Russian Federation Moves to Formally Ban Zelensky’s Comedy in Russia

Any time free speech is limited, it’s a dangerous sign of what’s to come and a terrifying reminder of where you already are. When it comes to banning or censoring comedy, that’s even degree further beyond the pale and almost a clear admission that people in charge are engaging in such nefarious deeds since they dare not risk any sort of inevitable criticism in any public form.

Russian “President” Vladimir Putin has already made it a crime to report Russia’s wanton invasion of Ukraine as a war instead of a “special military operation”, but has now gone further as his administration has formally banned the comedy of Ukrainian President and current world hero, Volodomyr Zelensky, from the “cultural agenda” of Russia. Essentially, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu is claiming that continual access to Zelensky’s performances in movies and TV (namely, Servant of the People) in Russia undermines the authority of what Putin and his cronies are trying to accomplish. There is such rich irony in a ban like this as this is clearly motivated by fear, specifically a fear that any dissent could ruin Putin’s plan, while Putin is the one who struck first against Ukraine. It’s pretty basic knowledge that the best way to fuel criticism is to actively and aggressively silence your critics.

We can only hope that this is one of many cowardly moves by Putin that will inspire more Russian nationals desert Putin and depose him in some way.

Even Though Russia Has Banned the Release of “Death of Stalin”, a Moscow Theater Screened It Anyway and Police Then Raided the Theater

Even Though Russia Has Banned the Release of “Death of Stalin”, a Moscow Theater Screened It Anyway and Police Then Raided the Theater

For how seriously the Russian government is reacting to Armando Iannucci’s latest work, they sure look like they are part of another Armando Iannucci project about how dumb government censorship can really look.

It just goes to show you that one of comedy/satire’s best weapons is how it often automatically makes fools of those who try to cover it up.

Top American Late Night Talk Show Host Stephen Colbert Goes on Russia’s Top (and Only) Late Night Talk Show “Evening Urgant”

Not only is this an entertaining segment where Stephen Colbert gets to cause a bit of mischief by being on Russian state-run television, but a great, albeit brief, look into what comedy, specifically late night, is like in Russia with Ivan Urgant’s “Evening Urgant”.

Urgant doesn’t really push the buttons of those in power like Colbert does, but their games are a little edgier than Fallon, who Urgant uses as a frame of reference.

Please watch, enjoy, and learn here.

Breaking the fourth wall, rolling with whatever comes along, clever ridiculousness, and Andrés du Bouchet are just some of the reasons why some of best late night sketches are on Conan.

Watch du Bouchet’s latest turn as a recently defected Russian ‘kompromat’ (state sponsored blackmailer) here.

Gay Rights Comedy “Pride” Playing in Russia

Apparently, it’s just got a really stern rating in the theaters where it’s playing.

While there are very many homophobic laws currently in place in Russia, the very funny Pride from last year is screening, apparently to favorable reception.

The film from last year tells the he story of gay activists in the U.K. joining forces with miners in the 80s and is a pitch perfect feel good period piece dramedy. Many pro-gay movies apparently get protested in Russia, but Pride hasn’t seen any protests yet.

We can only hope that is the start of trend in Russian cinemas.

Man oh man, when John Oliver does an interview, it’s a damn fine one.

This week’s Last Week Tonight ran a little longer than usual because, well, Oliver and co. scored a huge interview with the one and only Edward Snowden all the way in Russia. John pulled off the balance between legitimately poignant questions and questions about hot pockets and nude photos.

It’s clear that Oliver is accomplishing his apparent mission to talk, at length and in-depth, topics that we would hate talking about outside of a focus group or a college course and also be thoroughly entertaining while doing so.

Clear out 33:15 of your day today and watch yet another historic moment for Last Week Tonight.

Having been a master at dark comedy for some time now, Martin McDonagh, is getting an entire festival in his honor. The writer/director of In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths as well as one of the most accomplished playwrights of our time having written and directed such plays as The Pillowman and A Behanding in Spokane will be honored in, of all places, Perm, Siberia in Russia.

Apparently, McDonagh is a big hit in Siberia and the local theater U Mosta is reportedly the only theater to stage all of his plays. The Martin McDonagh Festival will run from Oct. 7th-10th and feature performances and screenings of his plays and films.

So, you might want to get your plane tickets and passport for this.

The Geckos That John Oliver Had Us Rally Behind Passed Away While in Space

When Russia had lost contact with a space vessel they had sent up with geckoes for the sole purpose of seeing how they would mate in space, John Oliver and Last Week Tonight made a rally cry to go get those geckoes.

Joy was had when they reestablished contact, but, alas, when Russia was looking in the vessel upon landing, they found that the geckoes had died.

So, of course, Oliver had a very fitting tribute to the space sex geckoes on Last Week Tonight complete with duet with A Great Big World.

The geckos that Russia sent into space to observe while mating, then lost contact with have been found. John Oliver issued a call to arms for the whole world to urge Russia to #GoGetThoseGeckos on Last Week Tonight and now those geckos have apparently been found.

#WeGotThoseGeckos is now official as you can hear from Oliver himself, even though how responsible the hashtag was for their recovery is up for debate.

John Oliver Wants Us To Save Space Geckos That Are Trying to Get It On

Russia’s been up to a lot lately, but, for the lack of its homophobia or relevance to Ukraine, you might have overlooked Russia losing contact with a space vessel that was housing mating geckos for observation.

That’s why John Oliver on Last Week Tonight (as well as a plenty of celebrities like Julia Louis Dreyfus and Patrick Stewart) says that the least humanity can do is to tell Russia to “Go get those geckos!”

Last Week Tonight Covers Ukraine vs. Russia at Eurovision Song Competition

While the tensions between Ukraine and Russia should be bigger news to us, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver lets us all in on an even lesser known facet of this ordeal by Americans: The Eurovision Song Contest. It’s European musical competition where countries face off to vie for the best song and Russia faced off the Ukraine. The details of that are amazing.

Also, Oliver does a pretty great job making fun of Putin’s new commemorative coin for Crimea. Watch it all here.

Taking from the numerous complaints about the conditions of room and board for non-athletes at The Sochi Winter Olympics, Conan O’Brien and Yuri Tamarov, Sochi hotel PR rep/Andrés du Bouchet make a classic sketch.

How is it classic? Well, when Conan uses the superlative “dumbest” to describe something that just happened when the sketch is over, it’s pretty safe to say it’s classic.

Watch the sketch here.
