Satirical War Comedy “War Machine” Starring Brad Pitt Headed to Netflix

June 8, 2015
Uncategorized

(via Deadline)

You knew that Netflix was going to get into features and this is a pretty good way to start.

Based on the book The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War In Afghanistan by Michael Hastings, Brad Pitt will star in War Machine as a General that takes after real life former Gen. Stanley McChrystal. As it will be written and directed by David Michod whose resume includes such dark dramas like The Rover, you can expect this to go stark and dark with its comedy.

Netflix will distribute the movie in 2016 after its theatrical run. By that time, we wonder if more war and comedy will continue to cross paths like they have with The Brink and Aloha.

Petition Grows For The Stars of “Grace and Frankie” To Be Paid Like They’re Stars

(via The Wrap)

Apparently, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, who play the titular stars of “Grace and Frankie” are paid as much as male supporting cast members Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen.

While the pay is equal here, the simple matter of fact is that Fonda and Tomlin are the top-billed stars of the show, which should warrant the most pay. However, it’s not the case and there doesn’t seem to be any apparent good reason for it.

Do Waterston and Sheen have a pricy rate for online streaming series these days? Even if they are, Fonda and Tomlin are just as established and that should bring back the difference in pay back to who is higher on the cast member totem pole.

It’s very similar to a sports team paying their star players as much as the rest of the team, even though they’re the stat sheet leaders night after night.

As of this post, the petition has over 9.500 signatures on  and you can sign it here.

You’ve probably watched more stand-up and documentaries than you’ve probably ever before thanks to Netflix and now you’ll get a timely mix of the two.

The documentary that has followed Tig Notaro through all her trials and tribulations and coming out of it still as one of the funniest people around, “Tig” is coming to Netflix on July 17th.

So, after this, Tig will be one step closer to hosting the Oscars, right?

New Episodes of “Arrested Development” Coming in Mid-2016

Over a month ago, Brian Grazer mentioned in passing that there were more episodes of Arrested Development coming. Now, you can have a time frame to look forward to.

Production, with everyone coming back, will begin at the beginning of 2016 and then come out approximately after a calendar season. Hopefully, they can have most of the Bluths together again.

Though not mentioned in Grazer’s last podcast appearance, Arrested Development is staying at Netflix. So, don’t be surprised if Netflix will account for even more Internet traffic at this time next year than the third in North America that they already do right now.

While you’re probably still suspicious of Netflix’s reviving Full House, they are doing well to also focus on their own homegrown original comedy series.

BoJack Horseman is about to premiere in July and now, another season of Grace and Frankie is set for 2016. Jane Fonda tweeted out the news last night.

If they continue the path they’re on now, Netflix will probably have a much bigger original comedy slate by the time this next season of Grace and Frankie comes out.

If you haven’t already had a nice Memorial Day Weekend, this news should do the trick.

According to our sources, Netflix has ordered an original series from Maria Bamford, Mitchell Hurwitz, and Pam Brady (South Park, Team America).

Hurwitz, who made Bamford one of the most memorable parts of season 4 of Arrested Development, and Brady created the series as a starring vehicle for Maria who will also be writer and an executive producer. Details on the plot are being kept under wraps at this time.

Though we’re in the dark on the story, we are still completely on board for pretty much anything starring Maria.

It may be brief and subtle, but what more do you need than a small gesture and some Christmas attire to mark the coming of a Bill Murray/Sofia Coppola Christmas special?

Maybe some echoes of Lost in Translation?

Well, luckily, this teaser for “A Very Murray Christmas” coming to Netflix in December has all of this.

Just announced today, your favorite animated complicated former sitcom star horse BoJack Horseman is raring up for a second season this summer.

As series creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg amazingly shifted the tone and arc of the BoJack to something a little more dramatic and introspective in the middle of the first season, we can’t wait to see what he’ll pull off for season 2 as well what happened with that Secretariat movie.

One more round for (part of) the Parks and Rec gang?

Parks and Recreation creator Mike Schur and co-executive producer Alan Yang are back together with Aziz Ansari AKA Parks and Rec’s Tom Haverford for 10 episodes of a new series at Netflix.

Plot details are scarce, but the cast will feature Jon Benjamin, Noel Wells, and Eric Wareheim and Smashed and Spectacular Now director James Ponsoldt will direct.

No premiere date has been set, but the series is already in production.

It’s things like this that are making Netflix considered to be worth more than CBS, Viacom, and Twitter.

Plenty of .gifs of both Mr. Show and With Bob and David side by side with the same cast members are going to be made.

Paul F. Tompkins, Brian Posehn, John Ennis, Jay Johnston, Mark Rivers and Dino Stamatopoulos have rejoined Bob Odenkirk and David Cross in their new sketch series With Bob and David at Netflix (that also includes one behind the scenes special).

Going off the idea that Bob and David are ex-Navy SEALs for this new series, it now makes us curious if Paul, Brian, John, Jay, Mark and Dino will also all be ex-Special Forces.

Tickets, Well, Waitlist Tickets Are Available For “With Bob and David” Tapings

Well, it was only announced this morning, so, of course, all the tickets are pretty much taken.

Now that Netflix has ordered four episodes and a special of “With Bob and David”, Bob Odenkirk and David Cross have moved forward with this new sketch show, which will include segments performed in front of a live audience.

Cross announced free tickets for the tapings that take place throughout this month at Andrita Studios. A short time passed before all the tickets were gone, but there is a waitlist if you want to hold out hope that anyone with a ticket might miss out.

There are tapings for With Bob and David on April 15th, 21st, 25th, and 30th.

Good luck if you don’t already have tickets.

To clarify, we’re not exactly clear on how the waitlist will work here, but all TV tapings do have waitlists/standby lines/etc. as they do not want an empty seat in the house. As soon as we know exactly how they’re going about a waitlist, we’ll let you know.

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin play “frenemies” that come together over their husbands, played by Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen, revealing that they are gay and in love with each other. You in?

Here’s the first trailer to give you a promising taste of what’s to come for Grace & Frankie. You can see that June Diane Raphael, Baron Vaughn, and more will also be in the mix

Given the premise, Grace & Frankie very easily could have been a multi cam sitcom, but it’s not and we think it will be all the better for it.

All the episodes will be released on Netflix on May 8th.

Netflix Adds Ricky Gervais’ “Special Correspondents” To Its Feature Film Slate

Netflix said they weren’t going to slow down and they’re keeping to their word.

Taking projects one by one from traditional media and distribution channels, Netflix already has a Pee Wee Herman movie from Judd Apatow coming their way and now has added Special Correspondents starring Ricky Gervais and Eric Bana on top of that.

Special Correspondents will follow journalists on the radio making up stories and the mess that follows. So a bit of Wag The Dog, Orson Welles’ War of The Worlds, perhaps?

We have a feeling that you should get ready for more of this sort of announcement from Netflix very soon.

Netflix scores, as far as we’re concerned, big again.

Already, Netflix has brought back Arrested Development, Wet Hot American Summer, and more and will now add to that list the likes of Bob Odenkirk and David Cross doing episodic television for their new show With Bob and David.

As Odenkirk has stated, it’s not going to be Mr. Show, but rather a new and improved sketch show with a lot of the same folks involved.

With Bob and David is currently in production and let’s hope we get to see it sometime later this year.

Netflix Planning To Raise Their Debt $1 Billion More For Content Including Comedy Series and Specials

(via Variety)

In order to follow up in their plans to release triple the amount of content that they did last year, Netflix is plunking down a big pile of IOUs, around a billon of them in fact.

The online streaming service is set to release 320 hours of their own content, which will include the Wet Hot American Summer mini-series, the next season of BoJack Horseman, and Aziz Ansari’s Live at Madison Square Garden just to name a few.

The four picture deal with The Duplass Brothers just struck at Sundance will probably benefit from this as well.

All told, Netflix seems like it’s full-fledged major studio/network as opposed to just an online streaming service.

Aziz Ansari is continuing his relationship between Netflix and his stand-up going as his next special will be released exclusively through the online streaming service.

Live at Madison Square Garden will be coming in for a release just over a month from now on Fri. Mar. 6th. Since Parks and Recreation is over, perhaps Ansari might dedicate even more of his time to stand-up and this special could just be the start of that.

Also, we’re not sure if it’s a trend or not, but it seems the title of many specials are returning to the classic “Live at [venue name]” model.

The Duplass Brothers Get Four-Picture Deal at Netflix

Whilst at The Sundance Film Festival right now, the festival that put first put Mark and Jay Duplass on Hollywood’s radar with their amazing short film “This Is John” all the way back in 2003, The Duplass Brothers have scored one of the biggest movie deals between a studio and talent in recent memory.

Netflix has signed a contract for Mark and Jay to make four films for the online streaming giant. 12 years after they shot a short film on a camcorder, The Duplass Brothers seem to achieve a dream of sorts at Sundance with this deal.

So, this might be the future as Netflix is full-fledged getting into moviemaking and The Duplass Brothers have got four entire features lined-up.
