Netflix Lines Up Two Louis C.K. Comedy Specials, One of Which is Debuting in April

Netflix has got specials on deck from Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Amy Schumer, Jerry Seinfeld, and now, Louis C.K. It’s almost like they’re trying do a stand-up comedy equivalent of a planetary alignment.

The first of the two specials that C.K. will be doing is simply called 2017 and was taped in, of all places that you could tape a special right now, Washington D.C. Given Louis being vocal on the POTUS having plenty of parallels to Hitler, there’s an extra layer of intrigue on top of a new C.K. special coming out. “2017″ will start streaming on Netflix on Tuesday, April 4th.

With all these gigantic comedy stars, one has to wonder where Netflix goes from here in regards to comedy specials.

Trepany House and Steve Allen Theater are still standing and shows that you should see are still happening.

One of our favorite shows that happens on their stage is the Tomorrow Show with Ron Lynch’s Hook-Up!, a great spoof of The Dating Game. Valentine’s Day is well past us, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still all make heavily poke fun at love, relationships, and trying to date.

Hook-Up! is happening this Saturday at midnight. Tickets are $8 and you can (and should) get them here or at the door.

Watch Patton Oswalt’s WGA Awards Opening Monologue Where He Handles a Heckling James Woods

Last night’s 2017 Writers Guild Awards opened with host Patton Oswalt and two “special” escorts. Everything seemed to be going according to plan.

Then, after a reference to James Woods in a joke, Woods, who just happened to be sitting up front, engaged in a bit (or a lot more) mischief than your average WGA Awards show attendee.

Strangely, though it didn’t seem planned, nothing seemed to get too out of hand and Oswalt closed strong.

Watch it all here.

If you’re a fan of any cooking show where chefs all have to use a weird ingredient, you’ll dig IFC web series The Filling Is Mutual.

Hosts Jenny Zigrino and Jen Saunderson pick out a single joke from their comedian guests’ acts and then dream up a dish based on said joke. Sometimes, it’s delicious and sometimes, it really embodies the joke as much as a recipe can.

In any case, you should watch The Filling Is Mutual and maybe get hungry for ‘dicks in a komono’ or ‘white devil eggs’.

Last Week Tonight, BoJack Horseman, and, with a renewed jolt from the election and Trump Administration, SNL winning WGA Awards seem to be expected.

However, Atlanta nabbing both honors for both Comedy Series and New Series is a really nice, big win for Donald Glover’s freshman series as well as FX, the rare basic cable network that can run with premium cable networks and streaming services when it comes to prestige programming.

FYI, their show The Americans won an award for Drama too.

Arguably, Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen is one of the best comedy shows in the country, maybe even the world. It has become a staple in both LA and NYC that’s pretty much sold to capacity every week well over a whole decade.

This 12th Anniversary of Hot Tub that’s happening tomorrow is actually sold out, but there will be a small number of tickets available at the door. Both Kurt and Kristen will do some of their classic sketches in addition to the killer line-up that they always have.

This Monday night, February 20th, doors will be open at 7PM at The Virgil (we’re guessing some might be lining up well before that), tickets will be at $8 at the door, and the show will start at 8PM.

Alex Kavutskiy and Ariel Gardner, sometimes known as Alex & Ariel, have made an impressive showing as filmmakers over the years with their off-beat dark comedy short films like Judy and short form series like Kill The Baby.

Now, they’ve confidently stepped into both feature length film arena with On The Rocks. They follow a marriage live up to the film’s title to the nth degree as husband and wife, played by Chase Fein and Nichole Bagby, really do go through everything going wrong that can possibly go wrong. We should add that they’re both far from being without fault.

The pace, accented by a Birdman-esque jazz score, is relentless which adds to the fun, chaotic tailspin that the audience is taken on.

Get a taste of all of that with this trailer.

On The Rocks is now available on iTunes $9.99 and is yet another milestone for what we feel will be a storied career of Alex & Ariel.

The Death of Stalin, The French Graphic Novel That Armando Iannucci’s Latest Movie Is Based on, To Get English Language Translation

The highly anticipated latest film Armando Iannucci following the struggle for power following the death of Stalin was actually based on a French graphic novel of the same name by Fabien Nury and Thierry Robin.

With Iannucci’s name on it, a stellar cast, and North American distribution secured, it would only stand to reason that the source material graphic novel get an English language translation. Titan Comics will be stepping in to publish the translation and will release it later this fall.

It’s not everyday that there’s a graphic novel that’s less about alternate history focusing on Stalin that gets adapted into a movie by the creator of Veep. So, maybe it’ll be worth your time when the English language version comes out several months from now.

Ratings Wise, “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” Continues Ascent and Colbert Now Edging Out Fallon

(via Variety)

Holding the Trump Administration’s feet to the fire is finally taking precedence over non-topical games.

Since her debut on TBS, Samantha Bee has almost tripled her ratings with her weekly show “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee”. Though trailing Fallon and The Tonight Show since taking over The Late Show from David Letterman, Stephen Colbert has taken a slight nightly ratings lead over Jimmy in these recent weeks after Trump’s inauguration and the whirlwind insanity of executive orders, overturned bans, resignations, etc. have dominated the news. Stephen has not wavered in taking Trump to task and didn’t jostle his hair when Trump went on The Late Show.

That being said, The Tonight Show has got a bit edgier recently with having Jo Firestone play Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.

Additionally, there seem to be an uptick in Colbert dropping F-bombs in the opening monologue as an appropriate expression of his feelings about what’s going on in The White House. There might not be a correlation with the new ratings lead, but it’s a shift in tactics from when Stephen used to just make fun of sidestepping explicit language because of being on CBS at 11:35PM.

Going forward, Bee will undoubtedly get more latitude to do even more of what she wants and Colbert might just increase his lead with being a more defiant Colbert. We’re sure that’s the Colbert that will be hosting when The Late Show goes live after the February 28th Trump address to Congress.

Myq Kaplan’ Latest Album “No Kidding” Might Be His Best Hour of Stand-Up Yet

Over the years, we hope you might have been as lucky as we have been in seeing Myq Kaplan evolve as a comedian. His latest album, No Kidding, is, thus far, the pinnacle of that evolution.

Starting from his early years with impressive feats of verbal and linguistic acrobatics, Myq has now worked his way to presenting a very colorful, dazzling tapestry of who he really is a person, comedian, and artist. He has got a big following in the autistic community, defends not having kids, and explores the virtues of certain drugs. That’s just the tip of the ice berg that you get off of No Kidding.  Of course, there are still plenty of threads of top shelf wordplay and clever callbacks that tie that tapestry together.

This might just be, as we mentioned up top, his best hour yet.

No Kidding was just released today off of AST Records (recent Grammy Award winners by the way) and you can get it on iTunes or on CD.

Tomorrow night, Lindsay Ames’ My Diary will gather some of the best people from every corner of comedy and has them share a part of a diary that they kept at some point in their life. This usually includes accompanying pictures that show just how “expressive” they were in writing in their most private correspondence.

John Early, who you probably just saw on The Tonight Show, the voice of one of the new Powerpuff Girls Natalie Palamides, and Baron Vaughn (both on late night and in Grace & Frankie) is just half of this fine line-up.

Tickets are $7 and you can (and should) get them here.

For every Bob Odenkirk late night appearance, it isn’t satisfactory enough to just do a straightforward panel interview.

The co-creator of Mr. Show has to sneak in some mischief in some way, shape, or form and Odenkirk opted for taking the idea of “trading places” and adding a Mr. Show-With Bob & David twist to it while on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
