The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 134: Curtis Cook & Being Absolutely Clear

October 19, 2022
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
curtis cook, naked gun, the daily show

Curtis Cook, despite his own protestations and sometimes self-identifying as petty in own comedy, is truly one of the most thoughtful comedians around on top of being so damn hysterical and writing for several hit shows, the latest of which just happens to be This Fool on Hulu. This week’s Comedy Bureau Field Report goes into the ethos of comedy and the relationship between one’s intended joke and how it’s received and how there’s no magical balance for all of it.

Also, “hot” takes on The Daily Show pondering a trio of hosts, a new Naked Gun, and more.

Pick of the Day: An Hour in 60 Minutes with “Ian” Abramson (in LA) 10/24

October 19, 2022
News
glendale, glendale room, ian abramson, live comedy, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

Ian Abramson started off COVID-19 lockdown by livestreaming his own solo-run version of SNL from the woods. Even that isn’t that the wildest thing that Ian has hilariously done for comedy. He’s worn a shock collar on Conan that he let be operated by an audience member and done post trial interviews for Gary Busey’s Pet Judge. Yep, that’s all real, which is part of the marvel of Ian’s comedy being absurd, brilliant, and flawlessly executed no matter how unbelievable it all might seem when it’s happening.

So, do not miss him or a facsimile played by Ian called “Ian” doing an hour, which stretches, as advertised, 60 minutes at The Glendale Room this coming Monday, Oct. 24th at 9PM. Of all the unforgettable nights of comedy you could get into, this might rank among the most unforgettable.

Tickets are only $4 right now. Go get them ASAP here.

Andrew Bujalski Looks to Keep It Delightfully, Quietly Strange with “There There” Trailer

October 18, 2022
News
andrew bujalski, there there, trailer

Computer Chess and Support The Girls have arguably put Andrew Bujalski on the map as a preeminent indie filmmaker even though his films are devoid of any sort big premise or pops, bangs, whizzes. The uncanny touch of nuance he has with his stellar casts (it was truly a marvel to see Regina King in something as offbeat as Support The Girls) and how much humor he can draw out of the quieter moments in life is astounding.

His latest film, There There aims to further cement his comedy auteur stamp with conversations between several people through FaceTime/Zoom, presumably because of COVID-19 lockdown. It won’t just be a bunch of floating heads or solo monologues to the camera like HBO’s Coastal Elites, but rather capturing lonesome folks (that just happened to include Jason Schwartzman, Molly Gordon,  and capturing the absurdity/beauty of trying to stay connected to humanity via your laptop’s front facing camera.

Take a gander for yourself with There There‘s official trailer here, then look for its release on Nov. 18th.

Pick of the Day: Mega the Podcast (in NYC) 11/12

October 18, 2022
News
greg hess, holly laurent, live podcast, mega the podcast, nyc comedy

The idea of faith and spirituality are things that have been shaken to their core over the last three years (or probably a lot longer if we’re being honest). Thus, Mega the Podcast has been both one of the most soothing and simultaneously hysterical podcasts streaming today with their pitch perfect poking and dissecting of megachurches around the country and the world.

Greg Hess and Holly Laurent play pastors at the fictional mega church, Twin Hills, claiming fervently that their bringing the word of god to their flock with a “tiny family feel”. Their send-up of the some of the most egregious there is when it comes to organized religion is a great comedic reminder that you’re not, to co-opt a celebrated christian text, “left behind”.

Greg and Holly will be bringing their prickly gospel to Caveat in NYC on Sat. Nov. 12th at 7PM and everyone in and around the NYC area should not miss out. Even if you’re not in the NYC area, you’ll be able to livestream the whole thing for $10. In person tickets are going for $25 and we highly suggest you go get them right now right here.

Danny Jolles Moves the Comedy Special (and Society) Forward with “You Choose”

October 17, 2022
News

It’s a well worn notion that subjectivity is an unfortunate inevitability when it comes to watching comedy. There are all of your experiences, beliefs, values, etc. that you carry with you when you watch someone tell jokes for an hour and that unavoidably colors your opinion of them. In many ways, you don’t have a choice about what you find funny. It’s just a guttural response, which is why it comedy is mostly such a personal endeavor, both for audience and comedian.

But, what if you did have a choice in the matter? What if you could choose the type of joke you wanted to hear? What if the same comedian told those two diametrically opposed comedic viewpoints? What if you were to watch said special from one Danny Jolles and learn that we have more in common than we don’t and reaffirm the overarching communal aspect of comedy?

Danny Jolles indeed did make a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure comedy special, truly the first of its kind with his sophomore hour, You Choose: The Full Interactive Comedy Special. Doug Benson released same versions of an hour on Smug Life in 2012, one recorded while he was completely sober and one recorded in his normal state of being functionally high (unsurprisingly, Benson is more lucid while high and has been for several years). You only got one choice there and it was pretty obvious. With Danny’s new double(?) special, each topic that Danny cleverly covers offers up a choice (via thumbnail links to unlisted videos on YouTube) of whether you want to hear Danny’s take whether for or against, new or old, or pro- or anti- David Blaine. Jolles really upped the ante from just doing his last special in six different venues to reimagining the form of a comedy special altogether.

One of many Jolles’ strengths is his writing and Danny put in the tireless work to actually develop thoroughly great bits on either side of the issue. That’s especially true when it comes to the David Blaine chunk where he spans the spectrum of thinking he’s the “best human we have” to a “psychopath”. It’s a testament to Danny’s comedic prowess that his comedic persona/lens/truth all stays in tact despite offering supposedly different bits.

The ironically unifying takeaway for You Choose comes in the ending, of which there is only one ending: Let people live their lives. The illusion of the binary that is the core dynamic of You Choose comes undone with Danny hoping that we keep the choices set around infinite and, perhaps, venturing outside of yourself to find that there might be things better than what you’ve known and loved for years and years and years.

With all that said, you shouldn’t take our word for it and go down the You Choose rabbit hole yourself, especially since it’s all streaming free on YouTube on Don’t Tell Comedy’s YouTube Channel.

Pick of the Day: Hannah Einbinder & Friends (in LA) 10/30

October 14, 2022
News
coronet theater, hacks, hannah einbinder, la comedy, largo, stand up comedy

Doing your own “& Friends” show at Largo at the Coronet Theatre, not unlike getting your name on the wall of The Comedy Store, is one of the highest echelons you can get in the vast LA comedy scene. It’s rarefied air especially since Largo doesn’t run 7 nights a week or maintain any sort of farm system for people to work your way up. You just have to be good enough for Flanagan to hear of you on top of raising your own profile pretty high in comedy and then fit into the rustic, revered auditorium on La Cienega.

With all of that in mind, Hannah Einbinder is about to have her very first “& friends” at show at Largo as she has had a trailblazing last few years between her own stand-up and the award winning darling that is Hacks. Einbinder heartily worked her through the LA scene own her myriad of conceptual bits and very introspective observations and it’s truly something special to see her graduate to one of LA’s most sought after stages for comedians.

So, go put down $46 here to see her Largo “& Friends” debut on Sun. Oct. 30th at 8PM PT.

Give Donald Glover an Award Right Now for Playing Mr. Chocolate on the Latest Episode of Atlanta

October 13, 2022
News
atlanta, donald glover, mr chocolate, parody, satire, tyler perry

The first season of Atlanta saw acclaim and awards heaped on Donald Glover and company and rightfully so. The shape-shifting comedy series has broken so much new ground with form, narrative, tone, etc. on top of being one of the sharpest satires ever, when it comes to the black experience. It’s almost a modern day version of Ralph Ellison’s long celebrated Invisible Man, but done through the lens of a stealthily absurd comedy series.

Now, in its fourth and final season, Glover is still showing he has plenty more up his sleeve to surprise us all. This latest episode “Work Ethic!” might be one of the series’ very best moments as Donald dons a fat suit, a robe, and a coffee mug of grits to play Mr. Chocolate, a thinly veiled dig at the entertainment titan that is Tyler Perry.

Perry’s success has proven controversial as much of his work wheels and deals in broad stereotypes of both black and white people, but is often free from criticism due to his commitment to employing so many black creatives and laborers on all of his productions based in Atlanta. From top to bottom, every bit of the Tyler Perry subgenre (including the Madea franchise and every other property that begins its title with “Tyler Perry’s”) is searingly dissected and sent up in this episode in “Chocolateland” (a parody of real life Tyler Perry Studios). Glover shines a floodlight on the notion that the studio’s efforts are so much “for the culture” that provide enough cache to make up for its exploitative content and practices.

Leave it to Donald Glover to play a character that seems half Tyler Perry, half The Architect from The Matrix Trilogy in such damningly hysterical piercing of the mythos propping up Perry. Without question, it is and will be one of the funniest performances on a screen of any size this year. As said above, give it awards ASAP.

Enjoy a bit of that performance here, then watch the whole episode on Hulu now.

Pick of the Day: Gayme Show (in LA) 11/16

To The Comedy Bureau’s faithful readers, you’re probably well acquainted with our love for Dave Mizzoni and Matt Rogers comedy game show masterpiece, GAYME SHOW! The testing of straight men’s knowledge of gay culture as adjudicated by Mizzoni and Rogers is amongst the most hysterical game shows we’ve ever seen (and deserved a bigger, better platform than Quibi) and we make sure to always let you know when and where it’s happening in LA and NYC.

Thus, we’re here to tell you that the latest Gayme Show is happening in LA next month, Wed. Nov. 16th at The Regent in DTLA at 7PM. Who the straights are that will be challenged have yet to be announced, but do not wait to get to see who they might be before you get tickets. It just might sell out before then.

They exist on either extreme of LA County and one man books both of them, Richard Barrett. We talk to Richard about how exactly he pulls that off and what goes into bringing stand-up to two very different cities as well as giving deserving comics as much work as he can.

Pick of the Day: All Fantasy Everything (in NYC) 12/16

October 12, 2022
News
all fantasy everything, bell house, brooklyn, david gborie, ian karmel, live podcast, nyc comedy, sean jordan

One of the most fun podcasts around, All Fantasy Everything, is back, out-on-the-road, in-person bringing non-sports fantasy draft joy to the whole world. Ian Karmel, Sean Jordan, and David Gborie have really made comedy gold out of pondering what your absolute favorite things are within hyper specific (and sometimes hilariously vague) niches. You have a rollicking, knee-slapping time over the debate of over the Taco Bell drive thru menu or best band names if they weren’t a band and the added bonus of knowing yourself that much better.

There are hundreds of episodes for you to binge on if you’re the uninitiated, but there are two very special live episodes coming to the Bell House in Brooklyn on Fri. Dec. 16th. The early show already sold out, but there’s a late show with tickets still available at $30.57. Make it an early holiday gift and go buy them here before they sell out.

Triangle of Sadness Will Rightfully Be Comedy’s Representative This Awards Season

October 11, 2022
News
triangle of sadness

For the majority of comedy on the big, small, and phone screen, the prospect of some type of major award that isn’t specifically delineated between comedy or drama seems a horizon too far to reach. Thus, a divide between indie art house fair that self identifies as comedy or the genre blend of dramedy and pretty much everything else comedic has existed for several years and seemingly will continue to persist. The Favourite, In The Loop, and Grand Budapest Hotel are the sort of fare that The Oscars actually take seriously as opposed to the movie version of What We Do In The Shadows.

There’s no easy solution to solve that problem as distribution deals and marketing often are the true fates in charge of the entertainment industry. However, Triangle of Sadness, the latest work from a true modern day comedy auteur Ruben Östlund, is a hysterical, searing takedown of the privilege of wealth and beauty, almost picking up from the season finale of The White Lotus and then going to the nth degree + 1 with its chaos.

Östlund’s pedigree precedes him with critically acclaimed works of Force Majeure and The Square winning the Palme D’Or at Cannes a few years ago. Masculinity and the pretension of the art world were respectively his targets then, but he savagely goes in, almost with no remorse, on the lifestyles of the rich and famous with such stinging precision here and never lets up. There is an almost ballet-like quality to the pandemonium of Captain’s Dinner scene, a screenshot of which is used in the thumbnail for the trailer below.

The characters that includes a loveless professional model couple, an über awkward techie, and a bumbling fertilizer magnate are all so deeply, inherently flawed by their station in their life and Ruben fully fleshes that out in a way that is even more hysterically infuriating. There’s no need for super clever, pitter-patter style dialogue when the organic things that these one-percenters would say are so comically absurd to the rest of the world as is (ex. humbly admitting you make money from making the world’s grenades). It’s almost the same formula as It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia where all the principal characters are terrible in their own unique way and the joy comes from watching them all repeatedly fail. Triangle of Sadness just takes that formula and adds brilliant cinematic sheen and direction and a bit more gravitas.

Triangle of Sadness may not go for a laugh count per scene, but the laughs are pretty damn big when they come around and leave an indelible mark that will have you replaying them in your head well after you leave the theater (or when you close your laptop after streaming it). Again, it doesn’t solve that aforementioned divide, but comedy-at-large should be proud that Östlund is carrying its flag.

This latest work from Ruben Östlund cements his legacy that will be more than deserving of honorary awards and film retrospectives (and limited edition box sets if that’s still a thing we’re all doing in the next few years). Triangle of Sadness is in theaters near you.

Also, massive points to the very clever bit of merch that I will hopefully never have to use.

Pick of the Day: Authors of Jokes to Offend Men (in NYC) 10/26

October 11, 2022
News
allison kelley, claire takodoro, danielle kraese, jokes to offend men, kate herzlin, nyc comedy, ysabel yates

Ranging from clean jokes to the raunchiest humor, joke books of all kinds have been written for scores covering myriads and myriads of subject matter and backgrounds. In fact, it’s a past time for some comedy nerds to dig up the ones that haven’t aged well at all, which is a big, giant percentage of them.

Comedy writers Allison Kelley, Kate Herzlin, Danielle Kraese, and Ysabel Yates are aiming to change that, and make some comedy history, with their new book Jokes to Offend Men that features a cornucopia of classic set-up/punch jokes, but aiming it towards men (after women being the direct target of so much stand-up comedy of decades past).

Jokes to Offend Men is available in hardcover right now (with audiobook due out 10/24), but you can catch Allison, Kate, Danielle, and Ysabel in person discussing the book at length, thanks to Books Are Magic, with Simon & Schuster’s own Claire Tadokoro at Wild East Brewing Co. in Gowanus, Brooklyn on Wed. Oct. 26th at 7PM.

Tickets are $10.89 and you ought to snag them here now.

Mythic Quest Follows Up Best Quarantine Ep. of TV with Their Most Ambitious Season Yet

October 11, 2022
News
apple tv, mythic quest, rob mcelhenney, season 3

It will probably go down in television history that Mythic Quest pulled off the best, most engaging episode of TV that was shot remotely due to COVID-19 lockdown. So many shows tried and missed the mark, but leave it to Rob McElhenney to figure that one out right before he inspired all of North Wales with gifting Wrexham a dream football team with Ryan Reynolds and make a whole other show about that.

Season 3 of Mythic Quest is just due out a month from now and, by the likes of the scale of this trailer, you’d have no idea that Rob was co-chairman of a Welsh football team. These upcoming episodes will see the original creators of the Mythic Quest game take on the company they left high and dry. Apparently, there’s a tank in this season?

See all of that for yourself here with the season 3 Mythic Quest trailer, then look for new episodes to begin streaming on Apple TV+ starting Fri. Nov. 11th.

Pick of the Day: The Big One (in LA) 11/4

October 10, 2022
News
bri giger, broderick baumann, Carly Kane, ellen harrold, langston kerman, los angeles comedy, lynn maleh, Meg Indurti, Sam Oh, Skyler Higley, the big one

It has been quite some time since one of LA’s very best house shows has happened. For those not in the know, that would The Big One tucked away in an almost too perfect backyard in Highland Park thanks to the efforts of Meg Indurti, Broderick Baumann, and Carly Kane.

It has been several months since they’ve broken out their gorgeously hand painted backdrop, lawn chairs, and utilized the bar that was already there when they moved in, but their latest edition of Big One is coming just a month from now with a marvelous line-up of LA’s (or elsewhere’s) very best comics that you may or may not know. For 11/4, that will include Langston Kerman, Skyler Higley, Lynn Maleh, Bri Giger, Sam Oh, and host Ellen Harrold.

You better go get tickets for $15 right now before it sells out here.

Please Enjoy This Still Relevant Set from the Late, Great Judy Tenuta

October 7, 2022
News
judy tenuta

You might have heard that pioneering comedian Judy Tenuta passed away this week at the age of 72 due to an extended battle with ovarian cancer. Born in 1949, Tenuta passed on with a legacy of breaking new ground not only for women and Asians in comedy, but comics that dance on the weirder side of the form. Tenuta’s unmistakable voice that seems akin to Ursula from The Little Mermaid and punctuating jokes with an accordion was punk rock in the 80s and would probably even still be a welcome break from the norm in 2022 stand-up comedy stages.

So, while you’re diving down a YouTube rabbit hole for Tenuta, enjoy this set, dug up by 800 Pound Gorilla, from the 4th Annual American Comedy Awards in 1990 where Trump and the unhoused in LA were still issues, but the Lakers far outpaced the Clippers instead of being below .500.

Pick of the Day: Uptown Showdown-Cats vs. Dogs (in NYC w/Livestream) 10/11

October 7, 2022
News
alison leiby, jaye mcbride, jo firestone, kenice mobley, monroe martin, nyc comedy, panel debate, peter grosz

The debate of whether cats or dogs are the best furry companion to have in life will be a never ending debate that largely depends on your personality. Still, hearing NYC very best comedians debate the topic ought to be great fun (though it does feel like there’s a slight majority of cat people amongst comedians).

Uptown Showdown at Symphony Space is indeed inviting the much heralded comedic minds of Jo Firestone, Peter Grosz, Alison Leiby, Monroe Martin III, Jaye McBride, and Kenice Mobley to fiercely debate this very divide between the top of the domesticated animal pyramid with Matthew Love hosting. That’s quite the line-up that would take an argument that would probably be pretty entertaining to an entirely other level that you will make it worth the trip to the Upper West Side.

This edition of Uptown Showdown is set for Tues. Oct. 11th at 7PM ET/4PM ET and will be available for livestream as well. Tickets are going for $16 and you really ought to go get them here right now.

Jena Friedman Is Back to Making One of the Most Daring and Hysterical True Crime Shows with Season 2 of Indefensible (Teaser)

October 7, 2022
News
casey anthony, indefensible, jena friedman, season 2

To this day, not enough credit has been given to Jena Friedman and the hysterical, but also crucial work she has done with Indefensible. Simultaneously highlighting tragic stories that have been buried because of the microsecond news cycle and an incredible flawed justice system and honoring the memory of the victims all while making fun of bad people to their face is still something we’re marveling at this very moment.

Thank goodness that Jena got to do another whole season of the groundbreaking series that will air/stream on Sundance TV and AMC Plus. The cruel irony is that there are so many true crime stories that involve people botching up the investigation or the trial and then, subsequently, trying to cover their track or limit their culpability that there could be an endless number of seasons for this show.

Just watch this season 2 teaser for Indefensible here where Jena finds the one guy who thinks Casey Anthony is innocent and you’ll see what we’re saying.

Then, be sure to mark down Thursday, October 27th at 10PM to watch new episodes of Indefensible.

Get Ready for More Havoc from the Privileged with Season 2 Trailer of White Lotus

October 6, 2022
News
aubrey plaza, f murray abraham, hbo, jennifer coolidge, michael imperioli, mike white, season 2, white lotus

Though the upcoming season of White Lotus trades Hawaii for Sicily and an almost an entirely cast and a supposed focus, according to creator Mike White, more on male privilege as opposed to mainly the obscenely wealthy, it all looks just as satirically juicy as the critically acclaimed, beloved, award winning first season.

Having Aubrey Plaza, Michael Imperioli, and F. Murray Abraham next to a returning Jennifer Coolidge amidst a very enticing ensemble cast is frosting on the cake of the next chapter of the fictional White Lotus luxury resort franchise. Thank goodness that that the premiere date is only mere weeks away, specifically Sun. Oct. 30th on HBO/HBO Max.

Get a taste of the Italian flavor of chaos that’s to come on season 2 of The White Lotus with the first official trailer here.

Please Enjoy All the Intersections of Sabrina Wu on Their Tonight Show Debut

October 6, 2022
News
late night, sabrina wu, stand up comedy, tonight show

While there are certain people who are going to take some time to wrap their around all the spectrums that exist for identity, it should be noted that the expanding diversity of who comedians are these days had led to many deeply funny bits that we’ve never seen before as opposed to interchangeable bits about dating or taking Lyft/Uber.

Sabrina Wu is delightful, charming proof of this as shown by their set from last night’s Tonight Show. Being Chinese, trans, queer, and pretty good at sound effects amount to a very, very strong debut late night set. Sabrina managed a pretty hilarious contrast of being deeply vulnerable and silly and wove that into every bit of every facet of their identity. It’s an indelible set of, hopefully, many more to come.

See for yourself and watch Sabrina’s Tonight Show debut here.

Hasan Minhaj’s The King’s Jester Continues to Prove That a Comedy Special Can Be More Than Just Being Alone on Stage for an Hour Telling Unconnected Jokes

October 5, 2022
News
comedy special, hasan minhaj, netflix

Since 2017, the year of his last special, Homecoming King, Hasan Minhaj hosted his groundbreaking show on Netflix, Patriot Act, took a major recurring role in The Morning Show and founded a production banner, 186K Films. He has been so busy that all of that would explain what seemed to be an extended break from stand-up (not to mention the COVID years taking almost all stand-up out of the equation for awhile).

That said, Minhaj seems to pick up right where he left off, not losing a step, with his latest Netflix hour, The King’s Jester with more moxie, more slick graphics, and a thoroughly entertaining journey through all the feels. For those wanting more out of someone doing stand-up for an hour, Minhaj more than delivers here.

Where Homecoming King was an enthralling, hilarious story of coming-of-age, self-acceptance, and love, Minhaj focuses on how important his family is to him through his career highs of punching up at everyone he could with Patriot Act or taking the mic at esteemed honorary ceremonies. Minhaj is very likely the most impassioned storyteller in comedy these days and it’s marvelous to watch how he interconnects all the narratives of past and present throughout The King’s Jester with undeniable fervor.

This hour shows itself to be as emotionally colorful is as the extremely slick graphics display Hasan uses to highlight his points. With as many raucous laughs and applause breaks, there are many points in the special where you can hear a pin drop followed by a precision slicing of a very thick tension. In fact, there are “awwws” and gasps and almost every sort of reaction you can have when you have the audience completely tied to your every word as a comedian.

Akin to Moses Storm’s Trash White, there is so much to take in visually with The King’s Jester that it would be a disservice to just listen to it as an album (even though Netflix will likely release an album version so it can qualify for Grammys consideration). The wild changes in color and utilizing the sort of graphics package that Hasan had at Patriot Act are a more than welcome break from the routine hour of seeing someone in a soft wash behind a nice curtain in a packed venue (though Bo Burnham sure does know how to make that set up look absolutely stunning). We can only hope that, in the not so distant future, it might be jarring to see a comedy special that could double as a very special live episode of a podcast.

Above all, Hasan’s zeal in his performance is what really ties everything together to make The King’s Jester one of Netflix’s best releases this year. There is such urgency in his delivery and all of his act outs that one can’t help be drawn into his world and want to get caught up, with the rest of the audience, on whatever journey Hasan is taking us on. He’s very animated on stage to be sure, but, at the same time, it never feels so outlandish that it takes away from the gravity of criticizing the Saudi government or dealing with American Islamophobia. We  would even venture to say that part of his firebrand way of delivering jokes and stories get fueled by his sticking to the full truth of what he’s talking about as much as possible.

Hasan Minhaj: The King’s Jester is now streaming on Netflix.

The midterm elections are just a month away and it’s crucial to be aware of what is at stake (and that you should really vote, maybe even do so early).

With that in mind, one thing you could do leading up to Election Day, Tues. Nov. 8th, 2022 is go to a comedy show fundraiser Hugo Let the Dogs Out! for a choice progressive candidate for LA’s CD13, Hugo Soto-Martinez, at El Cid on Thurs. Oct. 6th with doors opening at 7PM featuring the comedy stylings of some folks you might have heard of including Joe Mande, Demetri Martin, Gareth Reynolds, Will Menaker, Matt Christman, Andrew Michaan, Megan Koester, and Derek & Dril along with hosts Amber Rollo and Josh Androsky.

You don’t have to pay to enjoy such a spoil of comedy riches (note that El Cid has a 2 item min.), but they’ll obviously be taking donations for Hugo’s campaign. If you can’t make the show, you can donate to Hugo at hugo2022.com.

So, Reboots/Sequels/Revivals Are Never Going to End?

op ed, reboots

The news that both Frasier and the Rob Schneider vehicle The Animal are getting sequels was announced today.

Those are just two of the latest IPs in comedy alone that are being tapped for the latest content to be shoved down our collective throats. Reboots/sequels/revivals are so dominant that Hulu’s meta comedy about reboots called Reboot is actually pretty resonant and getting favorable reviews. One of the first scenes in Reboot‘s pilot actually runs down all the active reboots on TV right now and, as they intended, it’s comically long.

It’s almost a pointless question to ask “Was anyone asking for this?”, but was anyone seriously asking for this? The ardent Frasier fans that we personally know have not even brought up the idea of Frasier being brought back in any regard. They do love wrapping themselves in a binge watch of the much lauded sitcom as comfort food, but there hasn’t been some sort of big hashtag pushing for new episodes of Frasier. Anyone who is a fan of Rob Schneider these days are very likely more aligned with Rob’s politics than his comedy on both stage and screen.

Maybe somebody was asking that aforementioned question, but, more importantly, tons of data segments persuasively show to power executives that bringing back something that people know is where networks/streaming services should be plunking millions, especially when it comes to comedy. Thus, the march through every IP imaginable continues into an endless oblivion of TV series and movies that are decidedly not original in some way/shape/form.

The question that any network/studio/streaming service brass seems to be concerning themselves with is less “What are people asking for?” and more, “What will people’s nostalgia or comfort-with-what-they-know force them to watch?” That dynamic seems more insane when you consider that an original adult animated series like Rick and Morty is still one of the most popular series on TV.

So, similar to the notion that representation matters in media, originality also matters if you want to see anything that isn’t based off of something else whether it’s an old show, historical event, or a board game.

That means go see Bros right now and don’t wait for it to hit streaming.
