Please Enjoy John Early, Kate Berlant, and Andrew DeYoung’s Latest Short “Rachel”

Some of the best short films these days seem to come from the collaboration of John Early, Kate Berlant, and Andrew DeYoung (555, Dinner Party). There is striking balance of feeling grounded, organic, and real as well as threading a line of ridiculousness throughout that we really enjoy.

Such is the case with their latest offering, Rachel, which we won’t spoil with any sort of description. Just let it sink in over 12 min. or so here.

Short film-music video hybrids that lean heavily towards comedy seem to be trending right now and that makes up pretty happy.

This latest offering for Hot Chip’s Hungry Child not only has Martin Starr (Silicon Valley) and Milana Vayntrub (New Warriors) in a truly bizarre situation, but is the brain child of filmmaker Saman Kesh.

We’re starting to think that we might be entering a whole new golden era of music videos.

Please enjoy it on repeat here.

Please Enjoy This Sweet and Absurdist Short “The Do It Up Date”

Based off a modern fairy tale of sorts that Josh Fadem wrote, The Do It Up Date is, as we see it, pretty close to how many folks feel on a first date. By the way, it got a nod from SXSW this year and picked by Vimeo Staff.

Also, it’s Emily Ting & Andrew Barchilon and stars Bridey Elliott and Josh Fadem.

Give it a watch here.

It might be possible that John Early was destined for this role of playing an enfant terrible music video director.

Indeed, Early is brilliant as ‘John Brearly’ in this meta music video/short film for Alex Cameron’s single “Marlon Brando” directed by Jemima Kirke. John lets an ego run rampant during “the shoot” much to the dismay of Amy Zimmer, Scott Adsit, and members of Cocoon Central Dance Team, but is so damn fun to watch.

So, please give “Marlon Brando” a watch here.

Please watch and enjoy (and then think about what makes a good dinner party after) here.

Please Enjoy the Absurdist, Silent-ish Short Film “The Passage” from Phil Burgers (AKA Dr. Brown)

Phil Burgers never ceases to surprise, even if you think you know what his game is. A perennial favorite at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a star in clowning/idiot, the owner and AD at beloved LA venue Lyric Hyperion, and one of those sorts talents that can and very often take moments from 0-60 comedically in an instant.

Thus is the case with this short film The Passage, created by Burgers and directed by Kitao Sakurai. It could be thought of a postmodern execution of the silent comedy very much keeps the silly, absurd spirit of the classical silent, physical comedy from almost a century ago.

Also, this is one of the last things produced by the revived Super Deluxe and thankfully lives on courtesy of TBS.

Oh, if you don’t know about Jetzo, we think this might be a nice little intro to one of our current favorite comedy duos working today.

So, without further adieu, please enjoy The Passage here.

OR

If you’re in LA, you can come to a special release party/Q&A at the Lyric Hyperion at 10PM. Admission is free!

An inflatable screen, a DIY picnic area outside of an animation studio, and a bunch of wondrous, as stated, “messed up cartoons” is what makes Let’s What Messed Up Cartoons a pretty damn memorable evening (perhaps, one of those only in LA sort of happenings?).

In any case, it should be one of the stops on whatever you’re doing this Halloween weekend. Get more details here.

So, we highly urge you to get your tickets ($7 in advance and $10 dollars cash at door) as soon as you can for this momentous occasion.

One of the perpetual mysteries of the entertainment business from the creatives/entertainers/talents’ side is how to get decent representation.

So many factors involve an agency or management company taking you on as a client and two of them are how marketable you are and, unfortunately, how lucky you are.

From the minds of Megan Koester and Steven Feinartz, comes a darkly comedic tale of how attempting to get an agent goes horribly awry with NYTVF selection, Unmarketable.

Watch and enjoy it here.

Also, props to LA born-and-bred Eric Dadourian giving Ari from Entourage a run for his money.

Over the last few weeks, toxic masculinity has had several of its many, many heads lopped off with the unstoppable wave of sexual assault, harassment, and rape charges that have come to light.

One would hope that it’s a sign that “different time back then” is over and will not be tolerated anymore kind of like what happens in this darkly comedic, short film “men” from Jon Daly and Gil Ozeri.

Watch as they play two d-bags who embody toxic masculinity to its core and suffer accordingly here

(note: this is technically NSFW even though the social commentary here is important).

In 2011, we saw this gem “going to the store” from David Lewandowski on Channel 101. Trying to explain it without weirding people for how abstract is, we just try to let people enjoy how silly it is sans context much like we did when we first saw it.

Now, Lewandowski has a follow-up that expands on “going to the store” and even ascends to something that’s a little sublime.

So, without further adieu, enjoy ‘time for sushi”.
