Watch Jenny Zigrino’s Late Night Stand-Up Debut on Conan

As Jenny Zigrino just moved here, she definitely knows how to make an entrance with going on Conan.

She performed quite the set on Conan this week, which also counts as her first stand-up performance on a late night talk show. Just in case you didn’t know, there was still other things going on in the late night realm besides Letterman’s send-off.

Watch Jenny’s set here.

Wes Anderson Designed His Own Cafe ‘Bar Luce’ Located Appropriately In Milan

There are pinball machines that are Wes Anderson themed.

For those in love with the colors, symmetry, and worlds of Wes Anderson’s films will be happy to know that they can now go to a real life version of it at Bar Luce in Milan, Italy (a stylish hub in Italy).

Every inch looks as charming and retro as can be with mint green booth and dark wood accents juxtaposed against elaborate pillar patterned wallpaper. A jukebox with songs that you might only know if you actually own soundtracks from Wes Anderson movies and a Steve Zissou pinball machine make it even more charming somehow.

Get a look at Bar Luce here unless you’re just planning on taking a whirlwind trip to Italy to check it out.

Here’s The Trailer For Fox’s Upcoming Animated Series “Golan The Insatiable”

May 23, 2015

Aubrey Plaza voices a misunderstood goth girl and Rob Riggle voices an ancient demon and the two become friends in Fox’s latest animated series Golan The Insatiable, coming from Fox ADHD.

The casting seems pretty on point here and, though the premise is darker than The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, American Dad, or Family Guy, this trailer shows that Golan could potentially be as goofy and absurd as the rest of the bunch.

We’ll find out if that’s so when Golan The Insatiable premieres on May 31st at 9:30PM on Fox.

Coldplay Does a “Game of Thrones” For Red Nose Day

If there was a Green Day musical, is it so crazy to think that a Game of Thrones musical would happen?

For the big charity event Red Nose Day, Coldplay, the cast of Game of Thrones, and Liam Neeson’s voice all came together for this bit of fun of making a parody musical of Game of Thrones.

Whether this musical ends up being a case of life imitating art or not has yet to be seen, but, for now, you can enjoy this faux-self aware version.

Amy Schumer Developing Her Next Movie, A Mother-Daughter Comedy, With Paul Feig

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

This is just more evidence that 2015 is the year of Amy Schumer.

Inside Amy Schumer is off to on hot start and Trainwreck looks more and more like it will be a big R-rated summer comedy hit.

So, it just stands to reason that Schumer would be throwing more irons in the fire, which now includes a new feature project that she will star in, co-rewrite with her sister Kim Caramele, and is developing with Paul Feig, who is attached to produce.

Details on what the mother daughter comedy will entail plot wise are scarce, but we’d be surprised if it didn’t land in the category of R-rated comedies.

Maybe some echoes of Lost in Translation?

Well, luckily, this teaser for “A Very Murray Christmas” coming to Netflix in December has all of this.

Conan O’Brien Gives His Staff Performance Reviews

With Conan O’Brien personally conducting the performance reviews, how well do you think Associate Producer Jordan Schlansky fared?

Conan donned a pair of intimidating glasses and the title of CEO of Conaco to give his staff a performance review.

As working at Conan isn’t like most jobs, these performance reviews were a little different from the norm (i.e. preparedness to save O’Brien in the event of an emergency). Obviously, O’Brien pays a visit to Jordan Schlansky to see what his worth to Conaco is.

On top of all of that, Andy Richter’s performance review is even more touchy than the rest and also pretty priceless.

Watch it all here.

Mel Brooks To Honor Steve Martin With AFI Life Achievement Award

This awards ceremony will get to air on TBS so we can only hope that there’s an elaborate bit being planned between Brooks and Martin.

For the almost mythologically large career that Steve Martin has had, The American Film Institute is honoring him with a Life Achievement Award. Previous AFI Life Achievement Award winner and fellow comedy legend Mel Brooks will be presenting Martin with the award, which we’ll all get to see on Jun. 13th on TBS.

As of now, Steve has ¾ of an EGOT as well as a Mark Twain Prize and will now be receiving this award. So, he has an EGOMTAFI?

Well, here’s a great example of a prank where rather than a victim, there’s a winner as well as some nice promotion for San Andreas.

What started out as a bit for Screen Junkies during a press junket long ago has turned into not only a friendship between one of their own, Nick Mundy, and The Rock, but has made for one hell of a surprise wedding prank (an actual legally binding wedding FYI) that, for our money, tops all those choreographed proposal videos on YouTube.

Watch it all go hilariously and wonderfully go down here.

Just announced today, your favorite animated complicated former sitcom star horse BoJack Horseman is raring up for a second season this summer.

As series creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg amazingly shifted the tone and arc of the BoJack to something a little more dramatic and introspective in the middle of the first season, we can’t wait to see what he’ll pull off for season 2 as well what happened with that Secretariat movie.

James Corden Pretty Much Dedicates Last Night’s “Late Late Show” To David Letterman

Though James Corden is embarking on a whole summer without David Letterman as a lead-in, he is thankful that he’s gotten to follow Dave at all.

Thus, pretty much the whole of last night’s Late Late Show, which followed The Late Show with David Letterman finale, was in dedication to Dave.

From a duet, kind of, with Sting in front of The Ed Sullivan Theater to Corden’s introduction to Letterman (since they don’t have The Late Show in the UK) to…

…a Top Ten List of Things We Will Miss About David Letterman to…

…a fitting send off involving watermelons and a roof.

Faux Internet-Sourced News Show “Not Exactly News” Coming to MTV2

As MTV is bringing another wave of comedy to their networks, they are doing their version of a comedically bent news show.

Damien Lemon, Matthew Broussard, Dave Ebert, and the Internet’s Julia Kelly will be fabricating news stories off of the randomness of the Internet for MTV2′s latest show Not Exactly News. So, we’re guessing that it’s a cross between @midnight and SNL’s Weekend Update?

Will there be wars between various unlikely animal friends? Will there be a giant hamster eating a giant burrito?

Guess we’ll find out when the show premieres Jun. 17th at 11:30PM.

Conan O’Brien Thanks David Letterman For Saving His Late Night Career and Tells People To Watch Letterman During His Show

Late night talk shows at 12:35AM were not only pioneered by David Letterman, but they were apparently kept afloat by Dave as well.

On last night’s Conan, Conan O’Brien expressed his gratitude to David Letterman in a story of how Late Night With Conan O’Brien turned the corner from a rocky start with the Letterman’s aid.

In an even more touching move, Conan, in the middle of his show, along with Patton Oswalt urged viewers to set their DVRs to record Conan and then switch to The Late Show as soon as it was starting.

Like we briefly mentioned yesterday, Conan O’Brien is now the longest running active host of a late night talk show. we’re glad to have an elder statesman that’s still up to orchestrated chaos reign.

Epix Orders Original Comedy Series “Graves” Starring Nick Nolte As An Ex-President

(via Variety)

Nick Nolte as a guilt-ridden ex-President? You’ve got our attention.

It’s only a matter of time before more and more cable networks opt to go into scripted programming no matter what their branding is or was before.

The latest to join in is Epix as they have just ordered their first original comedy series that follows Nick Nolte as a former President of the United States, 20 years after his administration, trying to make up for snafus he made during his presidency. On top of that, his ex-wife is making a run at President.

The premise itself is incredibly intriguing and Nolte seems perfect for the role. Assuming that this series would premiere sometime next year, it’ll be interesting to see any similarities to Hillary Clinton that they ex-wife might have.

Letterman Does “Top Ten Things I’ve Always Wanted To Say To David Letterman” and Says His Final Goodbye to “The Late Show”

After over a month of tributes and farewells, David Letterman kept his send-off relatively short and sweet.

There was a star-studded Top Ten List of Things I’ve Always Wanted To Say To David Letterman that included Bill Murray, Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Peyton Manning, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Jim Carrey, as well as a special performance of “Everlong” by The Foo Fighters.

There was also a nice opening bit from various Presidents.

Outside of that, Dave respectfully spent much his time delving into nostalgia and thanking all of the folks that have been a part of his show over 30 years.

There was even a “day in the life” montage of what Dave goes through with his staff.

With over 30 years and 6000+ shows logged, it’s amazing that Letterman is still self-deprecating in his final remarks.

Just like that, just a little past midnight last night. The Late Show with David Letterman and an entire era of comedy comes to a close.

You can watch the entire finale here.

Of course, Dave also made sure to send his best wishes to the new guy, Stephen Colbert.

Speaking of which, does anyone have a countdown going for Sept. 8th?

That’s a Milestone, Folks

May 21, 2015
Uncategorized

Tonight, comedy will have changed forever, officially. It’s been changing for awhile, but the change is now definite.

It’s such a bold, overwrought sentiment, but the final episode of The Late Show with David Letterman is a rare singular moment that actually signals an entire changing of the guard, the tides, and alignment in the planets as far as comedy is concerned.

Over the last few years, the modes of distribution, production, and even creation and conception of comedy have been shifting, but there have always been vestiges of decades past still very present in the art form. The late night talk show, multi cam sitcoms, etc. still exist in 2015 in very similar ways to the time when they were first put on TV. There are still stand-up comedy specials just like there were scores of years ago and the variety show might just be back on the upswing.

Yet, comedy in 2015 is so different from even just five years ago.

As of this moment:

NBC has one comedy on its upcoming fall line-up.

The Mindy Project is the last sitcom to get cancelled by a network to be only picked up by an online streaming service.

There are entire festivals dedicated to podcasts.

Multiple current series at Comedy Central have won Peabody Awards.

The most senior late night talk show host will be Conan O’Brien.

Trevor Noah, Larry Wilmore, Saurin Choksi, Grace Parra, and Samantha Bee will comprise the non male caucasian portion of late night hosts.

Louie still defies all conventions of television.

Dramedy is slowly becoming its own genre.

Weird Al Yankovic reached #1 on the entire Billboard charts with “Mandatory Fun”.

Comedy albums get vinyl rereleases now.

Everything can and will be parodied, especially if it’s popular at all.

There are more comedy writers, stand-ups, improvisers, sketch performers, etc. than ever before.

A Richard Pryor biopic might actually get made this time around.

Social media has driven controversy in comedy to highs from both comedians and audiences that it has never seen before.

WTF! w/Marc Maron and Comedy Bang! Bang! found their way from being a podcast to a full fledged television show with multiple seasons.

While there is still a predominance of straight white males in stand-up, the likes of Jen Kirkman, James Adomian, Cameron Esposito, Hari Kondabolu, and more continue to move onwards and upwards.

As shown by Community, The Comeback, and even Full House and Coach, no sitcom is entirely dead.

The Chris Gethard Show made it from public access to cable.

Kickstarter and Indiegogo have crowdfunded numerous web series, comedy tours, movies, and more including millions for projects by Zach Braff, Starburns Industries, Super Troopers, Alan Tudyk/Nathan Fillion.

More and more cable networks have rebranded towards comedy like IFC, FXx and TruTV.

Though Cannes Film Festival is more synonymous with very timely and hard hitting dramas, high concept, socially conscious, and/or foreign comedies do have a place there.

At Cannes, Distributor Alchemy has bought up the U.S. rights to The Lobster, a dystopian futuristic romantic comedy where it’s illegal to be single, starring Colin Farrell, and Italian dramedy Mia Madre co-starring John Turturro.

IFC Films has acquired the U.S. rights to international war comedy “A Perfect Day” which includes the cast of Benicio Del Toro, Tim Robbins, Olga Kurylenko, and more.

Having the stamp of approval of premiering at Cannes, we hope to see all these films theatrically released in the States soon.
