The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 263: Shannon O’Neill & Molding Comedy Into a Potholder

July 9, 2025
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
ceramics, improv, nyc comedy, shannon o'neill, ucb

While many of you have to come, know, and love the fantastic Shannon O’Neill through improv and wherever you watch TV, she has discovered another marvelous facet of herself through her work in ceramics. In fact, she’s just about to close out her very first exhibition Beat One at The Empty Circle in Brooklyn and was very keen on infusing a comedic spirit into the whole experience of making, presenting, and interacting with her pieces. We have a truly wondrous conversation about art, improv, and the cross-pollination of the two on this week’s TCB Field Report.

Follow Shannon @spotastic and @sporamics on IG and make sure to make the closing party for Beat One and the Empty Circle in Brooklyn this Friday, July 11th at 6PM.

Thank goodness to the Yes And… Laughter Lab Comedy Festival AKA the YALL Comedy Fest. This week’s TCB Field Report chats with the leadership team at YALL Comedy, Mik Moore, Erika Soto Lamb, and Chike Robinson on putting on this festival that fervently believes that comedy can make a difference and aims to make that notion a truth.

June 24, 2024

brooklyn, nora jefferies, nyc comedy, paige smith hogan, sounds great

When greeted with the centuries old maxim “All good things must come to an end,” it’s a pretty fun response to shoot back, “SOUNDS GREAT!”

Pick of the Day: Josh Sharp’s New Thing (in NYC)

June 21, 2024
News
brooklyn, josh sharp, littlefield, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

Leave it one of the stars and minds behind the groundbreaking Dicks: The Musical to try something so ridiculous ambitious as having hundreds and hundreds of slides accompany brand new stand-up material.

Come Thursday, July 25th, Josh Sharp will attempt to have a 1000 cues memorized as there will be at least that many slides in a presentation coinciding with his new hour of stand-up. May some grace smile on the tech person in tech booth that evening and that Sharp revel in this pretty absurd (albeit very funny) challenge.

Josh Sharp’s New Thing is set for 8PM that Thurs. 7/25 at littlefield. Tickets are $18.67 a pop and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Dave Ross Tapes His First F*cking Special (in NYC) 6/22

June 5, 2024
News
brooklyn, dave ross, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

It’s no secret that The Gutter has quickly become a hot spot for stand-up in not only Brooklyn, but NYC as a whole and that a lot of quality specials are being produced under that CYSKNYC banner.

The latest such taping will be none other than the debut special of one Dave Ross, formerly beloved LA comedy stalwart now transplanted and really in his groove in the NYC scene. It has been years since Dave’s very first recorded hour, the wonderfully named, The Only Man Who Has Ever Had Sex, and we can’t wait to see Dave’s signature voice and effortless and hilarious shifts between sarcasm and sincerity in a full fledged comedy special.

For those in NYC, get tickets for one of the two tapings on Sat. Jun. 22nd at 8PM or 10:30PM (they’re only $10) and be part of what should be hell of a great night of stand-up comedy.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 219: Dave Ross & Getting Back Into Doing Everything

June 5, 2024
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
dave ross, nyc comedy

There was a time where Dave Ross was doing seemingly all the things you could be doing in comedy in LA and doing them so well. While that was years ago, Dave has since transplanted himself to NYC, taken some much needed rest, and then revved himself back up to putting on his own live shows, putting out a record out once a month, and prepping for his very first special taping (on 6/22 @ The Gutter in Brooklyn-Tix available here). We catch up with Dave while he’s on the road to talk all about thriving in NYC and diving back into everything he took a break from.

Pick of the Day: The Stepfathers 4 Years Later (in NYC) 5/27

May 13, 2024
News
alex dickson, connor ratliff, improv, nyc comedy, sebastian conelli, shannon o'neill, the stepfathers

One of NYC’s most revered and celebrated improv groups, The Stepfathers, is finally returning to the stage after a long slumber because, well, something happened in 2020. Honestly, NYC improv hasn’t really been the same without them, so let’s hope this is the improv version of Punxsutawney Phil signaling the end of winter coming.

The comedy brilliance of Shannon O’Neill, Connor Ratliff, Alex Dickson & Sebastian Conelli will be assembling at Caveat on Monday, May 27th at 7PM and go above and beyond with “making sad things funny”. Tickets are only $24.41 and, somehow, there are still a few left for you to snag. Better go get them here while you can.

Pick of the Day: Abolish Everything: Tournament of Champions (in NYC) 6/1

May 8, 2024
News
abolish everything, annie rauwerda, chandler dean, debate, game show, nyc comedy

In such divisive times, some great comedy gold can be mined from leaning in even further to those divisions (well, when they’re kind of pretty absurd). Hence, Chandler Dean’s Abolish Everything is a rollicking ride of passionately pleaded cases to abolish, as the title suggests, anything and everything as decided by the finely curated line-up of comics on the bill.

It’s been such a hoot, that Dean is going to have an Abolish Everything Tournament of Champions featuring the comics that are the very best at talking up the ridiculous things that should be scorched from this world. On June 1st, at Caveat in LES, the following Abolish Everything heavy hitters will go toe-to-toe:

Henry Block
Augusta Chapman
Sarah Gruen
Amy Muller
Annie Rauwerda
Kathryn Margaret Rose
Cara Michelle Smith
Marielle Sarmiento
Jason Siegel
Felipe Torres Medina

Tickets are $20 right now, but $25 day of. You can also access a livestream for $10. Get more info and tix right here right now.

Pick of the Day: OK Stupid (in NYC) 5/3

May 1, 2024
News
brooklyn, caroline doyle, dating game, dating show, emily kob, nyc comedy, ok stupid, union hall

Reality TV purports to show strangers finding true love, but there is so much that goes into casting and producing such a thing that it’s hard to imagine it being truly genuine.

Thankfully, Caroline Doyle and Emily Kob are bringing you unfiltered truth when it comes to a comedy dating game show with their show, OK Stupid, by having actual blind date on stage with a beloved local comedian.

For this edition, fast rising NYC comedy up and comers Marley Gotterer, Julia Desmond, and Evan Lazarus will be joining Doyle and Kob through all the delightful blind date comedy chaos. This next edition of OK Stupid is set for this Friday, May 3rd at 10PM at Union Hall. Tickets are only $15.64 and we highly suggest getting them here.

Pick of the Day: A Tale of Two Titties: Stupid Cancer Fundraiser (in NYC) 5/7

April 29, 2024
News
cancer, julia johns, nyc comedy, solo show, storytelling

While there is a wave of solo shows that are coming around right now as Edinburgh Fringe and various other Fringe festivals are on the horizon, you might wonder which ones to put your money and time into and which one’s to, perhaps, skip.

Well, Julia Johns’ A Tale of Two Titties is certainly in the category of solo shows you’ve got to watch. Over the last few years, Johns, a cancer survivor, has made, possibly, the most delightful show that you could make about going through such an awful experience and a unique one at that since it’s illustrated personally by her. It’s ultimately a joyful, hopeful show that’s bristling with several refreshing brushes of silliness that might be the perfect blend of what one might need to see on stage right now.

For New Yorkers, the amazingly titled A Tale of Two Titties will be playing at Littlefield come Tues. May 7th at 8PM. Tickets are $15.08 and will be raising funds for Stupid Cancer, an org dedicated to “empowering adolescents and young adult cancer patients”.

Get get tix right here right now.

Pick of the Day: Fern Brady: I Gave You Milk to Drink (in NYC) 5/23

April 18, 2024
News
bell house, brooklyn, fern brady, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

While a good lot of Yanks might know the name Daniel Sloss, there are definitely way more Scottish comedians that you ought to know and enjoy. Fern Brady is a name of another Scot that you should commit to memory for all her wit and frankness (see and please enjoy Power & Chaos).

Brady is in NYC next month and will be playing for one night in Brooklyn’s own Bell House for two shows. One of them is already sold, but you can still get tix for the 10PM show on Thurs. May 23rd, which you really ought to do sooner rather than later. They’re $40.60 a pop and you can (and should) go get ’em here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 212: Kate Willett & Comedy Making a Difference: Question Mark

Kate Willett is not only coming out with a special that really stands out of the rest of the pack this year (and oh what a pack of dozens there is of YouTube specials uploaded every week), but is already working on her very next hour and a solo show as well as being as involved as possible in socialist communities and activism, which sometimes has its intersection in comedy. This week’s TCB Field Report talks to Kate about coming up with her keeping the tides of her comedy going as well as navigating her way between pursuits in comedy and trying to effect direct change.

Pick of the Day: UCB NY Previews Starting 4/23

April 17, 2024
News
improv, nyc comedy, sketch comedy, upright citizens bridage

It feels like so long ago that the Upright Citizens Brigade had a presence/space in NYC and, well, that’s because it has been. As the COVID-19 pandemic caused a wave of venues shuddering in 2020, UCB was certainly not immune and had to close up shop indefinitely both in LA and NYC.

Thankfully, here in 2024, UCB Franklin has been more than alive and kicking again and finally, at last, the very new UCB NY at 242 East 14th Street in Manhattan (right between Gramercy Park and Ukrainian Village) will open with previews of their staple shows (Harold, Maude, Spank, etc.) starting Tues. Apr. 23rd.

Tickets are all very much on sale right now and you best snatch them up quick before they very likely will sell out. Do so right now right here.

Pick of the Day: Newcomers (in NYC) 4/15

April 9, 2024
News
bell house, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

It’s time for Newcomers, another round of The Bell House anointing another round of up-and-comers that have cut their teeth in the highly competitive, very crowded comedy scene to grace one of Brooklyn’s most venerable stages. 15 handpicked comedians will show off their tightest sets as if they were doing late night back in the time and place when that was much more commonplace.

On this edition of Newcomers, will be:

  • Salma Zaky
  • Anne Lim
  • Joey Hamburger
  • Sean Peecook
  • Sam Ike
  • Allie Lawrence
  • TaTa Sherise
  • Momo
  • Neel Ghosh
  • Grace Leishman
  • Jess Elgene
  • Tommy Bayer
  • Taylor Rogers
  • Grace Johnson
  • Eli Ruffer

Don’t miss their debut on Mon. Apr. 15th at 7:30PM. Tickets are $12.85 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: PSYCH! A Diagnostic Stand-Up Therapy Comedy Show (in NYC) 4/27

April 4, 2024
News
caveat, emily flake, kate sisk, kenice mobley, mental health, nyc comedy, stand up comedy, therapy

It’s not a hard requirement to have mental health issues when pursuing a career in comedy, but there certainly to seems to be a strong common thread between many stand-up comedians and their difficulties with anxiety, depression, and the like. It certainly comes through in many of their wonderfully crafted jokes/bits/stories.

Other times, you hear comedic material and you might ponder, from the audience, is the person on stage OK?

With that in mind, Aimee LeCours, both a comedian and LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Counselor) is going to talk to a rousing line-up of NYC comedians about what they talk about on stage and possibly see what exactly lies beneath what might seem, on the surface, just a pretty great joke for the upcoming live show, PSYCH!

Emily Flake, Kate Sisk, and Kenice Mobley will get put under the emotional microscope on Sat. Apr. 27th at 4PM at Caveat in NYC’s LES. Tickets are only $15 and you best go get them here.

Pick of the Day: RED BASTARD (in NYC) 3/31

March 28, 2024
News
brooklyn, brooklyn comedy collective, clown, eric davis, nyc comedy, red bastard

While there is certain a burgeoning of clown in the LA comedy scene for the last few years at this point, denizens of NYC comedy aren’t necessarily treated to the same sort of ready access to this facet of the comedic arts. For that reason, New Yorkers daring to see the boundaries of comedy and where they’re at these days outside of stand-up, sketch, and improv, might want to mark down this Sunday at 7PM on their calendar.

That’s the time and day when Red Bastard, acclaimed, award winning Edinburgh Fringe act is taking over the Brooklyn Comedy Collective to do his very special odyssey of a solo show (especially so for a select number of brave audience members). At the risk of revealing of what is up Red Bastard’s bulbous sleeves, we won’t say much more other than tickets are $16.88 and, if you get one, you’ll very likely have some sort of transformative experience on top of laughing your ass off.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 209: Sydney Duncan & Being Enough in All the Comedy Spaces

March 27, 2024
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
character comedy, nyc comedy, sketch comedy, sydney duncan

While it would seem that stand up and comedy clubs reign supreme in the NYC comedy scene, there are plenty of performers that defy that notion and not only go for alternative spaces and types of comedy, but find ways in between all of them. One such comedian is Sydney Duncan who constantly switches gears between performing in character, as herself, on stage solo, with other folks on teams, and so much more. It’s a delicate balance to strike to do try to fit in the pre-existing spaces in comedy and simultaneously make those perfectly suited to you, but Sydney has amazingly found her footing in doing so.

We talk to Sydney on this week’s TCB Field Report all about that, this, and the other things in her lanes of NYC comedy.

Pick of the Day: Mad Ethnic Mondays: April Residency (in NYC)

March 25, 2024
News
bunton's world famous, nyc comedy, petey deabreu, stand up comedy

It’s undeniable that Petey DeAbreu is a stalwart of the NYC comedy scene. DeAbreu might be one of the most brightly shining examples of what the grit and grind of the NYC stand-up circuit can produce. Clever, provincial, yet worldly, all with a tinge of surreal silliness, one should absolutely catch DeAbreu wherever he’s playing whenever he’s going up.

Thankfully, that’s going to be pretty easy next month considering that he’ll get to reprise his Monday night residency, Mad Ethnic Mondays, at the Bushwick institutional watering hole, Bunton’s World Famous, all April long..

For just $12.51, you’ll be seeing Petey presiding over the comedic stylings of:

Simeon Goodson
Kareem Greene
Kevin Iso
Sam Jay

Pick of the Day: Jena Friedman (in NYC) 4/4

March 22, 2024

The brilliant Jena Friedman has been meticulously crafting her new hour pretty much exclusively in LA, but, thankfully, is starting to branch out the Los Angeles city limits to bring her oh-so-cleverly rendered and timely dark humor to rest of the U.S.

She has a whole handful of tour dates ahead of her, but she very specifically playing Brooklyn’s Union Hall in April. Specifically, she’ll be working on her new hour on Thurs. Apr. 4th at 7:30PM (and probably have a wondrous opener TBA). It has been pretty much a whole year since Jena was in NYC last, so don’t miss out on catching her this time around at $24.63 a pop.

Pick of the Day: Drunk Bollywood (in NYC) 4/26

March 19, 2024
News
bollywood, brooklyn, drunk bollywood live, littlefield, nyc comedy

Sure, you’ve seen Drunk History and multiple iterations of things being recounted or reread or re-enacted while inebriated, but it’s pretty new territory to give that treatment to the multiplex cinema of India, better known as Bollywood.

Drunk Bollywood Live aims to do just that with a live staged reading of a celebrated Bollywood production, but done with, as one might have guessed, a drunk cast. For this latest edition of Drunk Bollywood Live, they’re tackling big budget action hit Main Hoon Na! starring one of Bollywood’s biggest action stars Shah Rukh Khan.

Even if you’re not well versed in India cinema, we have a hard time imagining this wouldn’t be one hell of a good time. This next Drunk Bollywood Live is set for Fri. Apr. 26th at 7:30PM. Tickets are $31 and you best go get them here.
