TCB Debriefing 11/21/23: Molly Ruben Long, Amy Poehler, Beverly Hills Cop 4, Unprisoned

November 21, 2023
News
amy poehler, axel foley, beverly hills cop, eddie murphy, molly ruben long, unprisoned

1. The hilarious Molly Ruben Long got diagnosed with breast cancer a week ago and then went ahead and hosted a comedy show in a NYC bookstore with these breast cancer jokes. Round of applause right now wherever you are for Molly. Please send her well wishes/support/good vibes/whatever you can.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Molly Ruben-Long (@mollyrubenlong)

2. Following parting ways with Upright Citizens Brigade as a brand, Amy Poehler is now taking her improv talents to Masterclass (for grown-ups not looking to be on SNL?) (Variety)

3. Take your first gander at the nostalgia machine marching on in the first image of Eddie Murphy reprising his iconic Beverly Hills Cop role as Axel Foley.

4. Critically acclaimed (and even with that, not talked about enough?) dramedy Unprisoned is getting another season (Deadline). Kerry Washington has the most fun she’s had in years in a role on top of a fascinating dissection of life post-incarceration.

5. We’ll leave you with this: If you must watch cis straight white men do stand-up, know that there are plenty that are great and aren’t even remotely controversial. Case in point, Joe Zimmerman with one of the best specials of the year.

Amy Poehler & Tina Fey to Go on Four City “Restless Leg Tour”

February 13, 2023
News
amy poehler, comedy tour, tina fey

Come this Spring, Martin Short and Steve Martin won’t be the only beloved comedy duo being prominently featured across the country. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, very likely to be remembered as one of the best hosts of an awards shows, but to be remembered as comedy legends when all is said and done between they’re two storied careers (SNL, UCB, 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Wet Hot American Summer, and on and on and on).

Needless to say, folks will want to see the two together once more and, indeed, that’s what’s happening from Apr. 28th to Jun. 10th in four cities here in the Lower 48. Poehler and Fey will be sharing the stage once more to trade bits, stories, and more of whatever they want on their Restless Leg Tour.

The cities and dates are as follows:

Washington D.C. on 4/28 @ DAR Constitution Hall (Washington D.C.)
5/20 @ The Chicago Theatre
6/9 @ MGM Music Hall at Fenway (Boston)
6/10 @ Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena (Atlantic City)

And, you can (and very much should) go get tickets here on Fri. 10AM (local time to city).

Get the Real Story of the Empire that Lucy & Desi Built with Lucy and Desi (Trailer)

February 14, 2022
News
amy poehler, desi Arnaz, I love Lucy, Lucille ball

Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, and Aaron Sorkin have made a lot of noise with their biopic, Being the Ricardos. That said, no amount of painstaking detail in a biopic that can tell as much truth as in-depth documentary.

That’s why Amy Poehler’s upcoming documentary Lucy and Desi will undoubtedly be required viewing. Poehler will dive into one of Hollywood’s first power couples as well as their production company, Desilu Productions and Lucille having to deal with being labeled as a communist and more. Intimate audio tapes and home movies are spliced in with classic footage of I Love Lucy and the expected abundance of interviews from many comedy folks, both contemporaries and those who she inspired.

Look for Lucy and Desi to drop on Amazon Prime on Mar. 4th. In the meantime, see all of this for yourself in the trailer here.

Netflix Is A Joke Fest Is Back (and Even Bigger?) for 2022

December 6, 2021
News
amy poehler, Ben Schwart, colin quinn, conan o'brien needs a friend, david letterman, jane fonda, jimmy carr, john mulaney, larry david, lily tomlin, los angeles comedy, marc maron, margaret cho, mike birbiglia, mike myers, netflix is a joke, nick kroll, seth rogen, taylor tomlinson, tina fey, wanda sykes

One of the first major comedy festivals to get postponed indefinitely because of COVID-19 was Netflix’s gigantic celebration of comedy that brought out all their biggest stars and their accompanying constellations, Netflix Is a Joke Fest. It was also going to be the first big comedy festival in LA in years (since Riot LA in DTLA ended its run).

For 2020, Netflix seemingly spared no expense to make the biggest comedy festival they could in Los Angeles and it was heartbreaking to see none of that happen in 2020 and have no idea if and when it would happen again.

Well, on this side of the pandemic, Netflix Is a Joke Fest was just announced to be back on, running from Thurs. Apr. 28th-Sun. May 8th, and Netflix is making sure to make it even bigger it would appear. Their stable of venues includes LA’s biggest (which wasn’t planned for 2020) including Dodger Stadium, Staples Center (now known as Crypto.com Arena), The Forum, and The Hollywood Bowl on top of beloved LA comedy haunts, old and new, The Comedy Store, The Hollywood Improv, Dynasty Typewriter, and The Elysian.

The top billing for the line-up is also more robust than we remember. On the schedule, the streamer has David Letterman, Tina Fey/Amy Poehler, Ali Wong, Eddie Izzard, Larry David, Wanda Sykes, Nick Kroll, Seth Rogen’s Table Reads, Marc Maron, Jane Fonda/Lily Tomlin, John Mulaney, Mike Birbiglia, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, Colin Quinn, Mike Myers, Chris Rock, Ilana Glazer, Jimmy Carr, Taylor Tomlinson, Margaret Cho, Ben Schwartz, and Kevin Smith.

Oh yeah, there’s Dave Chappelle too as well as Aziz Ansari who are two of Netflix’s biggest gets within their talent pool, but have had the “cancellation” treatment. We have no doubt that their shows will sell out.

As they are billing it as the “biggest comedy event in history*, *probably” (SF Sketchfest does have way more programming and the Edinburgh Fringe is bigger than most festivals, period.), they’ve also filled out their line-up with plenty of folks (including many of our absolute favorites) that you shouldn’t miss if you’re putting the money down for Netflix Is a Joke Fest. That includes Todd Glass, Melissa Villaseñor, Guy Branum, Natalie Palamides doing Laid, Beth Stelling, James Adomian, Robin Tran, Mae Martin, and Sam Jay.

You can take a gander at the schedule here, then go get tickets starting this Fri. Dec. 10th at NetflixIsAJokeFest.com.

Please Enjoy Amy Poehler and Tina Fey’s Full Opening Monologue from 2021 Golden Globes

News
amy poehler, golden globes, opening monologue, tina fey

Honestly, bandying over the winners of The Golden Globes is a fool’s errand (though it’s nice that an actual comedy got awards in the comedy & or musical category with Borat Subsequent Moviefilm).

The highlight here is awards hosting power duo, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, returning to one of the gigs they were clearly anointed to do, The Golden Globes. Fey and Poehler together balance the right amount of bits, jabs at the HFPA, and asides about the nominees to carry on their celebrated legacy of presiding over the evening’s events.

Interestingly, the very limited in-person audience were all first responders and essential workers, which means you can hear the laughs more clearly and heartily as opposed to it being lost in a sea of celebrities in a gigantic ball room or theater.

Truly, Fey and Poehler should just have a whole special dedicated to hosting awards shows.

Watch and enjoy their 2021 Golden Globes Opening Monologue here.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to Host Golden Globes for 4th Time, Simulcast from LA and NYC

February 2, 2021
News
amy poehler, golden globes, tina fey

(via Variety)

Unlike so many more of the major awards ceremonies, the Golden Globes do not have a very long tradition of hosts and being a big televised to-do like the Primetime Emmys or the Oscars.

That being said, few award hosts have shined quite like the pairing of longtime comedy collaborators Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. Up to 2015, they hosted the Golden Globes three consecutive times and were lauded for their performance, a rarity in the recent years of awards hosting. Of course, each had their own comedy and entertainment empires to tend to and retired from their roles hosting the ceremony.

Now, as COVID-19 has proven that it’s very likely to ruin most of 2021, the Golden Globes will have to be done remotely and virtually and they’re tapping Poehler and Fey once more as hosts to help navigate these uncharted waters. Fey and Poehler won’t even be in the same room for the occasion. Fey will be in NYC and Poehler here in LA, Beverly Hills in particular, co-hosting across the country, simulcast. We have faith that they’ll come up with some great bit about that.

Mostly, in a time where people desire what’s familiar and what they know has brought them comfort, it’s nice to see that Amy and Tina will take up the hosting mantle once more.

The Golden Globes is set to air live on Sun. Feb. 28th at 5PM PT/8PM ET.

Amy Poehler Primes You for Watching NATE

December 3, 2020
News
amy poehler, natalie palamides, nate, netflix, netflix is a joke

So, not all of us were lucky enough to catch Natalie Palamides‘ groundbreaking solo show NATE (read our thoughts on it here) develop in and around LA (mostly at the Lyric Hyperion, sometimes UCB) or catch it’s award winning runs at comedy festivals around the globe. Thankfully, NATE was made into a comedy special for Netflix for all the world to see, bust up laughing, and reckon with.

NATE is very likely unlike any comedy special you’ve ever seen or, if you’re a solo show aficionado, unlike any solo show you’ve seen. The complexities it presents and entangles itself in also get imbued on anyone watching and that’s a major facet of why it will be an artistic work to be remembered, especially in the annals of comedy history.

If you don’t what you’re in for, perhaps let executive producer Amy Poehler try and give you a bit of hint without really giving too much away (at the behest of the star of NATE).

Oh, in case you didn’t know, NATE is streaming now on Netflix.

Natalie Palamides’ “Nate” Special Gets First Teaser

November 23, 2020
News

One of the most groundbreaking, revolutionary shows we’ve ever seen (and we do not throw around such a claim lightly or frequently at all) was Natalie Palamides’ Nate. Her critical acclaimed, award winning solo show had Natalie taking on the role of a toxic masculine guy, Nate, reckoning with his toxic masculinity.

As always with the case with Palamides, it’s a wild journey that really goes deep, pushes boundaries, and is a rare comedy solo show that can genuinely be described as breathtaking (and it was that way for the several times we saw Nate while it was being developed).

Thankfully, Amy Poehler took a liking to Natalie and Nate and brought it to Netflix to be made into special for the world to see and we have no doubt that it will be a lightning rod of a comedy special. We truly cannot wait for it.

You can just a tiny, but very enticing taste of what’s to come with Nate in this teaser here, then look forward it to stream on Netflix on Tues. Dec. 1st.

That’s why there’s a huge benefit live-stream this Friday, Oct. 9th at 7PM PT/10PM ET presented by Sunrise Movement LA to benefit the campaigns of Green New Deal candidates at all levels of government for Los Angeles. ASSSSCAT, the marquee show for the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatres across the country, is returning to do their signature long form improv show via a YouTube live-stream over four different shows this weekend for four separate worthy charities.

No matter where or when ASSSSCAT was happening, it was always sold out back when it happened in person. For this special charity, live-stream edition, you will have to get your chance to see UCB’s best without having worry about buying tickets weeks in advance or standing hours in a line. Also, it’s heartening to see ASSSSCAT is back after the closures of UCB Hell’s Kitchen and the NYC training center.

The teams, as you can see below, makes for a star studded affair. All of the founding UCB 4 (Matt Besser, Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh, and Ian Roberts)  are slated to perform throughout the four shows in addition to Bobby Moynihan, Ego Nwodim, D’Arcy Carden, Lauren Lapkus, Carl Tart, Seth Morris, Andy Daly, Lennon Parham, Jessica St. Clair, Sean Conroy, Eugene Cordero, Anthony Atamanuik, Jon Gabrus, John Gemberling, and so much more.

The four shows happening on Fri. May 1st & Sat. May 2nd will be dedicated to raising funds for Frontline Responders Fund, Project C.U.R.E., NYC Mayor’s Fund: Food For Heroes, and LA COVID-19 Crisis Fund.

By the way, they’re all scheduled out so you’ll be able to watch them all. Tune in May 1st & May 2nd at both 5PM PT/8PM ET & 8PM PT/11PM ET on UCB’s YouTube channel here.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Will Host the 2021 Golden Globes

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Will Host the 2021 Golden Globes

Ever since The Golden Globes started having hosts for their awards ceremonies, it certainly seems like a very Star Wars-ish arc has been taking place over the last several years.

Ricky Gervais invites some chaos every time he hosts The Golden Globes, making it an all out roast on his end. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler then balance that energy out with grace, poise, and endless cleverness to the ceremony and it might just keep going that way (especially considering that Fey and Poehler have already said that they were done hosting The Golden Globes years ago).

In any case, more Tina Fey and Amy Poehler together in this role, as they will be in 2021′s Golden Globes, is a net positive for all.

Natalie Palamides has really pushed herself to new thrilling and hysterical territory with her solo show, NATE. Audiences and critics around the world (including some of the most prestigious comedy and performance festivals) agree in being awestruck with Natalie’s work here where she satirizes masculinity in such a daring way.

Also, one Amy Poehler feels similarly and, as such, will be presenting NATE to the world as a live comedy special that will tape next month, Fri. Aug. 9th, at the Los Angeles Theatre Center in DTLA. There will be two tapings, 7PM and 9:30PM, and you can (and very, very much should) RSVP for FREE tickets here.

“Russian Doll” Trailer Promises a Darker, 2019 Update to Groundhog Day Starring Natasha Lyonne

It took the rare talents of someone like Bill Murray to not only make Groundhog Day work, but be one of the most beloved comedies of all time.

Fortunately, we’re pretty sure that Natasha Lyonne is one of those talents as this trailer for the upcoming Netflix series Russian Doll (coming from Lyonne, Amy Poehler, and Leslye Headland), despite stepping into well worn comedic territory of reliving the same day over-and-over, is pretty enticing pretty much because of her.

See for yourself here, then mark Feb. 1st on your calendar for season 1 to begin streaming.

Adult Swim Orders a Three Busy Debras Pilot

With an assist from Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite production company, Mitra Jouhari, Sandy Honig, and Alyssa Stonoha, otherwise known as the absurdist comedy troupe Three Busy Debras, will be making a pilot for Adult Swim.

You might remember that Three Busy Debras successfully did a Kickstarter in order to play Carnegie Hall, which only makes us wonder what they will do if they get their own TV show. We can only hope that Adult Swim picks up this pilot to series in order to find out.

The UCB 4 to Reunite for Performance at Carnegie Hall, Becoming One of the Few Improv Teams/Troupes to Ever Play The World Renowned Venue

For a very long time, playing NYC’s Carnegie Hall as a comedian was an unquestioned achievement in comedy of the highest order. As is, playing Carnegie Hall is an incredibly rare feat no matter what your artistic discipline might be.

Still, mostly comedians that play Carnegie Hall are stand-up comedians. We looked through the list of past performers, we found that the only other instance of improv was Drew Carey doing night with some Whose Line Is It Anyway? folks like Jeff B. Davis and Greg Proops for the New York Comedy Festival. The Firesign Theatre, which only had an improvised feel, also performed there several decades ago.

So, Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh, Ian Roberts, and Matt Besser, often referred to as The UCB 4, will be kicking off 2018′s Del Close Marathon performing together once again and simultaneously being one of the only groups to do their version of long form improv on such a hallowed stage.

With that in mind, you better keep a close eye on tickets going on sale if you want to go.
