BoJack Horseman Getting a Sixth Season at Netflix

October 30, 2018
Uncategorized
bojack horseman, netflix, renewed

Even after 5 seasons of successfully exploring so many different tones and arcs and being topical in a sincere way and having some of the best animal sight gags in entertainment history, BoJack Horseman continues to surprise, delight, and enrapture us and stand out in a very crowded field of both animation and dramedy.

We won’t be surprised if there’s an elective college course on BoJack before too long.

Congratulations on a well deserved sixth season.

Here’s Your First Look at Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj

Or, you could call this your first look at government surveillance watching Hasan do his upcoming weekly Netflix show.

In any case, if the (slightly?) fictionalized watching of Hasan Minhaj doing his topical comedy series is a new angle, which might play well in the arena occupied by Trevor Noah, John Oliver, and Samantha Bee.

We’ll be excited to see what Hasan has cooked up and if Netflix will have finally figured out how they want to do a weekly comedy show where they can’t release all the episodes at once.

Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj starts streaming Oct. 28, then releases new episodes every Sunday after that.

Netflix Is Getting Into Comedy Roasts by Ordering “Historical Roasts” to Series and Having Jeff Ross Attached

Well, it looks like Comedy Central isn’t the only place you’ll be able to find comedy roasts anymore.

Historical Roast (and Fictional Roast), for a few years now, have been putting the feet of anything from WWII to Shakespeare to Disney Princesses to the fire for fun on stages across LA in appropriate costumes (including Nerdmelt, The Comedy Store, and Dynasty Typewriter).

Given the success of Roast Battle, we thought it only a matter of time before this show created by Eddie Furth, Ryan Pigg, and Samee Junio got picked up somewhere, which just happened to be Netflix.

Similar to the way that Roastmaster General Jeff Ross brought Roast Battle to the forefront, Ross will have his stamp on the six episodes ordered for Historical Roasts.

We’ll keep our ears to the ground for when tapings happen and let you know ASAP.

Looks Like Big Mouth Season 2 Will Be Upping the Ante on How Hilariously Awful Puberty Is

If you thought Eighth Grade reminded how awkward and chaotic adolescence and puberty was, Big Mouth, the animated series that personifies hormones and teenage anxieties with monsters, seems like it will be going  a few notches higher in this regard.

See for yourself in this trailer that promises season 2 will be more NSFW than it already it is (in a fun, gross way though, of course).

All episodes of Big Mouth begin streaming on October 5th on Netflix.

Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn Are Peak Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn in “Private Life” Trailer

Over their extensive filmographies, both Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn have played a plethora of complex characters while still managing to leave an indelible stamp on every role. Whether it be Sideways, Billions, Transparent, or I Love Dick, Giamatti and Hahn have a knack for playing people that are doing their best in spite of their circumstances.

Private Life, an upcoming film that pairs these two together, provides a big canvas for them to show off and it sure looks like they show off exquistely. Also, it’ll be the latest offering from writer/director Tamara Jenkins, who also wrote and directed one of our favorite dark comedy/dramas, The Savages.

Get a taste of what’s to come in this trailer, then look for Private Life to begin streaming on Netflix starting October 5th.

This is just a friendly neighborhood reminder of what you’ll probably end up spending your whole weekend watching.

Who knew that an animated series following a misanthropic, anthropomorphized horse trying to process fame, existence, etc. peppered with clever animal puns would be one of the most poignant shows of our time and go for 5 seasons?

We had a feeling of season 1 of BoJack Horseman that this might be the case. In any case, all episodes of season 5 of BoJack are now streaming on Netflix.

Fans of Norm MacDonald Live (and Norm MacDonald in general) will be happy to know that the Netflix edition of Norm’s talk show will be a continuation of what MacDonald was already doing.

As you can see in the trailer, the mischief abounds even though it’s pretty much as stripped down as a talk show can get. All episodes will be available for you to binge next Friday, September 14th.

Four years ago, BoJack Horseman debuted on Netflix and broke new ground for being a complex comedy that featured a bold tone shift towards the end of that first season.

Ever since, BoJack has received loads of acclaim by striking a great balance between satirizing the entertainment biz and pondering the ever present existential crises of life with super clever animal jokes all while being an animated series.

This upcoming fifth season, as this trailer shows, seems game to up the ante on what has already been a pretty damn great and unforgettable ride.

Look for all episodes of season 5 of BoJack Horseman to drop on Friday, September 14th.

Pt. 2 of Netflix’s 15 Minute Comedy Specials Are Now Streaming

There’s another round of a tight 15 minutes of stand-up from all the names above as Pt. 2 of Netflix’s Comedy Lineup (we maintain that they could have come up with a better name) just started streaming today.

Similar to Pt. 1, it’s a very diverse collection of comics and many who we’ve personally enjoyed seeing ascend the stand-up ranks with their fantastic and finely honed comedy stylings to having a special on Netflix (like Aisling Bea, Emma Willmann, Kate Willett, and Max Silvestri). It also has more of that organic feel that you’d get when going to see stand-up from these folks live in person (a thing all of you should be doing if you’re not already).

You’ve got all of Labor Day Weekend to enjoy approximately two hours of Aisling, Emma, Janelle James, Josh Johnson, JR De Guzman, Kate, Matteo Lane, and Max. We can only hope this will lead to you going to see them all live doing way longer sets.

Daniel Sloss’ Two Upcoming Netflix Specials Get a Trailer

Daniel Sloss has two whole stand-up specials coming to Netflix and also likes to identify his sense of humor as very dark. Maybe that is part of the reason that those specials be dropping on Netflix on 9/11 this year? Then again, maybe Netflix wanted to release it on a Tuesday and that just so happened to line-up perfectly with their release schedule?

In any case, Daniel is one of Scotland’s funniest imports in recent memory (part of the reason why he has done stand-up on Conan more than most comedians this decade). Get a taste of what you’re in for with this clip/trailer here.

Ellen DeGeneres’ Netflix Special Coming Later This Year Will Apparently Be Called “Relatable”

Ellen DeGeneres just shot her Netflix stand-up special up in Seattle.

A lucky bunch of you on Largo’s mailing list probably got to catch glimpses of it over the last few months, but it remains largely a mystery for the rest of us. Whatever it ends up being, it very likely could be a welcome surprise since she hasn’t released a stand-up special in 15 years.

It looks like the special, as mentioned above, will be called “Relatable” and is due out later in 2018. In other times, perhaps having something titled “relatable” wouldn’t be as charged. Yet, it definitely sounds like a political statement in these times we live in where being relatable to each other often seems impossible. Also, the voice of Finding Nemo’s Dory is pretty relatable across the board, right?

In any case, we’ll be keeping a close eye out for a teaser/trailer.

Tiffany Haddish’s Next Hour Special Will Be Coming to Netflix in 2019

Just in case where you’ll be able to see Tiffany Haddish next after the bevy of movies, TV, and Groupon commercials this year, know that a new hour stand-up special is on its way to, where else, Netflix next year.

Since her last special was called “She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood!”, we’re curious as to what this next special will be called. She Ready! 2 The World Ready for Her? 2 She 2 Ready? The Last Black Unicorn Rides Again?

No matter what she calls it, this will be one of the bigger releases for Netflix next year.

Sure, Norm MacDonald didn’t end up being the host of The Late Late Show after Craig Ferguson.

However, what started out as Norm and sidekick Adam Eget hanging out on the Video Podcast Network has now upgraded to Netflix as Norm MacDonald has a Show.

The premiere is set for Fri., Sept. 14th where 10 one-hour episodes will all be released, per Netflix’s usual way of releasing content. Norm will get to chat with the likes of aforementioned Lorne Michaels and Judge Judy as well as David Letterman, Michael Keaton, M. Night Shyamalan, and Drew Barrymore.

Also, in the press release it should be noted that, apparently, “David Letterman serves as location scout”.

We’re just going to take that as a hint that Norm will be using the Netflix budget afforded to him for some top shelf Norm MacDonald hijinks.

Hasan Minhaj’s Weekly Netflix Show Will Be Called “Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj” and Premiere Oct. 28th

It’s been a long time in the works, but we think a weekly show helmed by Hasan Minhaj is well worth the wait (he’s the correspondent that should have been bumped up to hosting The Daily Show after Jon Stewart left).

The satirical title is only making us want to skip the weekend before Halloween, when the show premieres, even more.

This first promo cleverly urges “Follow us.

@hasanminhaj is used to it.” To keep tabs on it, you might indeed want to follow Hasan’s show @patriotact.

Amongst the wave of things that were unveiled during Comic-Con this weekend, Matt Groening’s newest series, Disenchanted, debuted its first trailer.

It’s the ultra clever comedy you’ve come to expect from the creator of The Simpsons, this time set in a fantasy world in the past. Though, as was the case of the distant future of Futurama, plenty of jokes will be plenty to relevant to the present day real world. We didn’t get to see much of it in the trailer, but we hope that there will be lots of signage humor in Disenchanted.

See all of this for yourself here and look for all episodes to start streaming on Netflix on Friday, August 17th.

Netflix Will Soon Have Its Own Sirius XM Comedy Channel

For those that don’t have access to Netflix (or a friend or family member’s Netflix password), but somehow have a Sirius XM subscription, you’ll soon be able to listen to stand-up, talk show programs, and other original programming from Netflix, perhaps the dominant hub for stand-up these days.

When it comes to the “original programming”, we’re curious to see if this will become a proving ground for some projects, show ideas, etc.

There’s no start date as of yet, so we will have to just wait and see how all of this pans out.

In case you didn’t know, Netflix has actually had stand-up specials on their platform for years. So, in further shining a light on comedians from around the world, they’re bringing them altogether under one banner. We’re glad this is happening as the last “global comedy event” was the wonderful Stand Up Planet hosted by Hasan Minhaj that unfortunately had one Bill Cosby as a major consultant and advisor on it.

There is no name for the series yet, but it will be coming out in 2019, presumably like all other Netflix stand-up series where everyone gets their own “episode”. We sincerely hope that they don’t pick a horribly generic name like The Standups or Comedy Lineup this time around.

Jim Jefferies’ Latest Special “This Is Me Now” Is Coming This Friday

July 9, 2018
Uncategorized

The last time Jim Jefferies seem to reach another level in comedy here in America was when he went on a rant on gun control in a comedy special.

With his next special “This Is Me Now” coming to Netflix on July 13th on the heels of his current weekly satirical show on Comedy Central, we’re intensely curious as to what Jefferies will be serving up. There are undoubtedly higher expectations this time around, considering that there is a trend right now for comedy to have a message of some sort, and Jim likes taking on traditionally controversial topics.

There is a teaser for This Is Me Now, but there are no actual bits from the special in it. As far as we can tell, Jim is poking fun at the fact that he has to “grow up” with his comedy while, in actuality, doing just that.

Netflix’s 1st Batch of 15 Minute Stand-Up Specials, The Comedy Lineup, Is Definitely Binge Worthy

If one of Netflix’s main goals in producing original content is to make things that you can’t help but watch more of, then they succeeded yet again with their first round of 15 minute stand-up specials with The Comedy Lineup.

Specials from Michelle Buteau, Ian Karmel, Taylor Tomlinson, Phil Wang, Sam Jay, Sabrina Jalees, Jak Knight, and Tim Dillon all began streaming this week and are offer a delicious morsel of stand-up from a well curated line-up (that’s pretty intersectionally represented in so many different ways). It’s more to enjoy than an average stand-up set on television that isn’t a special and, as is Netflix’s style, done looser to allow the comics to be who they really are. Once more, Netflix is blazing a trail in the stand-up arena and it’s hard to imagine them slowing down any time soon.

In fact, The Comedy Lineup is so enjoyable that you’ll forgive how generically bland the name of the whole series sounds.

So, binge away through two hours worth of stand-up this 4th of July (and the rest of the week that you’re probably treating kind of like a holiday) as The Comedy Lineup is now streaming at Netflix.

W. Kamau Bell’s Private School Negro, Wherein He Delightfully Proves Trump Is Racist, Is Now Streaming on Netflix

For a couple of years now, W. Kamau Bell has been primarily focused on his critically acclaimed CNN series United Shades of America. Just in case you forgot, Bell is a very fun stand-up to watch even though he’s a very overtly political comedian (having a warm, inviting demeanor might be a good place to start when doing effective political comedy these days).

His new hour Private School Negro is a great reminder how jubilant and jovial Kamau can be while delving into potentially divisive material and still make it all work. Even though he spends several minutes on a bit focused on Trump undeniably being a racist (and his supporters who say you can’t really call him a racist), it’s done up in such a playful way that those exhausted on Trump humor might still enjoy it.

Another way that Kamau deals with talking about politics and race so well in this special is that he brings humanity to it, specifically in sharing stories about raising his daughters who are biracial. It’s both sweet and offers perspective in what is, often times, mostly an ideological fight.

All in all, Kamau has made a political comedy special that is very much of the time, but, thankfully, has some legitimate hope in it.

W. Kamau Bell: Private School Negro is now streaming on Netflix.

Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee Season 10 Gets Full Trailer Done Up Like Vintage Commercial

One underlying penchant of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee is Jerry Seinfeld’s love for classic ads. It makes sense given his affinity for cars of the past.

So, Jerry sells season 10 (coming to Netflix on July 6th) in this trailer as if it were an add for some home appliance in the 50s (even going so far as to do most of it up in black and white).

At this point, the freewheeling hangout/interview series knows it formula and how to execute quite well. Really, you can almost see that episodes with Kate McKinnon, Mulaney, Chappelle, Galifianakis will almost certainly deliver.

In Hannah Gadsby’s Hour “Nanette”, Gadsby Reveals and Undoes the Seams of Comedy to Properly Tell Her Story of Sexual Assault

Much of 2018 is left, but we’re already thinking that Aussie comedian Hannah Gadsby and her new special Nanette, now streaming on Netflix as of this week, will be talked about for quite some time.

There are so many facets to it that, we think, demand such attention.

First off, Gadsby, like the recently released Rape Jokes from Cameron Esposito, confronts the topic of sexual abuse and assault by sharing her story. Gadsby does so by joking about it and then stripping away the humor to reveal the truth (and to also get closure for herself and make other victims of sexual abuse and assault feel less alone).

The contrast between the two angles lends to Gadsby also sharing her personal philosophy on how comedy exactly works, down to the very DNA of it. From this almost critical dissection of comedy, Gadbsy goes on to suggest that she might have to step away from comedy as she wants to present the truth, warts and all, no matter how uncomfortable it may be.

With this mix, Nanette is an hour that really is dramedy more than it is a simply labeled stand-up comedy special. There are funny, charming bits and passages that are incredibly intense and effective, both of which Hannah manages to weave in her expertise in art history as well.

So, we highly urge you to go see all this for yourself in Gadsby’s Nanette on Netflix.
