Pick of the Day: Pack Theater Reopening (w/TCB Presents) (in LA) 3/5

The Pack Theater, one of LA’s most innovative and boundary pushing comedy theaters, has survived the pandemic, seemingly, more than a few times. Right at the outset, they had a big fundraiser that raised enough money to cover their rent for several months, though we truly didn’t have any idea how long the pandemic would last (especially as it’s still not completely over two years later). In that time, they built one of the most robust offerings of virtual comedy from any venue almost anywhere in the world. All of that has kept them alive enough (even having to temporarily give up their original space in The Complex) through all the variants.

This Saturday, March 5th, The Pack Theater will be finally opening its doors for in-person shows and as a matter of it being a grand reopening, they’re going to have a grand evening curated from every corner of comedy (including with a bit of an assist from us here at TCB.

Right now, the Pack Theater Reopening has a line-up of:

7PM PT-improv from Heather & Miles (one of the all time, best improv duos)
8PM PT-sketch from Joan Ford & Cait Raft (one of the most fun sketch duos in LA)
9PM PT-The Comedy Bureau (that’s us) Presents (w/Girl God, Atsuko Okatsuka, Zavior Phillips, Nori Reed, Percy Rustomji, Malcolm Barrett, Madison Shepard, and host Ayla Glass

Just come around this Saturday, Mar. 5th to 6476 Santa Monica Blvd. to celebrate another comedy institution making it to this side of the pandemic. Get tickets for the evening’s festivities here.

Heather Anne Campbell Sells Warehouse Comedy to Fox

Heather Anne Campbell is one of the most imaginative, fearless, and hysterical minds and voices that we know in comedy.

So, we hope that Fox will not only pick up this project where Heather seems to satirize life in an Amazon-esque warehouse to series, but let her do this show on her terms.

If that happens, we bet that we’ll see something really special.

“How Did This Get Played?” Is Really Worth Listening to No Matter How You Feel About Video Games

Hosts Heather Anne Campbell and Nick Wiger, as a sort of sacrifice for humanity, have subjected themselves to playing the worst video games of all time (many of which that deserve to be buried in sand more than the infamous video game of adaptation of E.T.) to bring you very satisfying hour of dissecting just how truly bad these games are on the new podcast How Did This Get Played?.

Sure, it’s a Sisyphean task for Heather, Nick, producer Matt Apodaca, and a weekly guest, but the anguish that every one of these video games cause is a pretty great bit of dark, existential humor, especially since you can often feel the rancor they have for having to revisiting these beyond-the-bottom-of-the-bargain-bin games. Such titles include Leisure Suit Larry, Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker, Superman 64, and so much more (yeah, there are so many bad video games). You can be a hardcore gamer or barely interested in video games and we’re will to bet that How Did This Get Played? would make for a really good listen.

The name of this podcast, derived from the beloved movie podcast How Did This Get Made?, definitely had a high bar to reach, but most certainly delivers on ripping apart those best/worst video games.

Episodes for How Did This Get Played? drop weekly from Earwolf.

Hebecky Drysbell, the all time champions of UCB’s Cagematch here in LA (78-0), are performing once more in a special one-night-only at the Pack Theater.

Truly, Heather Anne Campbell and Rebecca Drysdale together are one of the funniest comedy duos you’ll ever see, end of discussion.

This special engagement is happening this Saturday, January 19th at 10:30PM at The Pack Theater and, you’re in luck yet again, as admission is pay what you can. Get more details here.

Well, Heather Anne Campbell, probably one of the best improvisers you’ll ever see, is back at the Pack this Saturday!

This time around, she’s doing an entirely improvised film, presumably by herself as it’s called “The One Person Movie”. Whatever it is, we’re sure it’ll be brilliant, dark, and transcendentally funny.

One Person Movie will be happening at The Pack Theater in Hollywood this Saturday, December 15th at 10:30PM. As always with The Pack, admission is pay what you can.

As with all Pack Theater shows, admission is Pay What You can.

Heather Anne Campbell, one of the funniest people around, carefully assembled team of great improvisers who also happen to enjoy anime for The Anime Show.

They will improvise an episode of anime that they have never seen. Sometimes, they are dead on and act out the episode as it actually plays out in the anime series.

In any case, it’s pretty damn fun and, because it’s at The Pack Theater, admission is pay what you can.

This latest edition of The Anime Show will happen on Saturday, October 21st at 10PM.

The inaugural edition of this show was so much damn fun. If you thought that comedians playing very bad video games was a winning formula, you were right on.

Again, Mike Drucker put together another great line-up that will play and riff through some of the worst of the worst in the video game canon.

Tickets are $10, but you can enter to win free tickets via our friends at DoLA.

Jeff Sloniker, Heather Anne Campbell, and AOK have come up with a “hero” of sorts that has probably never been created throughout all the countless pages of comic book lore.

There’s probably good reason for that as the hero is known as “Cellphones For Hands Man”.

That might be breaking some kind of record. Even if it’s not, it’s an impressive feat to take on and he’s doing it for a great cause (collecting donations for the Southern Poverty Law Center) AND will have a great line-up of fellow improvisers joining him throughout throughout the whole run.

All Time UCB Cagematch Champs Hebecky Drysbell Will End Their 78-0 Run Undefeated

Before you get worried about catching Hebecky Drysbell once more, know that they’re getting their own recurring show at UCB here in LA.

For 78 weeks, Heather Anne Campbell and Rebecca Drysdale, otherwise known as Hebecky Drysbell, put on a clinic of long form improv that was consistently brilliant and innovative with a dash of the right bit of mischief. It’s why they made our year end lists.

In that time, beat all of their opponents including the previous Cagematch champion record holding team Heather & Miles that Heather was also a part of.

The UCB Cagematch tonight will feature two new challengers that will face off against each other and a special Cagematch farewell performance from Hebecky Drysbell. It should come as no surprise that tickets to the show are sold out.

Like we said earlier though, you’ll have another chance to see Heather and Rebecca together again as they’ll have a regularly scheduled show at UCB. We’ll be sure to let you know when that gets going.

Like all good art scenes, the LA comedy scene is always growing, changing, and evolving whether it be comedians moving up the ranks, new bookers shaking things up at some of the city’s most established clubs, or groups of like minded folks striking out on their own to do their thing.

The Pack Theater, which just opened up as full time comedy theater, looks to continue that pioneering spirit.

Founded by renowned improviser Miles Stroth, The Pack will have shows 7 nights a week that run the gamut of improv, sketch, stand-up, everything in between, and everything outside of that. There will even be opportunities for classes (taught by the likes of Stroth, Heather Anne Campbell, Eric Moneypenny, and Sam Brown just to a name a few of their faculty that are among the funniest in their comedic discipline) and open mics (that includes sketch open mics and improv jams as well as stand-up) to be inclusive for all levels of performers, an important aspect of existing as new comedy theater in Los Angeles.

For a few months, The Pack has already been putting on pretty swell shows with their aforementioned faculty, solid sketch and improv house teams, and some of the best all around comedians you get to know in LA. It really seems to echo the early, DIY, more rebellious days of UCB and, as you can probably guess, we’re excited to what else they’ve got cooking.

This Saturday, they’ve got a gigantic show to really kick off their opening called PackCon featuring the likes of Bob Odenkirk, Adam McKay, The Whitest Kids U Know, Ian Roberts, Matt Jones (Breaking Bad), Nick Thune, Ron Lynch, Maribeth Monroe (Workaholics), John Gemberling (Broad City), EpicLloyd (Epic Rap Battles of History), John Ennis (Mr. Show), Alison Rich (Party Over Here), Shelly Gossman (SNL), Josh Fadem, Brent Weinbach and way more. From 5PM to midnight or maybe even later, we have no doubt it’ll be a hell of a ride.

The Pack Theater is located in Hollywood at 6470 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles, CA and you can get more info here, follow them on Twitter and Instagram @packtheater or on Facebook.

Best of all, all the shows will be pay-what-you-can for admission.
