Pick of the Day: Everything is Terrible! (in LA & NYC) 2/3 & 2/26

December 31, 2021
News
bell house, brooklyn, everything is terrible, experimental comedy, nyc comedy, performance art, video art

The last two years have been some of the worst on record for everyone alive right now (if they are not actually, in fact, the very worst). The hours are ticking away in America to greet 2022 and the normal sort of routine fanfare that comes with New Year’s Eve is, at this point, unsurprisingly not at the fever pitch that it has been in, perhaps, 2014.

With that in mind, perhaps the thing to look forward to is video and performance art collective Everything Is Terrible! going on tour with slicing, dicing, and mashing up all the weirdest bits of DVD and VHS ephemera they could possible find into a hilarious, mind-bending, absurdist dream scape. This specific outing by EIT, The Kidz Klub Tour, will be grinding up the best of media from decades past that was engineered for kids, but has not aged all that well.

Also, above everything else, isn’t it fitting to look forward to something called Everything Is Terrible (though rest assured the show will be an amazing trip fantastic through the overlooked nostalgia of our youth and not literally terrible). EIT will be stopping through both LA and NYC this February (so, it’ll likely still happen).

Everything Is Terrible’s The Kidz Klub Tour will hit the Lodge Room in LA on Thurs. Feb. 3rd at 8PM PT with tickets for $22 and the Bell House on Sat. Feb. 26th at 7:30PM ET & 10:30PM ET with tickets for $20 a pop. Go get them now while everything still feels terrible and make yourself, consequently, feel a little less terrible.

Pick of the Day: Helltrap Nightmare x Nolympics x LA Tenants Union: Food Not Rent Fundraiser 11/13

Famed horror comedy troupe Helltrap Nightmare did so much leading up to this most recent election in support of local candidates and organizations. Thankfully, their work is continuing on with intersecting affecting change on a local level and putting on extravaganzas of live-stream comedy fundraisers.

This Friday, Nov. 13th, Helltrap Nightmare is partnering with LA local orgs NOLYMPICS and LA Tenants Union to support the Food Not Rent fund for their latest show. Rental assistance for Angelenos has simply not been enough during this pandemic, especially with the end of it continuing to be uncertain and this is great way to give relief to many vulnerable folks at this time.

Slated to perform for this Food Not Rent live-stream are: John Early, Kate Berlant, Everything Is Terrible!, Julio Torres, True Anon’s Bruce Belden, Liz Franczak, Seth Bogart, Jeremy Levick, Rajat Suresh,  Nick Ciarelli, Brad Evans, Claywoman, Ian Sweet, Naomidrome, Lou Wilson, Thu Tran, Anna Seregina, Mister Wallace, Drac and the Swamp Rats, and more with hosts Meg Stalter and Sarah Squirm!

You can get access to the live-stream with a donation of anywhere from $5-$420 or more to the Food Not Rent fund. Do so here and make your Friday that much better.

The satirical video/performance art collective Everything Is Terrible has been bringing you the best in recontextualizing the worst in pop culture for several years now and are stepping up their game by opening very own Everything Is Terrible Store deep in East LA (i.e. true East LA and not this noveau-Eastside LA label of Highland Park/Echo Park/etc.).

EIT! is the video and performance collective known for their Jerry Maguire VHS collection (and Echo Park Video Store installation), epic psychedelic video compilations, and live shows featuring beautiful and whimsical costumes and puppets! Now they finally have a permanent home here in LA, where they can experiment with new installations, videos, and performances, as well as showcase limited edition Everything Is Terrible! apparel, accessories, and more!

They’re throwing a big shindig to celebrate their opening on July 6th at 8PM in case your interest is peaked. Their new address is 754 S. Atlantic Blvd. (note: told you it was deep in East LA).

If there ever was a year to celebrate the 10th birthday of something called Everything Is Terrible, it’d be this year.

Next week, join the satirical video art collective to mark the occasion with a big live show at The Regent. Tickets are $20-$24 and you can (and should) get tickets here.

Comedy Sucks, the comedy variety show that features satirical video art work by the one and only Grimy Ghost, is celebrating one year! Other contemporaries of Grimy Ghost, Everything Is Terrible and Vic Berger will also be there giving you as much repurposed, mutated pop-culture mash-ups as you can handle in addition to the great comedy stylings of Todd Glass, Brody Stevens, Howard Kremer, Jamie Loftus, and Brodie Reed.

Tickets are on sale here, but we’ve got a pair of tickets that you could win if you enter here: http://thecomedybureau.dola.com/giveaways

A Video Store Comprised of Over 14,000 Jerry Maguire VHS Tapes Exclusively to Open in Echo Park

For several years, the satirical video art collective known as Everything Is Terrible has collected every single copy of Jerry Maguire on video cassette tape that they could get their hands on.

Their efforts have led them to collecting over 14,000 copies of the film Jerry Maguire which will now be used to create a pop-up “video store” exhibit at iam8bit in Echo Park. It’ll be like the Blockbuster brick-and-mortar stores of yore, but with only Jerry Maguire lining every shelf. The mere idea of this is ridiculously absurd and fun while also offering much more to dissect than other large scale art projects in LA like that giant rock outside of LACMA.

This is only the start as a permanent #JerryPyramid in the desert being built is a goal that this exhibit is ultimately shooting for.

Through the two week run, there will be live events including comedy from Kate Berlant, DJ Douggpound, Greg Barris, and, of course, some video mischief from Everything Is Terrible.

Start looking for The Jerry Maguire Store on January 13th.

Awful curated VHS footage plus stand-up comedians attempt to prove the shows title wrong. With that line-up, the odds are in their favor we think.

You can and should get your tickets here.

What We Were Witness to at Everything Is Terrible & Cinefamily’s “Everything Is Festival”

Powerviolence throwing toilet paper at crowd during Fox ADHD Pizza Party

Last week, we got to attend a bit of Everything Is Terrible and Cinefamily’s Everything Is Festival bringing you comedy from the YouTube generation, had a wonderful time, and noticed these things in particular below/after the break:

1) There is a whole new subculture/division/category of comedy that we saw at Everything Is Festival with the supercut, Vine videos (there was an entire panel on Vine that was really great and a lot of people showed up to), video mash-ups, skateboarding-comedy troupe Powerviolence (throwing TP at crowd and doing a boy hunks of Instagram competition), vintage video games, an entire musical from Comedy Bang! Bang! and a general sense of appreciating things that were, at one time, considered awful now in a brand new context as something hilarious.

2) Sitting around watching weird YouTube videos has kind of grown up as people were cheering for a lot of specific clips during video mash ups as if they were a band’s classic singles leading us to the conclusion that the 1990s were a long time ago.

3) While some of you might want to write off a lot of this is as niche comedy or some hipster BS, the fans of everyone in this festival showed up in droves, lining themselves around the block down Fairfax and were pretty thrilled the whole way through sans any irony (i.e. if glowsticks were thrown in the crowd and they were, people grabbed them and started dancing).

4) Everything Is Festival could be described as a comedy festival of tomorrow for the new territory they delve into comedy wise, but we’d say use the term tomorrow in a much more literal sense than a few years away.

Everything Is Festival at Cinefamily Will Mostly Be Livestreamed

Many of you, for many reasons, won’t be able to attend what looks to be an amazing Everything Is Festival that’s already under way. You don’t have the dough to go or perhaps you don’t live anywhere near LA, etc.

Well, luckily, Cinefamily’s live streaming a lot of the festival, especially the live portions including Comic Relief Zero w/Tony Clifton, Comedy Bang! Bang! The Musical, Fox ADHD’s Pizza Party, Show and Tell with Maria Bamford, Mondo Public Access, and more.

So check the schedule for shows and times to watch because you don’t want to recreate what happened by just reading tweets about it.
