News
bar lubitsch, Dylan Adler, la comedy, sam morrison, weho

There was a time when, somehow, the hysterical Dylan Adler lived with the also hysterical Sam Morrison. Two NYC comedy powerhouses behind the same apartment door: can you imagine?

Well, imagine no more as Sam is coming through LA and reuniting/going through the ringer yet again with his former roommate, now turned beloved LA comedy transplant next month. Along with Joel Kim Booster, Hayden Johnson, Camirin Farmer, Reshma Meister & Sarah Stern, and Sam Oh, Morrison and Adler will show you all of the queer comedy brilliance that was (somehow) contained within a two bedroom apartment.

Delightfully called ROOMIES in Hell, catch Sam and Dylan and co. at Bar Lubitsch on Mon. Mar. 18th at 8PM for the nice price, only right now, of $5. Go get your tix here.

There used to be a very healthy stable of comedy forward storytelling shows in LA and that has yet to come back to the sort of frequency that it had in 2019. So, we’re kinda manifesting that in a storytelling show we’re putting at the ultra-cool gift shop that is New Profanity in WeHo.

Called Other Day Stories, our very own Jake Kroeger will host and present tales from LA’s very best including Nori Reed, Ever Mainard, Will Hines, and Jackie Kashian.

This very first Other Day Stories will happen on Tues. Aug. 30th @ 7:30PM (Doors 7PM) at New Profanity. Tickets are $10 and you really ought to go get them here right now.

Genghis Cohen, the Chinese restaurant with a side room that looked more like a humble chapel than a place for live, very secular comedy and music. It has been a go to place for comedy ever since we started covering the comedy beat in LA. Whether it was Abbey Londer’s stand-up showcase from over a decade ago (she was one of the folks large and in charge at Netflix Is a Joke Fest now) or Greta Titelman and Blair Socci’s weekly Tuesday show or the open mic run by now NYC comedy transplant, Nina Tarr, we found our way to Genghis Cohen someway somehow pretty regularly.

Of course, COVID put a stop of all of that for a long, long time.

Thankfully, they survived and comedy is returning to their delightfully intimate space, this time, with LA comedy staple, Alison Stevenson, and a brand new monthly variety show that will draw from the vast spectrum of comedy performers of all ilks and backgrounds that this city has to offer.

Aptly named, Kvetch., Stevenson will assemble the comedy stylings of Laurie Kilmartin, Nori Reed, Ify Nwadiwe, and Courtney Pauroso, which is one hell of a LA comedy variety. This first show is slated for a week from now Wed. May 18th at 8PM PT and tickets are $8 (plus 1 item min.). Go get your tickets right here right now.

It’s so rare to seem someone great actual headline in LA, much less at The Comedy Store.

So, you really ought to not miss your chance to see the one and only Eric Andre, harbinger of (comedic) chaos, do his latest hour up in The Comedy Store’s Belly Room next Fri., Nov. 15th at 8PM. We’re not sure exactly what’s going to happen, but that is part of the thrill of seeing Eric Andre live these days, especially on this Legalize Everything Tour.

Tickets are only $15 (+ 2 item min.). Go get them before they sell out here.

Not only are Daniel Webb, Jamel Johnson, and Logan Guntzelman three comics that make a damn fine line-up of stand-up comedy with their unique styles of charming rapid fire barbs, silly rants, and wry, dark observations respectively, they’re three comics that are about to tape their EPs.

Also, you’ve got to be sold with that flyer, right?

We highly recommend that you be in attendance to see them lay their comedic stylings down on digital wax at the Hollywood Improv at the end of the month. Tickets are $10/2 item min. Go get ‘em here.

In LA, you’ll have two chances to do so with a recording Having Funlessness with Jen Kirkman on June 25th and then Jen performing an hour of stand-up on July 26th all at the Hollywood Improv.

This might actually be the most prestigious dais they’ve had on a roast with Gandhi, Princess Di, Mr. Rogers, Jesus, Oprah, Martin Luther King Jr., and Pope John Paul II.

The original co-reators and hosts Eddie Furth and Ryan Pigg of the show will be presiding over the evening in the Belly Room of The Comedy Store (so you best get your tickets quick). Do so here.

Once upon a time, Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer used to take the stage together at UCB to do something called Crash Test. It was a live show where Paul and Rob got to do whatever the hell they wanted (i.e. an aggro-version of musical chairs, accidentally talking to celebrity assistants in the crowd, going over Vin Diesel’s real FB page, etc.) in between great stand-ups. Eventually, that led to an entire comedy special that they did on a glass bus.

It has been more than couple of a years since Huebel and Scheer have dove into this wondrous chaos, but that’s all changing as they will be reprising Crash Test again at Largo Thurs. May 30th at 8:30PM. Go get your tickets now as we have no doubt that this will be something special.

The Goddamn Comedy Jam and great comedy specials for Henry Phillips and Laurie Kilmartin all took place near WeHo at an intimate, yet kind-of-spacious theatre called The Lyric (not to be confused with the lovely The Lyric Hyperion Theatre & Cafe in Silverlake).

For bureaucratic red tape reasons, they had to close up shop for awhile, but they just reopened their doors for all sorts of events. We’ll keep you in the loop about our favorites.

For 10 years, every Thursday, Josh Haness and Josh Weinstein have been holding down one of the best stand-up showcases in LA, appropriately called The Josh & Josh Show. Held in the back room of Bar Lubitsch, the nice and tight line-up always made for a damn fine night of stand-up in WeHo.

Unfortunately, The Joshes have decided to end their decade run at Lubitsch next Thursday leaving this Thursday and 11/15 left for you to catch their show (a thing we highly urge you to do, especially since it’s FREE w/no drink minimum or maximum).

Tomorrow, they’ve got a stacked line-up of Joe DeRosa, Kara Klenk, Jared Logan, Kurt Braunohler, Eddie Della Siepe, and Ian Karmel.

The monthly solo character comedy reunion-themed show Reunion is always a fantastic dive into some parallel universe and a great showcase of many of LA’s best characters.

As Halloween is right around the corner, they’ll be doing a special “Hell” edition where people reunite to “remember their death day”. With no irony at all, this sounds like a hell of a good time (pun intended).

Admission is free, but the good folks at Reunion ask for a $5 suggested donation with all proceeds going to Human Rights Campaign.

One of the most legendary “best/worst” movies of all time is Plan 9 From Outer Space.

So, don’t miss a chance to watch the movie in it’s original form at the Old Town Music Hall in El Segundo on Saturday, Sept. 8th at 8:15PM.

Then, a month later, you can (and should) watch Dana Gould do a live reading of the film at Largo with a cast he’s lovingly assembled of some of your favorite comedy folks. That includes: Bobcat Goldthwait, David Koechner, Janet Varney, Laraine Newman, Kevin MacDonald, Matt Braunger, Rob Zabrecky, Ron Lynch, Nate Mooney, Deborah Baker, Jr., Ken Daly, G Charles Wright, and Eban Schletter! This live reading of Plan 9 from Outer Space will be on Thurs., Oct. 11th at 8PM.

Tickets for the screening will be $10 and available at the box office at Old Town Music Hall.

Tickets for the live reading are $35 and can be bought right here right now.

If you can swing it, try and pull off seeing both as an alignment of such events might be as rare as Plan 9 from Outer Space itself.
