TCB Debriefing 7/21/23: Harley Quinn S4, Barbie Previews Best of 2023, Solar Opposites S4, Rick & Morty, Problemista, Danny Masterson

July 21, 2023
News
a24, barbie, greta gerwig, harley quinn, julio torres, justin roiland, problemista, rick and morty, solar opposites, that 70s show

1. Harley Quinn, over 3 seasons, has managed to give a hysterical redo to a character that Margot Robbie has already mastered in live action DCEU. It’s one of the most subversive and raunchiest animated series on TV and season 4 is just around the corner. Take your first gander at the fourth season with this trailer, then look for it to stream exclusively on Max starting Jul. 27th.

2. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie scores the best previews box office best all year thus far with $22.3 million take between Wednesday and Thursday (THR). Going from Lady Bird to Little Women to Barbie, could Gerwig follow the roads of Richard Linklater or Steven Soderbergh and put her stamp on nearly every film genre possible? If that happens, we hope her body of work still ends up being mostly comedy because she’s really damn good at that.

3. Solar Opposites gives a more extended look/listen at/to Dan Stevens replacing Justin Roiland as one of the principal aliens on the show, Korvo, and being fully self-effacing about the whole thing. To be honest, it’s kind of really working for us. See for yourself with the season 4 trailer here, then look for the premiere exclusively on Hulu come Mon. Aug. 14th.

4. Speaking of replacing Justin Roiland in things, Rick and Morty are just going to cast soundalikes and not try to justify a whole character/voice change (THR). Knowing that many of the unprecedented amount of episodes that have been ordered and written and have yet to be animated (along with their still being a WGA strike right now), that’s probably the best choice. Best of luck to whomever will have to deal with Rick and Morty‘s rabid fanbase.

4a. Oh, let’s not forget that there’s an anime version of Rick and Morty coming out from Japanese anime director Takashi Sano and Telecom animation. So far, Morty seems more heroic and Rick seems less drunk, but there appears to be just as much multiversal chaos as ever. Get your first look at Rick and Morty: The Anime here.

5. The highly anticipated a24 comedy/Julio Torres vehicle, Problemista, which had been slated for release in just a couple of weeks, has had its release paused due to the double strike (Indiewire). This is somewhat ironic considering there is so much in Problemista that highlights how hard it is to make a living being a creative (especially if you’re an undocumented immigrant).

6. Fresh off of getting convicted of sexual assault, Danny Masterson has been almost entirely omitted from That 70’s Show activation at Comic-Con (Deadline). Whenever they get to That 2020’s Show, they better write a joke addressing this.

6. Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan should do the next AMC screening pre-roll because of the wild popularity of Barbenheimer and it’s irrefutable display of the majesty of cinema as well as that Nicole Kidman one that been overplayed for awhile now (and people still keep gleefully clapping for it).

Solar Opposites Season 2 Promises BDE, Human Wine, and More

News

The latest alien family on the block thought they were going to leave, but the Solar Opposites are very much staying on earth to incidentally (or very intentionally) wreak havoc here on this rock for season 2 of the Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan series.

Just from the looks of the trailer, there going to get way in over their intergalactic heads when it comes to trying to manipulate “big dick energy” and sourcing wine from “alternative sources” that lean way more to the unethical side of things. The chaos reigns once more with this dysfunctional alien family.

Get a taste of the wild ride that’s to come with season 2 of Solar Opposities here, then look for it to begin streaming on Hulu on Fri. Mar. 26th.

Get Your First (Red Band) Look at Season 2 of Solar Opposites

In alternate animated reality, there is a seemingly less insane world where a dysfunctional alien family tries to cope with being stuck on earth and incidentally wreaks havoc in the process.

The animated universe of Solar Opposites definitely has a bonkers side to it though and we’ll all be treated to another whole season of it within the scope of Biden’s first 100 days (i.e. things in our reality could still potentially be crazier than an animated one with emotionally unhinged aliens).

The second season of Solar Opposites premieres on Fri. Mar. 26th on Hulu and you can get a taste of the chaos to come with their very first season 2 teaser (that’s a red band one to boot) here.

Justin Roiland’s Latest Series “Solar Opposites” Gets a Teaser

While you’re waiting for new episodes of Rick & Morty, well, actually, while you’re waiting for a lot of stuff to get back to the way they were, it’s nice to know that Rick & Morty co-creator Justin Roiland has a new animated series on the way, Solar Opposites, coming to Hulu.

In fact, Solar Opposites doesn’t seem to be all that far off from Rick & Morty (maybe living in one of the other universes within the Rick & Morty-verse). It follows an alien family trying they best they can to acclimatize to earth, but, of course, dealing with all the sorts of chaos Roiland has founded his entire career on. Intergalactic warfare, zombie outbreaks, a plethora of jauntily named fictional creatures, and plenty of family squabbling are all part of this new show.

See all of that and enjoy the teaser here, then look for the series premiere of Solar Opposites on Hulu, starting May 8th (even though we’ll probably be let out of our houses at that point).

Justin Roiland Sets Claymation Series “Gloop World” Following the Lives of Blobs at Quibi

If there’s anyone in the world to find a way to explore the emotions and complexities of two anthropomorphic blobs to the point where they can make a TV show about it, it would be Rick and Morty’s Justin Roiland.

Called Gloop World, Roiland will indeed delve into the lives of two blobs named Bob Roundy and Funzy. We only have this much info as to what Gloop World will entail, but this whole idea does make us think of that Terryfold song.

Also, count this as another very, very intriguing get for the still yet-to-be-launched Quibi. They only get more and more enticing every other week or so with a new, crazy acquisition to their slate.

It has been so long since the season 3 finale of Rick and Morty, it feels like perhaps we’re in an alternate dimension from October 2017.

However, as far as we can tell, we’re still in dimension C-137 and, thankfully, new episodes of season 4 are just around the corner. In fact, 5 new episodes are coming, starting Sunday, Nov. 10th at 11:30PM on Adult Swim.

Get delicious, very gooey, juicy taste of what’s to come with Rick and Morty’s season 4 trailer here.

Hulu Orders Two Seasons of Extraterrestrial Family Animated Comedy “Solar Opposites” from Rick and Morty’s Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan

Hulu Orders Two Seasons of Extraterrestrial Family Animated Comedy “Solar Opposites” from Rick and Morty’s Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan

When it comes to adult animation with a intergalactic/interdimensional setting, Justin Roiland might just have cornered the market.

This latest series order by Hulu from Roiland and Rick and Morty writer/EP Mike McMahan will follow an alien family taking refuge on Earth from “better planet”. That seems right in their wheelhouse and, as an added bonus, the sweet voice of the hilarious Mary Mack will be behind one of the characters.

Please note that you’ve got around two years before this comes out. Good thing there’s a bunch of Rick and Morty coming up to keep you satisfied in the meantime.

Justin Roiland Says There Will Be No More Big Hiatuses Between Seasons of “Rick and Morty”

Justin Roiland Says There Will Be No More Big Hiatuses Between Seasons of “Rick and Morty”

Since there’s more of a guarantee of Rick and Morty to come along (i.e. Adult Swim ordering more than 70 eps.), the wait time between seasons will be way less.

Hopefully, that will satiate even the most extreme of Rick and Morty fans and perhaps avoid another McDonald’s Szechuan sauce debacle.

Rick And Morty Renewed for 70 Episodes in Long Term Deal Between Dan Harmon, Justin Roiland, and Adult Swim

Just like you shouldn’t really worry about that annoying Avengers: Infinity War cliffhanger, you shouldn’t have worried about the long-awaited renewal of TV’s most popular comedy (a feat made more impressive by the fact that Rick and Morty aired on Adult Swim, a far cry from primetime on a traditional broadcast network).

So, it looks like we’ll be getting enough Rick and Morty to last us through the Trump Administration and whatever other horrors lie ahead in the future. Thank goodness. Now that you know that 70 episodes are guaranteed, you can rest easy (i.e. watch a bunch of other TV) until season 4 and beyond arrive.

Via Omaze, you do a good thing by supporting the organization Planned Parenthood as well as potentially sitting down with Rick and Morty creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland and actually recording season 3 Rick and Morty DVD commentary.

Additionally, if you win, you’ll be flown out to LA and get put up in a 4-star hotel.

In this case, there are only winners here, but act quickly as there is only one day left for this contest.

Rick & Morty Scores Highest Ratings in Adult Swim History and Is Now TV’s #1 Comedy

Rick & Morty Scores Highest Ratings in Adult Swim History and Is Now TV’s #1 Comedy

Finally, something in this godforsaken year is going right.

“Sunday’s Season 3 finale drew a 3.9/821 in adults 18-24 and a 3.2/1521 in adults 18-34 in Live+ same day, and was the most-watched telecast of the day across cable with adults 18-24, 18-34 and 18-49, according to Adult Swim and Nielsen.”

Keep in mind that this is especially impressive given Rick & Morty’s late night time slot that’s on a network that uses a limited time slot on another TV network.

One can only hope that this will be where a tide could possibly turn toward making more quality, original series rather than reboots, revivals, etc.

You’ll get to see how the show could have been drastically different were not for some ingenious retooling by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. Watch it here.

Rick and Morty Song ‘Terryfold’ Actually Made the Billboard Charts

A collaboration of Justin Roiland and Chaos Chaos actually got enough streams and purchased downloads with the sublime and ridiculous song “Terryfold” from a recent episode of Rick and Morty to get #33 on Billboard.

The song itself seems like a cross between Liam Lynch and Tame Impala, but more importantly it shows the reach that Rick and Morty has. Just like Last Week Tonight has been suspected of having a “John Oliver Effect”, Roiland and Harmon might be responsible for a “Rick and Morty Effect” (remember the Szechuan sauce?)

As part of a chat with Vulture, Justin Roiland, Dan Harmon, Ryan Ridley, Spencer Grammer, and Sarah Chalke (AKA cast and creators of Rick and Morty) not only improvised what a few scenes from a crossover of Rick and Morty and SpongeBob Squarepants might be like, but also got some accompanying animation to really bring it to life.

Spoiler alert, the crossover is definitely more Rick and Morty than it is SpongeBob.

Watch and enjoy here before you sit and tune into tonight’s new Rick and Morty at 11PM tonight.

An integral part of the premiere episode of Rick and Morty season 3, as you might know, is McDonalds promotional Szechuan Sauce.

Well, after the livestreaming of the premiere on April Fools’ Day this year, it would seem McDonalds got in on the fun and sent this package to Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland.

We can only imagine what other multinational companies will bend to the will of Rick and Morty season 3.

We shall see as the season premiere is tonight at 11:30PM on Adult Swim.

As you can see, it’ll be a behind the scenes book focusing on not only the art of the celebrated series, but the process of how Rick and Morty is exactly made and details behind their many wondrous characters.

There is no official release date yet, but, if it comes out before or during this year’s holiday season, we’re guessing it’ll be one of the more popular gifts that people will be buying up.
