Paul F. Tompkins Makes The Best Points Ever About Political Correctness in Comedy

In a video for site Big Think, Paul F. Tompkins succinctly and clearly explains, better than anyone has that we can remember, political correctness’ role in comedy and how it helps rather than hinders the art form.

Watch and hopefully this’ll be the final word on the matter because it’s a damn good one.

Bringing in Simpsons veterans is always a good call.

The great Dana Gould who used to write on The Simpsons and Hank Azaria who is one of the stalwart voice talents at The Simpsons both have series order for their own original series over at IFC.

Gould’s series, called Stan Against Evil, follows an old, crotchety sheriff that is brought out of retirement to fight demons with is female sucessor. Azaria’s series, called Brockmire, centers on a disgraced big time baseball announcer that attempts a comeback in the minor leagues.

Look for both series on IFC’s schedule soon.

Recent FCC Vote Pushes Us Closer To the Merging of Live and Internet TV

(via The Verge)

Right now, you have to get the cable box of whatever cable company that you’re a subscriber of. Thus, it’s at the sole discretion of that cable company as to what curated, contractually-agreed-upon programming that they’ll offer.

This vote changes might just change all of that and could allow streaming services and cable TV to co-exist meaning watching Broad City and BoJack Horseman on the same box might soon be a reality.

This recent FCC vote in favor, three-to-two, of a proposal to break the stranglehold that cable TV companies have on the cable boxes that subscribers have to use might usher the future of TV a little sooner than anticipated. The proposal will allow third party companies to develop their own set top boxes with the ability to subscribe to various cable TV services.

If passed, any number of set top boxes that are meant for streaming TV that exists exclusively online could potentially be expanded to include live television and bring another drastic change to the already drastically changing landscape of television.

Still, the proposal has to go through a final vote and the decision’s effects would have to be seen, but it’s hard to see this as anything other than a good thing.

You might have the chance to press fewer buttons to switch fewer devices in order to watch the latest episodes of The Simpsons and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

John Oliver and Last Week Tonight Highlight Many Ridiculous Abortion Laws That Exist in 2016

When John Oliver very succinctly picks apart pressing and controversial issues of our time presenting great punchlines to unfortunate happenings within said issues, you can be sure that he’ll balance the tone with something adorable at the end.

In last night’s Last Week Tonight, when covering abortion laws in such a manner, he indeed offered a cute palate cleanser with a caveat for a certain segment of pro-lifers.

The Jimmy Dore Show at TYT Network went to Las Vegas right as the primary election for democrats in Nevada was being held to witness the city’s caucus.

His findings are both pretty damn funny, but also, at the same time, saddening as caution is being thrown to the wind in such a hotly contested election.

Please Enjoy a Great, Timely Sketch with Jen Kirkman About “Bernie Bros”, The Point of Which Was Proven by Jen Being Trolled Online Before It Even Aired

On this week’s No, You Shut Up! with Paul F. Tompkins, Jen Kirkman got to do a sketch that was commenting on a specific portion of Bernie Sanders supporters that frequently engage in rather misogynistic discourse when talking about Hillary Clinton, otherwise referred to now as “Bernie Bros”.

Before this Bernie Bro Zone sketch even aired a few days ago, Jen got flack from many Bernie Bros, on top of her usual collection of Internet trolls, for just screen shots of said sketch.

This lead to both having to vigorously defend her position on the matter as well as an extended row of retweets by Jen highlighting the unfortunate way Clinton is talked about, which is many times adjacent to how Trump talks about other candidates in general.

Just look at Jen’s timeline on Twitter and you’ll go down a rabbit hole you didn’t know that went that far.

Though some may unfortunately not realize this, the backlash sort of proves Jen’s point that she made in the Bernie Bro Zone in the first place.

Kelly Oxford and Molly McNearney Are Developing Semi-Autobiographical Sitcom at TV Land

(via Deadline)

Quietly, TV Land is building a formidable line-up of comedies.

Already, TV Land has gotten critical acclaim for The Jim Gaffigan Show and Younger. They’ve also got the intriguing single camera sitcom following George Lopez coming up and now they’ve added a project from author and Twitter giant Kelly Oxford and Jimmy Kimmel Live’s co-head writer Molly McNearney.

This project will follow both of their lives, which is a slight turn in terms of all the sitcoms that currently centers on the lives of comedians (Louie, Master of None, Dice, the aforementioned Lopez, etc.). Focusing on the lives of writers, being women in comedy, and best friends should make this show stand out should it go to series.

Two different generations of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart got to go head-to-head in the recurring Friday Night Fights segment last night as John Hodgman and Late Show host Stephen Colbert made arguments for who would win in a fictitious battle (ex. Big Foot vs. Tooth Fairy).

For those familiar with Tournament of Nerds, you know the drill.

Intellectual, absurdist sparks did fly in their clash, but make sure you take note of Hodgman’s entrance.

They’re calling it the Day of Ha, which, according to Seeso experts, has a “rich history”.

In any case, you’re going to probably want to block out the whole day for binge watching as Seeso has a whole lot of great stuff on there.

Last Night, Jerry Seinfeld Got Steve Martin Back on Stage to Do Stand-Up

(via Vulture)

It may be a one time thing or something that happens when a very specific alignment of the planets happens, but it still happened.

One of the greatest comedians of all time will always be Steve Martin. The fact that he’s still out and performing regularly, but doing so as a bluegrass musician rather than a comedian is a fact that many still have a hard time grasping with. Whether you got to see Martin when he was the biggest deal in comedy decades ago or got to fall in love with his comedy after the fact, the desire to see Martin on stage and do a set of stand-up comedy will probably never go away.

Apparently, off of losing a bet with Jerry Seinfeld, Martin opened up Seinfeld’s residency at The Beacon Theatre last night and according to Vulture, he has still got it (not that it should surprise any of you).

There’s no telling whether it will happen again or not, but let’s all just revel in the fact that it happened anyway and it did not disappoint.

Based on what was a blog post written by Aaron Bleyaert, then adapted into a short film directed by the great Ben Berman, How To Lose Weight In 4 Easy Steps! takes what could be a clickbait headline and turns into something very heartfelt and funny. In fact, it got enough buzz to screen at this year’s Sundance

Also, SNL’s Beck Bennett stars and Conan O’Brien makes a pretty sweet cameo.

Someone at FX really knows how to pick ‘em.

Following Falk’s You’re The Worst, which has gotten critical acclaim from the get go and has continued with that through its second season, Stephen is teaming up with the wondrous Cameron Esposito in developing a single camera comedy that exhibits a juxtaposition of the lives of sisters, one straight and one gay and both in their 30s. It will be based on Esposito’s life and could make for a really great addition to FX’s already beloved comedy line-up.

In addition to her debut hour special coming to Seeso next month, 2016 is looking more and more like an Cameron Esposito banner year.

Honestly, we have a hard time believing this is Dwayne Kennedy’s debut album as he has been so funny for such a long time. In any case, we’re glad that he has an album now, “Oh No, It’s Dwayne Kennedy”.

There is a certain great, classic feel to Dwayne’s stand-up, yet it doesn’t feel dated or out-of-touch at all, even when he ribs being on Twitter. Much of that is due to his particular angle on the black experience that’s exquisitely composed and well thought out, but also hysterically pulls no punches.

Get Oh No, It’s Dwayne Kennedy on Bandcamp or iTunes now.

Apparently, it’s $9 for black folks and “it depends” for white folks.

Amazon Doubles Down on Jill Soloway and Orders “I Love Dick” Pilot

Uncategorized

(via Deadline)

This is a good, common sense move by Amazon Studios.

Jill Soloway is responsible for a good percentage of Amazon’s critical acclaim from her series Transparent. So, it only stands to reason that the online giant would get her working on another project.

This time around, Soloway is adapting a 90s novel called I Love Dick by Chris Kraus, which follows a marriage unraveling, the birth of an artist, and an intriguing professor with the name Dick in the backdrop of Marfa, Texas.

It would seem that TV now has legitimate auteurs and they have more freedom than ever to do what they want because of a certain track record.

“Review” on Comedy Central to Have Short 3rd and Final Season

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

Rather than having to bend the rules of the universe they have created, Andy Daly and the team at Review are letting Forrest MacNeil get some peace… probably.

Review is one of the shows that is at the core of Comedy Central’s current renaissance, both in the writing, execution, and the fantastic work done by the show’s star Andy Daly. So, they’re going to preserve the integrity of the show and have an abbreviated 3rd season that might be as short as three episodes or even shown as a movie to tie up the mess that MacNeil has made of his life over and over again.

While it’s sad to see Review come to a close, it is great that Daly is ending it on his terms.
