TCB Debriefing 11/27/23: The Holdovers, Colbert, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, This Is Spinal Tap 2

November 27, 2023
News
late show, scott pilgrim, scott pilgrim takes off, spinal tap, stephen colbert, the holdovers

1. Alexander Payne + Paul Giamatti = devastatingly delivered, hysterically wrought dialogue by charmingly flawed characters. The formula worked to perfection with Sideways and that same cinematic math works out in The Holdovers. Giamatti plays an even more pretentious teacher, aspiring author than he did in Sideways, which requires a bit of simmering before it gets cooking. Still, the incredulity of Giamatti and his obsession with projecting ancient civilizations at this decaying prep school as superior contrasted during Vietnam era America makes for some beautifully hilarious moments, both out of emotional deafness and rage with a big vocabulary. The humanity of Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa’s performances as two characters doomed to “hold over” during winter break with Giamatti only further highlight another signature Giamatti tragicomic performance. Don’t be surprised to see an Oscar nomination for Screenplay here.

2. Stephen Colbert got appendicitis leading to a ruptured appendix and thus, there is no Late Show this week. Thankfully, Stephen Colbert is OK and recovering and both Kimmel and The Daily Show are going to get your late night fix. Of all the reasons to go off the air in 2023, can you believe it’s not COVID?

3. With as clever and innovative as the anime spin-off/sequel/adaptation Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is, the creators of this iteration of Scott Pilgrim are happy to keep their timelines right where they are, contained within one season (Rolling Stone). The MCU would do well to take a cue here.

4. Rob Reiner has confirmed that This Is Spinal Tap 2 will commence filming in early 2024 (Deadline). With Reiner in charge, we’d hope for a sequel that lives up to the cult status of the original film, but it’ll be a curious see another Spinal Tap movie after nearly two decades of mockumentaries being some of the most lauded and most watched works in comedy (as opposed to being something groundbreaking in 1984). We hope Reiner has something truly special up his sleeve.

5. We’ll leave you with this: a sign that you’ve been in showbiz for a long time is forgetting what you ringtone sounds like because your phone is eternally set to silent or vibrate.

TCB Debriefing 11/24/23: Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, Tig Notaro/Colbert, Hasan Minhaj, YouTube Fact Checking

1. Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, the Rob Reiner documentary tribute to his dear friend and certified comedy genius, Albert Brooks, is truly illuminating and a sensational reminder of how absolutely, devastatingly funny and original Brooks was. As far as alternative comedy goes, you could draw a line from Ernie Kovacs to Albert Brooks to almost anything off-beat done on stage today and this doc makes emphatically sure that you know that and will never forget it. Required viewing for anyone into comedy or even likes laughing, even just a little bit. Albert Brooks: Defending My Life is streaming now on Max.

2. Speaking of “defending my life”, Hasan Minhaj just added a bunch of dates for his Off With His Head tour. Get your tix at hasanminhaj.com.

3. Tig Notaro was in peak Tig form on Colbert. Please enjoy.

4. We were watching this Don’t Tell set from Malik Elassal and noticed that YouTube has tacked on a Wikipedia embed for the page about how the Flat Earth is a scientifically disproven conception based off of the title of the video “Woke Flat Earthers”. We have no doubt comedians will figure a way to twist this new move to some hysterical result (and perhaps go overboard with it in the process).

5. We’ll leave you with this: Can we not do a bunch of bits about saying “happy holidays” this year? There are plenty of actual wars going on versus the fake “War on Christmas”.

TCB Debriefing 8/29/23: Strike Force Five, Starstruck, Jay Jurden, Book of Clarence

August 29, 2023
News
book of clarence, jay jurden, jeymes samuel, jimmy fallon, jimmy kimmel, john oliver, late night, rose matafeo, seth meyers, starstruck, stephen colbert, strike force five

1. The Jimmys, John, Seth, and Stephen are banding together as Strike Force Five in order to support the staff of their late night shows, which have been the productions that have suffered the longest from the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike. Kimmel, Fallon, Oliver, Meyers, and Colbert will be doing a limited run series (though plenty of episodes should be coming out) where they chat (and will hopefully provide some sort of respite from Gutfeld! being the defacto #1 late night show on the air). Strike Force Five rolls out exclusively on Spotify starting tomorrow and proceeds from the pod go to all those late night staffers, which have all probably grown some sort of strike beard by now.

2. Rose Matafeo‘s chance encounter with celebrity romance has blossomed into one of the rom com series to watch of the moment, Starstruck. Season 3 is just around the corner (Sept. 28th) on Max and you can get your first taste here.

3. The irrefutably hilarious Jay Jurden just added more dates to his Kinda Sorta Sorta Kinda North American tour. Go get tickets before they sell out (again) here.

4. Jeymes Samuel, the director behind modern day black Western The Harder They Fall, is at it again (i.e. changing the racial narrative paradigm in genre movies) with The Book of Clarence that follows a Jesus copycat in Jesus times. It almost feels like this would have been an episode straight out of the fifth season of Atlanta (if there was one). Take your first gander at The Book of Clarence here, then look for it in theaters in 2024.

5. Per item #1, late night really does need help as they’re resorting to compilations such as “Best of SNL Writers on Seth Meyers” since they’ve been off air for so very long.

Take Your First Gander at the George Carlin Doc “George Carlin’s American Dream”

The label of comedy legend is often thrown around to liberally to the point where you might wonder what necessarily takes to actually be a comedy legend. Well, you can always look at the quintessential comedy legend, the one and only George Carlin. If you’re reading this, you probably know why he is one of the most deserving of such a moniker.

Judd Apatow, Hollywood’s biggest comedy nerd, and Michael Bonfiglio (Who Are You, Charlie Brown?, Gary Gulman’s The Great Depresh) did this comedy doc on Carlin to take a look at how his comedy is so legendary and how it simultaneously still holds up today and is still so timely even from far beyond the grave. Called George Carlin’s American Dream, it’ll be another two-part docu-series that will span the life and times of the iconic comedian as well as hear from the likes of Stephen Colbert, Patton Oswalt, Kelly Carlin, W. Kamau Bell, Jerry Seinfeld, Steven Wright, Jon Stewart, Bill Burr, Bette Middler, Chris Rock, Sam Jay, and more.

Take a look for yourself at what will very likely be required viewing for all comedy aficinados/nerds/fans/comedians/industry folks/etc. with the official trailer here.

Russell Howard Finally Gets Back to America, Starting with Colbert

One of the UK’s current best comedy exports (and, consequently, one of the world’s biggest comedians), Russell Howard was supposed to go on a global tour that got was cut short back in 2020 because of, well, you know by now.

Now, on this side of things, Russell, one of the most upbeat comedians working today by the way, has hopped back on his global tour now called Respite. He’ll be working his way through North America starting next month, but kicked off his joyous arrival stateside on one of our biggest stages, The Ed Sullivan Theater at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Enjoy Russell’s cheery and spirited stand-up (that isn’t too cheery to the point of annoyance) here, then maybe go snag tickets for a date on Russell’s Respite tour near you at russell-howard.co.uk.

From Last Night’s Colbert, David Cross Is Still a Subversive Rascal When on Late Night

January 21, 2022
News
david cross, stephen colbert

Thank goodness David Cross is still doing bits on late night and foregoing the standard panel interview on any of the long standing late night talk show institutions. In fact, you can count on Cross to do something memorable and ridiculous whenever he’s invited to the couch at any network.

This time, Cross runs through all sorts of hijinks while promoting his upcoming stand-up special I’m From the Future set for release on Feb. 12th that point towards the sort of interviews that should be happening on late night, if they can happen in person. Oh yeah, there’s a new Cross special taped at Littlefield during last year’s NY Comedy Festival that you really ought to be excited for.

In the meantime, you can enjoy Cross being peak late night Cross here.

Hannah Einbinder Is Sublime in Her First Late Night Panel Interview

News
hannah einbinder, late show, stephen colbert

We don’t keep it much of a secret around here that we’re pretty big fans of Hannah Einbinder and that we have been for years. She has always had something special, even when we saw her early on at open mics beginning to formulate her nuanced, conceptual bits.

Still, outside of her act, she’s effervescent and clearly ready for the limelight. You can really see Hannah shine in this interview far better than most people doing panel on late night ever do on their first appearance. If this was an episode of Talk Show: The Game Show, Einbinder would have crushed.

Colbert mentions that Hannah’s first Emmy nomination for Hacks will assuredly be one of many and we wholeheartedly concur.

Please enjoy Hannah’s first late night interview here.

Please Watch and Enjoy’s Alex Falcone Debut Late Night Set on Colbert

Last night’s Colbert was one for the comedians. Not only did previously featured comedian Hannah Einbinder take to doing panel for the first time, but Alex Falcone notched his very first late night stand-up set.

Falcone’s set was the sort of perfectly observed material that Alex has clearly honed into the perfect degree of tightness for a late night TV set. Also, the world ought to get a great laugh and a very important lesson from his take on “the friend zone”.

We have no doubt that Alex will probably be doing plenty more late night sets/stand-up on TV in general.

So, without further adieu, enjoy his Alex Falcone’s debut set on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert here

Please Enjoy This Chat Between Maria Bamford and Stephen Colbert, One of the Last Late Show Interviews at Ed Sullivan Theatre Before Lockdown

May 12, 2020
News
late show, maria bamford, stephen colbert

As the world went into lockdown, the world of late night talk shows was thrown for a loop as to what to do. Everyday, something changed, more things closed, and crowds of people started to disappear where they would normally be. Specifically, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert attempted to do a show without a crowd still in the Ed Sullivan Theatre. Also, Colbert dressed sharply and there will professional level broadcast cameras and, at the very least, there were, probably, crew in the building that you can hear live laughs from.

On this particular taping, the splendid Maria Bamford sat down with Colbert in, of all places, the audience, as there was no one taking up any of those seats at the time, for as normal of a late night style chat as they can have. Of course, Bamford is her same magical self in chatting with Colbert, but this interview also serves an artifact of a time that is so starkly from our own even though it was a only couple of months ago.

Please enjoy this chat and look back at the not so distant past here.

Steve Martin Has a Grand Old Time Running Bits with Stephen Colbert (and Giving a Little More Info on His True Crime Comedy Series with Martin Short)

Uncategorized
interview, stephen colbert, steve martin

It should come as no surprise that comedy greats Steve Martin and Stephen Colbert being in the same room together on last night’s Late Show would spark plenty of bits, jabs, riffs, etc. (as well as genuine moment remembering Terry Jones) that harkens back to a great classic late night interview. From start to finish, Martin and Colbert had hijinks planned (or inspired in the moment) and it’s kind of what you would hope for with a Steve Martin appearance on The Late Show.

Also, Steve Martin really does have an upcoming Hulu series with Martin Short where they investigate murders, but only in the building they live in called Only Murders in the Building. He gives a little more insight what very well could be a delightful cross between My Favorite Murder and Too Much Tuna/Oh, Hello.

John Mulaney and Stephen Colbert Have an Honest to Goodness Conversation on The Late Show

January 23, 2020
Uncategorized

For the most part, interviews on late night talk shows are highly produced (i.e. a producer figures out what stories and bits the guest should do before hand) and, at this point in time, especially if you watch even a little bit of late night, you can often suss out the transparency of how artificial the chat between host and the guest is.

Every now and again, the mold gets broken by a great guest and, if the host is nimble, perceptive, and sharp enough, the conversation will not only be real, but incredibly engaging, funny, heartfelt, and so much more.

Stephen Colbert’s interview with John Mulaney last night was one such lovely conversation and, we think, CBS put the whole thing up on YouTube for you to enjoy. So, please enjoy Mulaney and Colbert’s charming back-and-forth that definitely went way deeper than whatever was pre-arranged (assuming that there were any notes for Colbert to reference at all) here.

Stephen Colbert to Host “The Late Show” Through Summer 2023

Stephen Colbert to Host “The Late Show” Through Summer 2023

As Colbert’s nightly taking-POTUS-to-task has seen him rise to the top of late night, CBS is making sure to secure their late night star right up until the next presidential election cycle (after this current one for 2020) in 2023.

The news, no matter if you read it or watch it or do both, makes it so hard to have any sort of sense with what’s going to happen in the next year and who will get elected (or reelected). With that in mind, CBS must be hedging their bets.

We do now wonder what The Late Show with Stephen Colbert might become if, let’s say, Elizabeth Warren were to become the 46th President of the United States. Less politics? More bits and remotes? Let’s hope we can get to ponder that idea more realistically.

You didn’t read that wrong. Stephen Colbert, for a bit of a change of pace on The Late Show, took to the guest seat and had his long time friend and compatriot, the great Amy Sedaris fire off questions and anecdotes from all angles.

As with the dynamic of their relationship pretty much from the start, Amy pokes and prods Stephen just right to loosen him up in a wonderful way.

Please watch and enjoy it here.

As her next special is coming soon, Hannah Gadsby is starting to hit the publicity trail, making the rounds at late night.

This stop at Colbert is particularly fun as there seems to be some genuine, well-handled confusion between Gadsby and Colbert and Hannah reveals the pet rocks that she’d like Anti-Vaxxers to have instead of kids that they won’t vaccinate.

Honestly, it would be great for the mental health of our country (and maybe the world) if Aparna Nancherla was on TV way more. Her comforting voice, very clever writing, and calm persona is what we need more of.

So, enjoy a bit of that with her set from last night’s Colbert.

Ahmed Bharoocha Tells One of the Best Jokes Ever on Religion on Colbert

May 25, 2018
Uncategorized
ahmed bharoocha, late night, late show, religion joke, stand up, stephen colbert

Even more than joking about politics, joking about religion can be even more divisive. People’s faith often guides the rest of their other beliefs and is a personal foundation that doesn’t much appreciate being shaken of poked.

That being said, the idea of a sacred cow, especially the sacred cow, makes making jokes about it even more alluring to comedians. Many have tried, but usually end up with a joke that only one side agrees with on top of usually deriding the entire concept of religion. That’s not to say that they aren’t great jokes, but they do require an open mind that many often don’t have. One of the all time great jokes in the canon of comedy by Emo Philips fits this description.

Ahmed Bharoocha performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and opened up with a joke that not only acts a defense of faith and religion, but does so in such a simply beautiful way that’s mostly inclusive of all religions. For our money, it’s a joke that will stand the test of the time.

Do watch Ahmed’s whole set, by the way, as his performance was stellar through and through.

From a mere segment to a full fledged show on a premium cable network where they can really let the satire fly, Our Cartoon President is set to have network series premiere at 8PM on Showtime.

Even though the series hits close to home for us all due to the time that we’re live in, the fact that it’s animated makes the jokes funnier and the satire a little easier to handle as you can see in this Ep. 2 clip.

Coming to Showtime on Sunday, February 11th at 8PM to Showtime will be the series premiere of Our Cartoon President, an entire animated series born out of the recurring cartoon Trump segments from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

It should be noted that this will be the second televised comedy series entirely dedicated to satirizing Trump as President and, as it’s animated, it seems much less terrifying than the reality that it’s making fun of.
