Rejoice in Your First Look at Season 4 of What We Do in the Shadows and Its Pickup of Seasons 5 & 6

June 6, 2022
News
fx, renewed, season 4, what we do in the shadows

What We Do In The Shadows remains one of the funniest comedies on television, especially for how much it was glorious salve during the thick of quarantine. Its lack of awards recognition is a great reflection on how much politicking goes on during awards season (it kind of should be winning everything, FYI).

Thankfully, there’s a chance for all that to change as FX in a very shrewd, wise move opted to pick up What We Do In The Shadows for seasons 5 and 6. Given how imaginative the entire writing staff has gotten with the first three seasons while also managing to both grow Guillermo, Nadia, Colin Robinson, Nandor, and Laszlo and keep the integrity and humor of the series intact, we have full faith in them not hitting a slump.

You can see that season 4, due to premiere on Jul. 12th on FX and Hulu after that, is already going to be a hoot with baby Colin Robinson with the first official teaser here.

Last Week Tonight Gets Renewed Through 2023

September 14, 2020
News
hbo, john oliver, last week tonight, renewed

The 2020 election is just a couple of handfuls of weeks away and the insanity of it, on top of the general insanity of our times, is undeniable. So, having something like Last Week Tonight with John Oliver to give a more nuanced, satirical take on things (though staying clear of any sort of satire paradox with Oliver’s very clear stance on issues) is pretty important.

While we did sadly lose Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj this year, 2020 is seeing a re-upping of Last Week Tonight for three seasons and keep Oliver deep diving into all sorts of topics (that will hopefully be less dark after Nov. 3rd?) all the way through 2023. No matter what happens, John Oliver will continue to be an important part of the late night, political comedy eco-system and have an effect on popular discourse as many people’s entry point into thinking about niche issues come from his particular coverage of them.

Currently, Last Week Tonight is on hiatus, but will be back in full force for October and undoubtedly will be hot on the election trail and whatever absurdity 2020 violently throws at us (as a result of a system that was not checked enough bringing us to where we are now).

.@HBO renews Emmy-winner @lastweektonight with @iamjohnoliver for three more seasons. The deal will keep the hit show on the network through 2023: https://t.co/l0XDu16dEb pic.twitter.com/ZrigE5hkpy

Ramy Renewed for Season 3 at Hulu

July 10, 2020
News
hulu, ramy, ramy youssef, renewed, season 3

Over the past year, Hulu has done quite a bit to establish itself as a contender in the ever more saturated world of prestige TV. The Peabody and Golden Globe Award winning Ramy is one of the series that has raised the profile of their comedy programming slate to get into the conversation that HBO, Netflix, FX, and Amazon usually dominate.

Ramy Youssef has really given everyone a wholly unique look into the life of being a young Muslim in the 21st century in America and the multitude of nuance in, out, and around his world in the past two seasons.

So, with all of that in mind, Hulu is doing the sensible thing and ordering up a third season of Ramy. We do think that Youssef’s penchant for taking stories to unusual, sometimes uncomfortable places will probably result in doing an episode or some episodes about COVID-19 and we have no doubt that, if he does, it’ll very likely be something revelatory.

What We Do In The Shadows Renewed for Season 3 at FX

May 22, 2020
News
fx, renewed, season 3, what we do in the shadows

It has been decided. The vampires that rule over a block of two of Staten Island in What We Do In the Shadows on FX are beloved so much that they’re going to get a third season. Currently, they’re in the middle of a fantastic second season filled with so much exquisitely dark silliness.

Thus far, this might be one of the best movie-to-TV series adaptations in recent memory (maybe even further back) as the FX series has faithfully maintained the spirit of the original Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement movie and being able to stand on its own.

In any case, if you need a reason to continue to make it through these times, a third season of What We Do in The Shadows is a pretty damn good one (especially if they get to the origin story of Colin Robinson, energy vampire).

They have risen…and been renewed for Season 3 of #ShadowsFX. pic.twitter.com/ec5I8VeuEH

Insecure Renewed for Season 5 at HBO

May 1, 2020
News
hbo, insecure, issa rae, renewed

One of the best comedies on TV going right now is, without a doubt, Insecure. Issa Rae really has made something that stands out of the pack amidst a whole pack of prestige comedies at HBO (not to mention that it’s a series that continually shows off our fair city of Los Angeles in a truly wondrous light in a manner not necessarily shown all the time). Insecure has proven that it’s full of surprises and has so much depth in exploring any cultural divides and intersections while continually reinventing itself even in its fourth season. Also, it’s probably the sexiest comedy on TV as well.

So, we’re pretty thrilled to hear that it’s getting a fifth season over at HBO. We are definitely curious to see if Issa and company are going to touch on the pandemic with the new season as this is one of the first series renewals to be ordered while in quarantine.

‘Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens’ Renewed For Season 2 at Comedy Central Before Premiere

‘Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens’ Renewed For Season 2 at Comedy Central Before Premiere

Comedy Central is doubling down on its latest series a week before it even premieres on the network. Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens is getting a 2nd season and the first season has yet to premiere (series premiere is set for Jan. 22nd).

Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens already has a lot going for it with the titular Awkwafina coming off a pretty great 2019, especially with all the accolades she garnered for The Farewell. It’s obvious that the network is looking for its next critical/commercial hit and we’ll just all have to wait and see if that will be the case for Comedy Central’s latest scripted series.

Certainly, the trailer shows promise, especially if you’ve been following Awkwafina since her exclusive rap days.

The freshest show in late night, Desus & Mero (truly, no one is doing it up in late night like Desus Nice and The Kid Mero), will be back for a second season at Showtime come this February (Mon. Feb. 3rd to be more specific).

Congrats to them and we can’t wait to see what they try to get away with a whole other season ahead of them.

Danny McBride’s ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Renewed for Season 2 at HBO

Danny McBride’s ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Renewed for Season 2 at HBO

It’s almost unsurprising how good Danny McBride’s The Righteous Gemstones is (and we’re only a few episodes in). McBride’s consistency up for dark comedy excellence with Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals is held up by this examination of a televangelist family coming apart fast at the seams.

So, it’s almost expected that The Righteous Gemstones would get a second season over at HBO. We can’t wait to see what McBride and co. do with this second season, especially if you’ve heard all the directions that he has gone with this first season on his ep. of The Good One Podcast.

“Joe Pera Talks With You” Gets a Season Two at Adult Swim, Coming This Holiday Season

Hands down, this is one of the most important series renewals, as far as we’re concerned, this year.

The quiet, yet subversive of humor of Joe Pera got to be fully realized in its own TV universe in the quasi-docu-faux-reality series Joe Pera Talks With You on Adult Swim. It’s brilliant, calming, and so damn funny.

Now, it’s get a season two that will come just in time for the holidays.

Here’s details from Joe himself:

Big news I can finally share – season two of
‘Joe Pera Talks With You’ will be coming out this holiday season on @adultswim.

There are 14 new episodes, each with new topics, and I will let you speculate whether this fire hydrant will be introduced as a new major character.

Now, that this is the case. We don’t mind if people start the holiday season early.

South Side Renewed for Second Season at Comedy Central

Today, both A Black Lady Sketch Show and South Side got renewed for a second season, which gives us a lot of hope for scripted comedy on TV and it genuinely looking more diverse, both in appearance and style.

Also, congrats to Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin for creating South Side and bringing something delightfully offbeat, distinct, and probably what Comedy Central needed right about now.

‘Drunk History’ Gets a Season 7 and Comedy Central Signs First Look Deal with Co-Creator Derek Waters

Quietly, Drunk History has now become one of Comedy Central’s longest running series. Starting out as a full-fledged TV series in 2013, Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner’s hybrid unscripted-sketch-variety series has now run so long that it’s on its way to the upper echelons of Comedy Central’s long running programming alongside the likes of Dr. Katz and the early seasons of MST3K.

Of course, Waters’ brilliant edutainment (that has spawned countless “inspired shows” or straight rip-offs) definitely deserves to go as long as Waters and Konner want to keep it going. Also, Comedy Central’s smart to keep Derek Waters around to see what else his delightful brain might want to develop.

Atlanta’s Getting a Fourth Season at FX

With the amount of ground that Donald Glover, Hiro Murai, and more have broken with three seasons of Atlanta, one has to wonder what is next for the critically acclaimed, genre/form defying Atlanta.

The possibilities for the series seem boundless, which is a thing that we’re glad for Glover to have, and, with its constant knack for reinvention, that it could just keep going if it chose to do so.

In any case, round of applause for a fourth season of Atlanta and keep a close eye out for a teaser.

Big Mouth To Get 3 More Seasons at Netflix

BIG MOUTH HAS BEEN PICKED UP FOR 3 MORE SEASONS!!! Thank you to our writers, cast, crew, Netflix and everyone around the world who watches the show!

–@nickkroll

Announced today, the ultra honest, magical realism of Big Mouth will get to live on for quite some more time at Netflix. We’re looking forward to whatever Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett have up their sleeve, but we do wonder how far they’ll let all the characters (and their corresponding monsters) grow up.

Also, we’re sure Kroll will dazzle us all by voicing a dozen more characters at least.

‘Los Espookys’ Renewed For Season 2 By HBO

Though one highly imaginative comedy got cancelled today probably before it should have (Tuca & Bertie), another one, Los Espookys, got another season to live.

Fred Armisen, Julio Torres, and Ana Fabrega came up with some wildly different that we can only intensely wonder what they’ll shoot for in season two. In the meantime, dip your toe into the weird and cheeky waters of the first season Los Espookys.

Considering that I Think You Should Leave has, far and away, some of the best sketches this year (and maybe in recent memory), this renewal should have come several weeks ago, you know, a day or two after the show premiered.

Still, that means more delicious, absurdist morsels from the beautifully bizarre mind of Tim Robinson and co. are coming our way. Thank goodness.

FX Orders Second Season of “What We Do In The Shadows”

Looks like FX is going to keep their comedy programming at its consistently high level with another season of the TV adaptation of What We Do In The Shadows.

Even thinking of what Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement will do with the sandbox of a second season of vampires trying to get by is pretty great. It’ll be thankfully come some time next year (a welcome respite for what’s sure to be another nasty election cycle).

Barry Getting A Third Season at HBO

If the darker path that has been suggested that Barry takes in this second season proves true, we can thankfully ponder at whatever very gut-wrenching cliffhanger that this hitman-turned-aspiring-actor dramedy will leave us with this time and how the hell Barry will get out of it.

Well, he’ll kind of get out of it, but then also get in deeper (probably killing more people he didn’t want to kill, right?). We’ll just have to wait very patiently to see how it all plays out (and that wasn’t really a spoiler as so many people getting killed off in Barry).

The Simpsons Secure Their 31st and 32nd Seasons at Fox

This puts The Simpsons at 713 episodes, furthering their run as the longest running scripted TV show in all of entertainment history. Perhaps, it might even crack beating some of the record holders for unscripted TV shows (those range in thousands FYI).

With their place in history/pop culture/zeitgeist well secured, we’ll be curious to see if and what they’ll do about Apu with these two new seasons regarding Hari Kondabolu’s Problem With Apu, if anything at all.

‘Modern Family’ Will Get an 11th and Final Season at ABC

Without question, Modern Family is one of those era defining sitcoms and, as such, its exit after this 11th season might signal the end of an era. What’s interesting is that if you think about the pilot of Modern Family all those years ago, it seems to be kind of like The Office set within a multi-generational family. In a few ways, it got to be a multi-cam and single camera comedy at the same time, a very rare feat to pull off.

Of course, it became its own beloved show and garnered critical and commercial success over several seasons, but we’d be curious to see what sort of lasting impression it will leave on the next generation of sitcoms that will have a similar run.

Maybe that next long-running show will end up being The Good Place and it’ll be a new era of extremely high concept comedy with heart. Unfortunately, only time will tell, but you will at least get one more season of Modern Family in the meantime.

The Good Place Renewed for a Fourth Season at NBC

Well, well, well. Here’s some good news with no strings attached.

By the way, at this pace with The Office, Parks and Recreation, The Good Place, and the recently-transplanted-to-NBC Brooklyn Nine-Nine, we wouldn’t be surprised if Mike Schur ended up running NBC or, at least, NBC comedy if that’s what he wanted to do.

Big Mouth Renewed for Season 3 at Netflix

We definitely think this is a no-brainer on Netflix’s part as season 2 definitely elevated the animated series on all fronts (as well as getting even more topping how blue it could get), but we’re curious how long Kroll and Goldberg will aim to have this explicit animated series about puberty go as Andrew, Nick, Jay, and Jessi can’t stay teens forever.

Still, we’ll definitely be looking forward to checking over our shoulder if someone is watching us watch that at a coffee shop.

Even after 5 seasons of successfully exploring so many different tones and arcs and being topical in a sincere way and having some of the best animal sight gags in entertainment history, BoJack Horseman continues to surprise, delight, and enrapture us and stand out in a very crowded field of both animation and dramedy.

We won’t be surprised if there’s an elective college course on BoJack before too long.

Congratulations on a well deserved sixth season.

Look, as you well know, there were so many shuttered TV shows this week, that’d we’d like to highlight some of the very few that got to stay alive for another cycle.

Final Space, the outer space dramedy from Olan Rogers, will get to see the light of its second season.

The slightly more mature family comedy The Detour from Jason Jones and Samantha Bee will continue on it’s own self-made path for season 4.

Both shows are at TBS and will remain there as their indie-leaning-comedy branding continues to get more and more sharpened.
