hysterical quips on pop culture/current events (something that Conniff is quite good at, especially @frankconniff) and their own misguided cartoon universe complete with an actual prop dumpster that foul mouthed puppets come out of and a scantily clad woman (Kristin Arrigo) a la Jessica Rabbit and make Cartoon Dump one of those shows that already have a loyal following, but should have an even bigger one.  Special guests Emo Phillips and Kyle Kinane did their own take on the Cartoon Dump by respectively playing theme songs to supposedly rejected bigoted cartoons and reading cartoon series pitches that are really a metaphor for Kyle’s misery.

In a city that’s full of stand up showcases that rival most festivals on a week night, Cartoon Dump is a refreshing, wildly original comedy variety show that will delight the high falutin’ “Tim and Eric” crowd as well as though who just want go out on the town and have a laugh.  Check out their Youtube Channel and Facebook page and/or merch page.

Cartoon Dump takes place on the 4th Monday of the month at the Steve Allen Theater 4773 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA (Los Feliz).
