While You Might Be Sad @midnight Is Going Away, You’ll Probably Enjoy Asterios Kokkinos’ Sci-Fi Game Show Podcast “Science Friction”

Since we started things at TCB, we’ve always dug whatever Asterios Kokkinos is doing, which happens to be an unbelievable myriad of innovative ways to do comedy in his specific niche.

His latest endeavor, Science Friction, happens to be a game show podcast that’s a sci-fi sort version of @midnight with a tad bit of Billy on the Street thrown in. Asterios has contestants from the worlds comedy and sci-fi compete in trivia that’s entirely biased to his very, very strong opinions on Star Wars, Blade Runner, The Matrix, having robots for pets etc. etc. The extremely arbitrary nature of his points awarding system is also fun element of the show.

Even if you’re not that into sci-fi, which one of the regular contestants is not, it’s still pretty damn entertaining to see how heated Asterios gets.

Give it a listen (and maybe subscribe) to Science Friction on iTunes or Google Play.

Lisa Hanawalt’s Latest Work, Coyote Doggirl, Will Be a Graphic Novel About a Half Dog, Half Coyote That Has a Whole Lot of Attitude

Lisa Hanawalt, who we hope you would know and love from her work on BoJack Horseman, her book Hot Dog Taste Test, and podcast with Emily Heller, Baby Geniuses, will be bringing us all a full fledged graphic novel, Coyote Doggirl.

It’ll a bit Western, but with Hanawalt’s personal touch of anthropomorphized animals that go through complex human emotions set in a vibrant color palette. We have no doubt that it’ll be something that you’ll read and run through a whole gamut of feelings.

Look for Coyote Doggirl’s release in fall of 2018 from Drawn & Quarterly.

Taking a cue from Chris Pine stumbling into Themyscira in Wonder Woman, Conan O’Brien kicked off his week at the San Diego Comic Con in similar fashion with the ladies of Wild Horses (Stephanie Allynne, Mary Holland, Erin Whitehead, and Lauren Lapkus) and Ego Nwodim.

As Team Coco is currently responsible for some of the best sketches in late night, they don’t disappoint with this opening. Enjoy it here.

After recently transplanting to LA, we’ve very much enjoyed Megan Gailey’s presence on the scene. Megan is a fantastic stand-up, but she also brings the worlds of comedy, feminism, and sports together quite nicely as well.

In fact, she’s putting on an entire show, Good Sport with Megan Gailey, this Saturday, July 22nd at UCB Franklin at 10PM where she takes on the world of sports from her very unfiltered, yet charming perspective. Her guests for this inaugural show will be Anthony Jeselnik, Mike Lawrence and Kara Klenk.

Tickets are $12 and you can (and really should) get them here.

From the humblest of beginnings, The Chris Gethard Show has made it to its 3rd season as a full fledged TV show on cable television while circling back to its devil may care, public access roots by broadcasting completely live (w/10 second delay).

Hopefully, you’ll get a sense of the beautifully controlled chaos that Gethard wrangles for his show and definitely see way more risks be taken than what happens on SNL.

Watch the season premiere of The Chris Gethard Show, as well as a bit of TV history, on Thursday, August 3rd at 8PM PST/11PM EST on TruTV.

Chris Hardwick and Comedy Central Agree to End @midnight at 600 Episodes

Yes, @midnight has made it to 600 episodes. In its time, it has made an indelible mark on Twitter with #HashtagWars, influenced the direction of game shows in the age of the Internet, and highlighted many great comedians by giving their very first TV appearance.

Alas, both network and host agree that the comedy game show has run its course leaving an open slot for Comedy Central up at midnight after the show’s final week on July 31st.

There isn’t any official word on what might take that slot as of yet, though we hope it’ll be a bit of departure from the pairing of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Jordan Klepper’s new show at 11PM and 11:30PM.

See James Franco Channel Tommy Wiseau in Teaser for “The Disaster Artist”

First came the cult best/worst movie The Room from Tommy Wiseau. Then, came the book about the making of The Room called The Disaster Artist by Greg Sestero. With so many different facets to the myth of both Wiseau and The Room, the making of feature film adaptation of why any of this happened seemed inevitable.

Now, that time is here as James Franco’s movie based on The Disaster Artist is set for a theatrical release on December 1st.

Franco, as it would appear, seems to do a pretty good job as Wiseau.

See for yourself in the trailer (and also enjoy a supporting cast of Seth Rogen, Dave Franco, Paul Scheer, and Charlyne Yi).

Difficult People Season 3′s Trailer Hints at Wildest, Albeit Still Cynical, Season Yet

The crux of Difficult People relies on the mutual interest of Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner‘s characters standing from a distance to revel in their cynical judgment of others.

With that said, it looks like the third season of the show delightfully coerces them into possibly their most brightly colored misadventures yet.

See for yourself here, then look for episodes of season 3 of Difficult People to start streaming on Tuesday, August 8th.

Watch Ari Shaffir’s Double Negative, Now Streaming on Netflix

All those years of hosting This Is Not Happening have rubbed off on Ari Shaffir in the best way possible.

You can see the effect on his latest special, Double Negative, which just started streaming on Netflix. The way in which he weaves personal observations and stories in, through, and around a single Tinder-related incident that befell a friend is subtle, but very impressive. You almost don’t even realize he has been circling and off-shooting from the same point for the whole hour until the end of it. Therein lies Ari’s detailed, seamless craftsmanship.

So, with that said, give Ari’s Double Negative a watch when you can.

Top American Late Night Talk Show Host Stephen Colbert Goes on Russia’s Top (and Only) Late Night Talk Show “Evening Urgant”

Not only is this an entertaining segment where Stephen Colbert gets to cause a bit of mischief by being on Russian state-run television, but a great, albeit brief, look into what comedy, specifically late night, is like in Russia with Ivan Urgant’s “Evening Urgant”.

Urgant doesn’t really push the buttons of those in power like Colbert does, but their games are a little edgier than Fallon, who Urgant uses as a frame of reference.

Please watch, enjoy, and learn here.

Many of the best moments of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert come from when Colbert gets to really lean into political satire (i.e. interviews and segments rather than just monologue jokes).

This week, aptly dubbed “Russia Week”, Colbert will have plenty of that as we’ll all get to see bits of his trip to Russia starting tonight.

You’ll be able to see what Stephen got away with at 11:35PM on CBS.
