Uncategorized
bridgetown comedy festival, documentary, kickstarter, portland

One of our favorite comedy festivals in the world is The Bridgetown Comedy Festival for so many reasons and there is a documentary now being made about it as well as the thriving comedy scene up in Portland, OR.

They’re shooting for $11,500 over the next month and we’d love this to be made and more people find out about what is oft referred to as “comedy summer camp”. Just look at the clip of Todd Glass in this sizzle reel and tell us that isn’t fun.

Watch and donate here.

You’re Following the Hilarious, Wonderful Chaos Happening Up at The Bridgetown Comedy Festival From Andy Peters, Right?

As you read this, The Bridgetown Comedy Festival up in Portland, OR is well under way and if you’re not already at it, you might want to follow Andy Peters’ Wandertown podcast on Soundcloud.

He’s got bits with Todd Glass, little clips of great shows like Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction, comedians walking through the lovely neighborhoods of Portland, heading into strip clubs with Byron Bowers, hanging at vintage arcades with Ron Babcock, and overall just a bunch of fun that we’re all missing being anywhere that isn’t Portland.

Every year, around just about now (specifically next weekend Apr. 18th-21st), the city of Portland, OR hosts the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, an amazing weekend of great comedy that has been oft and best described as “comedy summer camp”. SoundCloud has partnered up with the great folks at CleftClips (Super Serious Show, Hot Tub LA) to have the festival covered and documented with one of our favorite comedians, Andy Peters.

There will be comedian interviews, random encounters, and overall silliness coming from the Peters’ “Wandertown” at Bridgetown dispatches. You can and should hear all of that coming up very soon here.

1) Last night, I went to the “scene” open mic in Portland at Suki’s and immediately thought, “Man, I wish I started comedy in Portland.”  Ironically enough, as I’m dropping in from LA, the entire Portland comedy scene, which apparently was in attendance, was saying good bye to one of their heroes Richard Bain, who is coming down to LA.  From the greenest-of-the-green-newbies to mainstays and respected figures in Portland comedy, everyone was there in support of Bain.

LA is so huge, just physically, and many comedians are so incredibly busy with their own act, sketch group that has to put a video out weekly, podcast that records whenever it gets a chance, show or two that they have to produce and promote, that the whole comedy scene in LA could never be in full attendance of anything.  Yet, seeing even more camaraderie in comedy than the pockets of it that exist in LA would not only intrinsically make for better comedy, but would further dispel that image that LA’s a soul sucking town.

So, yes, I’m saying that if you’re a comedian in LA, go see a show that you’re not on or go support another comedian without trying to get booked.

2) Congratulations to Nick Kroll on getting the Nick Show Kroll picked up and Peter Atencio being attached to the Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele Project all for Comedy Central.  Also, congrats to Comedy Central for making some solid picks for this season. [via Deadline]

Dave Ross: Cats and Pussy Live at Bridgetown!

davetotheross:

Totally forgot to post this. You’ll love it! (Maybe!)

It was so much fun to do a live recording of this podcast. Finally, Jake and I got to act like retards in real life. The episode ran through a star-studded cast of hilarious guests, including Paul Danke, Paul Jay, Jen Goldberg,

OH, how I wish I was there for this, but there was too much awesome comedy for one person to handle, probably just like this podcast all rolled into one.

The Bridgetown Tapes: An Interview with Kyle Kinane

May 10, 2011
Uncategorized
bridgetown comedy festival, interview, kyle kinane, pete holmes, portland

While at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland, Bureau Director Jake Kroeger got to catch a word with some of the most talked about comedians at the festival.  Here, Kyle Kinane had just won another year of Nato Green’s comedy take on Iron Chef, “Iron Comic”, in which comedians write new material on the spot and compete against at each other.  The following is a transcript of their conversation as Kyle as congratulated by several fans and fellow comedians throughout the interview.

This is Bureau Director Jake Kroeger here at the 2011 Bridgetown Comedy Festival up in Portland Oregon in the Bagdad Theatre with Kyle Kinane who just defended his Iron Comic Title.  What are you going to do now Kyle?

Do you not know who you are when you record into your own iPhone?

No, I don’t.

It feels great [winning].  Feels good to keep the crown of the city.

Feels good taking Doug Benson to school at the end there?

Yeah, take that you successful comedian.  He still, clearly, had a nice, fun time.

That seemed to be one of your techniques in the Iron Comic competition, calling them out.  You called out Hannibal Buress at one point.

I was insulting him because he farted backstage.  He was going for a distraction and it worked.  I had to make a comment.  But, Iron Comic is a fun show to do with comedians that you like.  It’s just a fun time, no pressure.  I mean, it’s just a little pressure because it’s “write something right now” and that just makes me nervous and fills me with panic because I’m not an improviser, but it’s fun cause you’re with your friends.

That was another thing that I noticed about the Iron Comic competition that no one felt really bad…

(Enter San Francisco comedian Chris Garcia w/guitar who was hilarious throughout Bridgetown with his English language version of La Bamba)

Chris is going to serenade us.

Oh yeah, Chris Garcia is here everybody.

Garcia: Are you guys doing an interview?

Yeah, but I’m running it real loose.

Garcia: Cool.  I’m just tuning my guitar.

You were really funny by the way, singing in Spanish there.

Garcia: Thanks

(Exit Chris Garcia)

(Back to Kyle) You did Hell Yes Fest in Austin, but you are based in LA, and are now in the Bridgetown Comedy Festival here in Portland.  How are you liking Portland?

I’ve been here for every one [of the Bridgetown Festivals].  There goes Nato Green, founder of Iron Comic (Green walks by).  It’s great.  It’s always a blast  I’ve built a following here over the years… following? It’s like four people know who I am here as opposed to the “nobody” in another city.

Those four people clap quite loudly, Kyle.

They’re nice. They’re nice people.  It’s a great scene.  I mean, you’ve walked around.  You see that this is the perfect demographic for this type of comedy.

That was I was curious about because back in LA we get line-ups likes this with you and people like Hannibal Buress every night and it’s over-saturated, then you come here [Portland] and people are ready to willing to laugh.

It’s one of those crowds that where you know you could do the weirdest stuff.  They appreciate all this particular type of comedy.  It’s booked by Andy Wood who knows this city and knows what type of comedy and festival he wants to put forth and everybody comes here because they love it.  Everybody is happy to come this city.

Why?

Cause it’s great.  It’s a great city.  All the venues are close together.  All your friends are coming here, so it’s comedy summer camp.  All my friends are here. You’re here.  Everybody from LA.  Nick Rutherford, Moshe Kasher, all these guys, and people do lose their shit with strip clubs and free booze.  Because it’s all your friends and you’re all in a collective vacation where you get to do all these awesome shows and then go party with all your friends.

Yes.  Day 1 and 2 at Bridgetown was like that first day you get to college like after living at home for so long.

You over do it.

Yeah, you think “Yeah, we’re going to frat row, bro!” then wake up at 3 in the afternoon the next day.  What have been some highlights of the festival whether you’ve been performing or people you’ve seen?

I mean, all the shows; I got to do Kurt and Kristen’s, which was great.

Hot Tub was awesome!

(Kyle looks at Maria, one of the festival’s dedicated volunteers) See that? SEE THAT? Interview, guys.

Someone’s being kidnapped during this interview, apparently.  Not Kyle.

That’s Maria.  She needs to go somewhere.  See?  I know everybody here.

Yeah, Maria’s being kidnapped to Seattle.

(Kyle laughing) I like how it’s still going…

Commitment.  I’m just going to transcribe all of this and a lot of it’s going to be deleted.

Is this getting written?

Yes, it’s getting written.

You’re going to write it out, but you still have to say this is Jake Kroeger of the Comedy Bureau into your own iPhone.

I need some self-affirmation sometimes.

That’s fascinating to me.

I pretty much hate myself most of the time.

You’re the one coordinating it…

(Maria walks over) Maria:  I’m part of the festival. This is going to be the part where you write in parentheses (cough)–

Kyle: Cough.

(doubled over laughing)

Maria: Yeah, [you’ll write] cough… Maria walks over and hugs Kyle goodbye and hugs you goodbye.  I am leaving.

(Maria hugs Kyle and me goodbye)

In parentheses, a bunch of unnecessary shit.

I’m saying good bye to my friends.

Oh yeah, that was the person who kept saying her shuttle was full to me.

Oh, was that her?

Yeah, she was saying her shuttle (Maria drove a shuttle for the festival) was full every time I asked to get a ride somewhere.

Well, I didn’t take the shuttle.  I walked all the way here.  Had to get the blood flowing.

You walked all the way here from Hotel 50 (the official hotel of Bridgetown 2011)?

Yeah, it’s far.

I did that the first day.  The problem was that I kept looking at this map that was out of proportion and thought, “Oh, that isn’t that far,” and I just kept walking.

It’s like 2 and ½ miles…

But, I took my time, stopped at a brewery, drank some beer…

There’s a lot of stuff to see.

Yeah, then accidentally eating a chocolate chip cookie with bacon in it.

Accident?  That’s not an accident.  Wait, are you a vegetarian?

I’m not a vegetarian.  It’s just that….

I thought you were about to say pot or something…

No, no, it was just that there wasn’t a label or anything so it looks like a chocolate chip cookie.

Another reason why this city’s great.  They’re creative with their food items.

Yeah, it was disgusting at first, but it got better the more that I ate it.  Then somebody else was there, distressed when they found meat in their cookie and I told them, “Keep eating it.”

That’s right, don’t ask questions [about chocolate chip bacon cookies].  This isn’t a city about asking questions.  Don’t ask questions, but know that you have to live with your decisions.

Anyways, Hot Tub with Kurt Braunholer and Kristen Schaal was awesome.  I was there.

It was awesome.

You were great.  Was there anything else that was that great that you happen to catch?

I saw my show and I saw the storytelling show.

“This Is Not Happening”?

Yeah, “This Is Not Happening” that happened here [at the Bagdad Theater].

Who told your favorite story on that show?

I watched…

…Moshe Kasher?

I missed Moshe.  I saw Brendan McGowan and Mike Burns and saw those guys lose their shit.

Burns did almost have a meltdown, but it was funny.

Yeah, it was just Burns being Burns being great, but I missed Moshe, which everyone said was one of the most amazing shows and I missed it.  I’m a little pissed about that.  I haven’t seen Nick Rutherford at all this weekend.  Pete Holmes, I’ve seen…

Pete Holmes pulled it out.  Andy Dick did his thing [go 20 minutes over his time] and I talked to Pete earlier in the day and he was like, “I don’t want to follow Andy Dick.  I don’t want to follow Andy Dick.”  That was the one thing that he didn’t want to have happen on the show.  It happened and he pulled it out.

Of course he did, it’s Pete Holmes.

He crushed all day.  I saw him even at breakfast and he was doing crowd work and it was amazing.

It’s Pete.  The guy just makes me happy.  He is my anti-depressant.  It’s just like, “Oh, Pete’s here… everything’s good.”

It’s really amazing.  Did you catch Ari Shaffir open up in darkness? (Yes, Ari Shaffir started “This Is Not Happening” in complete darkness)

Yes, like they had just open the theater, like the first day of this theater.  It was dark, there was music, the curtains don’t close.

Did you think it was a moment of humanity when these 20 people put their flashlight apps on and lit him [Ari Shaffir] on stage?

It was nice.

I thought it was amazing that they wanted to see comedy so bad that they were going to hold lights so Ari could perform.

Yeah, that’s the kind of place this is.  Very nice people.

I wish we had more of that in LA, but I know it’s kind of impossible.

Ahh, it’s in there.  It’s just spread out.

That’s the problem Kyle.  People think LA is just Hollywood, East LA, and Santa Monica.  That’s it.

Fuck’em.

That’s right.  Fuck’em.

I like that people hate it [LA].

Any final thoughts?  You just had your Comedy Central special…

Just a lot of road work and a lot of keeping my brains together so I don’t lose my shit being away from home all the time.

You’re great man.  I feel privileged talking to you.  I remember we were at Public House (a great weekly stand-up showcase in LA) and you were developing that bit about having a specific amount of money and you go through all these images like you needing your teeth worked on and you didn’t remember what a labyrinth was and you asked me.

Thanks, man.  I appreciate it.  Since that’s happened, it [that bit] has been on John Oliver and I got my teeth fixed.

Can’t Even Dream This Up: Day 3 of Bridgetown

April 24, 2011

bridgetown comedy festival, comedy death ray, doug stanhope, jay larson, kristen schaal, last comic standing, los angeles, nick thune, pete holmes, portland, tell your friends

The prize festival packages so often offered on the radio or in promotions that promise an all expense paid, behind-the-scenes, once-in-a-lifetime, in-the-thick-of-it experience usually never live up to any such description.  How good can a week hanging out with Black Eyed Peas honestly be, especially if you can even partially think for yourself?

Though, I, Comedy Bureau Director Jake Kroeger, didn’t win a prize of any sorts, Day 3 at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival certainly surpassed any expectation that winning back stage tickets off the radio could ever promise.

First off, I stumbled into comedians Pete Holmes, Nick Thune, and Jay Larson and had one of the most entertaining breakfasts I can ever remember.  Normally, eating with comedians can be trying as I’ve had the fact that I ordered breakfast at 3AM riffed on like it was some bad improv sketch that will never end.  Yet, sitting and eating at one of Portland’s one of finest dining establishments, Mother’s Bistro, I laughed so hard at Holmes trying to do crowd work while we were waiting to order, Thune trying to figure out loopholes and inconsistencies in the menu pricing, and Larson cleverly commenting the whole time.  It was top notch back and forth banter between all three of them, especially when everyone at the table including Holmes himself was critiquing his riffing and crowd work throughout the meal.

Even more intriguing than hearing Holmes, who is about to record his CD next month, Thune, whose album Thick Noon was widely praised, and Larson who just recorded his album a few weeks ago at the Hollywood Improv, shoot the shit was hearing about their very first shows.  Some people might think of this as the alt-comedy version of Talking Funny, which is really just a “big name” version of Paul Provenza’s Green Room on Showtime, but it was really remarkable to hear about Holmes just going up and doing a long set for his very first show, which was in private with family and friends, Thune talk about developing his delivery, and Larson talk about how he wrote a brand new 5 minutes every week, doing well right from the start, performing at a club in Boston, and getting up to 45 minutes of material before he realized he should probably start repeating some of it.

This was just breakfast. I hadn’t even gone to a show for the festival yet and the day is already at one of those “good night, then drop the mic” moments.

Later, I walked in late on Victor Varnado’s comedy concert film Tell Your Friends at the Bagdad Theatre that a trailer that surfaced briefly online hyping the movie as an alternative comedy documentary.  Though only getting to see a portion of the film, I found it immensely interesting that in between full performances between Reggie Watts and the duo of Kurt Braunholer and Kristen Schaal, there several interspersed talking head clips of Jim Gaffigan, Marc Maron, and several others in the comedy world, without regard to their status as an alternative or mainstream comic, try to discern what alternative comedy is and who qualifies or doesn’t qualify as an “alt comic”.

Ultimately, whether any of the interviewees were criticizing alt comedy for bordering too close to performance art or considered to be a part of the movement, everyone sort of agreed that the label “alternative” was pushed on them by the industry and was not self-styled, insisting that they’re just a bunch of people trying to be funny in their own different, unique way.  At one point, Reggie Watts commented that he thinks something he did on stage is really good when someone tells him, “That was so stupid.”  Though no real answer or explanation really came about for Tell Your Friend’s query, I’d definitely see it again.

Staying at the Bagdad Theatre, I caught “This Is Not Happening”, a monthly storytelling showcase back in LA featuring some of the country’s best comedians stripping off whatever stage persona they usually have and telling an honest story based on a theme, which, on this edition, was shame.  At this particular show, there were so many technical difficulties to deal with, it was truly surprising and endearing how the humanity of an audience showed itself.

Starting off, host Ari Shaffir took the stage in complete darkness.  No stage lights were on for a good 7 minutes, but that didn’t matter as about 20 people seated in the vast 500 seat Bagdad Theatre lit Shaffir with their flashlight apps on their smart phones.  Everyone wanted to see comedy that badly.  Once the lights finally lit up, cheers abounded and Shaffir moved onto a story about shame, but was, again, held back by background music continuing to play throughout his set.  Still, people laughed the whole way through because they pretty much invested their entire evening in laughing and weren’t going to be hindered by any sort of technical nightmare.

Even when comedian Mike Burns took the stage to the sound of an accidentally tripped fire alarm, no one left their seats and Burns riffed off of the incessant buzzing for a big portion of his set to wild applause.  Andy Dick went way over his time and struggled to stay focused on telling his story about shame, which people expected to be “juicy”, but Pete Holmes “brought the heat” just like he did at breakfast and destroyed like nothing that came before him had gone wrong with his hysterical story about visiting a massage parlor in Amsterdam.  Moshe Kasher also had a magnificent set with a story about becoming a man much in the way that “This Is Not Happening” had intended with being honest to the point of being metaphorically naked on stage, relating to the topic, and the tech, lights and sound all, working.  I’m still reveling in how much people were “on board” for whatever happened on the show and how much they wanted to laugh at people’s stories of shame.

A showcase of Last Comic Standing finalists/semi-finalists quickly followed This Is Not Happening at the Bagdad Theatre and showed that live comedy is much better than TV’s recreation of it.  Without any sort of language and extremely rigid time restriction, comedians James Adomian, Jesse Case, and NYC’s Claudia Cogan put any doubts of their comedic skills and talents that were repeatedly cut and repackaged for NBC.

Leaving Bagdad after about five hours worth of show, I walked to the Mt. Tabor Theatre Main Room interviewing James Adomian and the Whitest Kids U Know’s very own Trevor Moore on Bridgetown and Adomian’s rock star status in Portland.  Transcribed interview to follow soon.

Most people after nearing a full work day of being an audience member would take a break or just stop altogether in watching live shows of any sort, but the prospect of seeing Kurt Braunholer and Kristen Schaal’s Hot Tub kept me going.  As a variety show hailing from NYC, Braunholer and Schaal were hilarious from the top of the show with their “Win A Date with Kristen Schaal” game/sketch to when they took their bows along with a stellar line-up of LA based performers (perhaps there comedy wall between NYC and LA is slowing coming down) including Kyle Kinane, Nick Thune, Brett Gelman, Jon Daly, and my third run-in of Pete Holmes.  From Kinane’s stories of calling cabs to go to Wendy’s to Daly’s uproariously absurd character, Drunken English Roller-blading Tree to Gelman doing one of the most “meta” things I’ve ever seen in having an audience member read an “article” written about him in the NY times on stage, Hot Tub proved to be, at the loud resounding laughs of an over-capacity crowd, one of the best shows of Bridgetown.

At this point on this in the evening, I had seen Pete Holmes kill it three times and while walking with him down Hawthorne back to the Bagdad Theatre, I ended up watching him do it again for a fourth time as a drop-in on a show where one audience member had asked if Doug Stanhope was going to perform.  After this year’s Bridgetown is over, there should be no doubts about the comedy of Pete Holmes.  As one woman told me after seeing Holmes at Comedy Death Ray Live in LA, Pete does some beautiful stand up.

This concludes Day 3 at Bridgetown, which, in reflecting back on it is something that couldn’t be even dreamed up.  One more day left here before the LA comedy scene goes back home and I’m feeling legitimately like a kid, strangely enough, for the first time.  I hope Portland appreciates this fact and/or the festival in the same way.

LA’s in Portland (at Bridgetown)

The Comedy Bureau is actually taking its first excursion from LA this weekend to Portland for the 3rd Annual Bridgetown Comedy Festival!

Not only is it a more than reasonable festival to attend with $75 all access pass, but over a third of the scheduled performers at Bridgetown are currently based out of LA, many of whom I see at performing at various bars and garages and rearranged apartments on a regular basis.  Now, many of the best, funniest, most original, well-known, on-the-rise, and hardly known (even back home) comics from LA’s comedy scene and from several other places around the U.S. will take the stage for all of Portland, the Pacific Northwest, and perhaps some real hardcore comedy nerds who flew out from elsewhere, and the Comedy Bureau will be here at Bridgetown for all of it.

I could make a long list like everyone else blogging about it is doing in regards to who is showing up to this thing, but I think it’s a waste, especially when Bridgetown was voted Punchline Magazine Readers’ Favorite Comedy Festival of 2010.

If you really want to find when Kyle Kinane is going up or see Kristen Schaal’s name on the list of performers, then here you go:

Bridgetown Schedule

Bridgetown List of Performers

Expect daily recaps, interviews, pics, and whatever else the Bureau Director can muster.  For those back home stuck in traffic trying to come up with #obamatraffic jokes, LA news, comedy crawls, and open mic runs will still be there.

I won’t be at an open mic in LA to find new ways to depress anyone whose listening unless you’ll be at the all night open mic that’s here for Bridgetown at the Tanker.  Details on that to come as well, perhaps in live-tweet form @thecomedybureau.

Stay tuned.

3) Continuing in awesome comedy music acts that I saw last night at the Tomorrow Show, I had a chance to be berated for not being from Portland by MOP, which was not at all shocking and also, hilarious.  Though this clip isn’t “music”, but since I don’t know where they’re playing next, it’ll have to do.
