Lifetime Orders Euthanasia Dramedy ‘Mary Kills People’

Lifetime Orders Euthanasia Dramedy ‘Mary Kills People’

Like Weeds, but replace marijuana with mercy killing?

Of the recent series orders, a dramedy focused on underground euthanasia for profit, Mary Kills People, stands out. Also, this might be a nice bridge for Lifetime between the melodrama that it’s well known for and the comedy arena that they’ve been trying to enter in for a few years now.

It’s set to premiere next year and, if the timing is right, will probably pair nicely with that Bill Hader hitman comedy on HBO.

Conan O’Brien To Host Nobel Peace Prize Concert

We sure hope that they do a great, very daft bit about Conan doing this on their next episode.

Conan O’Brien will indeed be hosting the concert for the Nobel Peace Prize in the middle of December in Norway and you will be able to stream it on YouTube.

One can only imagine that the are other Nobel Prize concerts that are jealous, right?

Chris Rock Will Do Two Comedy Specials at Netflix for $40 Million

How often will Netflix be outspending HBO?

When it comes to Chris Rock comedy specials, it almost went without saying that HBO was the place that it would be.

That all changed today with Rock reportedly getting a $40 million deal for two comedy specials.

The times have indeed changed and Netflix not only is gaining in on HBO prestige with their increasing number of critically acclaimed and award winning series and specials, but it seems like they’ve got the money to keep this pace up.

This deal puts Rock on the Forbes list for top earning comedians for the next two years by the way.

Above all, we’re happy to hear that the latest stand-up from Chris Rock will be two new hours rather than just a host monologue or a couple of minutes as an awards show presenter.

TBS Wants in on Aubrey Plaza’s Nightmarish Visions and Orders Pilot of Her “Nightmare Time”

Someone who goes by @evilhag on Twitter is bound to have some really fun nightmares.

Horror comedy/horror comedy is on the rise as a genre hybrid with anything from Scream Queens to Ash vs. Evil Dead to the upcoming Stan Against Evil carving out their own niche in TV.

Since TBS went through their rebranding earlier this year, they are all in on the high concept for their scripted series. So, a horror comedy anthology series from Aubrey Plaza along with the help of writers Darcy Fowler, Kieran Valla, and Seth Kirschner sounds like a really good get for them.

Anyone else imagining Plaza narrating a scary, but absurd camp fire story?

Fox Orders Two Specials of ‘Showtime At The Apollo’  with Steve Harvey as Host

Fox Orders Two Specials of ‘Showtime At The Apollo’  with Steve Harvey as Host

Get ready for a whole new subset memes of Steve Harvey’s facial expressions.

Showtime at The Apollo is just 18 years short of a centennial. As such, it has seen so many stars hit its stage at the beginning of their career only to go on to fame and fortune. Steve Harvey was actually one of those stars.

Given the popularity of talent variety competitions on television, it only makes common sense that Showtime At The Apollo would get televised nationally by some network, especially given its reputation for booing performers that don’t get the crowd on their side.

We’ll see how much of that Fox lets on the two special they’ve ordered, but whatever Steve Harvey’s face, a thing that people have become obsessed with his hosting of Family Feud, after someone gets booed off stage should be pretty priceless.

Look for the specials to premiere on December 5th and early next year.

Joe DeRosa Is Taping His Comedy Central Hour Special at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery Tomorrow

It’s free to go and you won’t have to be worrying about hearing the sound of an outdoor movie.

Oh, also, Joe DeRosa is so damn hysterical and you absolutely shouldn’t miss him taping an hour long comedy special.

There is a taping at 7:30PM and 9:30PM and you can reserve your tickets at the link above.

Seeso Orders a ‘Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson’ Behind The Scenes Series from Paul Reiser and David Steven Simon

Called “There’s Johnny!”, one will probably wonder how it stacks up next to The Larry Sanders Show.

Paul Reiser and David Steven Simon who worked together on Mad About You are teaming up again to write a show that focuses on what happened with the legendary Johnny Carson behind the scenes of his run at The Tonight Show.

David Gordon Green, who Reiser works with on Red Oaks, is set to produce with both Paul and Simon and might bring some very intriguing comedic flavor to this show.

We’ll find out what this ends up being on 2017 when it starts streaming on Seeso.

Jon Hamm and John Slattery Listed as Understudies for Nick Kroll and John Mulaney’s “Oh, Hello”

It looks like Kroll and Mulaney made sure to make every single square inch of their Broadway run funny.

In the programs for Oh, Hello on Broadway, both John Slattery and Jon Hamm are actually listed in the programs as the understudies for Gil Faizon and George St. Geegland played by Nick Kroll and John Mulaney respectively. Leave it to Kroll and Mulaney to find some “suitable” understudies.

Slattery and Hamm have yet to really step in for a night of Oh, Hello. Also, it’s hard to imagine anyone inhabiting the roles of Gil and George, but imagining Slattery and Hamm doing Too Much Tuna is pretty adorable.

Starz Renews Ash Vs. Evil Dead for a Third Season

If you were just looking for a sequel to Army of Darkness/Evil Dead, looks you got something way better.

Not that we’re surprised, but Starz seems to like having the horror-action-comedy Ash vs. Evil Dead around. Announced at NY Comic-Con this past weekend, a third season of the series has just been ordered up, which means that several hours of blood, guts, and Ash one-liners have been made and more are coming. A single sequel would only be two hours and change at best and who’s to say that a movie wouldn’t sprout of the newly revived franchise.

ABC Orders Put Pilot From Morgan Murphy & Tim Story

Family having to return/leave home is the basis for an entire sub genre of sitcoms. While that theme is endlessly relatable, tackling it now from an intriguing, original, and engaging angle is a very formidable challenge.

That being said, we hope that ABC and Tim Story will let the hysterical Morgan Murphy push for a whip-smart sitcom that doesn’t pull any punches in this put pilot.

Take note that some of the best and darkest jokes on Two Broke Girls are penned by Murphy and if you’ve ever seen her stand-up, you’ll know that there is potential for her to make something really worth watching.

‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ TV Adaptation Now Being Developed by Anonymous Content

Between Falling Water, Dream Corp LLC, and this, it looks like TV is getting back into dreams.

Maybe it was a result of seeing Falling Water, a dream-within-a-dream mystery thriller, the trippy procedural comedy Dream Corp LLC make their way to TV that sparked the development of an Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind TV series by Anonymous Content. In any case, we’ll be curious to see who they would get to fill the ambitious creative shoes of Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry, who, at this point, are not attached to this project.

On top of that, getting leads Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet seems like a pipe dream, but, with this golden age of television peaking right now, it’s probably less of a pipe dream than it would have been a few years ago.

‘@midnight with Chris Hardwick’ Renewed Through 2017

For now, @midnight will also stay at 11:30PM.

The show that Chris Hardwick hosts the most will now continue for another 40 weeks in a season 4 cycle going through 2017.

What we’re excited to see come out of this is the potential for more experimentation a la that week where Anthony Atamanuik as Donald Trump “sponsored” the show.

Comedy Central is leaving it open as to whether they’ll go back to airing at midnight or 11:30PM. In either case, as this year has shown, the show should be fine.

‘The Simpsons Are Making a VR Couch Gag for 600th Episode

The beginning of this year’s Simpsons Treehouse of Horror, which will be the 600th episode of the show, will be kicked off by a couch gag entitled “Planet of the Couches”. It’ll be available to watch in Google Cardboard and in 360 in Google Spotlight Stories (just in case you don’t want to wear a VR headset).

That episode will air on Sunday, October 16th.

It’ll probably feel like that one time when Homer found his way into our dimension as a cartoon wandering around our reality.

Richard Pryor Biopic Gets Back on Track as Lee Daniels Returns to Direct and Jay Z Is Set to Produce

We guess that you should really keep your fingers crossed this time?

For so many years, plenty of people have justifiably tried to make a Richard Pryor biopic, but have gotten derailed for a multitude of reasons such as who owns the rights to his story and how they’re willing to let it be told. We thought that Lee Daniels stepping in and The Weinstein Company getting involved would finally see a movie based on the life of the legendary comedian reach the big screen. Yet, Lee Daniels, who was attached as director, had a scheduling conflict with his hit series Empire and he had to leave the project, once again, in limbo.

Though you should save your excitement for when you read the title of this movie on a marquee, it was announced that Daniels will return as director and, additionally, Jay Z will produce. There’s no way that this Pryor biopic isn’t getting made, right? Let’s hope, if it does indeed get released, that it does Pryor justice.

BBC Orders Comedy ‘Motherland’ Co-Written by Sharon Horgan to Series

Sharon Horgan has quietly built a trans-atlantic comedy empire.

On top of having a couple of seasons of the much lauded Catastrophe under her belt with Rob Delaney and overseeing the new HBO series Divorce, Sharon Horgan has co-written a brand new show with Graham Linehan, Helen Linehan and Holly Walsh called Motherland that just a series order from the BBC.

It’ll be a more unfiltered take, probably a la Catastrophe, on motherhood and it probably won’t be too long before the show finds its way stateside.

Sony Pictures Classics Lands Distribution for “The Comedian” Where Robert De Niro Plays an Insult Comedian

So, he’s just going to be a little less crazy than De Niro’s Rupert Pupkin from The King of Comedy.

Not only is there a lot of buzz on the order of award nominations around this latest De Niro vehicle, The Comedian, but he’ll play an insult comic that has to face his own demons and grow, which definitely has our interest peaked. Hannibal Buress, Gilbert Gottfried and Jim Norton will be featured as fellow stand-ups in the movie and the insults were written by none other than the Roastmaster General himself, Jeff Ross. We haven’t seen a trailer or a TV spot, but it’s kind of hard to not have a bit of a good feeling about The Comedian.

Look for limited release from Sony Pictures Classics at the end of this year/beginning of next year.

Germany Drops Case Against Comedian Jan Bohmermann Charged With “Insulting” Authoritarian Turkish President with a Poem

Germany Drops Case Against Comedian Jan Bohmermann Charged With “Insulting” Authoritarian Turkish President with a Poem

Thankfully, Bohmermann didn’t suffer the same fate as one Mike Ward.

It’s hard to not take freedom of speech for granted in the U.S. You can pretty much speak freely here, especially when you compare our free speech laws to those around the world. If you don’t look at what those laws are and how they’re enforced elsewhere, saying what you want in the good ol’ U.S. of A is just assumed to be the norm.

In this particular case, German comedian Jan Bohmermann presented a satirical poem on television suggesting that the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has sex with goats. The Turkish government did not take to those remarks kindly and brought Bohmermann up on charges of an old German law that prohibits insults of foreign government representatives. Luckily, the court taking on the case concluded that it was a joke, shouldn’t be taken seriously, and didn’t find Bohmermann guilty of the charges levied against him.

Though the case was dropped, let this be one of the thousands of cautionary tales of a potential Trump presidency. Already, Trump has said he’d open up libel laws so it would be easier to sue members of the press that he thought were making up stories about him and even briefly had a filed lawsuit against Bill Maher for a joke that speculated about Trump’s mother having sex with an orangutan.

If you care about free speech and comedy, you might want to make sure the much more despicable version of Biff Tannen doesn’t win next month.

Honest Trailers and Jimmy Kimmel Live Win Streamy Awards

This past weekend, The annual Streamy Awards honoring anything and everything that you can stream online (though they seem to want to avoid overlapping with The Emmys too much) announced their winners for this year.

Those winners included Screen Junkies’ web series Honest Trailers for Best Writing and Jimmy Kimmel Live’s Mean Tweets for Best Collaboration. In addition to this win, both were up for Emmys this year as well.

We can only see this awards show getting bigger as streaming because more tied-into how you watch anything that you watch on a screen.

ABC Reviving ‘The Gong Show’ for 10 Episodes with Will Arnett Attached as Producer

One can only hope that one of the episodes features Arnett as G.O.B. Bluth doing his magic act.

40 years ago, America’s Got Talent wasn’t a thing along with the multitude of other reality competition shows that delve into the weird talents from all around the country. Back then, The Gong Show, which almost explicitly explored some of the weirdest acts they could find only to revel in hitting a gong to cut them short, was that weird talent showcase TV series.

Seems like a show that’s cut out for 2016, right?

ABC thinks so with a 10 episode order and none other than Will Arnett on board as an EP. There is no word as to who the host will be, but it wouldn’t be hard to imagine Arnett in that role as well.

FX Developing ‘Meaty’ From Samantha Irby, Jessi Klein and Abbi Jacobson

Half of Broad City plus the head of writer of Inside Amy Schumer taking on Samantha Irby’s life sounds like the right ingredients for another FX series you should keep an eye on.

Irby and Jessi Klein, who is the Inside Amy Schumer head writer, are writing and executive producing this project together with Abbi Jacobson also set to executive produce.

So, if this go to series, a good portion of the comedy landscape on television will be nicely occupied by Broad City, Better Things, Insecure, and Meaty.
