comedy news, los angeles

1) Wanna a teaser of who’s performing at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland? (Just pretended like you asked the question if you’re the small percentage that didn’t think that) Well, here you go. More names to be announced on Mon.

2) In Will Ferrell news, there might be a Step Brothers 2…

3) You do know that Kumail Nanjiani and Mike Lawrence will be performing on Conan next week, right?

4) Dana Gould sat down with LA Weekly and chatted about how advertises The Dana Gould Hour by yelling out of his car on Sunset Blvd. and more.

5) Who do you want to see at the Riot LA Comedy Festival? They’re taking suggestions. Off the top of our heads, we’d like to see Emo Phillips, Steven Wright, and Conan O’Brien.

6) Aziz Ansari got a shout out presidential style.

7) MAN OH MAN, it’s no surprise that Roger Ebert hates Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie.

8) Watch “Hannibal Buress vs. Jon Dore in HORSE” vs. “Katie Crown as a Random Pregnant Lady”.

9) Eddie Pepitone yelling is pretty hilarious even if it’s about IMBD.

10) I’d thought that people would have gotten over trying to curb what comedians say, but I often forget that stupid often begets stupid.

1) Ben Stiller’s Red Hour to launch web series “Burning Love” with Insurge Pictures on Yahoo’s upcoming comedy channel featuring Ken Marino, Malin Akerman, Kristen Bell, Michael Ian Black, Ken Jeong, Adam Scott, and more.

2) The cast of Community along with creator Dan Harmon chatted about their return in less than two weeks at Paleyfest…

3) Don’t miss Kelly Carlin’s Sirius XM show today with guest Eddie Izzard 4PM PST, Ch. 99 (You have Sirius XM, right?)

4) The Moontower Comedy Festival in Austin, TX has, by the looks of it, more than a healthy line-up coming up and Sean Patton, one of our favorites, will undoubtedly get some of his most hilarious friends like Kyle Kinane to come to New Orleans, LA this week.

5) One of our favorite Adult Swim shows from last year, NTSF:SD:SUV, starts shooting this week!

6) Not only will this week’s Holy Fuck! (the downtown LA Comedy show, not the Electronica group) have Andy Kindler, TJ Miller, Hannibal Buress, and more, they will also have T-shirts for $10 that we strongly suggest you pick up

7) Joining TJ Miller, Brian Posehn, Kumail Nanjiani, and more in a R-rated stop motion picture about saving someone from accidentally going to hell will be Mila Kunis, who plays a “half-sy” demon. Hopefully, comedies set in hell will now have a better film for itself than Little Nicky.

8) Wax Mitch Hedberg nostalgia with woodburnings of his jokes…

9) We all need to get a Kickstarter for Will Weldon’t Most Inspirational Sports Movie of All Time because it sounds awesome (even if it ends up spiting him because he was being really fucking sarcastic).

10) If you watch as much comedy as I do, you’ll probably have this thought, “If they would have said ‘bottom bitch’ instead of ‘good friends’ that would have got such a big laugh.”

1) Just as you had hoped, THERE ARE lost episodes of Henry Phillips’ Henry’s Kitchen…

2) Chris Hardwick made the official launch announcement for the Nerdist Channel on YouTube as a zombie.

3) “The Hungry Games” is our favorite Hunger Games parody thus far and we haven’t even read any of the books (We’re not a “popular literature bureau”, OK?).

4) Whether remembering what it was like starting in out stand-up or wondering what it entails, read Kevin Hawkins account of exactly that and feel better about doing comedy/getting into it.

5) Jason Segel may not be a part of the next Muppets movie at all, but not, apparently, for any “creative differences”.

6) Don Rickles has an app of his own, even though, at some point, he’s probably joked about how he’s still wondering what the hell this thing is.

7) Hannibal Buress really did just walked on stage, without any permission, with a whole bunch of rappers and their entourages and got away with it, not to mention live-tweeting it.

8) Nick Ciarelli finally discovered the conversation between John Wilkes Booth and his horse after shooting Lincoln. Yes, this is “real”.

9) We’re still doing our ticket giveaway to Anna David’s True Tales of Lust and Love if you want to tell us how lonely you’re feeling…

10) On today’s Puddin’, Eddie Pepitone challenges Megan Amram in “letter to the editor” writing.

11) This whole week a giant rock will be traveling through LA county to be placed as a “sculpture” at LACMA at 8 MPH, which is at least a million times faster than anyone getting comparable recognition in comedy.

1) Doug Stanhope’s “Before Turning the Gun on Himself” is out today. Get it.

2) The 2nd Annual Comedy Awards just released their nominations with Bridesmaids, 30 Rock, Modern Family, and Louis CK getting plenty of recognition. Also, the Artist, again?

3) Also in just announced news, the Bridgetown Comedy Festival just released their line-up and, with it, coming closer and closer to a comedy mecca.

4) One of our favorite live shows, Set List: the Improvised Stand-Up Show is touring around the world again.

5) The Throwing Shade podcast with Bryan Safi & Erin Gibson just got welcomed to the Max Fun family!

6) Brown Paper Tickets and The Spit Take have an open spot for a non-profit or community-oriented organization for a free information table at their SXSW comedy show in Austin (8:30PM Wed. Mar 14th at Esther’s Follies). At the table will be Todd Barry, Brendon Walsh, Mike Lawrence, Kristine Levine, DC Pierson and host Nick Turner. If interested in spreading the word about a group/cause can email Julie Seabaugh at julie@brownpapertickets.com.

7) Rick Shapiro just came out with a book, which, almost unsurprisingly, is titled “Unfiltered”.

8) Yahoo! is joining in the branded web comedy league. Based off the Hunger Games parody yesterday, they might have some good stuff coming down the line.

9) Gallery 1988 is going for Round 2 of “Is This Thing On?” featuring art inspired by funny people.

JCallos_Louie.jpg

10) The International TV Festival is looking for comedy web series submissions…

11) The idea that a bar fight would even almost arise at an open mic over a guy being obviously uncomfortable with cross dressing is ludicrous, especially when the cross dresser is our good friend and funny comedian, Rye Silverman.

12) “What Happens in Echo Park, Stays Recorded on a Podcast” Can we make this a slogan?

Recently Released Comedy Albums That We’re More Excited About Than Sleigh Bells

March 7, 2012
Uncategorized
comedy albums, specials

Yes, Sleigh Bells is pretty fantastic with their new album Reign of Terror. Still, the last time we checked, A) We’re not a music blog and B) Folks listening to comedy albums seems to be still a foreign idea.

So, instead of spending your last dollars on your iTunes gift card from Christmas on hard hitting indie rock-noise pop, here’s a list of comedy albums that came out over the last few months from some of our favorite comedians that you might enjoy.

“Before Turning the Gun on Himself” Doug Stanhope-Obviously, we’re excited whenever Stanhope puts an album or a special out, but we got to catch some of this latest one, just released today, when he headlined the Comedy Store last year and it was amazing.

“Unbearable” Hampton Yount-Yount is one the funniest comedians coming up in the comedy at this very moment and has a deft hand in making you laugh and what you initially thought you would never laugh at. This album, which you can download for free, is proof of that.

“Billy Wayne Davis” (self-titled)-We saw Billy Wayne Davis last year kill a few times at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival up in Portland and are more than glad that an album of his “thinking man’s hillbilly” is now available.

“Chronological Disorder” Dylan Brody-Self-proclaimed purveyor of fine words and phrases Dylan Brody is the type of comedian that really presents comedy in the light of an art form. Through stories and extended bits, he offers up a higher-brow of humor that can be very funny for those willing to listen to his 4th album.

Chronological Disorder

“A Great Stillness” Eddie Pepitone-Simply put, we love watching Eddie Pepitone yell about things. It’s hilarious. More specifically, we love the metaphorical boat that Eddie is steering in and out of his bits and rants throughout the entirety of this album and found ourselves laughing hysterically no matter where we were.

A Great Stillness [Explicit]

“New in Town” John Mulaney-From the school of “having as much as fun as the crowd” style of comedy, Mulaney gave us a delightful special with “New In Town” that managed the precarious balance of silliness and honesty, especially when it comes to trying to get a Xanax prescription.

“Best of Gentlemen Scumbags” Mike Bridenstine & Mike Burns-There aren’t too many compilations of podcasts in album form, but we’re glad that one of them is Mike Bridenstine and Mike Burns’ podcast ‘Gentlemen Scumbags’ featuring their hilarity along with that of their esteemed guests which include: Kyle Kinane, James Adomian, Sean Patton, and more.

“Slippery When Moist” Garfunkel & Oates-Over a year ago, we heard Garfunkel & Oates song, “I Would Never (Have Sex With You)” and laughed hard, yet were also moved at the thought that this song might be about us. That song is on this album as well as their popular “tribute” to Occupy Wall St. “Save the Rich”, which we’ll listen to obsessively over and over.

1) If Key & Peele’s Flicker sketch was made into a movie, we’d feel like it would be a summer blockbuster.

2) Tonight on Conan, meaning schedule your DVRs or wait for the online clips tomorrow morning, both Ed Helms and Kumail Nanjiani will be appearing (TBS 11PM).

3) You can catch part of the South Beach Comedy Festival this Fri. at 12PM as Comedy Central’s streaming one of their shows online with Kevin Biggins, Dan Soder, Renee Gauthier, and more.

4) Moshe Kasher’s Kasher in the Rye got a recommendation and a nod to the title from the Los Angeles Magazine! Don’t forget about his live book release events later this month.

5) Check out the line-ups for the third season of John Oliver’s NY Stand-Up Show…

6) John Turturro, Sofia Vergara, and Sharon Stone are joining Woody Allen in Allen’s next comedy where he and Turturro will be gigolos.

7) This week’s 5 Most Intentionally Funny Videos is up at the Nerdist with “Anne, Frankly”, “Miss Wallflower USA”, and more.

8) Don’t know what comedy albums to listen to lately so you just go ahead and get into Sleigh Bells? We’ve got you covered.

9) NBC’s Community met the trailer for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Prometheus.

10) On today’s Puddin’, Eddie Pepitone demonstrates, with the help of Megan Amram, the best way to ask a co-worker out.

11) Developing a joke is an incredibly difficult process to capture and then present to people in a way that’s easy to understand. For instance, very few other jobs let you get it wrong so many times.

1) Comedy Central just greenlighted 3 series from Andy Daly, Jeff Ross, and Nathan Fielder, respectively. Along with the arrival of the Eric Andre Show, Comedy Bang Bang, Girls, and Veep, 2012 will be quite a year for new comedy on TV.

2) Of the documentaries coming up about comedy, The Bitter Buddha about Eddie Pepitone is one were definitely looking forward to.

3) Last night on late night, Kumail Nanjiani educated the world about heroin on Conan. Tonight, Conan has a stellar episode lined-up with Rob Riggle, Mike Lawrence, and even frequent cameo star in Funny or Die exclusives and huge comedy fan Jon Hamm (TBS 11PM).

4) Funny or Die to launch a digital magazine, The Occasional, available for download on the iPad for those real fancy comedy nerds.

5) The Nerdist welcomed a new podcast into their fold, The JV Club with Janet Varney.

6) Lewis Black to have his next special, In God We Rust, on Epix Mar. 17th.

7) It’s always fun when Rob Delaney answers questions on Reddit…

8) Judy Greer’s pilot for ABC just keeps getting more fun as Ken Marino is set to co-star.

9) We’re still doing a ticket giveaway for Anna David’s True Tales of Lust & Love this Saturday if you want to go.

10) Ice Cube’s “Good Day” is probably on the same day that comedians refer to as “…the other day.”

comedy news, los angeles

1) Improv Everywhere amazingly crashed a TED talk. Please watch without reading the video title.

2) The finale of this season’s Portlandia airs tonight 10PM on IFC, then followed by an extended sneak peek of Comedy Bang Bang the comedy series, which will undoubtedly be made into hundreds of .gifs only minutes after.

3) The Comedy Theory Behind Developing Jokes Battle-Jonas Polsky vs. Myq Kaplan. It’s long, but incredibly fascinating.

4) Mike Lawrence on Conan.

5) We know we’ve asked you to watch a lot of stuff already, but, seriously, watch Bob Odenkirk’s pilot for Adult Swim because, well… did you read the part where we said that it’s “Bob Odenkirk’s pilot for Adult Swim”?

6) Chris Gethard will be at SXSW giving away free, but not fancy, shit.

7) Amy Poehler is joining Adam Scott in divorced-kid-grown-up comedy.

8) Follow NTSF:SD:SUV’s production blog for Season 2 on Adult Swim because their body count is already north of 4.

9) The Black List compiled the list of the most cliched dialogue.

10) @Nick_Offerman is official.

11) We’re behind Will Weldon’s 10 Bills to Watch Currently Being Debated in Congress on Lady Bro more so than anything else in politics right now.

12) In this latest Nerdist post of ours, we made the point (for those commenters out there that don’t think think we have an opinion on anything and instead try to take an objective high ground, you’re probably just offended that we made a point you didn’t agree with) that “edgy” humor has ingrained itself so in the mainstream that it’s no longer edgy.

13) The giant rock moving to LACMA late tonight is getting more attention than all comedy in the Greater LA Area. Keep in mind, it’s a rock.

1) Let’s all thank Greta Van Susteren for not understanding comedy/not listening and whining about Louis CK being the host of the RTCA dinner in D.C. to where CK has withdrawn from his hosting duties. We’re pretty sure that she probably thinks Louis CK was completely serious when making this mini doc on the Catholic Church.

2) Mike Birbiglia’s Sleepwalk With Me got acquired by IFC Films!

Sleepwalk With Me

3) You can watch the Comedy Bang Bang extended preview now. Also, we totally called it on the .gifs being made immediately.

4) The one and only James Adomian is recording in album in Portland at Helium on April 11th. Do not miss this.

5) There is more of a push to get the “r-word”, which will an enormous majority will still always call “retarded”, banned, which must be their way of getting all of comedy to say retarded way more in the next several months.

6) At Gallery 1988 Melrose, the Is This Thing On? 2 (art inspired by comedy) exhibition is now on display.

7) Apparently, Bret Easton Ellis is taking suggestions for a sequel to American Psycho on Twitter and it’s hilarious.

8) The very funny Andy Sanford gives a great explanation as to why there shouldn’t be a “truth vs. clever” debate in comedy.

9) Peter Atencio gave us a look what a hard day on season 2 of Key & Peele is like…

10) Comedian Occupational Hazard #126: You might develop an irregular tendency to tell “positive thinking” people to go fuck themselves.

1) Wonder what’s happening with comedy at SXSW? There’s a record of all of it on their official blog.

2) Speaking of which, a comedy panel at SXSW had a fascinating conversation on how most comedy leans towards the left politically…

3) Sadly, after almost a decade of great DIYLCIYOH (Do It Yourself Live Comedy In Your Own House) the Comedy Car Hole has ended, leaving very few DIYLCIYOH’ers in Los Angeles. Perhaps, the upcoming Don’t Tell The Neighbors along with the already popular Long Way Down will fill help fill this increasing DIYLCIYOH void.

4) One of our favorite web series, Danger 5, has now made it to the air in Australia. For bizarrely hilarious it is (i.e. Nazi dinosaurs, etc.), let’s please bring it Stateside however that is supposed to work.

5) If you enjoyed @BretEastonEllis ranting on Twitter yesterday, you should check out comedian Steve Schneider’s feed @stvschndr. It’ll probably top whatever you were going to read this Sun. afternoon.

6) The hilarious Andrés du Bouchet (his album Naked Trampoline Hamlet was one of favorites from last year) has joined in on the Tumblr game. Plenty of silliness and absurdity is sure to abound here.

7) Jeremy Paul’s 8th Naked Declarative Statement. (Disclaimer: This is not a web series at all dealing with grammar.)

8) As we all should do twice a year (or perhaps more for sheer nostalgia’s sake), let us hear Paul F. Tompkins call plenty of us lazy for whining about Daylight Savings Time.

9) I sincerely hope the integration of races and ethnicities accelerates exponentially from this point on so I can stop hearing stupid bits of comedy that might go “You’ll always see an Asian do this and a black guy never do this…” forever.

We’re surprised by very little in LA comedy anymore, but, every once in awhile, someone will say, “Oh yeah, we’re going to have a show in a video store tonight with Wendy Liebman, Hannibal Buress, Brent Weinbach, and Josh Fadem. You should come out.”

Then we have what many people have come to call a “WTF moment”.

But hey, stuff like that just happens, right?

1) If you needed a visual of what a day in the life of Marc Maron is like aside from what he describes on WTF, watch it right now on Hulu.

2) SXSW comedy round-up:
Huffington Post Comedy Day 1 Recap
Laughspin Day 1 Recap
Austin Chronicle recommendations of what to see
Kumail Nanjiani answered a fun questionnaire
Funny or Die, College Humor, UCB, and more PRESENT This Is A Comedy Show (with some of our favorite performers that the rest of the country perhaps had not heard of)
And this happened…

3) The funny Jake Fogelnest of the oft-reblogged JakeFogelnest.com is moving to LA!

4) BBC is trying a quiz show here in the U.S. with Lewis Black. That sounds like fun.

5) Tonight on late night, Will Ferrell will be on the Late Show with David Letterman (CBS 11:35PM)

6) Reggie Watts got called in by Kid Ikarus for, apparently, nothing(?)

7) South Park comes back this week…

8) Parks and Recreation’s fictional Leslie Knope got real life support…

9) In you can submit to these short film festivals news, try the Palm Springs International Shortfest and the San Francisco International Festival of Short Films.

10) Dave Horwitz “does” a card trick…

11) Yes, I do feel a little ridiculous recording a podcast outside of Meltdown while they are recording a podcast and commenting on it during my podcast.
