Watch Trailer for “Trollville” Starring Henry Zebrowski as an Internet Troll

December 18, 2018
Uncategorized
henry zebrowski, mini series, natalie jean, seena ghaznavi, trollville, vimeo

Sure we all know and loathe Internet trolls, but the anonymity of the Internet keeps their actual day-to-day lives largely a mystery (though it’s hard to imagine that it’s anything all that desirable).

So, Henry Zebrowski (Last Podcast on the Left, Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell) along with Natalie Jean and Seena Ghaznavi had created a 5 ep. web mini-series called Trollville that imagines the sort of life that someone who spends much of their day obsessing over ruining everyone else’s day online.

From the looks of the trailer, Zebrowski seems to play an Internet troll perfectly.

If you’re digging it, you can buy/rent eps. of Trollville on Vimeo on Demand right now.

Soft Focus with Jena Friedman 2 Gets a Teaser and a Jan. 25th Premiere Date

Jena Friedman made such a fantastic investigative/topical comedy special with Soft Focus that, if we’re to go by the title of the video, Adult Swim opted to give her a sequel(?) with Soft Focus with Jena Friedman 2.

The first go around had Jena really digging into the issue of campus rape and such a darkly funny and subversive way as well as interviewing Gilberto Valle, the man once labeled as the Cannibal Cop, then putting him through a surprise dating game show.

What lies in store for this next one is a bit of mystery, but this teaser sure feels like it’s upping the ante.

Look for the next Soft Focus with Jena Friedman on Friday January 25th at midnight.

If the typical sort of, very, very family friendly holiday spirit doesn’t quite suit you this time of year, may we suggest that you catch a much more adult-themed holiday comedy variety show fronted by Toby Huss as Rudy Casoni (who uncannily sounds like Frank Sinatra) wonderfully called The Rudy Casoni XXXMas Boozebag Revue.

There’s a fantastic line-up, as you can see above, that is sure to keep this evening fun for the grown-ups only.

This year’s Rudy Casoni XXXMas Boozebag Revue will be at Dynasty Typewriter this Wednesday. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at door and you can (and should) get them here.

Aaron Weaver’s Cosmic Joke Might Be the Chillest Comedy Album This Year

Chill, clever, cheeky, thoughtful and, again, very chill, Aaron Weaver is the perfect comedian to get a laugh while stargazing, enjoying a sunset, or any other sort image that’s meditative.

In fact, this debut album Cosmic Joke opens with a very laid back, but delightful guided meditation that sets the tone of easing back on an inner tube on a lazy river. That being said, Weaver’s writing and observations are very slick (and silly) and he uses his stoner-affected delivery and cadence to hide the seams of his well-crafted jokes. All in all, Cosmic Joke is a comedy album that’s probably perfectly paced for these times if you need to need to laugh about the universe in a way that isn’t fueled by existential dread.

So, please get and enjoy Aaron Weaver’s Cosmic Joke here.

Well, Heather Anne Campbell, probably one of the best improvisers you’ll ever see, is back at the Pack this Saturday!

This time around, she’s doing an entirely improvised film, presumably by herself as it’s called “The One Person Movie”. Whatever it is, we’re sure it’ll be brilliant, dark, and transcendentally funny.

One Person Movie will be happening at The Pack Theater in Hollywood this Saturday, December 15th at 10:30PM. As always with The Pack, admission is pay what you can.

‘End of the F—ing World’ Duo Chuck Forsman and Jonathan Entwhistle Will Be Doing Another Dark Coming of Age Comedy Adapted from a Graphic Novel

The TV adaptation of Chuck Forsman’s End of the F**king World by Jonathan Entwhistle delighted Netflix viewers and critics alike at the top of 2017 (not to mention that the title and tone probably resonated with lots of people right after 2016).

So, Entwhistle will get to adapt another one of Forsman’s graphic novels I Am Not Okay With This that seems to be somewhat in the same ballpark: dark coming-of-age comedy, though, this time it’s focused on a girl getting mysterious super powers (possibly reminiscent of UK series The Misfits?).

So, if you’re really digging Entwhistle and Forsman together, you’ll be happy to know that you’re going to get a second season of End of the F**king World and a whole new show (as Netflix ordered 8 episodes) of I Am Not Okay With This.

All star musical improv group Baby Wants Candy is doing their special Hamilton-esque show again where they improvise an entirely Hamilton-style musical of a different famous person than Alexander Hamilton.

It’s pretty damn amazing and, just like the actual Hamilton musical, a must-see experience. The next Shamilton will happen right in between Christmas and New Year’s Eve on Thurs., Dec. 27th at 8:30PM at UCB Sunset.

Tickets are still available for only $7 and you really ought to go get them here.

Sometimes, being lost in translation can be a pretty damn great comedic device. Thus, Japanese improv group Nihongo Dake takes that notion to a whole other level by doing an entire improv show pretty much devoid of a single word of English aptly named No Subtitles.

This Saturday, December 15th at 7PM at UCB Sunset Inner Sanctum, you can get lost, in a fun way, in improv in Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and more! We’ve seen and heard it for ourselves without knowing how to speak most of those languages and it’s pretty swell.

Carol Burnett To Receive First Honorary Golden Globe TV Special Achievement Award Which Will Also Be Named After Her

The very first Carol Burnett Award recognizing special achievement in television will be given to Burnett at the ceremony next year and will bear her name every year thereafter. Hopefully, it’ll encourage those not familiar to not only take a look at the career of the recipients, but take a look back at Carol’s legendary career.

We’re always on board for reminders of how great Carol Burnett was, is, and will probably always be.

Finally, this might be one nod to comedy that The Golden Globes didn’t entirely screw up.

Please Get and Revel in Lizzy Cooperman’s New Album “Organism”

It is our firm belief that one of the marks of great jokes is their ability to be enjoyed repeatedly. Sans surprise, they’re truly something special if they can still be so damn funny even if you can recite it from hearing it so many times.

Lizzy Cooperman is absolutely one of our all time favorites here and we’ve definitely doubled over laughing every time, which must be well over a hundred times at this point, we’ve seen her dissonantly bang away at her keyboard in between her rapid-fire, absurdist, dark, personal, often non-sequitur humor.

So, though we often knew what was coming throughout the whole of Organism, the energy, spirit, and unwavering commitment to be sublimely silly was still so thoroughly delightful to us.

We wholeheartedly agree with Karen Kilgariff in the intro for this album for Lizzy when she says that Lizzy makes her believe in comedy.

So, please go get Lizzy Cooperman’s Organism right here right now and enjoy it again and again and again and again.

The Favourite Scores a Lot of Nominations for 2019 Golden Globes

December 7, 2018
Uncategorized
2019, golden globes, nominations

Despite the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the governing body behind The Golden Globes, continuing to wrongly lump musicals and comedy into the same category (as well as making highly debatable distinctions as to what counts for a comedy such as The Martian), it still remains of one of the major awards leading into the awards season (the actual awards will be presented on Jan. 6th with Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg co-hosting) and thus worth noting.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite, rightfully so in our opinion, got plenty of love in many of the categories including Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz being nominated in the very same category. We also dug Eighth Grade, Isle of Dogs, Old Man and the Gun, and The Good Place getting nominations here. Adam McKay’s politically charged dramedy-biopic of Dick Cheney Vice scored more than a couple of noms, which bodes well for its upcoming Christmas release and definitely peaks our interest a little more.

That being said, we’re willing to bet that one (if not many) of your favorite TV comedies got snubbed.

Last Podcast on the Left Will Be Releasing a Live Special from Their Tour Soon

While Marcus Parks, Ben Kissel, and Henry Zebrowski have gone globetrotting to as many places as they possibly can with their hit comedy-true crime/horror/conspiracy theory/alien podcast Last Podcast on the Left, there are places that they just haven’t gotten to visiting yet.

Also, they are one of the few podcasts that tour that actually do a live show that isn’t a live ep. of the podcast, but rather, a full tilt live stage show. We’ve seen a few and it’s a hell of a good time especially if you want to get in deeper how dark Marcus, Henry and Ben’s senses of humor are.

So, they just taped a show at one stop on their latest tour and will be releasing that as a special very shortly on demand that you can buy just in time for the holiday season. We’d say buy it for yourself and loved ones as Last Podcast on the Left remains as one of our all time favorites.

Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis Movie in the Works at Netflix

While the whole premise of Between Two Ferns is to invert the talk show format so far on its head that it’s essentially an anti-talk-show talk show. That idea along with Zach Galifianakis’ mastery of deadpan made for one of Funny or Die’s most popular ventures over the years.

There is no regular schedule for when one of these will be made and released, which has resulted in a sort of heightening how much their subverting a talk show (even to the point where they’ll have guests that subvert the whole artifice of Between Two Ferns itself).

So, with the prospect of an entire movie via Netflix already under way, we can only imagine that Zach and Scott Aukerman are going to get incredibly meta with this.

Celebrity Deathmatch Reboot Being Developed at MTV Studios with Ice Cube Set To Star

The over-the-top claymation battles between pop culture figures from every arena (entertainment, sports, politics, etc.), for us, was one of MTV’s best forays into comedy ever. It was sad to see it go after its run in the early 2000s.

That being said, it’ll be interesting to see how this series premised on fights-to-the-death-by-celebrities will figure into the TV landscape of 2019 (or whenever this might be picked up to series). MTV Studios is aiming for streaming services and premium networks as a move, we’d suppose, to not have to necessarily cater to censors.

As reboots and revivals are still the order of the day at studios and networks, we guess we can do a whole lot worst than a revival of Celebrity Deathmatch (though it has yet to be officially picked up anywhere). MTV Studios attaching Ice Cube is an interesting choice as well since this might be the first non-family-friendly thing he’s done in a very long time.
