What’s not to love about Paul Simon’s nephew, Taul Simon (the very funny Drew Spears, 1/3 of the brilliant rascals of LA’s Cool Shit/Weird Shit ), putting on a “music show” to spite his uncle for not letting him play at his farewell shows? Certainly, we don’t actually know if Taul has the “goods”, but a show born out of having a chip on your should is always a fun thing to watch. Just see this promo for 500 Ways to Leave Your Lover – A Nephew’s Lament above.

Also, the likes of Mike Hanford (The Birthday Boys, Comedy Bang! Bang!), Teresa Lee (Take My Wife, Cracked), Marlena Rodriguez (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Brad Evans and Nick Ciarelli (Atlantic City, Tween Fest) will be joining Taul/Drew for what’s sure to be an evening that you won’t forget even if Paul Simon himself ends up not caring.

500 Ways to Leave Your Love will be taking place next week at 10PM on Wednesday, July 18th at the Lyric Hyperion Theatre & Cafe. Tickets are $5 and you can (and should) get them here.

This show had a far too short run at the Improv. Thankfully, this improvised powerpoint show is coming back once more at Dynasty Typewriter at Hayworth Theater next week on Wed., June 27th at 8PM.

Zed Cutsinger and Andrew Michaan’s PowerPointless will also have a line-up including Natasha Leggero, Moshe Kasher, Nick Thune, Brent Weinbach, and David Dineen-Porter that’s more than up to the task of BS-ing their way through an actual PowerPoint presentation that they’ve never seen before.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Please get them here.

And Here’s the First Sketch from “The Break with Michelle Wolf”

The premiere of The Break with Michelle Wolf is only a few days away, which is, we should again note, is less than a month after her performance at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Needless to say, we’re highly anticipating what Wolf and company have up their sleeves.

So, with this first sketch that just got posted, they poke fun at shoe-horning female lead characters into clearly-written-for-male leads without changing much (this parody trailer bares a satirical resemblance to the actual movie Equity). It sets a tone that has always been Wolf’s brand of comedy, equal parts biting and silly. It looks like Sundays will now have a double dose of satirical comedy from John Oliver and Wolf.

Also, in watching this, we had a good laugh thinking of Wolf as the “strong female lead” of her own show on Netflix.

The Break with Michelle Wolf begins streaming on Sundays starting May 27th on Netflix.

Music Parody Is at Its Best on the “Punch Up the Jam” Podcast

Within the ever burgeoning art form of comedy, musical comedy is unfortunately oft-maligned, especially when it comes to parodies of popular songs.

That being said, Miel Bredouw (YouTube star, writer) and Demi Adejuyigbe (currently a writer on The Good Place) not only do a smash up job of parodying songs that they feel they can “punch up” with an extremely clever change in the lyrics (that usually takes on a much more nuanced existential perspective than the original song), but also dissecting those songs every which way they can, lyric-by-lyric. That formula plus their irresistibly charming chemistry combine to make up their great podcast Punch Up The Jam.

Miel and Demi have wonderfully tackled and punched up anything from Auld Lang Syne to Friday I’m in Love to Mambo No. 5 (done live at SXSW).

So, get in on Punch Up the Jam right here, right now.

The Late Late Show Finally Puts That Cracked-Egg-Is-Your-Brain-on-Drugs Ad In Its Place

Long ago, in the last era of big time anti-drug campaigns, there was one particular ad that suggested that your brain on illegal controlled substances was like an egg being cracked and fried on a pan.

With all the years that have passed, such an ad seems even more ridiculous. Corden’s The Late Late Show reminds us of that and points out what probably happened during the shooting of said ad.

It isn’t out of the realm of possibility that Nicholas Cage would do live commentary of one his movies.

However, that doesn’t seem to be on the horizon quiet yet and, in the mean time, we have something pretty damn close with Kenny Stevenson as Nic Cage doing said live commentary of Nic Cage movies.

This Sunday at UCB Sunset’s Inner Sanctum, he’ll be doing just that with The Rock along with guests (that may or may not also be in character) Josh Covitt, Marshall Givens and Jessica Jean Jardine.

Admission is FREE. Get more details for Nic Cagentary here.

The newest podcast at the UCB Comedy Podcast Network has so much devilish fun with the concept of guided meditation.

Matt Cutler and Eric Gersen‘s Headplace use all the tropes of a guided meditation tape (the soft voices, the imagery, the new age background music), then let their imaginations run wild in a way that we find more calming (due to the release in laughter) than actual guided meditation.

Unlike a lot of podcasts, you can enjoy more than a couple episodes a week that are short, enjoyable pieces of bizarre comedy podcast candy.

Listen and enjoy Headplace for yourself here or wherever you listen to podcasts.

The trope of overly maudlin melodramas on Lifetime is getting the Adult Swim treatment by way of the waitress and Artemis from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia playing a combative mother and daughter.

We love how it’s being billed as an “Lifetime movie made for Adult Swim”, which perhaps means that Lifetime is getting a better sense of humor about itself?

See for yourself in this promo and preview clip.

Mother, May I Dance With Mary Jane’s Fist? premieres Sun. Jan. 7th at midnight on Adult Swim.

Earlier this year, Patton Oswalt went on Jimmy Kimmel Live and breathed some “life” into “jokes” tweeted out by Mike Huckabee as Huckabee has fashioned and proliferated his own brand of humor, but has not gotten around to performing them live in a “set”.

Huckabee’s foray into comedy has continued since then and, as such, Patton has returned to attempt to tell these jokes as if they were in real stand-up setting, albeit one that’s from the 80s.
