TCB Debriefing 4/26-5/3: SF Sketchfest, Ian Abramson, Dave Merheje, Peabody Awards, Alex Edelman/Tonys, Keke Palmer/SZA, Scooby Doo, Chonga Girls, The Ugly Stepsister, Netflix, Jerry Seinfeld

May 3, 2024
News
alex edelman, chonga girls, dave merheje, ian abramson, jerry seinfeld, keke palmer, netflix, peabody awards, scooby doo, sf sketchfest, sza, ugly stepsister

1. SF Sketchfest, one of the biggest comedy festivals in the entire world, is now taking submissions for (pretty much) anything and everything for next year’s festival (Jan. 16th-Feb. 2nd). Find out more details, deadlines, submission fees, and more at sfsketchfest.com/get-involved.

2. Ian Abramson has told jokes in a shock collars controlled by the audience, challenged comedians to perform in an empty space while an audience watch a live feed from a remote location (and this was well before the pandemic), and even created his own DIY version of SNL when COVID-19 indefinitely postponed Saturday Night Live in 2020. With such daring feats, it’s almost unbelievable that Ian hasn’t done the simple, tried and true format of a comedy special (especially since Ian is one of the most original and purely silly comedians working today). Thank goodness for Heist, Ian’s first hour special that was just released by Comedy Dynamics, which, effectively is a greatest hits of the beautifully intricate absurdist comedy that Ian has perfected. Many a time there is a dual joy to be had from an Abramson bit in the mere spectacle of him being able to do it (or survive it in the case of the shock collar) and how surreally and deeply funny it really is. Suffice it to say that if you’re pining for the stand-up of 70s Steve Martin, get into everything Ian Abramson right now.

3. Dave Merheje continues his well deserved ascent in comedy with a killer Don’t Tell set. Per usual, Dave blurs the line between being off-the-cuff and doing material better than almost anyone since he’s so extremely present on stage. Please enjoy his set here.

4. The Career Achievement and Trailblazer Award for this year’s Peabody Awards are going to comedy with the honors going to the comedy legend Mel Brooks and potential comedy legend in the making Quinta Brunson (Variety).

5. Alex Edelman will be getting the T of EGOT covered very soon because of the brilliance of Just For Us.

6. Don’t be surprised if the upcoming Keke Palmer and SZA buddy comedy from Issa Rae is the buddy comedy you didn’t know you were waiting several years for (Deadline).

7. Though it’s far from a sure thing, Tinseltown is dead set on cashing in on live action versions of animated IP, hence another go at a live action Scooby Doo (Deadline).

8. Fingers crossed that The Chonga Girls will have the magical ingredient to make multicam work (it’s a long way to fall from Seinfeld to Big Bang Theory, FYI) as a concept again with their CBS project in development (Deadline)

9. If you were wondering if there was going to be some sort of gritty reboot of all the Disney canon following Winnie the Poo: Blood and Honey, indeed that is a thing. Just check the villain origin story vehicle that is The Ugly Stepsister coming as the first feature from Norwegian director Emilie Blichfeldt (Variety).

10. Netflix is sticking with their stars by giving specials to pretty their biggest stars (that don’t keep tripling down on problematic trans jokes) Ali Wong, Bert Kreischer, Deon Cole, Fortune Feimster, Gabriel Iglesias, Jo Koy and Michelle Buteau. Wonder if they’ll ever get back to their roots when started off with a not-yet-famous Ali Wong, Tom Segura, and Jen Kirkman.

11. We’ll leave you with this: Jerry Seinfeld is still not over not being able to do his iPhone bit at colleges?

Editor and Littlefield booker Gabe Henry not only loves both comedy and haikus, but saw that similarities between the precision of a joke and the 5-7-5 structure of a haiku and wanted to marry the two.

Gathering dozens and dozens of comedy’s very best and renowned including Aparna Nancherla, Roy Wood Jr., Maria Bamford, Bob Odenkirk, Janeane Garofalo, Jerry Seinfeld, Aubrey Plaza, Ziwe, Chris Gethard, and so many more, Eating Salad Drunk: Haikus for the Burnout Age by Comedy Greats gives you perfect morsels of comedic minimalism. Emily Flake even adds some more flavor to the haiku anthology with her wondrous illustrations.

Best of all, all author proceeds will go towards Comedy Gives Back, a crucial nonprofit for comedians, especially when it comes to mental health, medical, and crisis support resources.

You can and very much should get a copy of Eating Salad Drunk, available now wherever books are sold.

And Here Are Your Grammy Comedy Nominees for 2021

News

You might have seen that the nominees for the 2021 Grammys were announced this morning and, with that, there is just a handful of comedy folks that get the expressed distinction of being nominated for said Grammy. Usually, with how distribution of comedy specials work (i.e. most big time comedy specials get released as comedy albums somehow), comedy specials take up the bulk of the nomination slots and this year is no different (even though they were plenty of worthy stand-up albums that were released only as albums).

This year, the nominees for Best Comedy Album are:

Tiffany Haddish-Black Mitzvah
Patton Oswalt-I Love Everything
Jim Gaffigan-The Pale Tourist
Bill Burr-Paper Tiger
Jerry Seinfeld-23 Hours to Kill

All were specials on a big time streaming service and, four of out of the five were on Netflix. Still, Haddish and Oswalt offered up really uplifting specials and Burr got more introspective than he ever has with Paper Tiger.

Usually, the comedy category for The Grammys gets overshadowed by the dozens and dozens of other categories, but we’ll be watching closely for who wins on the CBS telecast of The Grammy Awards on Jan. 31st.

Just like the breezy rides that the series takes us through while Jerry Seinfeld and his guest hang out for the most successful version of comedians having coffee, we have coasted on to season 11 of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (that’s 2 more than Seinfeld FYI).

Per usual, Jerry has stacked line-up of guests including Eddie Murphy, Melissa Villaseñor, and Martin Short and, as far as we can see, Jerry’s winning formula here will keep going as long as he wants.

See it for yourself in this season’s trailer here.

Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee Season 10 Gets Full Trailer Done Up Like Vintage Commercial

June 22, 2018
Uncategorized

One underlying penchant of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee is Jerry Seinfeld’s love for classic ads. It makes sense given his affinity for cars of the past.

So, Jerry sells season 10 (coming to Netflix on July 6th) in this trailer as if it were an add for some home appliance in the 50s (even going so far as to do most of it up in black and white).

At this point, the freewheeling hangout/interview series knows it formula and how to execute quite well. Really, you can almost see that episodes with Kate McKinnon, Mulaney, Chappelle, Galifianakis will almost certainly deliver.

It’s a new episode of Between Two Ferns. You ought to know the drill by now for one of the Internet’s most beloved web series/anti-talk shows.

We will say that Galifianakis and co. take Jerry Seinfeld to task in pretty much every way possible (other than maybe torching a limited edition Porsche right in front of him). For a twist, there’s a cheeky contrast in tone with Cardi B.

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee Season 10 Coming Next Month with Chappelle, McKinnon, Minhaj Galifianakis, and More

Uncategorized
comedians in cars getting coffee, jerry seinfeld, netflix, season 10

It may be the most lavish way that the most successful comedians could hang out (and also be doing a show at the same time), but the 10th season of Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is coming next month on Netflix for a very good reason.

Simply, Jerry shows the inner workings of comedy in a way doesn’t dissect it like an in-depth documentary might. By doing so, he captures most of his guests at their most natural, even more so than if they’re the sort of comedian that is pretty much themselves on stage.

Season 10 of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee has a line-up of Jerry Lewis, Kate McKinnon, Ellen DeGeneres, Hasan Minhaj, Dana Carvey, Neil Brennan, Tracy Morgan, Brian Regan, Alec Baldwin, Zach Galifinakis, John Mulaney, and Dave Chappelle in various fancy, odd cars that you’ve probably never seen or heard of.

Look for the new episodes July 6th on Netflix.

Watch This Fascinating Colbert Interview of Jerry Seinfeld Wherein Seinfeld Changes His Mind About Listening to Bill Cosby Albums

If you’re a student of comedy, you’ll really enjoy this.

From the get go, Jerry Seinfeld is analyzing every minute detail of his appearance while dipping in and out of jokes and talking about his new Netflix special, Jerry Before Seinfeld.

Then, there’s a curious turn right smack dab in the middle where there’s a frank discussion about Bill Cosby, what he used to mean to Stephen Colbert and Seinfeld, and the notion of separating the artist from their art.

The interview finishes with a bit of back-and-forth with Colbert picking apart some very Seinfeld-ian observations.

Watch the interview in parts one and two here.

Jerry Before Seinfeld Trailer Reveals That Jerry Seinfeld’s Latest Special Will Be All About His Life Leading Into Becoming a Big Time Comedian

Jerry Seinfeld is a master of observational comedy. He honed it into such a form that it influenced generations of comedians for decades after his appearances on The Tonight Show.

In this vein, you might have noticed that Jerry very rarely gets autobiographical in his stand-up. That’s all about to change with his upcoming Netflix special that’s aptly titled Jerry Before Seinfeld, hinting at life before the landmark sitcom he starred in.

See for yourself how personal Jerry is going to get in the trailer here.

Look for Jerry Before Seinfeld to start streaming Tuesday, September 19th on Netflix.

Just announced today, SF will be getting another giant comedy festival in the summertime, specifically June 2nd-4th, brought to you by Comedy Central.

The first ever Clusterfest has a gigantic line-up of the sort proportions and depth that Comedy Central can summon. It’s also the flip of most big time music and arts festival in that it’s mostly comedy with a bit of music as opposed to there being a comedy tent and lots and lots and lots of music a la Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, etc. (Note: producers of both those festivals are involved here). See the line-up below or in this glitterbomb filled announcement video here.

Tickets/passes go on sale this Thursday, March 2nd here. They range from $199.50 earlybird pass-$599.50 VIP Pass.

Netflix Makes Another Big Deal for a Comedian, This Time, with Jerry Seinfeld that Includes Two Specials, Series Development, and Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Netflix is actually getting a really big 10th season of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (24 episodes) as well as getting exclusive rights to all of the episodes from the previous 9 seasons. The prospect of series development and two stand-up specials (and we’re sure a hefty payday) must have been too nice to pass up for Seinfeld who was sitting atop the Crackle hilltop.

If you’re keeping score, Netflix  nowhas Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, and Jerry Seinfeld on deck for comedy specials this year.

We’re only in January of 2017, but it seems Netflix has taken most of the cake when it comes to the big time comedy specials. In fact, would be hard to imagine them not being to able to have and eat their cake in this scenario.

Norm MacDonald Crams Himself Into an Old Porsche for Latest Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Jerry Seinfeld really has a knack, as Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee has shown, for getting big time comedians to reveal facets of their true selves while going on a luxurious day about whatever town Jerry’s in for that episode.

In the latest episode, Norm MacDonald shows pretty much all the facets of himself, from being subtle in his goofiness to razor sharp in his observations, when sitting down with Seinfeld for coffee.

Somehow, as Jerry even points out, there is something very appropriate about hanging with Norm in a rusty old car in the rain and it is, indeed, kind of perfect.

Jerry Seinfeld returns with his award winning comedian hang out series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, now in its ninth season.

From this trailer, you see that Kristen Wiig, Norm MacDonald, Lewis Black, Bob Einstein, Christoph Waltz, Cedric the Entertainer are all guests this season in Jerry Seinfeld’s ultra lavish hang-out show, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, now in its 9th season.

The new season starts streaming on Crackle on January 5th and new episodes will be released on Thursdays.

Do take note that 9 seasons is also the number of seasons that Seinfeld had before it concluded. We’re not sure if Jerry would stop just because of that, especially since this show is, as we said before, a really cool hang out between Seinfeld and his favorite funny people.

Last Night, Jerry Seinfeld Got Steve Martin Back on Stage to Do Stand-Up

February 19, 2016

(via Vulture)

It may be a one time thing or something that happens when a very specific alignment of the planets happens, but it still happened.

One of the greatest comedians of all time will always be Steve Martin. The fact that he’s still out and performing regularly, but doing so as a bluegrass musician rather than a comedian is a fact that many still have a hard time grasping with. Whether you got to see Martin when he was the biggest deal in comedy decades ago or got to fall in love with his comedy after the fact, the desire to see Martin on stage and do a set of stand-up comedy will probably never go away.

Apparently, off of losing a bet with Jerry Seinfeld, Martin opened up Seinfeld’s residency at The Beacon Theatre last night and according to Vulture, he has still got it (not that it should surprise any of you).

There’s no telling whether it will happen again or not, but let’s all just revel in the fact that it happened anyway and it did not disappoint.

This is 100%, unfiltered Will Ferrell and, as you might imagine, he’s really nice.

Normally, in interviews, Will Ferrell is usually trying to do some crazy, hilarious bit, be some sort of character, etc. When cruising with Jerry Seinfeld around LA in a Plymouth Roadrunner, Ferrell simply is himself, hanging with Jerry, and, well, doing a few bits here and there (nothing like when he’s on late night).

Of course, we’d all be, even if you don’t agree with President Obama’s politics. Still, chalk up another great chat, kind of like his episode of WTF, with the Commander-in-Chief that doesn’t have an agenda other than being “about nothing”.

Also, this is probably the first time that Jerry and his guest don’t go to a diner or coffee shop because, well… the POTUS has other things going on that he needs to attend to.
