‘Adele Carpool Karaoke’ Record Is Milestone in New Era of Late Night

February 17, 2016

As of this post, Adele Carpool Karaoke is almost at the 70 million view mark on YouTube, which, according to Deadline, is now the new pinnacle of viral late night clips.

For decades, the format of the late night talk show had pretty much stayed the same with all the trappings of monologues, well tailored suits, desk pieces, celebrity guests, bands.

Now, in the 2010s, the tried and true format of late night is no longer tried and true. Rather than hanging out and hearing the crazy stories of famous people, viewers of late night seem to want to see something crazy actually happen on the show and perhaps only that.

James Corden took over The Late Late Show from Craig Ferguson only last year, relatively unknown in America, and has now scored a viral video that has out performed all the silly games that Jimmy Fallon, the late night leader pretty much from his start at The Tonight Show, plays with A-listers pretty much every night that he tapes an episode.

When Corden inherited The Late Late Show, there was scarcely any online presence for The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson as brief out-of-context interview clips were the only thing that would CBS would bother uploading on to YouTube. There is a reason that Corden went from pretty much zero to 70 million hits in a matter of a months.

The Internet and, more specifically, YouTube and social media, have commodified late night TV into more of a spectacle than it ever was. Remote segments, games, trips outside the studio are all things that are resonating with the current landscape of late night. Adele singing and joking around with James Corden being the most watched late night YouTube clip perfectly illustrates this change.

Such things specifically include Conan O’Brien doing any of his segments out in the wild or going abroad, Jimmy Fallon’s Lip Sync Battle, the pranks that Jimmy Kimmel hatches or his ongoing faux feud with Matt Damon, the deep segments on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver that are uploaded early Monday morning. You’ll note that you’ve probably seen all of these an almost innumerable times on your various social media feeds, both in embedded video and in .gif form.

Sure, Letterman used to throw random things off of a roof and Leno used to find dumb people out on the street who didn’t know what we’d all assume is basic common knowledge for JayWalking. However, in 2016, you don’t have to watch all of The Late Show or The Tonight Show just to get to watch those segments or bits. At any time of the day, you can watch just those specific parts, over and over and over, and nothing else.

With this being the case, many of those aforementioned late night tropes like the opening monologue of topical jokes and desk pieces are slowly fading in relevance in favor of what makes for the most viral sounding headline.

When Conan does entire special episodes where he travels to remote locations, it more resembles something that Anthony Bourdain would do rather than The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.

Last Week Tonight, @midnight, and now, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee all offer something also atypical of what late night has been for so very long by trading chats with celebrities for dozens more topical jokes that aren’t merely delivered while standing on stage without a video package to throw to. Their success is signs of the winds of change at 11PM onwards.

With all of that being said, the old guard late night talk show is, for now, still in tact. Stephen Colbert is, in a surprising turn from The Colbert Report, presenting a very high brow, well executed version of the traditional late night talk show. In fact, Colbert pulls off many feats as a late night talk show host, especially when it comes to who he books and how he interviews or interacts with who he books, that his competition cannot because they’re off focusing on all the things mentioned above. Whether he can ascend to the top of the mountain of late night like his predecessor David Letterman did and stay there has yet to be seen, but Colbert definitely has the brilliance to do so.

Oh yeah, because of Trevor Noah, Larry Wilmore, and Samantha Bee, there is finally more than one late night show right now not hosted by a white guy.

Though they’re inevitably some doubters and skeptics, all these new trends are probably for the best. When it’s easier to watch live TV and stream content on the Internet on the same device (and that’s probably pretty soon), know that late night is only going to get more shaken up.

The final days of Craig Ferguson’s hosting of The Late Late Show over at CBS are coming soon. In anticipation of that, the guests for the final episodes have been teased, which include many of Craig’s favorite guests such as Thomas Lennon, Tim Meadows, Henry Winkler, Rashida Jones, Steve Carell, Lisa Kudrow, Mila Kunis, and more.

For the final send-off, Ferguson will have late night host compatriot Jay Leno as he joins him in late night host retirement.

We hope amidst this cavalcade, one of our favorite guests on The Late Late Show, Stephen Wright will also be stopping by to wish Ferguson bon voyage.

Jay Leno Officially Says He Will Not Be Filling in For Letterman

In case any of you, amidst entertaining yourselves with the idea of who will fill in for David Letterman when he leaves CBS next year, thought that his former rival, Jay Leno, might do the gig, then you are officially mistaken. When asked, Leno shut down any notion that he might take over The Late Show.

That being said, “maybe they’ll do Broadway”?

And That Was The Last Week of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

Here’s a recap of one of the most momentous 5 days in late night over the last week with the official handing off of The Tonight Show from Jay Leno to Jimmy Fallon including what all the competition was up to, even the one joke Conan made about the whole deal.

On Leno’s Final Night of Tonight Show, Kimmel, Conan, Letterman, The Daily Show Go Big

Tonight, Feb. 3rd, 2014 will be the final night of Jay Leno’s Tonight Show after well over a score of years. Of course, it’ll be a big celebration at The Tonight Show with Billy Crystal as the guest.

However, Jimmy Kimmel with cast of Monuments Men including Matt Damon and Bill Murray, Conan with the entire cast of The Walking Dead, David Letterman with Michael Keaton/The Flaming Lips w/Sean Lennon, and The Daily Show with NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio are making the 11PM hour fierce.

We wouldn’t be surprised if everyone has a joke about a Leno leaving in their monologue tonight as well.

Jay Leno on Leaving ‘The Tonight Show’ Twice on 60 Minutes

Jay Leno and his wife Mavis sat down with 60 Minutes recently and chatted about his second departure from The Tonight Show, largely giving his final word about both transitions and that he’s OK with it. He also claims, in regards to what he’ll do post-Tonight Show, that he is done as a late night talk show host.

It’s a fascinating watch at this moment in time where the late night talk show batons are being handed back at NBC.

There aren’t really any stops that Jerry Seinfeld can’t seemingly pull for his web series Comedians in Coffee Getting Coffee, but this trailer for season 3 of the coolest hang out sessions with some of Jerry’s funniest friends might be the best yet.

Patton Oswalt gets to ride in a DeLorean, Howard Stern and Jerry almost look like they’re having an episode of Seinfeld, Tina Fey joins Jerry even though she doesn’t drive, Louis C.K. takes Jerry on his boat, and much much more.

Oh yeah, there are drones for some reason as well.

Yeah, you want to watch this right now.

Cameron Esposito Makes Great Late Night Stand Up Debut in Front of Jay Leno and Craig Ferguson

Amongst the huddles of comedians, there are comparatively very few, especially nowadays, who make it to doing a set on a late night talk show. Even rarer is doing a great set, prompting the host to call them over to the couch and chat.

Much more rare, probably because it has never happened, is that when a comedian is called over to the couch by Craig Ferguson with Jay Leno sitting beside him after they interjected, admittedly like Statler and Waldorf, during a set that was going pretty great, then hear Leno say, “White men are on their way out! Lesbians rule!”

Well, that’s exactly what happened to the wonderful Cameron Esposito last night when making her late night debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and it was pretty damn hilarious and amazing.

Please watch it here now.

The Final Episode of ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’ to Air February 6, 2014

So, as it stands right now, on Feb. 6th next year, Jay Leno will step down from The Tonight Show, then The Tonight Show will move to New York City with its new host Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers will take the reins to Late Night.

While that might seem momentous, don’t forget that The Arsenio Hall Show is coming back, Chris Hardwick is doing a late night talk show of sorts for Comedy Central, USA is developing a late night talk show with Will Ferrell, and Pete Holmes will be following Conan on TBS later this year.

Basically, late night’s going to get a whole lot more exciting really soon.

Jimmy Fallon Won’t Get Brand New Studio For Tonight Show, Which Leaves What Exactly for New Host of Late Night?

It may just be a small detail here, but it’s curious that instead of getting a new set for his transition to The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon is just getting a makeover for his current one.

The replacement for “Late Night with…” has yet to be announced and they won’t be inheriting Fallon’s studio, so maybe, perhaps, whoever it ends up being, they’ll inherit The Tonight Show stage here in LA, which would be no small detail whatsoever.

No Surprises Here, Again, as Source Reports Jimmy Fallon to Take Over Tonight Show

Also, Seth Meyers is close/“being eyed”/etc. to taking over Late Night at NBC. As we’ve said above and before, this isn’t all that surprising. We’ll be curious to see what 11:35PM Fallon is like.

We’re more curious to see the entire landscape of late night, which now includes several cable networks (for Conan, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, Nikki and Sara Live, upcoming Pete Holmes show to follow Conan, and more).

Is It That Surprising That Jimmy Fallon Would Succeed Jay Leno and Seth Meyers Succeed Jimmy Fallon?

March 22, 2013
Uncategorized
fox, jay leno, jimmy fallon, late night, nbc, seth meyers, tonight show

There has been plenty of gossip and rumors over the last few days regarding the transitioning of Jay Leno at The Tonight Show to move to NYC and handing the reins to Late Night host, Jimmy Fallon. Even though the deal hasn’t been officially made, there’s even more speculation with Seth Meyers possibly filling in for Fallon if he indeed goes to 11:30 or Fox wanting Leno.

Again, this is still all based on high ranking NBC sources and not a done deal.

Having The Tonight Show move back to NYC might be a little surprising, but the rest of this seems pretty straightforward and pretty much in line with NBC’s current tone of late night comedy. If the worry is about the younger demographic (i.e. competing with Jimmy Kimmel), why aren’t they trying something a little different, tonally, like IFC or FX?

Jimmy Fallon May Very Well Replace Jay Leno on The Tonight Show

Jimmy Fallon May Very Well Replace Jay Leno on The Tonight Show

This seems like a logical move on NBC’s part, but one can’t help think of all the fiascos of trying to hand off The Tonight Show from Johnny Carson. It is nice to see the new energy that Jimmy Kimmel brings to 11PM on network TV as well as Conan solidifying his place at TBS along with Pete Holmes having his own show right after at midnight.

These are the moves that are making everyone other network that does late night join 2013.

1) Jay Leno’s joke about Casey Anthony didn’t go well until he repeated it the 2nd time. The joke, in structure and delivery, was typical Leno monologue, but dark by his standards, especially given how little time has passed since the Anthony acquittal.  Perhaps, it would have gone better if Gilbert Gottfried had told it.
