Togetherness is riding high with its acclaim on the wave of grounded comedy exploring relationships on television. Also, series creators Mark and Jay Duplass have seem to hit the ground running when they gave TV a shot.

This season 2 teaser for Togetherness makes it look like they’ll be keeping all of that up when the season premiere rolls around on Sun. Feb. 21st at 10:30PM on HBO.

HBO Developing Comedy Centered Secret Humor Magazine at a Baptist University from Robert Askins, “Brotherhood”

December 6, 2015
Uncategorized
brotherhood, hbo, jonathan krisel, robert askins

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

Sounds like it fit right in next to Veep and Silicon Valley.

All of the high concept comedy over at HBO largely shows the shaky inner-workings of giant, taken-for-granted institutions like the office of Vice President or the tech sector.

Their latest addition to their development slate, Brotherhood, seems to follow suit by following a secret, rebellious organization at a Baptist university bent on partying and circulating their humor magazine. The project comes from acclaimed playwright  of Hand to God, Robert Askins and will be directed by Jonathan Krisel whose work you’ve seen on Portlandia and Man Seeking Woman.

Hopefully, we’ll see if it makes it to pilot or series soon.

Coca-Cola’s My Coke Rewards let Grant Lyon run loose as a some dude who is really excited about this time of year, perhaps too much, and want to spread his oversaturated holiday spirit to passersby walking along the Santa Monica Promenade.

If you run into Grant decked out in Christmas lights, etc., it’s hard to not feel a least little more into holiday season.

Hopefully, we’re wrong and some other network or maybe streaming service picks it up and Dave Krumholtz will get don all the amazing prosthetics and voice of what’s a representation of so many of our grandmas these days, Gigi.

David Letterman’s alma mater Ball State is where you’ll be able to reminisce about the last era of The Late Show as Dave has donated the props, portions of his set (at least the parts that weren’t thrown away), and his Emmys that he won during his legendary tenure at CBS.

No word on if they’ll have a exhibit where you’ll get to throw out Crispin Glover after a near kick to the face, but you can always keep your fingers crossed.

If you’ve been looking to take a trip fantastic through the mere words of a stand-up comedian, look no further than Ryan Singer and his latest album Immortal For Now.

Singer has a real talent for delving incredibly deep in his stand-up into what might seem like introspective esoterica about time, space, Gargamel’s origin story, the mating rituals of praying mantises, etc. but making it all accessible and straight up funny.

If you’re willing to take a journey through the comedic mind of Ryan Singer, and oh what a journey it is, we highly urge you to pick up Immortal For Now, just released from Stand-Up Records.

It’s like we’re playing ‘Christmas Present Madlibs for Comedy Nerds’.

All the names above, Kumail, Emily, Apatow, and Michael Showalter, are essentially buzzwords for those in-the-comedy-know, especially when it comes to The Meltdown, Stella, and Undeclared. Now they’re all teaming up with a script from Nanjiani and Gordon with Apatow as well as the very accomplished producer Barry Mendel attached to produce and Showalter directing.

FilmNation is set to release and finance the production of what is called Big Sick and that’s all that we know about the project at this time. Still, just knowing all the people involved here is good enough for you to go along with whatever movie they’re cooking up.

On top of it being a really hysterical dark romantic comedy series, You’re The Worst has managed to touch on issues like depression in a grounded way that’s also, ironically, not depressing.

Case in point from this latest season: Jimmy and friends trying to help an emotionally catatonic Gretchen.

It should go without saying that we’re happy that there’s a third season of this in the works.

This year has been a good one for comedy on The Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Dick Gregory, Will Ferrell, and Melissa McCarthy all got their name encased by a star on the world famous Hollywood Walk of Fame earlier in 2015.

Now, the absolutely deserving Amy Poehler has gotten her star on the Walk of Fame following what has been a blisteringly great time for her career. Whether it be Parks and Recreation, The Golden Globes, Smart Girls, Broad City, and more, Poehler has made a wonderful mark on Hollywood and we’ve all been the better for it. Honestly, we can only imagine that Amy’s getting a star now because she’s been too busy to go through the process to get one.

The ceremony took place yesterday, so now you can go on Hollywood Blvd. and find it.

Connor Ratliff & Mikey Erg Made a Great Album to Accompany Holiday Season, Especially If You Don’t Like Getting Religious About It

Connor Ratliff, who you’ve probably seen on The Chris Gethard Show or the great web series I’m Too Fragile For This, teamed up with another TCGS alum, Mikey Erg to make a collection of holiday music that isn’t worn down by religious traditions that come around this time of year, but is still very festive.

So, that project turned into a whole album, well a sort of a novella of an album as there are 8 songs spanning 12 minutes.

Still, The Spirit of Ratliff is pretty great and really hits a sweet spot of endearing and funny without going overboard like so much holiday music does. “No One Wants a Pizza on Christmas Day” is a perfect example of how Ratliff and Erg pull that off.

You can get Spirit of Ratliff off of Bandcamp for $7 and you should know that it’s actually a soundtrack to what will be an upcoming Xmas special with Connor.

Get a taste of that with the music video for XMAS is the BEST.

A Phil Hartman Biopic Is in The Works

It’s going to be called Nice Guy Phil.

Jason Priestley of Beverly Hills, 90210 fame is set to direct a feature film written by Jonas Chernick based on the life of the beloved Phil Hartman who we know from such things as SNL, NewsRadio, and The Simpsons (the show where listing his credits like we just did as the character Troy McClure was a trademark bit). Actor Darran Davis is set to take on the role of Hartman.

Hartman’s estate that survives him has been heavily involved, so we hopefully makes for a worthy picture honoring the late comedian.

So, that means we have a both a Richard Pryor and Phil Hartman biopic in the works as of right now.

Billy Eichner has upped the ante of a dollar to answering his subjective pop culture trivia to strangers on the street with the addition of a gospel choir singing the praises of a correct answer.

What they sing for a wrong answer is equally as great.

Watch it here.
