TCB Debriefing 11/13/23: Best Comedy Album Grammy, Sometimes I Think About Dying, Tom Segura, Call Chelsea Peretti, Rachel Mac

November 13, 2023
News
best comedy album, chelsea peretti, grammys, sometimes i think about dying, tom segura

1. The 2024 Grammys Nominees for Best Comedy Album are:
Trevor Noah: I Wish You Would
Wanda Sykes: I’m An Entertainer
Chris Rock: Selective Outrage
Sarah Silverman: Someone You Love
Dave Chappelle: What’s in a Name?

In case you haven’t done so already, you can disregard the Recording Academy‘s opinion on comedy as this is their most blatant display of a popularity contest (even if there’s huffing and puffing about them getting “cancelled”) in the history of the Best Comedy Album category for The Grammys. Also, note that every one of these “albums” were promoted and consumed as a “special” and they didnt’ even try to pretend to throw some slightly less famous comedian a chance at winning.

2. Sometimes I Think About Dying might be the driest dark comedy in recent memory as well as a well earned pivot from Star Wars for Daisy Ridley and a break out role for the absolutely hysterical Dave Merheje. Take a gander for yourself with the official trailer here.

3. Tom Segura will be on the road all across the world for probably most of 2024 for his Come Together tour. It’s so big that he has only announced the first leg of the tour. Tickets go on sale 10AM local time with code TOMMY at tomsegura.com/TOUR.

4. Damn. Call Chelsea Peretti has returned (i.e. one of the greats, Chelsea Peretti, has also returned). IHeart letting Big Money Players kind of do whatever they want (considering they usually wheel and deal in Top 40) is still kind of unbelieveable. Get into new episodes of Call Chelsea Peretti wherever you get your podcasts now.

5. We’ll leave you with this: Rachel Mac’s Teacher of the Year is more deserving of a Grammy than the rest of that 2024 lot.

Pick of the Day: Nick and Andrew’s Hellscape 6/25

Jam in a Van has been going for a minute in providing a unique outdoor comedy experience in a secret West LA location. On top of a DIY built, outdoor space, your ticket gets you and your party your own cooler of tasty refreshments (as opposed to waiting around to order two drinks).

Several different shows have come through and come through again in their space, but Nick and Andrew’s Hellscape, set for Fri. Jun. 25th, has one hell of a stacked line-up that could very well be a festival line-up if there were any big festivals happening this month. Chelsea Peretti, Ron Funches, Joe Mande, Hannah Einbinder, Atsuko Okatsuka, Kate Berlant, and hosts Nick Thune and Andrew Michaan are splitting an early show 7PM PT and a late show 9:30PM PT (not everyone will play both shows).

You really ought to not miss this show or, really, both shows if you can swing it. Ticket prices are as follows:

Regular Reserved: $35 (plus $2.50 handling fee)
($75 per pair).
VIP Premium seating and a Mr. Heater heater at your seat: $50 (plus $2.50 handling fee) ($105 per pair).

Go get your tickets as space is very limited for Jam in a Van here.

We told you that there would be plenty of big time comedy benefit shows for the Georgia Runoffs and, lordy lordy, there sure are. This latest one is being put up by the one and only Padma Lakshmi that’s very explicit in this regard by being called, “Padma Puts on a Virtual Comedy Show for the Georgia Runoff Elections: An Evening to Benefit FairFight”.

Stacey Abrams’ FairFight was instrumental in registering voters and contributing to Biden’s 2020 Election win and will undoubtedly be crucial in the upcoming special Georgia Senate Runoffs.

So, they tapped Padma for a live benefit show and she, in turn, got one hell of a line-up that includes:

Hasan Minhaj, Phoebe Robinson, Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Peretti, Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon, Benito Skinner, Mike Birbiglia, John Early, Roy Wood Jr., Julio Torres, Michelle Buteau, Patton Oswalt, Aparna Nancherla, Caleb Hearon, Wanda Sykes, Joel Kim Booster, Tituss Burgess, Meg Stalter, Patti Harrison, Nikki Glaser, Ayo Edebiri, Jo Firestone, Amber Ruffin, Dulce Sloan, Naomi Ekperigin, W. Kamau Bell, Mitra Jouhari, Sydnee Washington, Marie Faustin, and Andy Cohen.

There will also be music from King Princess, Perfume Genius, Waxahatchee, Brittany Howard, Local Natives, Aloe Blacc, and Cautious Clay.

Lastly, the evening’s virtual festivities will be hosted by none other than the Las Culturistas themselves, Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang.

Reads like a festival line-up, doesn’t it? Well, we still can’t do that in person right now, but you can enjoy this gigantic Padma Puts on a Virtual Comedy Show comedy live-stream on Thurs. Dec. 17th at 6PM PT/9PM ET at youtube.com/padmalakshmi and donate to FairFight here.

As you may well know, Wisconsin is a major swing state. As such, there are plenty of big fundraisers that are going towards making sure it swings left.

One of them, Laughing All the Way to the White House, will be one of the biggest comedy live-stream fundraisers that we’ve seen yet. Slated for this Tue. Oc.t 20th at 6PM PT/8PM CT/9PM ET, the live-stream will feature the likes of: Sarah Silverman, Sarah Cooper, Seth MacFarlane, Kumail Nanjiani, Mike Birbiglia, Hasan Minhaj, Lewis Black, Bassem Youssef, Chelsea Peretti, Whitney Cummings, Judd Apatow, Roy Wood Jr, Maria Bamford, Harry Shearer, Bradley Whitford, Sklar Brothers, Mandy Patinkin, Ahmed Ahmed, Cristela Alonzo, Greg Proops, Jackie Kashian, Will Forte, Ben Gleib, and more.

Pick of the Day: OHAYO! From Inside a Monster with Atsuko Okatsuka (Live-stream) 8/30

We were so excited to see a TV version of Let’s Go Atsuko: A Woke Japanese Game Show with Atsuko Okatsuka, but it would seem that COVID-19 has put that on hold like it has pretty much everything on this planet.

Fret not as Atsuko has been plenty busy in quarantine. She has kept Let’s Go Atsuko going in a podcast/web cast format AND she has started a new variety show OHAYO! that will have a live-stream debut this weekend via Dynasty Typewriter. It would be just enough to have Okatsuka to helm the show and have a fine round-up of variety acts, but Atsuko has taken it a fun-loving step further by having broadcasting and hosting the show while in the belly of a furry monster. That is the sort of absurdist break from reality we need while we’re are actually stuck in our houses from plenty of real monsters of viruses, systemic oppression, climate change, etc.

This first OHAYO! this Sun. Aug. 30th at 6PM PT/9PM ET will have a damn good line-up of Yassir Lester, Frankie Quinones, Aparna Nancherla, Frankie Quiñones, Chelsea Peretti, and Ever Mainard.

Tickets are only $5 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

In almost any way we can imagine, this ought to be pretty damn fun and support the voices of the future.

If that all sounds swell to you, The Biggest Show is set to take place Wed. Oct. 23rd at 8PM. You can (and should) get tickets starting at $20 here.

Chelsea Peretti to Host 2019 Writers Guild Awards

While The Oscars are still scrambling to find a host, The Writers Guild of America have landed Chelsea Peretti to host their Writers Guild Awards on Feb. 17th.

As you may well know, the Writers Guild Awards are never televised (though clips of the monologues and speeches sometimes find their way online). With that being the case, it’s usually a much more fun affair and a bit more roast-y as well, which will likely suit Chelsea quite nicely.

This will also be the first awards hosting gig for Peretti and pretty much the first big live gig since her recent return to stand-up, which makes us even more intrigued about what she’ll do two months from now.

Chelsea Peretti Will Be in Her First Leading Role in Coming of Middle Age Comedy “Spinster”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans ought to be doubly happy now that Chelsea Peretti’s Gina Linetti get to live on at NBC and that Peretti will be starring as a lead for the first time in the upcoming film Spinster from writer Jennifer Deyell and director Andrea Dorfman.

The film will follow Peretti as a woman who gets broken up with on her 39th birthday and the aftermath follows. Assuredly, we can’t wait to see what Chelsea has up her sleeve in playing such a character.

Also, this news, we’d bet, is probably the beginning of an even higher rising tide of Chelsea Peretti, which hopefully leads to another stand-up special from her in the next year or so.

It’s almost needless to say that this line-up for Let’s Save the Future is pretty massive and this event will undoubtedly sell out.

Also, Action Civics LA, the organization behind this event, sounds pretty great:

Action Civics LA is a non-profit dedicated to empowering inner-city youth to be informed and active citizens and community leaders. Modeled after Mikva Challenge (the successful civic engagement program developed for youth in Chicago), Action Civics LA provides opportunities for young people in Southern California to engage in political action, community problem-solving, and seeks to increase youth voice in local decision-making processes.

Either way, watch it on Netflix here.

Chelsea Peretti got to sit down with Conan this week and revealed that she had encountered an Internet troll face to face, found that you can get the voice of her Brooklyn Nine Nine co-star, Terry Crews, on the Waze app, as well giving Conan and the rest of us a nice crash course in emoji vocabulary.

We’re guessing the underlying issue with that specific Internet troll is that she’s probably upset because she couldn’t get the Terry Crews voice on her Waze.
