Pick of the Day: Bro V Wade: Funny Dudes. Raising Cash. For Abortion. (in NYC) 5/22

March 8, 2022
News
abortion access front, bell house, brooklyn, comedy benefit, dave hill, david cross, dean obeidallah, international women's day, john fugelsang, jon glaser, josh gondelman, joyelle nicole johnson, nyc comedy, reproductive rights, women's history month

Far be it from us to point out a live comedy show with just mostly men on the line-up on International Women’s Day and during Women’s History Month. That said, if the renowned and celebrated men on said line-up were donating their time to raise money for abortion access and reproductive rights via the Lizz Winstead (co-creator of The Daily Show) org  Abortion Access Front and had the fantastic Joyelle Nicole Johnson hosting the whole shin dig, that is a different story.

It’s actually the story of the upcoming comedy charity benefit event Bro V. Wade: Funny Dudes. Raising Cash. For Abortion set for Sun. May 22nd at The Bell House in Brooklyn at 7:30PM ET. The likes of David Cross, Dave Hill, Jon Glaser, John Fugelsang, Josh Gondelman, and Dean Obeidallah are billed and we wouldn’t be surprised if there were more special guests TBA.

FYI: Founded in 2015, Abortion Access Front is a team of comedians, writers and producers that uses humor to destigmatize abortion and expose the extremist anti-choice forces working to destroy access to reproductive rights in all 50 states.

Tickets are $40 and, if you’re in and around NYC, you need to get them here.

News
bell house, brooklyn, hari kondabolu, nyc, nyc comedy, Wajahat Ali

As the world opens up yet again (and we sincerely hope it sticks this time around), many folks are re-acclimatizing themselves to the thing that so many of us took for granted, talking to one another. In this reboot of our conversational and empathy skills, we hope that we’ll be better this time around.

In that spirit, you should watch and enjoy the upcoming conversation between brilliant comedian Hari Kondabolu and writer Wajahat Ali about Ali’s book GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM: AND OTHER HELPFUL RECOMMENDATIONS ON HOW TO BECOME AMERICAN. Pick of the Day: One Liner Madness (in NYC) 3/31

January 25, 2022
News
backfat variety, bell house, jokes, one-liner jokes, stand up comedy

These days, it would seem the art of the one-liner jokes has, largely, been relegated to telling “dad jokes” ironically or torturing your friends with schmaltzy wordplay that might just be “so bad, it’s good”. That said, there are true artisans of comedy that take pride in their skill in which they can twist syntax and diction into a streamlined, fat free one-liner joke.

BackFat Variety is going to find who the best of the best of these artisanal comedians are with their One Liner Madness at the very end of March. 64 comedians, a la another more famous March Madness, will go head-to-head in a bracketed, single elimination competition to see which of NYC’s finest has the very best one-liner jokes at their disposal.

Don’t miss out on this very special tourney on Thurs. Mar. 31st at 8PM ET at The Bell House in Brooklyn. Tickets are $10 right now. Go get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: Drunk Black History (in NYC) 2/25

January 17, 2022
News
andre perry, bell house, black history month, brandon collins, brooklyn, errin haines, felix rodriguez, gordon baker bone, nyc comedy

As today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, one ought to be reflecting on the past and where we’ve gotten to in the present moment as well as celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

So, with that in mind, we’d like to highlight the amazing live historical comedy show, Drunk Black History, that’s on Feb. 25th. Brandon Collins and Gordon Baker-Bone preside over the a line-up of marvelous NYC folks attempting to tell the story of renowned Black heroes in history while undeniably three sheets to the wind.

This particular edition of Drunk Black History will feature Felix Rodriguez, Andre Perry, and Errin Haines and convene at Brooklyn’s Bell House at 9PM ET (Doors 8:30PM ET) on Fri. Feb. 25th. Tickets are $20 right now and there will also be live-stream access available for $10. Go get your tickets now!

Pick of the Day: Everything is Terrible! (in LA & NYC) 2/3 & 2/26

December 31, 2021
News
bell house, brooklyn, everything is terrible, experimental comedy, nyc comedy, performance art, video art

The last two years have been some of the worst on record for everyone alive right now (if they are not actually, in fact, the very worst). The hours are ticking away in America to greet 2022 and the normal sort of routine fanfare that comes with New Year’s Eve is, at this point, unsurprisingly not at the fever pitch that it has been in, perhaps, 2014.

With that in mind, perhaps the thing to look forward to is video and performance art collective Everything Is Terrible! going on tour with slicing, dicing, and mashing up all the weirdest bits of DVD and VHS ephemera they could possible find into a hilarious, mind-bending, absurdist dream scape. This specific outing by EIT, The Kidz Klub Tour, will be grinding up the best of media from decades past that was engineered for kids, but has not aged all that well.

Also, above everything else, isn’t it fitting to look forward to something called Everything Is Terrible (though rest assured the show will be an amazing trip fantastic through the overlooked nostalgia of our youth and not literally terrible). EIT will be stopping through both LA and NYC this February (so, it’ll likely still happen).

Everything Is Terrible’s The Kidz Klub Tour will hit the Lodge Room in LA on Thurs. Feb. 3rd at 8PM PT with tickets for $22 and the Bell House on Sat. Feb. 26th at 7:30PM ET & 10:30PM ET with tickets for $20 a pop. Go get them now while everything still feels terrible and make yourself, consequently, feel a little less terrible.

Pick of the Day: The Jackie and Laurie Show LIVE (in NYC) 1/16

December 1, 2021
News
bell house, jackie kashian, laurie kilmartin, live podcast, ny comedy

At this point, The Jackie & Laurie Show is a comedy institution for how insight it gives into every facet of comedy throughout the decades and the present through the lens of two of best comedians working today, Jackie Kashian and Laurie Kilmartin. Also, their friendship through the pod is one of the most dynamic and entertaining we’ve listened to (no matter how chippy it might get).

So, any live edition of the pod that always features Jackie, Laurie, and some splendid handpicked comedians is a must see and NYC is going to get a round of Jackie & Laurie at the top of 2022. That’s right, come Sun. Jan. 16th at 7:30PM ET, Kashian and Kilmartin will take to Brooklyn’s hallowed comedy stage, The Bell House.

That might seem like a ways away, but don’t waste time in getting tickets now, which also would make for a great holiday gift. They’re going for $20 right and you can (and very, very much should) go get them here.

We often get asked, “Who is next in comedy?” or “Who are the folks that are about to break; the comedians that we need to see before they blow up?”

Well, there always around and they’re always performing, but they are not often on the very same line-up.

That said, every once in awhile, such marvelous institutions like the Bell House in Brooklyn will gather together their favorites seasoned performers that deserve that shine of being on such a coveted stage. That night will be Newcomers Night at The Bell House on Wed. Nov. 17th at 8PM ET and have a plentiful spread of NYC’s best that are getting their official Bell House debut.

That’ll include:

Ziwe, the icon of IG Live turned iconic disruptor in late night/sketch on premium television, is doing an exclusive show at Brooklyn’s comedy haven, The Bell House.

We shouldn’t have explain any further for you to buy tickets, but, just in case, we will continue.

Pop Show will have Ziwe gather her favorite comedians in the city to perform their very own original pop songs as well as “pop presentations” to exude the most pop-stardom possible in one live comedy show. On the bill thus far is Jen Goma and DJ Donwill, but more will be announced very, very soon.

Pop Show with Ziwe will take place, iconically, on Oct. 8th at 7:30PM ET at The Bell House. Tickets are $25/proof of vaccination required (and they will sell out). Go get them here right now.

Pick of the Day: Hannah Einbinder (in NYC) 11/5

July 22, 2021
News
bell house, brooklyn, hannah einbinder, nyc, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

In LA, pretty much all of Hannah Einbinder‘s headlining dates have sold out. You might get a chance to see her here and there on a plethora of shows here and there, but you won’t get to bare witness to the full breadth of full length set, unless you snagged a ticket for one of her Dynasty Typewriter dates, for awhile (probably in October).

That said, if you’re in NYC, you still have a shot at catching the late show of Hannah Einbinder’s evening at The Bell House on Fri. Nov. 5th. Already, the 7:30PM ET show has sold out, but you can still get tickets for the 10PM ET show at $20 a pop. Please don’t miss your chance to see Hannah live, who will be such a delightful conceptual, yet still very personal comedy surprise for all of you whether you’ve seen her on Hacks or not.

So, go get your tickets already.

The first ever Vulture Festival is coming this May in NYC and they’ve programmed quite the line-up for their evening of comedy at The Bell House including Billy Eichner, Mike Birbiglia, Chelsea Peretti, Abbi Jacobson, Ilana Glazer, and Jessica Williams.

We hope that Billy Eichner does Billy On The Street-esque bits throughout the evening, wandering throughout the audience.
