Comedy Central Quadruples Down on Political/Topical Comedy Front with “The Opposition with Jordan Klepper”, a “Goatface” Sketch Special, Extending “The Jim Jefferies Show” and “The President Show”

Comedy Central announced a bunch of things today, many of which show where the cable network is setting their sails for. The prevailing winds are political and topical satire and, as such, Comedy Central will:

–Have The President Show take over the midnight slot from @midnight on September 28th for an additional 7 episodes
–Position “The Opposition with Jordan Klepper” as the new companion to The Daily Show, starting September 25th, that will specifically satirize the world that folks like Alex Jones see/”artistically express”
–Give an hour long sketch comedy special to Goatface Comedy, a group comprised of Hasan Minhaj (The Daily Show), Asif Ali (Wrecked), Fahim Anwar (There’s No Business Like Show Business), and Aristotle Athiras that satirizes everything from their unique perspectives
–Extend The Jim Jefferies Show for ten more episodes, which will begin on September 19th after a few weeks off.

As Netflix, FX, and HBO continue to dominate in the original scripted comedy and stand-up, Comedy Central is, consequently, putting a lot of their chips down on topical/political comedy and satire.

Hopefully, this will work out for them and all of these shows/specials just like it has for Colbert in being the late night leader as the most politically outspoken big time late night host.

Matt Groening, Creator of The Simpsons, Is Bringing His Next Series, Disenchantment, to Netflix

Netflix scores another huge get and, yet again, ups their comedy brand even higher than it already is.

Disenchantment not only comes in with a big, out-of-the-gate 20 episode order and Matt Groening at the helm, but also will include the voice talents of Abbi Jacobson, Nat Faxon, Eric Andre, John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche (that’s looking at you, Futurama diehards), Tress MacNeille, David Herman, Matt Berry, Jeny Batten, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, and Lucy Montgomery.

The show will “follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.”

Sounds like it’ll fit quite perfectly next to Netflix’s other animated series, BoJack Horseman and F Is For Family.

Look for Disenchantment (the series and not just in general) to start streaming next year.

Joe Mande’s 1st Hour Special “Joe Mande’s Award-Winning Comedy Special” Is Now Streaming

Just for the fact that Joe Mande called his first hour special “Joe Mande’s Award-Winning Comedy Special” should be enough to at least tug at your curiosity to give it a watch.

A la The Secret, Mande not only named this special with the hopes of it winning awards, but also weaved a silly, meta narrative thread through the hour that makes you wonder if Joe can really “moneyball” a comedy special. That includes surprise cameos from Bo Burnham, Blake Griffin, and George Wallace.

Also, the entrepreneurial pitches and Mande’s own personal crisis over free speech are bits that stand alone separate from the “award-winning” framework.

With all of that said, you can now go stream Joe Mande’s Award Winning Comedy Special at Netflix.

In case you didn’t know, Nate Bargatze is one of the Tonight Show’s absolute favorite comedians.

This set is a yet another example of why Nate keeps getting asked back. Also, this is the first time that we can remember that Nate, or really anyone in recent memory for that matter, has opened up with a story of murder on a family friendly late night talk show. Of course, it being Nate, it went pretty swell.

See What Rules The Duplass Brothers Set Up for Themselves While Making “Room 104″

As The Duplass Brothers first Sundance short film that got that attention was shot as lo fi as possible with no crew and in one day, you might know that some of Jay and Mark Duplass’ best work comes out of having restrictions.

With their upcoming HBO anthology series, they have a lot more resources at their disposal, but made sure to stay true to their roots by imposing a handful of rules in making and shooting each episode. Based off how the show looks and feels already, we think this was probably a pretty good call on their part.

See what the rules are here, then look for the series premiere of Room 104 on July 28th.

Sarah Silverman’s Weekly Topical Show “I Love You, America” Premieres on October 12th on Hulu

Sarah Silverman’s Weekly Topical Show “I Love You, America” Premieres on October 12th on Hulu

This is an important date for a few reasons.

One, Sarah Silverman will return to having her own TV show.
Two, talk shows/topical/late night get tipped more in the direction of diversity.
Three, this will be the second recurring topical/talk show (Chelsea on Netflix being the other one) on a major streaming service (unless you want to count Norm MacDonald Live on JASH in as well) with A-list talent attached to host.

These are all important points to keep in mind, but we’re curious to see if Sarah might twist the traditional format of all other talk/topical shows.

The 90s were very modern relative the rest of human history. However, that decade was 20 years ago and so much has changed as technology has evolved at a pace that no other generation has seen before.

The reboot of Rocko’s Modern Life, that’s coming to Nickelodeon next year, pays respect to this notion and, in doing so, makes the name of the show even more impactful.

Often in LA, there are comedy shows that, for a myriad of reasons, happen in non-traditional spaces (salons, vintage stores, teepees). The novelty of the atypical venue adds charm, but only a handful of shows actually lean in to whatever space they’re in.

Full Moon Comedy, hosted by Charlie Bury, Lindsay Adams, and Aaron Weaver,  takes advantage of being in the mystical supply and apothecary, The Green Man Store in North Hollywood. Guided meditations, prescriptions of crystals for comedians based on their sets, and actual folks that are in touch with the magical/spiritual/etc. world all happen at this show.

This latest edition of the show also has a fantastic line-up with Eddie Pepitone, The Sisters Puterbaugh, Renee Gauthier, and a very special ceremony from La Sound Healing.

Best of all, it’s free to attend. Get more details here.
