Pick of the Day: Elefante [FREE] (in LA) 8/6

July 13, 2023
News
elefante, improv comedy, long form improv, los angeles comedy, ucb

Since pretty much all of Tinseltown is shut down due to the WGA going well into their third month of striking and SAG-AFTRA officially going on strike starting after midnight tonight, it might be helpful to point out/give a reminder of some of the great free offerings of comedy in and around town.

ASSSSCAT, UCB’s long standing, foundational improv show, back in the old days of UCB Franklin, used to go up every Sunday, free of charge. Since UCB’s return in LA, they now call their marquee long form improv show based on a monologist’s stories (that are based off an audience suggestion), Elefante. The show still takes UCB’s most veteran performers and favorite rising improv stars and showcase the very best of UCB improv, but just under a different animal-based moniker.

There is still a free edition of the show (normal tickets cost $20 a pop), but it happens once a month on a Sunday instead of every week. The next free Elefante is on Sun. Aug. 6th at 8:30PM @ UCB Franklin. To attend, you have to RSVP for a free ticket here, then line-up early enough to get in as admission is first come, first served.

Pick of the Day: Puppet Up! (in LA) 7/14-7/16 & 7/21-7/23

July 11, 2023
News
henson alternative, henson studios, los angeles comedy, puppet up, puppets

Puppet Up! is finally back. The Henson Alternative is assembling once again to bring you some of the best puppetry getting into the sort of chaos and mischief that isn’t really for kids. Pretty much every year, lucky LA folks will have a chance to not only step foot on the legendary Henson Recording Studios lot, specifically on the Charlie Chaplin Soundstage, immersed in Hollywood history, but also get to see many of the very best puppeteers/comedy folks (including Colleen Smith, Donna Kimball, Drew Massey, Geneviève Flati, Grant Baciocco, Raymond Carr, Ted Michaels, and music from Dan Ring) cut loose and go blue.

This 2023 edition of Puppet Up! will run from on the weekends for the next two weeks on Jul. 14th-16th & Jul. 21st-23rd with early and late shows on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets start at $75 and you best go get them here right now.

Pick of the Day: You’re Cordially Invited (in LA) 7/7

July 5, 2023
News
lexie koss, lilliana winkworth, los angeles comedy, ucb, wedding season

We’re in the thick of wedding season and this is a great opportunity to not only see the nuptials of a couple sanctifying their love under the eyes of the government, but also hear a bunch of speeches from, very likely, a whole host of people who have public speaking as one of their greatest fears.

With that in mind, a bunch of UCB folks led by Lexie Koss and Lilliana Winkworth will be highlighting the comedy gold that so often is presented with earnest, but misguided attempts at celebrating newlyweds with improvised wedding speeches (based off suggestions) at a new show at UCB Franklin, You’re Cordially Invited. Speakers/players include Andrew Knox, Skarlett Redd, Elizabeth Andrews, Damon Royster, Sophie Delaney, Jess Uhler, Ellie Race-Moore, Paul Heredia, and Matt Newman and you should save this Fri. Jul. 7th at 10PM (and $10) to join in this improvised wedding party.

You can (and very much should) get your tickets for this momentous occasion here.

Pick of the Day: Root for Farm2Power: Music & Comedy Fundraiser Show (in LA) 7/21

July 3, 2023
News
danielle perez, demi adejuyigbe, ellory smith, glendale, joel kim booster, junior high, los angeles comedy

The winds of change seem to have quite the mean bite to them these days. Whether it be SCOTUS, inflation, mass shootings, etc., it feels like a world that needs more of everyone trying to take care of one another.

One small thing you could do for community (as well as yourself) is going to a very, very special fundraiser music and comedy variety show for South Central Farmers Co-Op‘s Farm2Power. Not only will it be a very fun hip evening of amazing LA-sourced comedy and music at the splendid, all-inclusive arts space, Junior High, but it will be a night supporting a crucial LA org that gives free produce to those in need in the Greater LA area.

Thus far, they’ve got a fantastic line-up including LA comedy luminaries Danielle Perez, Joel Kim Booster, Demi Adejuyigbe, and Ellory Smith as well as sweet sounds from Adjenai, Rosie Tucker, and Amber & Max of Moonchild.

Root for Farm2Power is set for Fri. Jul. 21st with doors at 7PM. Tickets are only $10 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

Summer is officially in session, which means that the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is just around the corner. While it’s always enticing to take up an opportunity to watch as many of hundreds upon hundreds of shows, most of us don’t have the money to fly to Scotland, find a place to crash for a month, and THEN pay to see shows. At least performers have a shot to make some money maybe (though, more realistically, hoping to break even).

That’s why The Elysian Theater’s annual tradition of putting a whole day of their favorite LA comedy folks that are bound for the Edinburgh Fringe and presenting their shows back-to-back-to-back-to-back.

This particular Edinburgh Fringe Preview Day at The Elysian will run through 8 shows from 12:20PM to 11PM on Sat. Jul. 22nd. We’ve actually seen most of these shows already and tell you that it would be worth your night to catch any of them.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 170: Isaac Landfert & Keeping Orderly Chaos in the YARD

News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
isaac landfert, los angeles comedy, yard theater

This week’s TCB Field Report invites The YARD Theater’s GM and overall “guy at the YARD”, Isaac Landfert, to talk shop with TCB’s Jake Kroeger. Landfert explains the ins and outs of being a small, but very crucial theater in the LA comedy scene, specifically one that caters to folks trying to do something different/experimental/wild, especially when Fringe season comes around. It’s this sort of wondrous strangeness and cavalier experimentation that really has us coming back to the YARD all the time.

Pick of the Day: CityWalk the Musical (in LA) 7/15 & 8/22

June 28, 2023
News
citywalk the musical, los angeles comedy, musical, ucb

CityWalk, adjacent to Universal Studios Hollywood, is one of the stranger haunts of LA in that one can’t be quite sure if it’s designed for tourists or for those Angelenos that are looking for a off-beat corporate-ish shopping experience that’s outside of Universal Studios.

It’s this strangeness that is tapped for the engrossing and hilarious musical from UCB house team Moon Goon that dives head first into the real life uncanny valley of retail that is CityWalk (through the lens of a rom com to boot). The very first run of CityWalk the Musical sold out at UCB and, thankfully, Moon Goon and UCB are doing a couple more performances in the coming months.

Specifically, you can catch what might be the most LA-centric musical on Sat. Jul. 15th & Tues. Aug. 22nd at 7PM. Tickets are $20 and you best snag them up quick before they sell out again.

Pick of the Day: Comedy Nook Closing Party (in LA) 6/28

June 26, 2023
News
comedy nook, los angeles comedy

Well, it turns out 7456 Melrose Ave. is closing its doors (well, part of its doors since it’s kind of a theater complex) once again for a full time comedy venue. The Comedy Nook rose out of the ashes of what the pandemic hath wrought on local businesses, especially live performance venues that had go darker far longer than many other places. Many open mics and intimate shows took the stage at The Comedy Nook over the years thanks to the hard work and dedication of Nthenya Ndunda and Alexis Bradby.

Sadly, after two years and some change, The Comedy Nook is indeed closing down, but they won’t do so without a big party this Wed. Jun. 28th from 7:30PM-10:30PM where you can (and should) pay your respects (as well as enjoying DJ’ing from Bri Giger and some tasty tacos that you can get via donation).

It’s free to attend, but you should probably RSVP (so they make sure they can make enough tacos).

Pick of the Day: Open Up/Little Secret LA New Location Opening 6/23

June 22, 2023
News
film screening, little secret, los angeles comedy, queer

If you somehow don’t know where Frogtown is in LA, you best learn already. Not only is that the home to one of the LA comedy’s newest and brightest shining venues, The Elysian, but, as of this Friday, it’ll be the new neighborhood of Little Secret. Born in between the cracks of Netflix Valley in Hollywood, Little Secret is getting a bigger space that will be a little more free (which is kind of unbelievable if you’ve ever been to Little Secret before).

As part of setting foot in their new home, No Storage Productions will be premiering their new queer comedy short “Open Up” as well as throwing a marvelous little comedy show. The comedy stylings of Taylor Ortega, Rachel Pegram, Sarah Schauer, Madi Hart, and Rishi Mahesh will be on display all leading into the very first an afterparty at the new Little Secret.

Tickets are available for $5-$15 donation here or at the door. Get more info/tickets/etc. here.

Pick of the Day: James Austin Johnson: The Age of JAJ (in LA) 7/29

June 21, 2023
News
james austin johnson, largo, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

We remember James Austin Johnson, now a Saturday Night Live star, once went up at an open mic we used to host in Little Tokyo, eons ago, and crooned out Eagles songs done in full-on Scottish accent to raucous laughter. That was the very first time we saw him and, even then, we had a pretty good idea that he’d end up where he is now from just that set (and the same goes for pretty much every subsequent set we saw after that).

Having multiple seasons under his belt, JAJ is far from that open mic in a Mexican bar and restaurant that’s now a Metro LA station and on to touring all around the globe. Fortunately, one of those stops is back here in LA at none other than the venerable Largo at the Coronet Theatre.

Indeed, JAJ will stop at Largo for his Age of JAJ tour on Sat. Jul. 29th at 8PM. You can (and should) go get your tickets now for $46 a pop here.

June 19, 2023
News
andy beckerman, laci mosley, live podcast, los angeles comedy, naomi ekperigin, nori reed, permanent records roadhouse, shantira jackson

As far as comedy power couples go, there should be a lot more love and admiration for Naomi Ekperigin and Andy Beckerman, also known as the two hosts of the amazing podcast Couples Therapy. For five years, Ekperigin and Beckerman, both wonderful comedians/writers on their own (don’t forget that Naomi is one of the best parts of Mythic Quest) and guests have shared the humorous beauty of working things out between relationship partners, especially when quarantine hit.

This podcast isn’t the hit Showtime series of the same name, but, honestly, both things are so amazing, FYI.

To celebrate the occasion, they’re throwing a big 5th Anniversary for Couples Therapy outdoor shindig at one of LA’s new comedy hot spots, Permanent Records Roadhouse (that you can also live-stream if you’re still very much into not leaving your home like Naomi and Andy) on Fri. Jul. 7th at 7PM. Joining them will be the stories and comedy gems of Laci Mosley, Nori Reed, and Shantira Jackson.

Tickets are $10 right now and $10 for live-stream (and $15 for in-person on the day of) and you can (and should) go get them here.

Best Actress, best of, curtis cook, jessy morner ritt, los angeles comedy, milan patel, mk paulsen, roz hernandez, very best, who to watch

Our Director/Founder here at TCB, Jake Kroeger, watches comedy closely like no one else. Usually perched in the back of the room at multitudes of shows a night, every night of the week, he has a preternatural sense of comedy, especially when it comes to discovering who is deserving of the label “the next big thing”.

With all that in mind, Jake is going to assemble his very favorite comedians that deserve so much shine that they should be chased by everyone (i.e. “most wanted”) for a very special curated evening of comedy at Lyric Hyperion on Tues. Jun. 20th at 7:30PM of names you should be reading in Deadline for how damn funny they all are.

This edition of The Comedy Bureau’s Most Wanted List the brilliant comedic wares of

Jessy Morner-Ritt (most wanted for her comedic verve that balances joy and ridiculous abandon)

In the time since Babs’ last appearance on TCB Field Report, she has helped erect a venue in the backyard of the one and only Paul Provenza dubbed “The Green House” (via Paul’s brilliant Showtime series The Green Room with Paul Provenza). Unlike the majority of shows that happen at a person’s home or “house venues”, there’s such a plethora of wondrous comedy gatherings that happen at the sane space of The Green House and Babs details all of it as well as the journey it took to get to transforming a patch of gravel by a hot tub into a joyous place for comedy and comedy adjacent things.

Pick of the Day: Afternoon Delight with Brendon Walsh (in LA) 6/11

June 6, 2023
News
afternoon delight, brendon walsh, los angeles comedy, prank calls

Prank calls are kind of relic of comedy’s past (caller ID makes it a lot harder), but, for any of you that have done it or watched/listened to other comedy folks do it, you very well know that it can be a thrilling bit of chaotic fun (especially if “professionals” do it).

Well, very few folks crank a call quite like comedian/podcaster/prankster extraordinaire, Brendon Walsh. He was actually putting his skills on display by prank calling in front of a live audience with guests comedians, some of whom would actually be the target of the prank, with his live, in-person Afternoon Delight show. COVID-19 put that on pause for a very long time, but thankfully that wait for the next edition is coming to an end.

On Sun. Jun. 11th at the perfect time of 4:20PM, Brendon will take over The High Low in Los Feliz to do the latest Afternoon Delight, mixing stand-up and prank calls with very special guests Johnny Pemberton and Melissa Villaseñor. It’ll be the wildest afternoon you’ve probably had in awhile and we highly suggest you snag your $5 tickets right now right here.

Pick of the Day: Valley Vegas w/Neil Hamburger & Major Entertainer (near LA) 6/3

June 1, 2023
News
los angeles comedy, major entertainer, mark proksch, neil hamburger, the valley

For years and years and years, Neil Hamburger has had a premier LA comedy gathering under the banner of his name, usually somewhere in the hip epicenters of LA’s Eastside. Hamburger was at the beloved space The Satellite (that’s no longer with us), then at Zebulon, then, most recently, at Permanent Records Roadhouse.

Needless to say, the rest of the Greater LA Area hasn’t necessarily had much of a chance to not venture out/commute to one of the America’s Funnyman’s shows. However, this weekend, those unfortunate folks stuck in the Valley are not only getting a chance to catch Neil Hamburger, but Major Entertainer as played by everyone’s favorite Energy Vampire from What We Do in the Shadows, Mark Proksch.

Both Neil and Major Entertainer are doing a very special evening called Valley Vegas at the Corbin Bowl out in Tarzana that, to be honest, might be a perfect vibe for the alternate universe lounge act that is Neil Hamburger.

Doors are 8PM. Tickets are only $12 and you best go get them here right now.

Pick of the Day: Summer School: Entertainment Community Fund Benefit (in LA) 6/1

May 31, 2023
News
adam conover, andrew dismukes, jenny yang, katrina davis, los angeles comedy, mike o'brien, Sophie Delaney, virgil, wga strike, writer's strike

We’re almost at a month since this current WGA Strike began and all signs point towards it continuing for more weeks to come. As such, anything supporting the Entertainment Community Fund is crucial right now as many of those on the picket line are of humble means and are currently living off of reserves in their bank account.

There already have been a few comedy benefits supporting the ECF already in LA and NYC and there are sure more to come including the one, Summer School, happening this Thurs. Jun. 1st at 7PM at the Virgil that will double as a benefit for the ECF and People’s City Council Mutual Aid LA Fund.

The likes of such comedy stars (as well as a couple SNL folks) will be in attendance including: Andrew Dismukes, Adam Conover, Mike O’Brien, Jenny Yang, Katrina Davis, and Sophie Delaney along with hosts Aly Dixon, Elizabeth Schantz, and Jess Uhler.

Tickets are only $15 and admission is free for WGA members. Go get tickets and support the ECF/PCC Mutual Aid/WGA Strike here.

Pick of the Day: Feeld presents One Night Stand-Up (in NYC & LA) 6/13 & 6/27

May 30, 2023
News
anti roast, dating app, feeld, kink, los angeles comedy, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

Kink dating app of the moment, Feeld, is getting a little, dare we say, kinky as they’re putting on special one night only comedy shows in both LA and NYC. Not only have they tapped many of the best sex-positive comedians from either scene, but there will be a chance, if you’re up for it, to have your Feeld profile “anti-roasted” during the show.

Also, you’ll have a chance to meet plenty of Feeld folks in person at the low stakes environment of a comedy night (but maybe take things elsewhere if you find that special someone that’s exactly what you’re into).

Feeld presents One Night Stand Up is set for NYC at The Bell House in Brooklyn on Jun. 13th starting at 7PM with the comedy stylings of your host Ashley Ray as well as Dylan Adler, Marie Faustin, Spike Einbinder, and Clare O’Kane. Tickets are FREE!

The LA night is going to be at the spacious Echoplex in Echo Park on Jun. 27th 7PM with the likes of Ashley Ray taking on hosting duties again and Alison Stevenson, Brian Bahe, Hannah Pilkes, and Girl God. Once more, the tickets are the nice price of FREE!

Pick of the Day: Book Soup Presents Boom Chicago! (in LA) 6/29

May 25, 2023
News
book soup, boom chicago, ike barinholtz, live reading, los angeles comedy

If you’ve even had a cursory look into the history of live comedy, you’ve probably come across the name “Boom Chicago!” at least a couple of times. Acting as the Chicago improv pipeline to Amsterdam, numerous comedy stars made their bones at this renowned, sometimes infamous, institution. The likes of Seth Meyers, Jordan Peele, Ike Barinholtz, Colton Dunn, Heather Anne Campbell, and more have taken the Boom Chicago! stage all before their ascension in comedy.

It should stand to reason that there should be a book chronicling all of this, right? That’s why the release of Boom Chicago Presents the 30 Most Important Years in Dutch History by Andrew Moskos, Pep Rosenfeld, & Saskia Maas (the founders of Boom Chicago) is imminent very soon. Ike Barinholtz will be hosting a special evening, presented by Book Soup, with the aforementioned authors/founders as well as stellar Boom Chicago alums that will be part panel, part improv, all at Gold Diggers in Hollywood.

On the bill thus far are:
Suzi Barrett (Drunk History, Kirby Buckets)
Jill Benjamin (History of the World, Part II, GirlBoss)
Liz Cackowski (SNL, Community)
Heather Anne Campbell (Rick and Morty, Twilight Zone)
Colton Dunn (Key & Peele, Superstore)
Josh Meyers (History of the World, Part II, Red Oaks)
Nicole Parker (Wicked, MadTV)
Brendan Hunt (Ted Lasso)

Just a live reading of the book would be enough reason to go, but this is one of those stand-out, once a year type of shows that you absolutely don’t want to miss.

Book Soup Presents Boom Chicago! @ Gold Diggers is set for Thurs Jun. 29th at 8PM with tickets going for $38.58 (includes signed copy of Boom Chicago Presents the 30 Most Important Years in Dutch History). Go get tickets here, before they inevitably sell out (Gold Diggers isn’t that big, FYI).

News
daniel webb, desmond chiam, dr ally powell hicks, game show, health and wellness, jenny yang, joel kim booster, los angeles comedy, nicole byer, ron fnches, self help

With the conversation surrounding mental health being more prominent than ever in human history, one should wonder about how much they know about health and wellness (and not just what you’ve seen or heard of on Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop).

Lucky for us all, LA comedy’s Jenny Yang has created a self-help game show, Self Help Me, to test such niche knowledge and really dive into what’s really behind the latest trends in self-help (as well as create content through specialized anxieties). LA comedy scene favorites and wellness experts alike will face off and Yang is assembling quite the field of competitors including Nicole Byer, Joel Kim Booster, Ron Funches, Daniel Webb, Dr. Ally Powell-Hicks, and Desmond Chiam.

Pick of the Day: WGA Strike/Entertainment Community Fund Comedy Benefits (in LA & NYC)

May 16, 2023
News
dynasty typewriter, entertainment community fund, los angeles comedy, new york comedy, planet showbiz, ucb, wga strike, writer's strike

All signs point towards the Writers’ Strike lasting for quite some time. Don’t be surprised if this one goes as long as the last one (more than a couple months) or even longer.

As such, more support will be needed for many TV/movie writers who primary source of income will be on, shall we say, on hiatus for quite some time. Many a comedy writer is affected in this strike and, thankfully, there are plenty of benefits for the Entertainment Community Fund that will be supporting said comedy writers and writers of all ilks coming up.

Cast includes Beth Appel, Phil Augusta Jackson, Kassia Miller, Zeke Nicholson, Mike O’Brien, Lamar Woods. All profits go to Entertainment Community Fund. Tickets are $15.

For Tues. 5/23 at 8:30PM ET, Planet Showbiz in NYC will be putting on a special showcase of Tonight Show writers bringing you their best jokes with all proceeds goin to the Entertainment Community Fund. More specficially Mike Drucker, Martin Urbano, Kylie Brakeman, Becky Krause, Brooks Allison, Zahid Dewji, and Mike Hanford are all on the bill.  Tickets are $15.

May 26th @ 10:03PM PT. Tickets are once more $15.

Also, on 5/26, will be a stellar showcase of fantastic NYC comics who pay their bills as TV writers including Emmy Blontick, Karen Chee, Cole Escola, Larry Owens, Jes Tom, and Jeff Wright as well as music from Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner. Called Writers… On Stage?! No Way, it’s set for 7:30PM and tickets are $25.

Pick of the Day: Middle Aged Dad Jam Band (in LA) 5/20

May 15, 2023
News
little secret, los angeles comedy, musical comedy

If there was a middle aged dad jam band of your dreams, it would probably have Ken Marino and David Wain in it, right? Right.

So, with that in mind, you might want to get yourself a ticket to the so-called Middle Aged Dad Jam Band with Ken, David, Frank Barrera, Sweet Teddy P, Jon Spurney, Jordan Katz, and Henry Wain and find your way to Little Secret in Hollywood. It’ll be sweet jams that will have even sweeter, brilliant musical comedy guests including Weird Al Yankovic, Jo Lo Truglio, Jackie Tohn, and Jessica McKenna.

This round of Middle Aged Dad Jam Band is set for this Sat. May 20th with doors at 7PM and starting at 8PM. Also, you should know that all of this show is only coming to you for $15 if you get your tickets right now. Go get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: Big Titty Boyfriend: A Comedy Show and Fundraiser! (in LA) 6/9

May 11, 2023
News
benefit show, los angeles comedy, sammy mowrey, stand up comedy, top surgery

The importance of top surgery for trans/non-binary folks cannot be overstated. At the same time, it’s still far from an accessible procedure for many, which is why there are very special benefit shows to fund that very thing.

The wondrous, sharp-witted Sammy Mowrey is indeed committing to getting top surgery and throwing their own stacked (ironically, we guess) comedy show fundraiser (that will also be raising money for Sammy’s friend as part of her own transition). The marvelously named show “Sammy Mowrey Is Your Big Titty Boyfriend” will feature many of LA’s very best trans/non-binary comedians including Nori Reed, Roz Hernandez, Hayden Johnson, Ever Mainard, and Jake Noll to name a few.

Sammy Mowrey Is Your Big Titty Boyfriend is set for Fri. Jun. 6th at 8PM at Permanent Records Roadhouse, one of LA’s new Eastside comedy hot spots (and where Sammy does their routinely terrific show, Permanent Vacation). Tickets are available at the nice price of a $10 suggested donation and you really ought to go get them here

Pick of the Day: Maria Bamford Special Taping (near LA) 5/13

May 5, 2023
News
live taping, los angeles comedy, maria bamford, public displays of altadena, stand up comedy

It should be no secret, at this point, that Maria Bamford is one of our all time favorite comedians and any time she’s playing anywhere is an opportunity you really shouldn’t pass up. This is doubly true when it comes to her taping a brand new comedy special.

As it would turn out, Maria is taping her very first special next week and, in true Maria form, she is taping at her neighborhood venue, the burgeoning experimental micro-theater, Public Displays of Altadena. This shouldn’t come as surprise as Maria has taped previous specials in her home and at bookstores.

This latest taping is set for Sat. May 13th at 10:30AM (Maria is one of the few comedians on the planet that can pull off live stand-up comedy in the AM). Tickets are currently sold out (seating is very, very limited at a micro-theater after all), but you should really follow @pda_space and @mariabamfordcomedy on IG to see if any tickets are released or seats open up.
