The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 216: Mike Bridenstine & Comedy Bar Show 101

May 15, 2024
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
comedy shows, los angeles comedy, microdose, mike bridenstine

Over two years, Mike Bridenstine has transformed a very atypical space for comedy, the lovely neighborhood bar that is The Fable in Eagle Rock, CA, into one hell of a destination for a weeknight stand-up show, Microdose, at a bar in Northeast LA. We have Mike return to the TCB Field Report to break down the basics of what it takes to make a field-of-dreams-comedy-show out of a locals’ favorite tavern.

Follow Mike @mikebridenstine and microdose @microdosecomedy on IG. Microdose is every Wednesday at The Fable at 8PM, free admission.

Produced by Jake Kroeger
Music by Brian Granillo

Jam in a Van has been going for a minute in providing a unique outdoor comedy experience in a secret West LA location. On top of a DIY built, outdoor space, your ticket gets you and your party your own cooler of tasty refreshments (as opposed to waiting around to order two drinks).

Several different shows have come through and come through again in their space, but Nick and Andrew’s Hellscape, set for Fri. Jun. 25th, has one hell of a stacked line-up that could very well be a festival line-up if there were any big festivals happening this month. Chelsea Peretti, Ron Funches, Joe Mande, Hannah Einbinder, Atsuko Okatsuka, Kate Berlant, and hosts Nick Thune and Andrew Michaan are splitting an early show 7PM PT and a late show 9:30PM PT (not everyone will play both shows).

You really ought to not miss this show or, really, both shows if you can swing it. Ticket prices are as follows:

Regular Reserved: $35 (plus $2.50 handling fee)
($75 per pair).
VIP Premium seating and a Mr. Heater heater at your seat: $50 (plus $2.50 handling fee) ($105 per pair).

Go get your tickets as space is very limited for Jam in a Van here.

Before the pandemic happened, one of Echo Park’s biggest barbershops, American Barbershop, was home to a handful of really fun comedy shows. During the pandemic, they transitioned to having it outside, but still with a very cool, vintage barber’s chair on stage.

Now, with things opening up again, FresHair Comedy is going strong putting on a very cool comedy show in the heart of Echo Park in LA. They’ve got, for this latest show this month, Dave Merheje, Rell Battle, and Jade Catta-Preta along with esteemed producers Renee Gauthier, Ryan Dalton, and Allison Leber on the line-up and there will be, as we have seen them do in the past, plenty more great LA-based comedians (or ones that just happen to be in town).

This June edition of FresHair is set for Fri. Jun. 25th at 9PM PT and tickets are on sale starting at $15. Go snag them up before they sell out.

Before lockdown, you may have not gotten a chance to catch the madcap variety show that is Stamptown hosted by one of its fearless leader Zach Zucker, but you damn well better not miss your chance this time around. It’s a wild round-up of comedians from every corner of comedy, though it definitely leans in to comedy’s more chaotic, alternative edges.

They’re currently doing recurring shows in both NY and LA, outdoors and indoors, for fully vaccinated audiences. They’ve got a backyard show lined-up for Jun. 15th in NYC as well two indoors shows, Jun. 17th @ Asylum NYC and Jun. 23rd @ Union Hall.

Follow them @stamptown on IG for further updates on shows as they sell out pretty quick.

Line-up for 6/17:
Rosebud Baker
Marcia Belsky
Please Don’t Destroy
Aj Holmes
Steve Girard
Daniel Simonsen
Jordan Temple
& Emily Wilson

Line-up for 6/23:

blair socci, comedy shows, dj demers, jeremiah watkins, los angeles, malibu, outdoors comedy, zainab johnson

Without a doubt, The Ocean Show has the most gorgeous back drop of any live comedy show with the sunset glistening cinematically off of the Pacific Ocean. Also, it’s a very outdoors stand-up show that literally happens on the sands of Malibu’s heavenly Will Rogers State Beach.

There’s so much room to distance and keep to yourself/your bubble while enjoying many of LA’s finest. One of our favorite moments in comedy of all last year actually came at this show when Moses Storm frolicked in the ocean in a suit only to attempt to finish his set while soaking and freezing.

This edition of The Ocean Show is set for this Sun. Jun. 6th with a line-up that includes the Blair Socci, Zainab Johnson, Jeremiah Watkins, and DJ Demers.

“Doors” at 6PM PT and the show at 6:30PM PT and tickets are $20. Please go get them here and make this very worthy trek to the beach.

New Year’s Eve for this year is going to be have to be done at home, virutally, since the pandemic didn’t end by Easter or the Summer or October. While there also won’t be any NYE’s comedy live-streams in person (or there really shouldn’t be in almost every country around the world anyway), there will be a whole bunch of NYE’s comedy live-streams from every corner of the globe. Here’s a nice, convenient list of said comedy live-streams that will feature the likes of anyone from Mike Birbiglia to Reggie Watts to Romesh Ranganathan to Cameron Esposito to Laurie Kilmartin to Myq Kaplan to Judah Friedlander to Sandra Bernhard to so many more.

American Barbershop in Echo Park, in the before times, was home to a handful of delightful live comedy shows in their spacious, stylish interior, complete with a stage under a moose head.

Now, they’re keeping the spirit alive with an outdoor show called Freshair that’s a partnership of longtime LA comedy shows Classic Comedy and Comedians You Should Know LA. It’s outside, out back behind American Barbershop, requires masks and distancing, and we’ll feature stand-up from many of LA’s finest.

This particular edition will feature:

Yassir Lester
Chinedu Unaka
Aaron Weaver
Ryan Dalton
Subhah Agarwal

Dan Ahdoot
Allison Leber
Renee Gauthier

Freshair is set for this Saturday, Nov. 7th at 8PM PT and tickets are going for $15. Enjoy a night out and a nice break from everything this week has been by snagging some tickets here (there are discounts if you buy two or four tickets).

Also, if you’re not down to watch the show in person, they’ll be live-streaming the show as well for only $5.

Pretty, Pretty Pony is and has been, hands down, one of our favorite improv groups amidst the ever-multiplying number of improv teams in and throughout LA. You should always catch their monthly residency where they do improv based off of a monologist’s stories at the Westside Comedy Theater for their high-level, yet subversive long form improv done exquisitely by a cast of Cole Stratton, Joey Greer, Vanessa Ragland, Ed Roe, Atul Singh, Chris Alvarado.

This edition of Pretty, Pretty Pony is especially special as their guest monologist is none other than David X. Cohen who has brought us one of the more fun visions of the future with Futurama. Undoubtedly, his stories of his own past ought to be something pretty special too.

Tickets are only $6 and you can (and should) get them here.

Again, some of the coolest things at UCB these days often happen past your bedtime and this Black Metal themed improv show is just one of those things.

Taking a pun on the massive American shopping day known as “Black Friday”, some of UCB’s best improvisers will be let the darkness of black metal fuel what should be hysterical chaos wrought there on the UCB Franklin stage.

Also, we’re confident this will be much more fun than standing in line for deals on electronics at big box stores.

Black Metal Friday is set for this Friday Nov. 29th at 11:59PM at UCB Franklin and tickets are only $7. Go get ‘em here and get ready to delve into the black metal void (in a long form improv sense) this weekend.

Over 6.5 years, Put Your Hands Together has been a regularly sold out stand-up show, an award winning podcast, and one of the best inclusive spaces for stand-up in LA.

Hosts Cameron Esposito and Rhea Butcher along with the producing team of Ryan McMenamin and Hannah Settle continued to uphold the primetime Tues. night slot for stand-up at UCB Franklin. Before them, Comedy Bang! Bang! had their amazing run in that time slot, then faithfully passed the torch to PYHT.

Announced yesterday, Put Your Hands Together will be ending their wonderful run at the end of this July. Cameron will be hosting on July 9th & 16th (tickets on sale now) and Rhea will be hosting on the 23rd and 30th (follow @pyhtshow to see when they go on sale).
