Mike Birbiglia’s The New One Will Be Coming to the Ahmanson in DTLA This Fall

Mike Birbiglia’s The New One Will Be Coming to the Ahmanson in DTLA This Fall

Mike Birbiglia doesn’t come through LA often and, even more rarely does a run of his award winning, critically acclaimed solo shows that have become Broadway shows and Netflix specials.

So, him doing a run of his Broadway show The New One at the Ahmanson at the gigantic Los Angeles Music Center in DTLA will probably be like seeing a shooting star we’d say. The run will go for a month from Oct. 23rd to Nov. 24th and individual tickets aren’t even on sale yet.

That being said, it’s the sort of show that will undoubtedly will sell out and you should be watching closely for when they go on sale (or, if you have the wallet for it, buy season passes for the LAMC).

OK, so you’ve seen comedy in someone’s backyard, in a salon, in a tattoo parlor, in the back of a U-Haul, and even in an abandoned parking lot. Where do you get your next underground comedy fix?

Well, how about in a gondola in, of all places, Long Beach that features the delightful hijinks of Kurt Braunohler, Natalie Palamides, and Christina Catherine Martinez, and the sweet and funny poetry of Derrick Brown?

Pretty out-of-left field, no?

Even we haven’t heard of or seen something like GondoLOLs and we have no doubt that Kurt, who jet-skied the entire Mississippi River for charity and Derrick, who, as a poet, has toured with Eugene Mirman, will be showing us all a night of comedy unlike any other.

GondoLOLs is coming to Gondola Getaway in Long Beach on Sat. Apr. 27th at 7PM. Tickets are $29 and you best go get them here.

The Jim Jarmusch Bill Murray Zombie Movie “The Dead Don’t Die” Is Coming to Theaters on June 14th

The Jim Jarmusch Bill Murray Zombie Movie “The Dead Don’t Die” Is Coming to Theaters on June 14th

Other than it’s a Jim Jarmusch zombie movie with Bill Murray and a cast including “…Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Chloë Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, Caleb Landry Jones, Rosie Perez, Iggy Pop, Sara Driver, RZA, Selena Gomez, Carol Kane, and Tom Waits,” there are few details as to what this might be story-wise or tonally.

However, based off Jarmusch’s last foray into the undead, Only Lovers Left Alive, that was a beautifully dark romantic comedy that happened to follow vampires, we’re going to guess that this might be in the ballpark (maybe even in the same cinematic universe, a Jarmusch-verse)? The playfulness in the title even feels like a follow-up/spiritual sequel to Only Lovers Left Alive.

In any case, expect gorgeous cinematography, a great soundtrack, and plenty of Bill Murray’s signature wry look relatively soon on Jun. 14th.

At this point, it takes quite a bit to raise our eyebrows when it comes to comedy.

That being said, this show Cheers The Show: The Show, a sketch showcase of several different versions of the opening to Cheers by very talented sketch writers and performers (including Genetra Tull, Elizabeth Schantz, John O’Toole Katy Fullan, Jackie Durruthy, Lee Barats, Dan Torson, Lauren Knutti, Ryan Kelly, Coil Danielle, Lorae Byas, Caitlin Linden, and producer/director/co-writer Brian Rodriguez-McGovern) is one of those shows. Some of the cold-opens nail the tone and vibe of Cheers and some are hilariously off the deep end.

In any case, you should catch the latest edition of this show next week at UCB Sunset (it’s a test show that could go on to be a recurring thing at UCB FYI). Get tickets here.

Please Enjoy Chad Daniels’ New Special “Dad Chaniels”

It takes quite the comedian to carve out a big place in comedy and not basing themselves in LA or NYC (though the Internet has made that a teensy bit easier in the last few years).

Chad Daniels is one such comedian that shows why with his second hour special, Dad Chaniels. He truly is a ‘Midwestern King of Comedy’ and has the polish, chops, sharp observations, and resolve to have such a title (not to mention that he is still based out of Minnesota). This new hour showcases Daniels in top form with clever observations (and even boldly doing a take on #MeToo that includes Aziz’s incident) and playful poking and prodding of the audience.

Get a taste of all of this in the trailer. If you’re digging, it you can go stream Dad Chaniels now on Amazon.

Nate Bargatze’s New Hour “The Tennesee Kid” Is a Great Sequel

First off, we should say that Nate Bargatze might have the calmest, most tranquil voices in comedy (save for Joe Pera, maybe?), which is part of what makes the twists in his humor so potent (as you’re lulled into a very relaxed state when listening to him).

Anyways, Nate offers up another hour of stories and observations in The Tennessee Kid that are as homespun as homespun can be and makes an hour that’s quite literally a sequel. He gives explicit follow-ups to bits from his last special to close out this special, which, outside of talking about family, almost never happens in comedy specials. Whether or not it’s his down-to-earth-ness that make fans clamor for the throughlines to Nate’s life and experiences, it’s hard not to be charmed by Bargatze yet again here.

Nate Bargatze: The Tennessee Kid is now streaming on Netflix.

It has been five years since What We Do In The Shadows came out as a movie and delighted many with its offbeat, dark, and also zany humor and started to put Taika Waititi’s name deservedly on the map.

Tonight, the TV adaptation, which has seemingly been in the works for quite a long time, has its series premiere on FX at 10PM. We have a pretty good feeling about the show, as you can see from this teaser, that much of the charm and verve of the original from Taika and Jemaine Clement seems to be well intact.

Carol Burnett Is Developing a Feature Adaptation of Her Book ‘Carrie and Me’ with Tina Fey at Focus Features

Someone’s wish for Carol Burnett and Tina Fey to do a movie or TV show together just came true (as we guess it probably would at some point).

We’ll wait and see if Focus Features gives a greenlight to this adaptation to Burnett’s book about her and her late daughter with Fey on board, but we have a hard time imagining this not going into production and getting a theatrical release of some kind.

There are no details as to whether Burnett and Fey will be on-screen together, but we can, at least for now, dream.

Klepper Trailer Has Jordan Klepper Drop His Daily Show/Opposition Character

Perhaps, in the interests of skirting around Malcolm Gladwell’s “Satire Paradox”, Jordan Klepper is leaving little room for interpretation in his latest comedy docu-series coming soon to Comedy Central, the eponymous Klepper.

Within it, Jordan will interview, explore, and in some cases, embed himself in marginalized communities that he wants to, according to this trailer, highlight positively (such as veterans, environmentalists, undocumented immigrants) as opposed to satirizing certain radical groups on The Daily Show or The Opposition by playing an overly pompous, bizarro version of himself.

Just see it for yourself here. If you’re into it, catch the premiere of Klepper’s second series on May 9th at Comedy Central.

PEN15 has been out for over a month and a half on Hulu and we hope, at this point, that you’ve binged the series out of an immediate love for Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle’s ride-or-die friendship. We got so invested them being BFFs that we truly felt anxious whenever they inevitably end up fighting.

Its heightened (though only slightly) portrayal of middle school falls perfectly in line with this wave of great coming-of-age dramedy (that includes Eighth Grade, Big Mouth, and Ladybird) that’s been really hitting hard over the last few years and Maya, co-creator Sam Zvibleman, and Anna really nail it. The attention to detail of the unique time right before 9/11 has just the right touch without feeling nostalgically manipulative.

Also, it can’t be stressed enough how much they both convincingly pull off playing 7th graders amongst age appropriate actors. Seriously, their performances should put them in Emmy consideration immediately.

It’s truly a beautiful show and you ought to give it a watch (or watch it again) ASAP.

Throughout the Conan O’Brien canon, some of his best moments will be when O’Brien stepped outside the studio and let his zaniness (and flailing arms and legs) loose.

From old timey baseball to goofing off across the planet to hanging with Hunter S. Thompson to wreaking havoc at Comic-Con to taking a commercial audition lessons, this portion (and it’s not even the whole archive of Conan yet) will undoubtedly take up the rest of your 2019.

To announce this, Team Coco and Conan did not disappoint and made the perfect sketch for the occasion. Please enjoy.

It’s always best when a show’s creators get to call it quits on their own terms and Schitt’s Creek has had an out-of-nowhere run that will probably be talked about for quite some time. Dan Levy posted this open letter from Eugene Levy and himself on Twitter today and while it may be sad to see it go, you have another season to look forward to and have time to get ready to say goodbye.

Also, and this might be a little premature to call, but we’d bet that dressing as Moira will be a pretty choice for Halloween this year.

It might be possible that John Early was destined for this role of playing an enfant terrible music video director.

Indeed, Early is brilliant as ‘John Brearly’ in this meta music video/short film for Alex Cameron’s single “Marlon Brando” directed by Jemima Kirke.
