Lyric Hyperion Is Swinging Big with Debut Comedy Specials from Emily Browning and Joey Greer at New Production Arm, Spesh!

August 29, 2025
News
ahmed bharoocha, alyssa sabo, babs gray, comedy special, emily browning, harper rose drummond, joey greer, kat bird, lyric hyperion, Natasha Mercado, spesh, uriah wesman, veronica osorio

While there are many a multi-national media conglomerate that are interested in the world of putting out comedy specials and content, do not count out smaller outfits being able to come to the table and play with the “big boys”.

Case in point, the mighty Lyric Hyperion, the long-beloved, forward thinking comedy theatre and performance space (and cafe) has just officially launched their very own production arm, Spesh!, in order to take some big swings and give the networks and streamers alike a run for their money (even with their very deep pockets). This team has taken a long gander at the comedy special landscape and seen a lot of the very same uploaded to everywhere and wanted to shake things up/break the mold with their spirit of “alt comedy 4 all”. Headed up by LH’s very own Sean Casey, Mike Bridenstine, and Jake Kroeger*, Spesh! “…will focus on producing trailblazing specials direct to YouTube alongside short vertical content across socials.”

Their very first specials will be a wild and great start for Spesh! with the debut hours from Emily Browning and Joey Greer, two very treasured voices in the vast and expansive LA comedy scene. Browning’s Temporary, Beautiful, due out Sept. 4th exclusively on YouTube, is equally splendid parts comedy, balloons, songs, and an “elevated deconstruction of crowd work” and Greer is seeking to redefine the entirety of what a comedy can (and should) be with Teeny Tiny, due out on Sept. 12th.

Following that, Spesh! is already on to lining up their next set of comedy luminaries that they’re looking to develop specials/hours with including: Ahmed Bharoocha (The Late Show, Dream Corp LLC), Kat Bird (Comedy Store Door Guy), Harper-Rose Drummond (Parallel Play), Babs Gray (Toxic: The Britney Spears Story, Lady to Lady), Natasha Mercado (The Joe Schmo Show), Veronica Osorio (Hail, Caesar!), Alyssa Sabo (120K+ followers), and Uriah Wesman (Three Cults Walk into a Bar).

From the looks of it, Spesh! could very well be a torch bearer for the future of alt comedy and we’re absolutely here for it.

*yes, that’s TCB’s very own Jake Kroeger.

Pick of the Day: No More Mr. Mean Guy (in LA) 5/16

May 6, 2024
News
experimental comedy, los angeles comedy, lyric hyperion, nick vatterott, stand up comedy

Nick Vatterott is hands down one of the most innovative comedians around (just watch any of his late night sets or his special Disingenuous) who constantly bends rules/reality/joke structure into some of the most hysterical things we’ve ever seen.

Vatterott will be taking on a new challenge coming up by attempting to take a different approach than what seems to be the tenor of the times (Netflix did just put on a 3 hour roast of Tom Brady that’s a far cry from what roasts were in Dean Martin/Don Rickles’ day) with stand-up comedy: being nice.

Next Thursday, May 16th at 9:30PM at Lyric Hyperion, Nick will attempt what seems impossible these days by not being “Mr. Mean Guy” and being hysterical. If there’s someone to pull it off with his clever revelry in absurdity, it would be Nick and whoever else he has up his sleeve.

Tickets are only $10 for this experiment of Nick’s and you can (and very much should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Bug Mane Maneifesto 3 (in LA) 4/24

March 27, 2024
News
bugmane, experimental comedy, la comedy, lyric hyperion, sketch comedy

There is, shall we say, an entity most popularly known as Bug Mane. Born of the desire to bring chaos on to The Doughboys podcast, Bugmane has taken a life unto its own, melding multiple facets of reality into their own realm of comedy and comedy to be reveled in.

Thus, it’s quite the occasion to take part of such spiritual mishegoss in person as you can at the Lyric Hyperion. That’s right Bugmane has been regularly doing so-called Maneifestos at Lyric Hyperion since the conclusion of 2023 and has the very next one lined up for Wed Apr. 24th at 9:30PM complete with the Bug Mane faithful of Mike Mitchell, Ivy Wolk, Kat Toledo, Paul Rust, Ryan Perez, Van Roubichaux, and, of course, DJ King Koeth.

So, best go get your tickets right now right here for $15 a pop while you still can.

Pick of the Day: Clean Eats (in LA) 12/29

December 27, 2023
News
clowning, family friendly, los angeles, lyric hyperion, Natasha Mercado

If you’ve bore witness to clowning in LA over the last several years, you might have seen some of the most hysterical absurd performances that hinged on a celebrating the human experience (often via embracing failure in the face of the impossible). Also, if you’ve seen that, you’ve probably seen your fair share of nudity, things being stuck in several different holes, and other not so G, PG, or PG-13 rated things.

So, for one night, we are (yes, our very own Jake Kroeger is involved in devising this) challenging some of these oft-raunchy LA clowns to be innocent and not resort to ditching clothing or their “normal” and very funny graphic acts (and still funny for adults like Pixar does). Thanks to the clowning expertise of Natasha Mercado, she’ll live direct and make sure everything is family friendly, but not in the cheesy, corny, stereotypical “family friendly” way.

This Friday isn’t a school night, so take the whole family out (or see if they’ll be able to not go blue) for a clowning journey unlike any other aat 9:30PM at Lyric Hyperion, especially since it’ll be G-rated as all H-E-Double-Hockeysticks. Tickets are $15 right now and you best go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Meme Fighter LIVE! (in LA) 9/23

September 5, 2023
News
Dylan Adler, game show, ify nwadiwe, jenny zigrino, los angeles comedy, lyric hyperion, meme fighter, nick gligor

As it stands now, there is no undisputed sort of King of Iron Fist Tournament for comedy, but, we here at The Comedy Bureau have partnered with brand spankin’ new app, Meme Fighter, to get a bit closer to such a thing with the aptly named Meme Fighter LIVE!

As you might surmise, we pit some of the very best comedians (and you know we mean that when WE here at TCB say it) versus each other with memes as the only “weapon” at their disposal. Meme Fighter Live! will decide comedy supremacy through the shrewdest, most hysterical manipulation of the language of the Internet.

For this inaugural edition, we have the esteemed “fighters” of Dylan Adler, Ify Nwadiwe & Jenny Zigrino, all undeniable comedic forces in their own rights under the presiding of one of the best hosts around, Nick Gligor. They will all gather at Lyric Hyperion on Sat. Sept. 23rd at 9:30PM and for $15 you can get a front row seat to see who is the cleverest and funniest of them all (seriously, we’re part of the running the show, which means it’ll be a damn good time).

Get tickets right now right here.

Pick of the Day: Fiona Landers: Funeral Bouquet (in LA) 4/7

March 30, 2023
News
fiona landers, los angeles comedy, lyric hyperion, musical comedy, solo show

Thinking about how live comedy is occurring basically at the levels from the before times, we’ve been delightfully reminded, over and over, that many of the things we enjoyed from what seems like decades ago are still around. With a renewed energy coming out of the pandemic, it’s a truly nice surprise to know that there are many a grand thing that we haven’t lost.

One of those things is Fiona Landers‘ ambitious solo musical show Funeral Bouquet that fearlessly and hysterically unpacks a specific grief-filled time in her life. Years and year ago, after we first saw it, we wrote, “Truly, Fiona’s stories accompanied by deftly constructed songs that touch on cancer, death, and rape cover the range of being so damn funny to being so damn heartbreaking (all in the best way possible),” and we still stand by that. Knowing that Fiona is putting Funeral Bouquet up once again at the Lyric Hyperion next week on Fri. Apr. 7th at 7:30PM, it’s thus imperative that we urge you to catch this next performance.

Tickets are $10 and you best go get them here and revel in her show next Friday.

Pick of the Day: The Golden Girlz (in LA) 1/27-2/5

News
alaska thunderfuck, golden girlz, jackie beat, live reading, los angeles comedy, lyric hyperion, sam pancake, sherry vine

The Golden Girlz, LA’s favorite reimagining of the revered sitcom, The Golden Girls, done by LA’s best drag performers, is returning once again (and they are still tickets available). The long running show has been one of Los Angeles’ quickest shows when it comes to selling out all available seats and it was probably for the best if you set up some sort of alert or reminder for the next one.

Fortunately for you, there are still tickets available for the latest run of The Golden Girlz, featuing your favorites Jackie Beat, Sherry Vine, and Sam Pancake as well as the one and only Alaska Thunderfuck as Rose Nylund. It’ll be running this weekend and next at the new new Lyric Hyperion, specifically, Fridays and Saturdays will have 8PM and 10PM shows and Sundays will go on at 4PM, 7PM, and 9PM.

Tickets are $40 a pop right now and you better not hesitate in getting tickets as they will absolutely sell out.

Pick of the Day: The Lyric Comedy Hour with Daniel Van Kirk and Irene Tu (in LA) Wednesdays Starting 1/18

January 12, 2023
News
beth stelling, chris estrada, daniel van kirk, ever mainard, irene tu, los angeles comedy, lyric hyperion, rory scovel

As you settle into remembering to date everything with 2023, you should also remember that the Lyric Hyperion is re-reopening with both a renewed vigor and a reverence for what the hallowed theater space used to be pre-pandemic. There is so much that’s up the sleeve of new new Lyric Hyperion that you should check out (and that we’ll highlight for you here) in the coming weeks and months (and, hopefully, years).

One of those many things will be a weekly stand-up show co-hosted by treasured LA comedy staples Daniel Van Kirk and Irene Tu called The Lyric Comedy Hour. On Wednesdays at 7:30PM starting Jan. 18th, Van Kirk, Tu, and the Lyric will bring together a nice and tight round-up of the city’s very best comedians, both established and ones that you should be on the look out for.

The inaugural Lyric Comedy Hour will have one hell of a line-up with Rory Scovel, Chris Estrada, Beth Stelling, and Ever Mainard.

Tickets are only $10 and you can (and should) get them every week here.

Pick of the Day: What’s Your Problem, Sir? with Ever Mainard (in LA) 1/12 & 1/26

December 29, 2022
News
crowd work, ever mainard, los angeles comedy, lyric hyperion

Two things we’re definitely looking forward to in 2023: the re-rebirth of Lyric Hyperion in Silverlake and way more Ever Mainard. The treasured venue is back on track to be more of what it was right before lockdown thanks to one Sean Casey and part of that will include Ever doing their improvised/crowd-work show that’s always such a superb thrill to be a part of.

Mainard’s penchant for being present and chasing tangents is one of the more enthralling and dynamic things we get to see out here in the LA comedy scene and an opportunity to see that for an hour should absolutely not be missed.

So, on Thurs. Jan. 12th & Jan. 26th (and then every 2nd Thursday after that) at 7:30PM, Mainard will take command of the newly refurbished stage at Lyric Hyperion to round the audience in the best type of chaos. Go get your tickets here right now for $12 a pop.

News
la comedy, lyric hyperion, mk paulsen, silverlake, simon gibson, stand up comedy

Leading into 2020, it was a time where not only was there so much live comedy to go see, but one could treat themselves to seeing the very funny likes of Simon Gibson and M.K. Paulsen all the time. Having been roommates, doing a podcast together, being on a reality show about JFL, and more, Simon and M.K. are perhaps, LA comedy’s favorite odd couple.

Smack dab in the middle of 2022, we’re getting back to the volume of comedy that we had almost three years ago and part of that return is M.K. and Simon having a weekly stand-up showcase at the newly refurbished Lyric Hyperion. Called In-Unit Laundry, Simon and M.K. will gather their favorite comedy folks from the scene (and whatever good folks are in town) Tuesdays at 8PM PT at 2106 Hyperion Ave.

They’re kicking off this weekly run on Jul. 19th and tickets are only $10 if you buy them in advance here.

With an inaugural line-up of Joel Kim Booster, James Adomian, Kylie Brakeman, Solomon Georgio, Erik Rivera, and Steph Tolev, it’s a show that damn well better not miss.

Robby Hoffman is at it again.

“It” being commandeering beloved and retired The Chris Gethard Show to do her own version of the show, which is arguably a very on-brand TCGS to continue to the show.

Hoffman’s version of the show gets into similar beautiful and hilarious chaos that Gethard did, but does so with her own cheeky alpha energy. Also, special guests could range from comedians, actors, etc. all the way to real estate agents making for a truly unpredictable, but downright hysterical night.

Tickets usually sell out for this, so best go get them for $12 right now (even though the show is a month away).

The Lyric Hyperion has become a destination to see comedy that’s different, boundary pushing, genre-blending, eye-opening, and, of course, so much damn fun.

One of the pillars of the theater is the occasional runs of the “Monday Nights” crew of Bill O’Neill, Courtney Pauroso, Natalie Palimides, Chad Damiani, Juzo Yoshida, Max Baumgarten, Ian Bratschie, and Christina Catherine Martinez led by Lyric Hyperion ringleader and artistic director Dr. Brown. They are the best of the best of their clowning/solo performers banded together for some top shelf tomfoolery (plenty have won awards and they even got to be featured on FX’s Cake last year).

Mon. Feb. 17th at 7PM will see the return of the Monday Night Crew for a special fundraiser benefit for the Lyric Hyperion (as a non-profit, it needs all of our support). Tickets are $15 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

You’re Gonna Love This might be the perfect comedy show to go see on Valentine’s Day?

You’re Gonna Love This, presented by Maddie Connors & Katy Fishell, has female/queer comedians present all the sorts of things that their significant others tried oh so hard to get them into (whether it’s the sort of thing that they would love or not).

It’s a tribute to loves past, but also a justified dissection of a perhaps ridiculous thing that they had to “go along with”.

For this special, Valentine’s Day edition, they have a wondrous line-up Megan Gailey, Jared Goldstein, Robby Hoffman, Nori Reed, and Jon Millstein who we’re sure have some hysterical things about the things that they were forced into liking.

Tickets are $10 (and they usually sell out). So, go get your tickets right here, right now.

The endlessly creative and funny Lindsay Ames has been spending the better part of 2019 building the scrumptious web series Make That Sandwich where she makes some of the most delicious looking sandwiches that have ever been conceived.

To kick off 2020, Lindsay is not only doing some live sandwich making for a live edition of Make That Sandwich, but coupling it with live comedy by having comedians “help” her MAKE THAT SANDWICH. The line-up is pretty robust as you can see with Adam Conover from Adam Ruins Everything, Jade Catta-Preta, the new host of The Soup, the fantastic podcast Get Rick Nick, and wonderful comedian Jessimae Peluso.

Sounds pretty grand, no? For all of this, tickets are only $10 right now ($15 at door). Go snag some right now right here.

The notion that the title Garry Starr Performs Everything seems ambitious, if not a little ridiculous of course. However, this solo show that he does is indeed so all encompassing of how amazingly funny Starr is in every facet of comedic performance, especially with his knack for physical comedy/clowning.

We don’t want to give too much away as we’d like for Garry Starr Performs Everything to take you as much by surprise as possible (though you should know this is definitely an adult show), but we will say the way he satirizes theater as a concept is flat out brilliant.

Garry Starr Performs Everything is going up again at the Lyric Hyperion on Wed. Feb. 5th at 9PM. Tickets are $10 and you very much should get them here.

We’re not exactly sure what’s going to happen here, but, then again, that is the magic and wonder that is the absurdist experimental comedy offered up humbly by Kyle Mizono and Anna Seregina.

There will be some holiday surprises, guests, but, apparently, you’ve got to stand at the door? Again, it’s a little vague as to what that will be, but we trust in Kyle and Anna to make the best immersive holiday comedy experience with whatever secret plans they have in store for us all.

The mystery of Come Home for the Holidays with Kyle and Anna but Please Stand at the Door at Lyric Hyperion next weekend will probably rival the mystery of opening up any holiday gift.
