A Very Special Episode of The Green Room with Paul Provenza, Live from Paul’s Very Own Backyard

September 12, 2023
News
andy andrist, annie lederman, doug stanhope, henry phillips, kristine levine, paul provenza, the green room

Even though it was over a decade ago since it first premiered and ran for two seasons, The Green Room with Paul Provenza still resonates with any and all comedy fans/nerds/obsessives that come across it. The premise was simply to be a fly on the wall for all those “green room” conversations that happened backstage at a comedy club or theater where some one-of-a-kind comedy gold was spun. During its run, Paul moderated conversations between amazing panels that include Bo Burnham, Marc Maron, Kathy Griffin, Eddie Izzard, Kumail Nanjiani, and more.

All that said, it has been awhile since those magical two seasons aired and folks have had a chance to visit The Green Room with Paul Provenza. Well, that while has come to a close with Paul starting to do shows in his very home, dubbed The Green House, (he “blames” us here at TBC for his backyard becoming a venue, FYI) and sometimes, that includes special, live, outdoor versions of The Green Room, produced by the original pairing of Provenza and Babs Romen (and, full disclosure, we have a hand in running the 1s and 2s too), . If you haven’t had a chance to see one of these special Green Rooms, they are magical.

To show you why The Green Room is so special, here is the latest happening of it that gathers many comedians who are sexual assault/abuse survivors, namely Andy Andrist, Annie Lederman, and Kristine Levine along with Doug Stanhope and Henry Phillips for a truly unbelievable conversation about processing some of the darkest trauma into comedy for both inner peace and hope and solidarity for others.

*TRIGGER WARNING for those sensitive to the topic and discussion of sexual assault/abuse/rape as this conversation dives explicitly into survivor experiences and humor.*

Pick of the Day: Doug Stanhope (in LA) 3/15 & 3/16

At this point, history will look back at Doug Stanhope as a foundational and influential comedian and what he has done for the art form and keeping its edge thoroughly sharp and actually speaking truth to power while being downright hysterical. It should almost go without saying that you should take up every single possible chance to see Doug live any time that you can.

In LA and NYC, that’s an incredibly rare happening, but it does happen every few years. Lucky for Angelenos, Doug is playing The Main Room at The Comedy Store this week, Tues 3/15 & Wed. 3/16 at 8PM PT. The Tuesday show is already sold out, but there are limited tickets available for Wed. for $45 (+ 2 drink min.).

Go get them here if they’re not sold out already (or wait at The Comedy Store for stand by because Stanhope, again, is truly worth it)

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 79: Paul Provenza & Comedy of Future Past

One of comedy’s most respected minds, Paul Provenza, joins in for this week’s TCB Field Report to go down the rabbit hole of the art form of comedy. Paul and TCB’s Jake Kroeger explore so many different angles, different generations, and different perspectives that they ended zipping through the running time of a Marvel movie. Truly, a fascinating conversation that weaves through the new SNL hires and Just For Laughs partnering with Moontower and explores the philosophy of comedy and what many people are missing out that’s coming up because they aren’t looking to the past at Brother Theodore or Charlie Barnett. Also, Paul discusses his groundbreaking work with Andy Andrist, both in documentary (that he’s still working on) and comedy special form with Andy’s Last Shot, The Green Room with Paul Provenza on Showtime, and Set List: Improvised Stand Up.

Follow Paul @paulprovenza and Set List @setlistshow on Twitter and IG and watch Andy Andrist’s Last Shot at naturejack.com.

Watch Doug Stanhope Talk About Getting Death Threats in Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11

September 7, 2021
News
comedy after 9/11, documentary, doug stanhope, too soon
Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11, as we’ve said before, is a crucial documentary not only for comedy, but art and free expression overall. Directors Nick Fituri Scown and Julie Seabaugh have assembled a thoroughly exhaustive timeline in said doc that displays the progression of one of the most horrific tragedies of our lifetimes in regards to the art form of comedy.
The idea of making 9/11 jokes was more than just questionable territory for a long time, no matter what your angle was. You can see how testy it used to be with this exclusive clip of Doug Stanhope talking about how he would get death threats for speaking out and joking about 9/11 when he did in this exclusive clip of Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11.
Look for Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11 to premiere this Wed. Sept. 8th at 9PM PT/ET on Vice TV. There will also be an exclusive LA screening at Dances With Films on Saturday, September 11th, 2021 (the 20th anniversary of 9/11). You can and should go get your tickets for it here if you’re in LA this weekend.

Descriptions such as honest, dark, and unflinching are often give to Doug Stanhope’s comedy. Much of that is due to his upbringing, specifically with his mother who imparted as much comedy history to him as she did with life experience gained from bringing Doug to an AA meeting.

Digging Up Mother: A Love Story is the story of how Stanhope said goodbye to his singular mother as she came to a point where she didn’t want to live anymore. The sweetness of a sincere valediction gets outfitted in Stanhope’s unfiltered sense of humor for a book that will undoubtedly take you through that wide range of emotions that comedy is capable of encompassing.

You can get your copy of Digging Up Mother: A Love Story now.

The one and only Doug Stanhope has teamed up with indie game developers This Is Pop to make an app for those of us that want to engage in that thing known as “fitness” but aren’t really on board with many of the current and popular methods of doing so.

Cue unFIT, which tracks underachievements. Rather than how many steps you took in a day, it has the option to track lifting your controller, game console or TV, standing in a long line, etc.

Here’s Stanhope himself showing off the unFIT lifstyle.

If you’re done getting angry at your Fitbit, you can download unFit now for $4.99 from Apple’s App Store.

I just typed “The End” into my book and while I know that it really isn’t, It’s a milestone that calls for a cocktail.

It’s been years since Doug Stanhope’s last book, but we’re glad to hear that Stanhope is hard at work writing his memoir that’s due out next year.

8 days til deadline of book. Just spent 2 hours watching Youtube scorpion vs centipede v spider v beetle v etc. 8 days left.

Currently titled One Funny Mother, it instantly recalls his heart wrenching and hysterical stories about his mother that found their way into Doug’s stand-up recently.

It’s on pre-order now on Amazon and set for an Apr. 12th, 2016 release. You should definitely put your order in for a copy even though there’s no cover art yet because we’re pretty sure Stanhope’s memoir will be that good.

Doug Stanhope Set to Write A Memoir

Well, you know this is going to be good.

Doug Stanhope is now set to write a memoir covering his relationship with his mother. If you’ve listened to or watched Stanhope’s latest special Beer Hall Putsch, you know that this will probably be as an unfiltered, darkly comedic collection of personal tales as Stanhope has ever told about his mom.

However, you’re going to have to wait until a year from now in Apr. 2016 for its publication. Still, we’re guessing it’s going to be worth the wait.

The sequel to Henry Phillips’ Punching The Clown has moved forward very quietly. We heard that it was going into production and then, just over two weeks ago, Phillips himself tweeted that it was “in the can”.

Punching the Clown 2 is now in the can. Look out for it next year! pic.twitter.com/joR73mq8xI

— Henry Phillips (@Henlips) November 25, 2014

So, not only do we have to look forward towards a release, perhaps, sometime next year, but, the cast for Still Punching The Clown is pretty damn great. J.K. Simmons, who you probably saw get sociopathic in Whiplash, Sarah Silverman, Jim Jefferies, Tig Notaro, Doug Stanhope, Mike Judge, Drunk History’s Derek Waters, Nikki Glaser, and more are all being featured in the film.

Hopefully, the news of a release date and the actual release date itself will come soon.

Yet, for those of you who don’t a Netflix subscription, for whatever reason, will be able to pick up a copy as an album on Sept. 17th in two weeks or as a DVD in November.

The waiting may already be long, but just Google what beer hall putsch is, if you don’t already know, and be entertained solely at the possibility of what Stanhope has to say about that.
