Watch Trailer for Alexander Payne’s Futuristic Comedy “Downsizing”

September 12, 2017
Uncategorized
alexander payne, christoph waltz, downsizing, kristen wiig, matt damon, trailer

The last time that Alexander Payne’s name made the headlines, he was the mind behind a movie that was set in Nebraska, done completely in black and white, and was as grounded in reality as you could get.

Now, Payne is doing, arguably, the exact opposite in imagining a futuristic world where shrinking yourself is not only possible, but sold as a better way of living life with his latest work, Downsizing.

The result (and the subsequent questions that arise from it) appears to be undeniably fascinating and filled with plenty of funny set pieces (like an adult dramedy version of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids?).

See for yourself in the trailer here.

Downsizing hits theaters this holiday season.

Trailer for Ruben Östlund’s The Square Shows Chaos Run Amok in the Contemporary Art World

Swedish director Ruben Östlund is one of the rare modern day auteurs that deals often in comedy. 2014′s Force Majeure made Östlund’s presence known as someone who can make a high art comedy film that isn’t covered in pretension.

Östlund’s latest, The Square, nabbed one of cinema’s most revered prizes, The Cannes Palme d’Or, which isn’t an award that ever really goes to any sort of comedic work. Even more impressive, he seems to have made a truly international movie with stars from all over the globe (Claes Bang from Denmark, Dominic West from UK, Elisabeth Moss from the US) without having it seemed forced.

On top of all of that, The Square appears to be a devilishly calculated, comedic dressing down of the art world and the people who run it.

See all of this for yourself in the trailer here.

The Square starts its theatrical release on October 27th.

Greta Gerwig Looks to Have Cooked Up Something Special for Her Writer/Director Debut “Lady Bird”

For years, Greta Gerwig has not only shone in front of the camera as nuanced, complex characters, often in Noam Baumbach movies, but she has worked her way in collaborating behind the camera (she co-penned the fantastic Mistress America).

Now, Gerwig has taken full control of the reins with the coming-of-age dramedy film she wrote and directed, Lady Bird. The notion of being disillusioned with the suburbs, growing up Catholic, parents isn’t anything new, but the trailer shows a special touch from Gerwig (we should add that it’s one that has done well to work with Baumbach so much) along with what looks to be another star performance from Saoirse Ronan.

See for yourself here.

Lady Bird starts rolling into theaters on Friday, November 10th.

There’s a bit of dark, dry humor already in both installments of the John Wick franchise.

Now, if we were to imagine if that the focus shifted from the body count that Wick racks up as the most unstoppable assassin of all time to humor and Arnold Schwarzenegger were that supposed unstoppable assassin (along with some talking head interviews?), you’d get Taran Killam’s assassin comedy Killing Gunther.

See for yourself in the first trailer and enjoy Arnold having fun leaning into being the action star he always was and always will be.

Jerry Before Seinfeld Trailer Reveals That Jerry Seinfeld’s Latest Special Will Be All About His Life Leading Into Becoming a Big Time Comedian

Jerry Seinfeld is a master of observational comedy. He honed it into such a form that it influenced generations of comedians for decades after his appearances on The Tonight Show.

In this vein, you might have noticed that Jerry very rarely gets autobiographical in his stand-up. That’s all about to change with his upcoming Netflix special that’s aptly titled Jerry Before Seinfeld, hinting at life before the landmark sitcom he starred in.

See for yourself how personal Jerry is going to get in the trailer here.

Look for Jerry Before Seinfeld to start streaming Tuesday, September 19th on Netflix.

Season two of Tig Notaro’s One Mississippi incredibly endearing as her real life wife (who is great actress/writer/director/comedian herself) Stephanie Allynne shows up as Tig’s love interest and features an drop-the-mic style moment when Tig gets cornered by some “well meaning” homophobic evangelicals.

See for yourself in the season two trailer here.

This might be a wake-up call to those who haven’t caught any of the series thus far.

Episodes start streaming on Amazon Prime on Friday, September 8th.

After all these years and the success that has come from doing WTF, Marc Maron seems almost at peace with the way things are; the key word being “almost”.

Luckily, that degree of almost being at peace keeps fueling his particular brand of self-deprecating comedy, specifically into this latest hour, Too Real, that will stream on Netflix starting next Tuesday, September 5th.

In general, most romantic comedies that hit your local multiplex are far removed from reality in almost every aspect. Such fantastical notions of how dating, relationships, love, sex, etc. are supposed to work do serve the purpose of escapism, but they don’t really reflect what a love story might work in the real world.

That’s where the documentary Dina from Dan Sickles and Antonio Santini comes in as it’s a documentary following the real life eccentric couple of Dina Buno and Scott Levin falling in love.

See for yourself how sweet real love can still be in the trailer here, then look for its release on October 6th.

BoJack Horseman Season 4 Trailer Has All the Madness of 2016-17, But Seems to Be Searching for Its Titular Character

Well, you can rest assure that the last several months will be very rarely regarded as a “good time”.

That being said, it’s kind of a perfect time for BoJack Horseman, an animated comedy that tangles with the human condition in an imaginary universe where the entire animal kingdom is “fully evolved”.

The trailer for season 4, which is coming soon on Friday, September 8th to Netflix, promises a Mr. Peanutbutter storyline that appears to be paralleling 2016 election, even more outlandish chaos with Todd, and, to top it off, a BoJack Horseman who seems more lost than usual.

Proceed at your own caution as there are some spoilers here.

However, given the title of the show, nothing that Jimmy and Gretchen do to each other should come as a total surprise.

In any case this new official trailer and teaser have us really chomping at the bit for the return of You’re The Worst (which has an hour long season premiere FYI) on Wednesday, September 6th at 10PM on FXx.

For many of you, this is a moment (well, the first in a series of moments related to Nathan For You) you’ve been waiting for.

The trailer for the fourth season of Nathan For You is here and, boy oh boy, does it look to be a doozy. Taking on Uber, going a quest with a Bill Gates impersonator, a check-up on past “clients” in a hour long special, and a “blues smoke detector” are all just a bit of what’s to come in what we’re guessing will be Nathan Fielder’s most ambitious season of his show/socio-cultural comedic art experiment yet.

Season 4 of Nathan For You premieres on Thursday, September 28 and the hour long special “Nathan For You: A Celebration” premieres a week before, on Thursday, September 21st on Comedy Central.

Not in recent memory can we remember revenge looking like such fun as Danny McBride’s foolishly headstrong Neal Gamby is hellbent on revenge in the second and conclusive season to Vice Principals on HBO with the “help” of Walton Goggins’ Lee Russell.

The result, according to this official season 2 trailer, has Gamby attempting to be a True-Detective-Taxi-Driver (Gamby is definitely taking cues from Bickle’s playbook in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver) type, but doing so as only McBride can.

Season 2 of Vice Principals premieres on HBO on Sunday, September 17th.

Before hitting stateside, White Gold, the 80s period British comedy that follows the foibles of window salesman, specifically selling the molding (or “double glazing” if you’re from across the pond) on your windows, has already been picked up for a second season at BBC Two.

Thankfully, us Yanks will be able to see this first season starting Thursday, August 17th on Netflix. In case you didn’t know, White Gold comes from Damon Beesley who created The Inbetweeners and you might recognize Ed Westwick’s devilish good looks from Gossip Girl.

Here are two promos that will give you a sense of a more stylish and, perhaps, edgier take on a workplace comedy that you might want to binge this coming weekend.

Armando Iannucci, the singular mind behind In The Loop, The Thick of It, and Veep, has been hard at work with his latest offering, The Death of Stalin. Basically, Iannucci brings his special brand of rapid fire dark political comedy to the events and subsequent power vacuum following the sudden death of infamous Russian dictator Joseph Stalin.

Suffice it to say.that it looks glorious.

The trailer, just released today, promises something quite extraordinary with a fantastic cast that includes Jeffrey Tambor, Steve Buscemi, Michael Palin, Paddy Considine, Jason Isaacs, and more as power hungry Russian higher-ups bickering Iannucci style.

See for yourself in the trailer here.

The Death of Stalin is slated for a UK release on Oct. 20th. Keep a close for a U.S. release date.

Much of Netflix’s success can be attributed to series like true crime docu-series Making a Murderer and The Keepers.

That being the case, Netflix want to take parodies of their hit series into their own hands. Thus, Tony Yacenda (Pillow Talking), Dan Perrault (Honest Trailers, one of the Internet’s best parody series), and Dan Lagana (from the highly underrated Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous) made this new mockumentary series, American Vandal.

Think of it as a bit of a cross between Making a Murderer and Superbad.

In 2017, you’re hopefully aware of the issues of cultural appropriation and diverse representation on screen.

Apu, the long running Simpsons character, is a flashpoint for such issues as he is voiced by a non-Indian actor, Hank Azaria, in a way that many Indians find offensive and belittling, especially given how revered The Simpsons is a TV show.

So, Hari Kondabolu felt he needed to make a documentary focusing on this very subject. Thus, The Problem With Apu was made.

The trailer definitely makes you rethink how you watch The Simpsons if you weren’t already.

Look for the documentary to air on TruTV this fall.

First came the cult best/worst movie The Room from Tommy Wiseau. Then, came the book about the making of The Room called The Disaster Artist by Greg Sestero. With so many different facets to the myth of both Wiseau and The Room, the making of feature film adaptation of why any of this happened seemed inevitable.

Now, that time is here as James Franco’s movie based on The Disaster Artist is set for a theatrical release on December 1st.

Franco, as it would appear, seems to do a pretty good job as Wiseau.

See for yourself in the trailer (and also enjoy a supporting cast of Seth Rogen, Dave Franco, Paul Scheer, and Charlyne Yi).

If, a decade ago, you could place money on whether a TV series called Episodes would last more than one season on a premium cable network, much less for five, we’d guess that you wouldn’t make that bet.

However, Matt LeBlanc has found more than solid footing in a post-Friends world with such a show.

The sheer ingenuity and creativity that comes out of using cardboard in this movie might be a reason enough to see this movie.

Also, Bill Watterson and Steven Sears’ Dave Made a Maze seems like a pretty fun action adventure comedy that isn’t necessarily meant for kids or families with some of your indie comedy heavyweights Nick Thune, James Urbaniak, Stephanie Allynne, and Scott Krinsky.

Viceland’s newest scripted comedy takes a stab at satirizing the world of DJs in specific reference to DJ mogul Diplo.

The trailer shows James Van Der Beek as Diplo, which is an intriguing new direction for Van Der Beek, as well as a crew surrounding him that includes Bobby Lee.

While we’re feeling that there are bits of Entourage and Popstar, there seems to be a bit of self-awareness as well as sense of silly abandon that you’d get on the American version of The Office as well.

See for yourself here, then look for the series premiere on Thursday, August 3rd at Viceland.
