Henry Phillips’ Henry’s Kitchen Is Back and Now Putting on a “Masterclass”

October 22, 2018

If the myth of Sisyphus were translated into a modern day form (that also happened to be one of the funniest things on the Internet), it just might be Henry Phillips and his existential laden attempts at hosting a cooking show.

That show, of course, is called Henry’s Kitchen and is indeed one of our all time favorite web series and just got a whole new lease on life via Thrillist to do a “Masterclass”. In it, Henry gets an even nicer kitchen to ponder point of it all while doing his best with/botching whatever he’s cooking.

Dive in with this first entry Green Onions and then a whole row of new eps here.

Anthony Atamanuik and company are at it at The President Show again (right before the midterm elections) with their “documentary” special set in a possible near future where Donald Trump falls from power.

Perhaps, this will hit the mark in comparison to the real world in similar fashion the way Anthony did leading up to the 2016 election and pretty much predicting what Trump would say in debates and or rallies.

Get a taste of what is (hopefully, in real life) to come here.

A President Show Documentary: The Fall of Donald Trump premieres tonight on Comedy Central at 11PM.

Whether it be his stand-up, a play, his exquisite piano skills, painting on pics of the GOP to make them into drag queens, you should get into whatever Daniel Webb is doing/being the ringleader for.

So, we urge you to go to Parfait! “a monthly comedy play starring female and queer standups, laced with sketch, music, cartoons, and drag queens!”

For this inaugural show, they’ve got the likes of Maggie Maye, Kerri Lendo, Pete Zias, and Laurie Kilmartin (and Ramin Nazer as the house band).

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Go get them now here.

Besides it being Neil Hamburger and the fact that it’s a very, very, very, very stacked line-up (perhaps almost worthy of a gala?), next Sunday will mark 11 years of Neil’s residency (the longest solo residency in the comedy scene that we can think of) at The Satellite in Silverlake.

If you need more reason to go, then just trust that we’re telling you to go because it’s worth it.

Get your tickets here quick as we have a feeling that it might sell out.

Trailer for Showtime’s “Black Monday” Looks Like a TV Series Prequel to the Wolf of Wall Street Starring Don Cheadle

In short, that’s enough for us to get on board.

Martin Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street did cover the infamous stock market crash known as Black Monday, but this upcoming eponymous Showtime series from Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, David Caspe, and Jordan Cahan is entirely dedicated to it.

In fact, we could almost see this as a spiritual prequel to both Wolf of Wall Street and, in a way, especially because of star Don Cheadle, House of Lies.

Get a taste or, in this case, a line off the table of what’s to come on Sun., Jan. 20th 10PM on Showtime here.

Fox Makes Script Commitment Plus Penalty to Riki Lindhome’s “Tails”

This makes for yet another intriguing addition to Fox’s development slate as a project from Sabrina Jalees and Diablo Cody was also announced this week.

Lindhome, who we hope you’d know from Garfunkel and Oates and Another Period, will indeed be writing and starring in the project about a late 30s woman refusing to settle.

Based off of how incredible the song and music video for Garfunkel and Oates’ 29/31 is, we have no doubt that Riki’s take on what would might be a decade after that song will be worth watching.

The monthly solo character comedy reunion-themed show Reunion is always a fantastic dive into some parallel universe and a great showcase of many of LA’s best characters.

As Halloween is right around the corner, they’ll be doing a special “Hell” edition where people reunite to “remember their death day”. With no irony at all, this sounds like a hell of a good time (pun intended).

On the line-up is:
David Bly
Leslie Collins
Laura McDonald
John Milhiser
Mike O’Gorman
Hosts Leah Rudick & Steve Soroka

Admission is free, but the good folks at Reunion ask for a $5 suggested donation with all proceeds going to Human Rights Campaign.

Nate Craig’s Preferred Customer Is One of Our Favorite Comedy Albums of the Year

October 19, 2018

The opening to, Preferred Customer, this new album from Nate Craig, should set a new standard for opening an hour of comedy. It’s, at the same time, warm, inviting, just the right, measured amount of sass, and an actual extended greeting beyond the routine “great to be here” or story about what part of town the venue in which the album/special was recorded at.

Such care and consideration are the bedrocks of what makes up Craig’s latest and greatest album. The observations within Nate’s bits, ranging from inventions to abortion to Adobe Flash, are so clever and original, yet never too farfetched. Similarly, the hour progresses smoothly and nothing seems shoe-horned in, though the material is incredibly varied, topic-wise. Craig just seems to stick the landing here, whether it be in delivery, pacing, diction, etc.

Simply put, we were laughing out loud, wire-to-wire, in our car while listening to Preferred Customer. Thus, we’ve found one of our favorite stand-up albums of 2018.

Preferred Customer comes out this Thursday (in just a few hours of this post) wherever you stream your albums, but you can (and should) pre-order it on iTunes right now.

Sabrina Jalees To Write (and Possibly Star in) Multi Cam “Hanging On” with Diablo Cody Now in Development at Fox

We’ve dug Sabrina Jalees ever since she set foot in LA and started hitting the ground running on stand-up stages all around town. Her coming up with a series with  Diablo Cody sounds intriguing, especially as it’s being made as a multi cam that deals with a family reconnecting with their lesbian daughter and her fiancé.

Though Jalees hasn’t nabbed the role of the daughter just yet, she is so fun to watch that we have a hard time imagining not being on screen for this project. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Also, it’s worth nothing that, If picked up, this will certainly be a fascinating addition to Fox’s comedy line-up, which currently includes Last Man Standing.

Puddles Pity Party Lands Las Vegas Residency at Caesar’s Palace at Start of 2019

A few years ago, we were at The Paul F. Tompkins Show at Largo and, in the middle of the show, Paul mysteriously got a call that he “had” to take. The stage was empty for a few seconds, but out of the corner of our eye, we caught the glow of lantern coming from behind us, walking through the aisle.

That lantern was carried by none other than the towering sad clown that is Puddles Pity Party, who then took the stage with several vintage trunks that were part of an ingenious bit and sang beautifully. It was enthralling, funny, and all kind of unbelievable simultaneously.

Naturally, we’re glad that Vegas will be giving him a residency at Cleopatra’s Barge at Caesar’s Palace from Jan. 17th-Feb 9th next year, so many more rows of people can hopefully be witness to the magic and charm of Puddles Pity Party.

“Nathan for You” Has Ended, Comedy Central Confirms

Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, it might be worthwhile to give a round of applause to comedic mastermind Nathan Fielder.

If you’d like to hold out hope that this might, possibly, maybe be a bit by Fielder, it’s a little weird that this announcement would show up on Pitchfork, a site almost entirely dedicated to music only, rather than something like Deadline. Also, as of this post, there is nothing on Nathan Fielder or Comedy Central’s social media channels backing this up.

However, Fielder accomplished whole hell of a lot with his run at Nathan For You and if he feels like he wants to wrap up the series so he can regroup and find a new angle in which to elevate pranking to an art form, we can’t wait to see what he has in store next.

Watch Trailer for Sally4Ever, the Latest Charming UK Sitcom Export Coming Stateside

We’d like to think that because of the successes of series like Catastrophe and Fleabag, us Yanks will now get to see more UK sitcoms right when they come out in the UK (or pretty close to it) as opposed to waiting for a random amount of time to get US distribution or just straight up remade with an American cast (kind of like HBO’s other new comedy Camping).

A new beneficiary of a possible “British Comedy Invasion” will be Sally4Ever coming to HBO and Sky Atlantic from UK gem Julia Davis, who also created the aforementioned UK original version of Camping (this actually has HBO in both the Julia Davis and Sharon Horgan business, suggesting a new affinity for female writer/director/producer/actresses from across the pond). This new show will follow a fun, but prickly love triangle and already shows promise from this trailer.

If you’re digging it, Sally4Ever set to premiere on HBO on Sunday, Nov. 11th at 10:30PM.

Ted Alexandro’s New Hour “Senior Class of Earth” Is a Finely Crafted Hour of Comedy in 2018

Due to the nature of showbiz and the instantaneous demand of something new, crafting an hour of comedy often is rushed and, consequently, ends up looking rushed. You’ll find that there’s no connective tissue between the material and the arc of tone and energy seem random at best.

Ted Alexandro’s Senior Class of Earth is a welcome break from all of that.

Ted Alexandro is a great comedian and an exemplary artisan of the form. He has done it before, but Ted shows again what a well crafted hour of stand-up can be (and can be for the world weary audiences of 2018) with Senior Class of Earth. As always, Ted is so perfectly laid back in this special/album with his performance that he can sail through choppy waters and keep the audience on board the whole time. That’s not so easy these days with the mere mention of a certain political figure or divisive topic freezing up comedy audiences immediately.

Here’s a trailer to get a taste of what we’re talking about.

So, we urge you to get and enjoy Senior Class of Earth, available now as a special from All Things Comedy and as an album from 800 Pound Gorilla.

It’s not part of the special, but Ted showed how very good he is at making the medicine go down with a spoonful of sugar in this recent set about Louis CK and Cosby.

While there a streamlining of Conan over at TBS that will debut in January, there will still be plenty of Conan to have in your life over the next few months.

One of those things will be a podcast with open conversations between O’Brien and guests in an attempt to get to know them outside of the pre-arranged stories they’ve done on his show for a quarter century and maybe, just maybe, make a new friend. If anything, it’ll probably allow to be Conan O’Brien that we enjoy the most, which is a Conan O’Brien with as little boundaries as possible.

Episodes will start dropping soon, but you can listen to a trailer and subscribe over at Earwolf here.

It would seem as through comedian Ryan Singer has been and will forever be on a quest to simultaneously understand the connective tissue of the human experience and how we reconcile it with the infinite universe around us and make comedy about said quest for any and all.

His latest album, Free Love, is a notable milestone in said quest as Singer beautifully weaves through nuanced and spirited jokes about esoteric knowledge, singularity, and milkshakes. Ryan also keeps a good sense of self-awareness so it doesn’t seem like you’re going for the trippy ride that you’re going to go on (and will delight in) within this hour.

Perhaps, nicest of all, Ryan is living true to the title and offering up this album for FREE download. We say that you should take up Singer on his Free Love. Do so here.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Fourth and Final Season Premieres Tonight

In a not so distant past that seems oh so distant, Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna were set to do a dark rom com musical series over at Showtime.

A network change to CW and a handful of award wins later, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has redefined what a musical can be, what a romantic comedy can be, what a female led series can be, what the CW’s branding for comedy could be, and how to talk about a plethora of sensitive, timely topics in a nuanced and informed way AND still be funny and very clever while doing so.

For all what it has acheived, it might be worth your time to tune in tonight at 9PM for the fourth and final season premiere on the CW (or tomorrow on the CW app).
