Trailer for “Support The Girls” Offers Up Timely Indie Workplace Comedy for 2018

June 26, 2018
Uncategorized
andrew bujalski, magnolia pictures, regina hall, trailer

From Computer Chess alone, we’ve become Andrew Bujalski fans and, subsequently, were really excited to see what he came up with next.

The trailer for his latest, Support the Girls, delivers in getting us hyped for another Bujalski off-beat comedy. Though, rather than a weird look into the early days of chess playing computers, we’re going into the inner workings of a Hooters-esque bar with what seems to be a shining lead in Regina Hall.

Perhaps, this will be a sweeter version of Party Down set in a sports bar and will be a timely story in the era of #MeToo and #TimesUp.

See for yourself in this trailer.

If your interest is hooked like ours is, then look for Support The Girls in theaters starting August 24th.

W. Kamau Bell’s Private School Negro, Wherein He Delightfully Proves Trump Is Racist, Is Now Streaming on Netflix

For a couple of years now, W. Kamau Bell has been primarily focused on his critically acclaimed CNN series United Shades of America. Just in case you forgot, Bell is a very fun stand-up to watch even though he’s a very overtly political comedian (having a warm, inviting demeanor might be a good place to start when doing effective political comedy these days).

His new hour Private School Negro is a great reminder how jubilant and jovial Kamau can be while delving into potentially divisive material and still make it all work. Even though he spends several minutes on a bit focused on Trump undeniably being a racist (and his supporters who say you can’t really call him a racist), it’s done up in such a playful way that those exhausted on Trump humor might still enjoy it.

Another way that Kamau deals with talking about politics and race so well in this special is that he brings humanity to it, specifically in sharing stories about raising his daughters who are biracial. It’s both sweet and offers perspective in what is, often times, mostly an ideological fight.

All in all, Kamau has made a political comedy special that is very much of the time, but, thankfully, has some legitimate hope in it.

W. Kamau Bell: Private School Negro is now streaming on Netflix.

This is just a friendly neighborhood reminder that one of the most bonkers, down right fun comedy shows, Late Late Breakfast, is coming around to LA again on July 7th.

Tyler Jackson and Danny Maupin make stand-ups go through insane challenges while telling their jokes that involve anything from preparing food, taking on the attitude of the seven deadly sins, the audience doing karaoke, etc.

It’s controlled chaos at its best and you shouldn’t miss it for anything.

Again, the latest edition of Late Late Breakfast will be on Saturday, July 7th at Silverlake Lounge with doors opening 4PM. The show does take donations!

China Blocks Entire HBO Website Following Last Week Tonight’s Deep Dive on Xi Jinping and China

It shouldn’t come as a surprise at this point, but Xi Jinping can’t take a joke or well deserved, satirical criticism of his policies and doctrine either.

Over a week ago, John Oliver and his Last Week Tonight team did this segment about China, specifically focusing on the troubling restrictions on free expression in China by President Xi Jinping. In retaliation (and to probably keep Chinese citizens in the dark about the authoritarian and Islamophobic tendencies of Xi’s administration), Chinese State Media has just blocked access to HBO’s website.

So, Last Week Tonight has to be watched via the Dark Web in China (or maybe in Hong Kong)?

We can only imagine that it would be very hard to be a comedian, especially a political one, operating in China right now even though there’s plenty to make fun of and satirize.

Here’s the First Trailer for Netflix’s 15 Minute Special Series “The Comedy Lineup”

Here’s your first look at the first batch of Netflix’s stand-up experiment of having 15 minute specials (though they could have tried to come up with a much-less-generic-sounding name).

As you can see, Michelle Buteau, Ian Karmel, Taylor Tomlinson, Sam Jay, Phil Wang, Sabrina Jalees, Jak Knight, and Tim Dillon are all up to bat who we’re all really on board for.

Also, you might notice in the trailer that rear close up angle on the comics, which is intriguing and has us curious how that’ll play out on the specials.

Look for this edition of The Comedy Lineup on July 3rd on Netflix.

In his TV stand-up debut, Danny Jolles delivers an argument for the oft-maligned group commonly referred to as “bros”.

Jolles, who loves deconstructing opposing opinions in joke form, certainly weaves his points into a finely crafted set that you really ought to watch instead of, perhaps, already getting suspicious because it’s a “bro defense”.

Watch, enjoy, listen, and learn here.

One of the Better Coming-of-Age Studio Comedies We’ve Seen in Awhile “Blockers” Is Now on DVD

We didn’t get a proper chance to give some well deserved praise for Blockers when it had its theatrical run, so we’re doing it right now, right here.

When it comes to big to mid-size studio released comedies (as opposed to the dramedy fare that makes the rounds at Sundance or TIFF), genuinely laugh-out-loud broad films are hard to come by over the last few years.

Blockers, directed by Kay Cannon and written by Brian and Jim Kehoe, blends physical comedy, raunchy humor, and a coming-of-age story quite nicely. Also, it’s a great original female comedy that isn’t being redone as a female version of a previously male-led comedy. It’s probably been said many a time already, but if you’re looking for a Superbad or Can’t Hardly Wait for 2018, Blockers might be what you’re looking for.

Also, John Cena continues to delightfully surprise in holding his own with well-respected comedic stars Leslie Mann and Leslie Mann.

So, with that in mind, go get Blockers on Amazon or iTunes right now.

Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee Season 10 Gets Full Trailer Done Up Like Vintage Commercial

One underlying penchant of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee is Jerry Seinfeld’s love for classic ads. It makes sense given his affinity for cars of the past.

So, Jerry sells season 10 (coming to Netflix on July 6th) in this trailer as if it were an add for some home appliance in the 50s (even going so far as to do most of it up in black and white).

At this point, the freewheeling hangout/interview series knows it formula and how to execute quite well. Really, you can almost see that episodes with Kate McKinnon, Mulaney, Chappelle, Galifianakis will almost certainly deliver.

MTV’s Newly Launched MTV Studios Looking to Revive ‘Daria’ Amongst Other Properties

Not only is a Daria revival/reboot officially a priority for MTV, but they might be taking a stab at bringing back Beavis and Butt-Head as well. This probably means that MTV is going to put new, original sitcoms on the backburner for awhile.

We almost thought we hit peak 90s nostalgia, but, as it turns out, not quite yet.

That being said, maybe they’ll let Bo Burnham do something connected to a reimagining of Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous.

In Hannah Gadsby’s Hour “Nanette”, Gadsby Reveals and Undoes the Seams of Comedy to Properly Tell Her Story of Sexual Assault

June 21, 2018

Much of 2018 is left, but we’re already thinking that Aussie comedian Hannah Gadsby and her new special Nanette, now streaming on Netflix as of this week, will be talked about for quite some time.

There are so many facets to it that, we think, demand such attention.

First off, Gadsby, like the recently released Rape Jokes from Cameron Esposito, confronts the topic of sexual abuse and assault by sharing her story. Gadsby does so by joking about it and then stripping away the humor to reveal the truth (and to also get closure for herself and make other victims of sexual abuse and assault feel less alone).

The contrast between the two angles lends to Gadsby also sharing her personal philosophy on how comedy exactly works, down to the very DNA of it. From this almost critical dissection of comedy, Gadbsy goes on to suggest that she might have to step away from comedy as she wants to present the truth, warts and all, no matter how uncomfortable it may be.

With this mix, Nanette is an hour that really is dramedy more than it is a simply labeled stand-up comedy special. There are funny, charming bits and passages that are incredibly intense and effective, both of which Hannah manages to weave in her expertise in art history as well.

So, we highly urge you to go see all this for yourself in Gadsby’s Nanette on Netflix.

LA Comedians Reveal That the LA Comedy Scene Does Not Pay Six Figures a Year to Comics “Breaking Into the LA Circuit”

LA Comedians Reveal That the LA Comedy Scene Does Not Pay Six Figures a Year to Comics “Breaking Into the LA Circuit”

In response to this controversial THR article by Seth Abramovitch that indeed claims, “…a newer comic just breaking into the L.A. circuit can earn anywhere from $1,250 to $2,500 per week,” many of LA’s stalwart comedians gave Vulture the true figures as to what they’ve actually made while trying to come up in LA (spoiler alert: it’s a lot of drink tickets, if anything at all).

What’s essential to understand is that being in comedy involves being in it for the sheer love of it, then trying to figure out how you can patch enough gigs, comedy-related or no, to make any sort of living. From there, a select few actually do get to make the so-called “big bucks”, but it’s pretty much feast or famine (that’s the case for most creative endeavors by the way).

Instagram Introduces IGTV Allowing You To Make Hour Long Videos for Instagram

With Facebook’s launch of Facebook Watch well under way to take on streaming services, Zuckerberg and the Facebook-owned Instagram are now making a two prong attack with the introduction of IGTV.

Instagram’s IGTV, officially unveiled today, allows users to both watch and make videos native to Instagram that are up to an hour long. We’ll have to see if such a move offers up competition in the space for uploading videos (a space almost entirely dominated by YouTube and somewhat by Vimeo).

That being said, an hour of running time does allow anything from a sketch to a TV pilot to maybe what could be considered an extended Instagram story to exist on “the Gram”. We’ll just have to wait and see if all that happens and, if so, happens en masse.

Apple Orders Immigrant Anthology Series ‘Little America’ From Kumail Nanjiani, Emily Gordon, Lee Eisenberg & Alan Yang

Well, Apple is certainly starting off their original programming line-up with a bang. Not only does this have plenty of intrigue just from the stellar writing/producing team assembled whose credits included The Big Sick, The Office, SMILF, and Master of None, but such a show couldn’t come at a more crucial time, in recent memory, for immigrant stories to be told.

Suffice it to say that we can’t even wait to see the trailer for this.
