Chelsea Peretti Will Be in Her First Leading Role in Coming of Middle Age Comedy “Spinster”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans ought to be doubly happy now that Chelsea Peretti’s Gina Linetti get to live on at NBC and that Peretti will be starring as a lead for the first time in the upcoming film Spinster from writer Jennifer Deyell and director Andrea Dorfman.

The film will follow Peretti as a woman who gets broken up with on her 39th birthday and the aftermath follows. Assuredly, we can’t wait to see what Chelsea has up her sleeve in playing such a character.

Also, this news, we’d bet, is probably the beginning of an even higher rising tide of Chelsea Peretti, which hopefully leads to another stand-up special from her in the next year or so.

Adult Swim Orders Another Mr. Neighbor’s House Special

If ever there were a darkest-timeline-doppelganger to a Mr. Rogers type, it’d be Brian Huskey as Mr. Neighbor.

We loved the original Mr. Neighbor’s House special by Huskey, Jason Mantzoukas, and Jesse Falcon that was released two years ago on Adult Swim. We’re sure that Huskey and company will up the ante, but, given the times that we live in, we’re sure it’ll seem slightly less otherworldly than when the first special came out.

In any case, we’ll be looking forward to Mr Neighbor’s next uber-trippy adventure set to premiere on June 24th on Adult Swim.

Last week we shot the hr in LA

June 11 the special will be released as a fundraiser for a rape crisis org

MORE DETAILS SOON”

-@cameronesposito

For a comedy special, this is an incredibly quick turnaround.

However, we have a feeling that this special is one that needs to be watched by any and all ASAP on top of funding an important cause as quickly as it can.

So, it should go without saying that you need to mark June 11th on your calendars.

Amy Schumer Signs Deal To Do Her Own Podcast on Spotify for $1 Million

High profile names doing podcasts continue to be a rising tide for the future of podcasts. If you want to think about the value of podcasts at the current moment, a seven-figure deal for talent is comparable to similar deals made routinely for TV, movies, and music.

Schumer will be doing a podcast that covers her takes on the world in regards to pop culture, politics, and stand up comedy. That could easily be the basis for a topical weekly show that Schumer could have hosted, but doing it in podcast form is much less production intensive and allows Schumer time to do plenty of other projects.

We think that this might be a tipping point for those on the fence about listening to podcasts.

Roseanne Cancelled by ABC Following Roseanne Barr’s Racist Tweet Against Former Obama Aide Valerie Jarrett

Roseanne Cancelled by ABC Following Roseanne Barr’s Racist Tweet Against Former Obama Aide Valerie Jarrett

Well, that was fast.

Despite the revival of Roseanne posting up pleasing numbers for ABC, a racist “joke” tweeted out about Valerie Jarrett, a presidential advisor under Barack Obama, has prompted ABC to cancel their promising reboot of the series.

The incendiary, grotesque tweet, now deleted, reads as follows, “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj” (vj being the initials of Valerie Jarett). Barr quickly apologized for the tweet after all hell broke loose on the Internet and announced she was leaving Twitter, but that wasn’t enough mea culpa for ABC’s taste.

This has to be the swiftest cancellation of a series (this all happened today) in recent memory, especially one that comes from the fallout of one tweet. Such action might just set a new standard and precedent that networks and studios might follow going forward regarding the behavior of their talent, no matter how big or successful.

Free speech, especially as used by comedians on social media, will be a curious case in the immediate future.

Defamation, which there might be an argument for here, is indeed not protected by the First Amendment, but you might want to read up on the legal definition of defamation before you form your opinion on the situation.

Baskets Renewed for 4th Season at FX

“We’re not clowning around, Baskets just got approved for a 4th season. Time to celebrate! #BasketsFX“

-@basketsfx

While sitcoms are being axed left, right, and all around at the big broadcast networks, FX recognizes that their comedy programming (which also includes Atlanta and Better Things) is pretty damn strong and are staying the course.

Oh, this would be a great time to remind you to get into Baskets if you, perchance, haven’t dipped your toe in yet.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Will Be 2018 Recipient of Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

Already, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is one of our most beloved comedic actors just from her roles on Seinfeld and Veep alone and is well deserving of a bust of Mark Twain in this regard. One has to wonder if Seinfeld and Veep alums/cast members will show up and do related bits at the upcoming ceremony.

Also, as far as the Mark Twain Prize is concerned, 2018 will be noted for having Julia Louis-Dreyfus winning and it being the year that Bill Cosby had his Mark Twain Prize stripped from him.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Renewed for Season Three by Amazon Before Season Two Premieres Later This Year

Amazon may not be cranking out shows like competitor Netflix, but it looks like they’ve placed some solid bets with their few shows as Marvelous Mrs. Maisel just won a Peabody Award (and a Golden Globe as well) with only one season having been released/aired.

Also, as Transparent will be coming to having its swan song soon, Amazon conveniently has its next face for its comedy brand ready to go.

Mike Judge Presents: Tales From The Tour Bus Renewed at Cinemax for Second Season, Will Focus on Funk/R&B This Time Around

Enough folks had fun seeing animated tales of some of the wildest acts that country music ever had thanks to Mike Judge’s Tales From The Tour Bus that we will all be treated to second round.

For the second season, as mentioned above, the focus will be on the tall tales of James Brown, George Clinton, etc. If Charlie Murphy’s stories of Rick James and Prince on Chappelle’s Show serve as any indication, there ought to be one heck of a season on the way.

So, however you do, make sure you get Cinemax before season 2 arrives.

R.I.P. Sadiki Fuller

This past weekend, comedian Sadiki Fuller passed away from a massive heart attack. While we only saw Fuller perform a few times around town, he definitely had more to give us all comedically had he not passed away so suddenly. Fuller had come to LA by way San Francisco, growing up in Houston before that and was far along carving out his own path (which started off with being a Golden State Warriors mascot).

In any case, you can read Sadiki’s bio here and watch a few clips of him performing on YouTube.

David Letterman Will Be a Guest on Late Night with Seth Meyers at End of This Month

“It’s Dave’s show and we are just borrowing it.
DAVID LETTERMAN will be our guest on Late Night with @sethmeyers on Wednesday May 23rd!”

-@shoemakermike (LNSM Producer)

Decades ago, David Letterman was host of Late Night on NBC, ostensibly being groomed to take over The Tonight Show. As some of you might now, the gig went to Jay Leno and Dave then switched teams to CBS to host The Late Show only to go head-to-head w/Leno on a nightly basis. Of the late night rivalries, it was probably the biggest one that ever was and will ever be.

That being the case, David Letterman will return to be a guest on Late Night and appearing on NBC, which is a thing that many of us would never happen. David Letterman has only been a guest sparingly on Late Night during his tenure at The Late Show. Specifically, he appeared when a very young and inexperienced Conan O’Brien had just taken over Late Night and once when Fallon when pal Steve Martin was on the show.

With the rivalry with Leno well over and Letterman enjoying his post CBS career doing whatever he wants to do, we can only wonder what the hell Dave will talk about with Seth. Our guess is that they’ll probably start off with the beard.

Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law Is Being Revived at Adult Swim

The original voice cast of Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law is on board and the one and only Stephen Colbert will voice the villain who just happens to be a self-obsessed billionaire President.

With this announcement, you almost wonder why Harvey Birdman, stopped in the first place over ten years ago? If this goes well, we wouldn’t be surprised if Adult Swim brought back some version of Space Ghost: Coast to Coast.

Look for the new Harvey Birdman to premiere in Fall.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine to Live on at NBC

“We got your SIX! #Brooklyn99 is officially coming to NBC!”

-@nbcentertainment

After a seemingly out-of-nowhere cancellation of Brooklyn Nine-Nine over at Fox was met with the force of a very disappointed Internet, NBC took up the mantle (and also brought yet another Mike Schur property back to the peacock) and continuing Brooklyn Nine-Nine for its sixth season on their network.

So, maybe, in the case of TV shows and TV shows only, thoughts and prayers work?

Netflix’s “AJ and the Queen” Will Be a Buddy Road Comedy Starring Ru Paul as a Drag Queen

In this series, Ru Paul and a kid sidekick will be galavanting from one city to let Ru Paul to perform on stage like only Ru Paul can as well as spreading the message of love and acceptance.

Sounds pretty great to us and something that might not have been made were it not for non-traditional TV platforms like Netflix. Looking forward to see what this will sound, look, and feel like whenever the trailer drops.

Fox Cancels Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Last Man on Earth, The Mick

Well, it looks like Fox is pretty much done with high concept single camera sitcoms for awhile (except for Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville).  Brooklyn Nine-Nine made it to five seasons, Last Man on Earth did four, and The Mick only lasted two.

It should be noted that while Last Man on Earth is on its way out, Fox is still looking towards reviving Tim Allen vehicle Last Man Standing. The addition of another multicam sitcom that takes place in a retirement home, The Cool Kids, even further suggests Fox is going all in on older audiences.

Rick And Morty Renewed for 70 Episodes in Long Term Deal Between Dan Harmon, Justin Roiland, and Adult Swim

Just like you shouldn’t really worry about that annoying Avengers: Infinity War cliffhanger, you shouldn’t have worried about the long-awaited renewal of TV’s most popular comedy (a feat made more impressive by the fact that Rick and Morty aired on Adult Swim, a far cry from primetime on a traditional broadcast network).

So, it looks like we’ll be getting enough Rick and Morty to last us through the Trump Administration and whatever other horrors lie ahead in the future. Thank goodness. Now that you know that 70 episodes are guaranteed, you can rest easy (i.e. watch a bunch of other TV) until season 4 and beyond arrive.

Gilda Radner Documentary ‘Love, Gilda’ Will Get Theatrical Release

The documentary about the life of legendary comedian and SNL star Gilda Radner will make a run in theaters later this year thanks to Magnolia Pictures.

Director Lisa D’Apolito used rare personal recordings and journal entries to tell Radner’s story in her own voice. Interviewees includes Michael Radner and SNL alumni Chevy Chase, Lorne Michaels, Alan Zweibel, Laraine Newman and Martin Short. Radner’s writings are read by the likes of Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Cecily Strong and Bill Hader.

As a great doc about Garry Shandling came out earlier this year, uplifting docs about celebrated late comedians might just be a trend for the rest of 2018.

Adult Swim Orders a Three Busy Debras Pilot

With an assist from Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite production company, Mitra Jouhari, Sandy Honig, and Alyssa Stonoha, otherwise known as the absurdist comedy troupe Three Busy Debras, will be making a pilot for Adult Swim.

You might remember that Three Busy Debras successfully did a Kickstarter in order to play Carnegie Hall, which only makes us wonder what they will do if they get their own TV show. We can only hope that Adult Swim picks up this pilot to series in order to find out.

Ali Wong Will Voice Bertie Alongside Tiffany Haddish in the Upcoming Animated Netflix Series “Tuca & Bertie”

Ali Wong as a songbird and Tiffany Haddish as a toucan living together in their thirties in a series created by Lisa Hanawalt, the person responsible for how BoJack Horseman looks?

Well, we were already fully on board and, somehow, we’re even more on board for Tuca & Bertie.

There’s no set premiere date or even estimate of one, but we’ll mark our calendars as soon as that’s announced.

Jim Gaffigan’s Latest Special “Noble Ape” Will Have Limited Theatrical Release and Be Released on All Digital Platforms and On Demand July 13th

Jim Gaffigan’s new hour that’ll go to territory that Jim hasn’t gone before, “the medical crisis that befell his wife and family this year, which almost led to his retirement,” will indeed be available in theaters, digitally, and on demand this July. You can actually pre-order on iTunes and Amazon now if you’d like.

Essentially, it’s an independent wide release, which very few comedians outside of Gaffigan, could and would do.

In any case, a new hour from Gaffigan is coming this Summer and that’s, of course, a lovely thing.

Here’s a trailer for Jim Gaffigan: Noble Ape.

Ten episodes based on one of the 2010s funniest comedies is coming to FX next Spring. Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement are at the helm and setting the TV series adaptation in NYC.

FX’s comedy line-up is already pretty damn strong, but this will somehow, probably, make it better.

Conan O’Brien to Shake Things Up By Planning to Do a Half-Hour Show and Launch Site Where You Can Watch All of Conan O’Brien’s Late Night Catalog

In 2019, Conan O’Brien and his team are going to continue to innovate in late night (as they have often done) by paring the show down to a half hour, probably doing only one celebrity interview and having more bits in the show. Given how Internet driven late night is these days and how bits and sketches are some of the more viral things put out by Team Coco, it’s a smart move and we’ll be excited to see how it pans out in a few months.

Part of the move will allow for development of other projects by Conaco, Conan’s production banner, which is really nice to hear considering Eagleheart was a Conaco production.

On top of all of that, there will soon be one digital home for all the iterations of Conan’s late night career including Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, and, of course, Conan.

Overall, we’re really on board for these changes as they’ll probably result in Conan doing more remote segments, more sketches, and an easier way to binge Norm MacDonald’s appearances on Conan over the decades.

Hulu’s Latest Comedy Series Will Be a Mindy Kaling Version of ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ and a Ramy Youssef Sitcom

In the ongoing battle for supremacy in the streaming service (and, by extension, episodic comedy) Hulu’s latest series have lots of potential.

Hulu is bringing another series from one of their stars Mindy Kaling as well as revive the rom com classic as Four Weddings and a Funeral as a TV show. Seems like a solid bet.

Comedian Ramy Youssef will get a sitcom based on his life as an Egyptian-American Muslim in New Jersey. With Jerrod Carmichael’s Carmichael Showteam banner attached, this undoubtedly will be a slightly new angle in the sitcom-based-on-life-of-a-comedian subgenre.

Can’t wait to see what’s to come with teasers and trailers.

E! Orders a Busy Philipps Talk Show and Stand Up 2 The Streets to Series

E! is really throwing their hat in the ring for comedy with their slate of new series that they just announced.

Busy Philipps will be getting her own late night talk show and the live comedy show “Stand Up 2 The Streets”, a dance battle between comedians, created by Justine Marino and Heidi Heaslet will be adapted into its own series.

Having seen both live in the last year and immensely enjoying it here in LA, you should be highly curious, like we are, to see what these shows will end up being.
