Pick of the Day: Live at Tribeca Drive-In @ Rose Bowl

July 2, 2020
News
comedy dynamics, daniel rugg webb, dave helem, drive in theater, erica rhodes, ester steinberg, live comedy, stand up comedy

With the return to popularity that drive-in theaters have gotten during these months of lockdown, it’s no surprise to see that other forms of entertainment are opting to try to do something at a drive-in that isn’t just screening a movie because people can stay in their cars to stay safe as the COVID-19 pandemic persists (as well as being one of the very few permitted public events right now). That indeed includes live comedy. LA hasn’t gotten the experience of a live drive-in stand-up comedy show yet, though that will be changing next week.

Comedy Dynamics is hosting four exclusive nights of live stand-up comedy, July 9th-12th at 9PM, at the Tribeca Drive-In pop-up at The Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The Tribeca Drive-In itself actually starts screening movies tonight.

Headlining will be a handful of comedians that you ought to get to know since they’ll, as far as we’ve seen, probably rise further up the comedy ladder than they already have very soon. That includes Dave Helem, Ester Steinberg, Daniel Webb, and Erica Rhodes performing 7/9-7/12 respectively.

Tickets are $26 per vehicle and you can go get tickets here. If you do go, do take proper caution and limit physical contact, wear a mask, and maintain distance at all times. Also, please note that Comedy Dynamics will be taping these performances for “later viewing” if you’d rather stay safe at home and still watch.

Pick of the Day: Pretty Pretty Pony with Tony Hale

Throughout our tenure, Pretty, Pretty Pony has been one of our favorite improv groups throughout LA’s vast collection of improv teams (we even picked them for one of our annual 100 Best Things in Comedy We Were Witness To in No Particular Order).

Housed at Santa Monica’s Westside Comedy Theater, they were occupying a monthly slot featuring great guest monologists and a razor sharp team of some of the best improvisers around.

That would include:
Chris Alvarado (Comedy Bang! Bang!/Heyday)
Joey Greer (Mission IMPROVable/Bear Supply)
Vanessa Ragland (Pop My Culture Podcast/Ragland & Greer)
Ed Roe (The Best Man/Queen George)
Atul Singh (Mission IMPROVable/Westside Sketch Co.)
Cole Stratton (Pop My Culture Podcast/SF Sketchfest)

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the Westside Comedy Theater to temporarily close its door, but Pretty, Pretty Pony will keep the show going with one fantastic guest, Tony Hale (Veep, Arrested Development), this Fri. Apr. 17th on WCT’s Twitch channel. The show is free to watch, but they’ll be taking donations for the theater via voluntary ticket purchase here.

Pick of the Day: Fancy Sauce (i.e. Return of Sauce Comedy)

March 12, 2020
News
comedy show, live comedy, los angeles, stand up comedy

For every day of the week, there is usually one or more weekly live comedy shows that you can rely on in the Greater LA Area to deliver you the best in stand-up, sketch, and improv. For Fridays, Sauce was absolutely one of those shows and hosts and LA comedy favorites Barbara Gray, Erin Lampart, Jeff Wattenhofer, and Brodie Reed maintained a damn good stand-up comedy show (that always included some jaunty, original bits and characters) at 8PM at Desano Pizza Bakery for years and years.

Now, after a bit of a hiatus, Sauce is back, but has evolved into Fancy Sauce and will be going up at The Airliner on Fridays, starting next month. We have no doubt that they’ll be as good as they have ever been in The Airliner’s brand spanking new, wonderful upstairs show room.

So, Fancy Sauce will be in Lincoln Heights (just North of DTLA) starting Fridays at April 3rd at 9PM. Tickets will be $5 and it should be part of your weekly comedy diet, especially if you live far on the Eastside.

Kimia Behpoornia has been a go-to performer for UCB for many years now, whether it be improv or sketch or whatever other crazy thing they come up with.

While it’s worth catching her on Harold or Maude Night or Great Sketch!, the idea that she’s actually going to test for her black belt as a comedy show has our interest beyond peaked.

That’s right, Kimia will be doing a martial arts test at UCB Sunset at the end of the month and our minds are racing as to figure out what could possibly happen ((notice how she’s even credited as a Black Belt Candidate as opposed to cast, writer, etc.).

We’re sure there’s a whole other bevy of surprises for Kimia Tests for Her Blackbelt: LIVE (as many other go-to UCB performers are on the bill), but the testing for the black belt itself ought to be something special.

So, Kimia Tests for Her Blackbelt: LIVE is set for Wed. Jan. 29th at 10:30PM. Tickets are $7 and you can (and should) get them here.

For us, Straw Men has time and again proven that some of the best* debates are ones where the debates are pushed to be as childish as possible.

They’re back once again for another round of beautifully petty-as-can-be presentations at UCB Sunset on Fri. Nov. 29th at 9PM at UCB Sunset.

Forget about Black Friday and spend your $12 going to one hell of a live comedy show featuring the intentionally ludicrous arguments of Dave Ross, Will Miles, Debra DiGiovanni, Nick Ciarelli, Brad Evans, Chris Charpentier, and Sarah Sherman as well as hosts/and very judgy debate judges Lindsay Adams, Danny Palumbo, and Sam Wiles.

*by “best”, we mean best in a comedy context where no real change is going to be enacted or threat of social change is imminent

Pretty much as soon as the first show was announced, An Evening with 4/5 of the Whitest Kids U Know at The Pack Theater sold out. A second show was added and also sold out shortly thereafter.

Fret not, as both performances from the cult sketch group next week will be selling standing room tickets at the door for both shows for $10.

So, make sure you get to The Pack Theater this coming Thurs., Aug. 30th well before 9PM to make sure you get in on what ought to be a damn fun night of (somewhat) controlled chaos.

Echoes Under Sunset To Be Reborn as Echoes on Pico

A few years ago, there was a marvelous, intimate performance space in Echo Park where plenty of comedy, music, art shows, screenings, etc. would happen called Echoes Under Sunset run by one Christian Chavez. It was so beloved and popular that it actually got to be an LA Weekly pick for Best New Comedy Club in 2014.

image

Due to some unforeseen circumstances, they had to close their doors and effectively disappeared.

Now, in 2017, Christian has found a new space just south of the Miracle Mile on Pico Blvd. (more specifically right across the street from Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles on Pico) where he’ll bring the Echoes name back to life. He just received the keys to the place last week, but shows, mics ought to be happening very soon at what will now be called Echoes on Pico.

If things go at Echoes on Pico like they did with Echoes Under Sunset, expect to be hanging out near Pico and La Brea a lot more often.

If you’re wondering what people are doing at the edges of comedy in terms of experimenting with the form, challenging methods, etc., you might want to check out The Idiot Hub.

The Idiot Hub is an absurdist comedy collective, started by one John Gilkey, that likes to peel back every convention and trope of comedy that they can in favor of something silly and visceral. Starting off in 2013 as the ensemble known as Wet The Hippo, they have since expanded into other shows that you might have heard or seen around LA such such as The Murge and The Vivian Beckley Performing Arts Players and classes.

Typical performances will have a very sizable cast and aim to be more interactive, very physical, defy expectation, and be absent of a “fourth wall”. For instance, The Murge will have Gilkey pick and guide/heckle players into some sort of crazy bit as if a stand-up was directing a very otherworldly improv scene.

The Murge and The Vivian Beckley Performing Arts Players will be doing their next show at The Think Tank Gallery in Downtown LA as part of Drinkin’ Smokin’ & West Coastin’ on Saturday September 9th starting at 9PM.

Tickets are $17-$23 and you can (and should) get them here.
