Pick of the Day: Root for Farm2Power: Music & Comedy Fundraiser Show (in LA) 7/21

July 3, 2023
News
danielle perez, demi adejuyigbe, ellory smith, glendale, joel kim booster, junior high, los angeles comedy

The winds of change seem to have quite the mean bite to them these days. Whether it be SCOTUS, inflation, mass shootings, etc., it feels like a world that needs more of everyone trying to take care of one another.

One small thing you could do for community (as well as yourself) is going to a very, very special fundraiser music and comedy variety show for South Central Farmers Co-Op‘s Farm2Power. Not only will it be a very fun hip evening of amazing LA-sourced comedy and music at the splendid, all-inclusive arts space, Junior High, but it will be a night supporting a crucial LA org that gives free produce to those in need in the Greater LA area.

Thus far, they’ve got a fantastic line-up including LA comedy luminaries Danielle Perez, Joel Kim Booster, Demi Adejuyigbe, and Ellory Smith as well as sweet sounds from Adjenai, Rosie Tucker, and Amber & Max of Moonchild.

Root for Farm2Power is set for Fri. Jul. 21st with doors at 7PM. Tickets are only $10 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

Pick of the Day: An Hour in 60 Minutes with “Ian” Abramson (in LA) 10/24

October 19, 2022
News
glendale, glendale room, ian abramson, live comedy, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

Ian Abramson started off COVID-19 lockdown by livestreaming his own solo-run version of SNL from the woods. Even that isn’t that the wildest thing that Ian has hilariously done for comedy. He’s worn a shock collar on Conan that he let be operated by an audience member and done post trial interviews for Gary Busey’s Pet Judge. Yep, that’s all real, which is part of the marvel of Ian’s comedy being absurd, brilliant, and flawlessly executed no matter how unbelievable it all might seem when it’s happening.

So, do not miss him or a facsimile played by Ian called “Ian” doing an hour, which stretches, as advertised, 60 minutes at The Glendale Room this coming Monday, Oct. 24th at 9PM. Of all the unforgettable nights of comedy you could get into, this might rank among the most unforgettable.

Tickets are only $4 right now. Go get them ASAP here.

Pick of the Day: Flagship (near LA) Fridays Starting 8/26

August 18, 2022
News
glendale, los angeles comedy, mike bridenstine, stand up comedy, the glendale room

Throughout our tenure covering LA comedy, we’ve seen plenty a weekly comedy show and go and a crucial factor contributing to that is the day of the week that the show chooses. Fridays, in our experience, is one of the hardest to pull off as there are plenty of the big nights at the big comedy clubs, special events, in-town headliners, one-offs, monthlys on top of just the general idea of being at the weekend’s doorstep and folks wanting to just enjoy a drink with friends at their favorite local bar to compete with.

That’s not to say it can’t be done. Faded, of course, has carved out their home on Fridays on Melrose, but there is a new weekly show coming to the Eastside, specifically in Glendale at the what is quickly being known as LA comedy’s coziest room, The Glendale Room. The low key, indie book store feel has provided a wonderfully intimate space for all kinds of comedy, but what will soon be home to Flagship on Fridays at 8PM with host Mike Bridenstine.

Just like all the other weekly shows that Bridenstine has his fingers in on the Eastside, it’ll be a very neatly curated line-up of LA’s finest, amazing visiting comics, and old stalwarts from Bridenstine’s Chicago days.

The very first line-up will feature stand-up from:

Sammy Mowrey
Kiran Deol
Megan Gailey
Max Beasley
River Butcher
Jared Logan

You can (and should) go get tickets here for the nice price of just $10 every week starting next Fri. Aug. 26th.

Pick of the Day: Greg Barris Deep Healing Taping (in LA) 6/11

June 6, 2022
News
album taping, deep healing, glendale, greg barris, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy
Whenever AST Records and Greg Barris are recording something, you need to go. Barris, ever clever, but always-in-tune-with-his-spirtual-side comedian/raconteur is, of course, aiming for something higher than just a new hour of stand-up.
Greg is calling this latest show DEEP HEALING and is considering it an “extreme act of audience participation”, which, for the lack of human connection we all suffered over the last two years, sounds pretty swell. Whatever Greg has up his sleeve for any and all that attend the very intimate taping at The Glendale Room this coming Saturday, June 11th at 8PM PT, we’re sure it will be transformative/leave you in stitches, only the metaphorical kind, at the same time.
Tickets are $15 right now and you better go snag them here (space is limited)

Pick of the Day: The Comedy Co-op Presents Moon Goon (in LA) 3/5

February 24, 2022
News
andrew santiago, Angela Giarratana, Chanse McCrary, glendale, Jasmine Don, Jeremy Culhane, Jill Cepela, Josh Fleury, junior high, Kylie Brakeman, los angeles comedy, Mary Anthony, Mary Lou, Nikki Mckenzie, Patrick McDonald, Paul Heredia, sketch comedy, skyler madsen, the comedy coop

At Feb. 24th, 2022, there’s still no telling what is going to happen with UCB and any sort of in-person return. That said, the beloved performers of the Upright Citizens Brigade, especially the house improv and sketch teams, are still very much around and very much want to take the stage again to perform for those folks that would line-up around the block night after night at any UCB in LA or NYC.

Moon Goon was a heralded Maude sketch team that sported the comedic acumen of many of UCB’s very best including Mary Anthony, Kylie Brakeman, Jill Cepela, Jeremy Culhane, Jasmine Don, Josh Fleury, Angela Giarratana, Paul Heredia, Mary Lou, Skyler Madsen, Chanse McCrary, Patrick McDonald, Nikki Mckenzie, and Andrew Santiago putting up sharply written and daringly performed bits, characters, and more every month pre-pandemic.

Thanks to the Comedy Co-op, Moon Goon is returning again to the stage, this time at the ultra cool, all-inclusive arts/event space Junior High in Glendale on Sat. Mar. 5th at 8PM PT. Tickets are only $12 and the sales go directly to the performers (an important sticking point in The Comedy Co-op‘s mission)

Space is limited, so go get your tickets now before it sells out right here.

Pick of the Day: Great Moments in Comedy Made Worse (in LA) 12/5

November 24, 2021
News
experimental comedy, glendale, great moments in comedy made worse, improv comedy, jeremy schmidt, los angeles comedy, sketch comedy, skyler madsen

There used to be a time when there were anywhere from 3 to 5 shows a night at any of the UCB theaters. Within that slate, some of the coolest, most experimental stuff (i.e. much of the stuff we sought out before lockdown) happened at or after 11PM.

One of those things was the throw-caution-to-the-wind show Great Moments in Comedy Made Worse. Skyler Madsen and Jeremy Schmidt were at the helm of the raucous comedy catalyst that took famous sketches and tacked on 10-15 minutes of improv after the sketch supposedly ended. Also, none of the players knew what sketch they were going to do/improvise off until the very moment they were handed a script. The sort of madcap fun had by all of this show is something we’ve dearly missed for two years and are so thrilled that it has a date lined-up for next week.

In fact, you won’t even have to stay up to midnight to watch it. Presented by The Comedy Co-op, this return of Great Moments in Comedy Made Worse is set for Sun. Dec. 5th at 8PM PT at The Glendale Room. Tickets are only $10 and we highly suggest you get them ASAP because space is limited.

LA’s Getting a Nice, Extremely Cozy New Venue in “The Glendale Room”

October 7, 2021
News
event space, glendale, glendale room, la comedy

It’s no secret that the pandemic has ravaged live comedy in all of its facets. Performers, audiences, people who work in comedy, and, especially, venues. Many clubs and theaters have either closed or haven’t reopened in the last year and a half and a change.

Yet, as a volcano scorches the earth, it enriches the soil leaving fertile ground for something new.

Thus, LA has already opened a whole wave of new comedy and comedy adjacent venues such as Permanent Records Roadhouse and The Comedy Nook and is poised to open even more. The latest addition to the scene will be The Glendale Room located just around the corner from Downtown Glendale.

Sean Casey, who also is a crucial cog in the Westside Comedy Theater in Santa Monica, obtained a shipping container full of so many books and opt to use them as decor for what might instantly be one of LA’s coziest comedy venues. If there were a perfect venue for a live taping of Paul F. Tompkins’ old podcast, Dead Authors, this would be it. It’s set to seat just under 50, but has wiggle room with some creative seating and is looking to be a space for all corners of comedy (and others). Take a bit of gander of the space @theglendaleroom on IG.

If you’d like to see the space for yourself, head onto Glendale (which should be pretty easy if you’re on the Eastside) this Saturday, Oct. 9th at 4PM PT for the “softest” opening (that’ll happen to have free Topo Chico).

Get more details and info at theglendaleroom.com.

The Glendale Room is at 127 Artsakh Ave, Glendale CA 91206.

1) Bill Burr on Letterman.

2) If you follow everything that I write, I spend quite a bit of time defending what comedians say, even if I think it’s hack, bigoted, etc., but somehow has made other people laugh. However, this latest case of an audience member telling a story of date-raping a girl at the show ASSSSCAT during the Del Close Marathon in NY is something that I can’t and won’t intellectually defend even if he was somehow kidding and made the whole thing up. From all accounts, people were cringing, verbally booing, and more in an attempt to get him to stop, which really breaks the main rule that I stand behind, which is “no matter what you talk about, you have to be funny.” Get the full story from Halle Kiefer at Splitsider.

3) On a much lighter note, the line-up for the comedy portion of the FYF Fest, which comprises about .5% of the festival, is FINALLY HERE. Emo Phillips, Marc Maron, and the Sklar Brothers are just a few names…

4) We didn’t even realize that Deadspin had a Comedy Week until yesterday. There’s some fascinating stuff, namely, a tribute to Mitch Hedberg, and a feature on Sean Patton. Thanks to Luke Cunningham for pointing this out.

5) Judges at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival actually picked the Top 10 One-Liners from all the comedians and we think that Matt Kirshen got robbed.

6) The Compatish finds and actually plays The Bachelor: The Game.

7) So, Nikki Glaser has fan t-shirts… (Special thanks to Scott Bowser pictured below)

12) OK, I love this city dearly and inhabitants, often transplants, are resentful of LA not living up to their expectations. It’s an unfortunate circumstance for any metropolis this size and I sincerely wish anyone that whines about being guilted to live here because they felt they had to in order to accomplish something would go back to where they came from. Even with that in mind and making my peace with all the shortcomings of Los Angeles, freeway construction at 1AM at every fucking off-ramp and on-ramp causing bumper to bumper traffic can go fuck itself once we make that possible.

1) Jarrod Harris does stand-up and Girl From Impanema in Vietnamese on Lopez Tonight.

2) Louis C.K. on Letterman promoting the proliferation of the lion population and taking a long deserved shot at the Kansas City Royals.

3) We don’t get screeners here cause well (cough cough)… Anyways, sci-fi action comedy Attack the Block is started its limited theater run at Arclight Hollywood today and by the looks of the trailer and everyone we know and respect saying nothing but great things about it, you should probably, at the very least check it out.

4) Yesterday, Marc Maron gave a heartfelt, inspiring speech about being a comedian that we have posted at least twice already.  Read a transcript of the entire speech at the Comic’s Comic.

“I am the future of show business. Not your show business, my show business. They want me to do this speech because I am the future of our industry.

Then my new manager got back to me and said, “They liked the jokes you did when you introduced Kindler a couple of years ago. That’s why they asked you.”

There’s a reason we’re posting it for at least a third time and maybe more. Cringe Humor even caught a small excerpt on video of the keynote address at Just For Laughs, which in our opinion, should be reprinted several times over like the Gettysburg Address in souvenir stores across America.

5) Please read Patrick Melton’s open letter to Flappers Comedy Club and the comedy industry in general.

6) There will be an Arizona Comedy Festival and they’re currently taking submissions. [via Laughspin.com]

7) Our first piece for the Nerdist: "Why You Probably Haven’t Heard Any Funny Amy Winehouse Jokes”. Already, there’s an amazing comment from eric:

“The formula [comedy = tragedy + time] can be revised thus: (tragedy + time) / context = comedy. Time is inversely related to context–or–the more context you add, the less time between the present and the tragic event is needed in order to be funny. Less context, more time, conversely.”

Think about it. It’s kinda true.

8) TJ Miller interviewed in GQ.
