November 21, 2023
News
kara klenk, law and order, live podcast, liza treyger, nyc comedy, svu, that's messed up

Of the wide ranging podcast subgenre that is comedians rewatching episodes of institutional television shows, one of the best out there is Liza Treyger and Kara Klenk‘s That’s Messed Up. Not only is there plenty to please the most exacting true crime fan with deep dives into the real life stories behind episodes of Law & Order: SVU, but Liza and Kara’s whipsmart comedic instincts make for an enthralling listen. The duo really make it stand out from it being your typical rewatch podcast.

They’re such a power duo with That’s Messed Up they’re currently on tour and they’ll be coming through to NYC at City Winery on Sat. Dec. 16th at 6PM starting at $30 and you best get your tickets here quick. Dun dun.

Pick of the Day: The Lesbian Agenda with Sophie Santos (in NYC & LA) 6/13 & 6/28

Before even acknowledging that its Pride Month, any time of the year is a great time of year to catch Sophie Santos‘ quest for queer dominance via her creation, The Lesbian Agenda. That said, it’s Pride and it’s an especially good time to go support great queer artists of every background, especially when it comes to live comedy.

The Lesbian Agenda has already taken over both coasts by firmly planting roots in NYC and LA, which is a pretty great start to cultural domination in the U.S.

In fact, there are upcoming dates for both cities with The Lesbian Agenda taking over The Bell House in Brooklyn on Mon. Jun. 13th and Dynasty Typewriter in LA on Tues. Jun. 28th, both at 7:30PM local time. Both have incredibly stacked, festival-worthy line-ups including:

NYC:
Ashley Gavin
Sirbaby Girl
Matt Rogers
Sabrina Wu
Julia Shiplett
Jess Henderson
Maya Deshmukh as Cara Delevingne
Che Diaz

LA:

Cameron Esposito
and also Che Diaz

Tickets are $15 and $20 respectively and you can (and very much should) go get them here and here.

Pick of the Day: Fake Birthday with Caitlin Cook and A.J. Holmes (in LA) 11/14

One of NYC’s most fun variety shows is the comedy and music mash-up at Fake Birthday with Caitlin Cook and A.J. Holmes. Holmes is a Broadway dynamo and Cook has toured the globe with her über clever musical comedy (she did a whole solo musical comedy show based on bathroom graffiti). Together, they have been the duo at the core of Fake Birthday and with their musical comedy powers combined (and a stellar line-up of guests), they’ve made quite the spot for themselves in the thriving NYC comedy scene.

So, Cook and Holmes are stopping into LA for an exclusive show at Silverlake Lounge, which, if you’re in and around LA, you absolutely make your Silverlake to catch. They’ve gathered an exemplary LA line-up with Atsuko Okatsuka, Naomi Ekperigin, Zach Zucker, Langston Kerman, Liza Treyger, and Ethan Kuperberg all joining with their own grand comedy stylings in between original songs from Cook and Holmes.

This LA edition of Fake Birthday is set for Sun. Nov. 14th at Silverlake Lounge at 8PM PT. Tickets are $16.95 and you ought to go snag them right now (especially since it’ll be AJ Holmes’ actual birthday for this Fake Birthday).

Pick of the Day: An Evening with Butt & Friends 8/14

News

If you’re looking for a hard break from reality right now and a nice cruise through the absurd, look no further than the sketch duo Butt (Joe McAdam & Chris Stephens). We feel lucky to have enjoyed some of the most brilliantly daft sketch comedy in person over the last few years and we have no doubt that they’ll cook up something as amazing and unabashedly silly for a live-stream.

Dynasty Typewriter, one of the main venues where they got to pull such shenanigans as introducing a dating app based off of different user-submitted pictures of Yoda and nothing else, is presenting a special virtual Evening with Butt & Friends next month, Fri. Aug. 14th at 7PM PT/10PM ET.

Joining Joe and Chris will be quite the very special handful of guests including Eddie Pepitone, Liza Treyger,  and Tommy McNamara.

For all of this, tickets are only $5-$10, which is a steal if you ask us. Go get tickets for An Evening with Butt & Friends here.

Pick of the Day: Memories with Liza Treyger 6/18

News
clark jones, Drew Anderson, kara klenk, kenny deforest, littlefields, liza treyger, marie faustin, megan gailey, Sydney Washington

OK, there’s nothing complicated here about Memories with Liza Treyger.

Truly, some of the best comedians in the entire country (that you need to know if you don’t already) are going to share some stories because we all can’t help but reminisce of our lives and times back in February while still in lockdown in June. As it’s the likes of comedians Liza Treyger, Kenny DeForest, Clark Jones, Drew Anderson, Megan Gailey, Kara Klenk, Sydney Washington, Marie Faustin, and Aminah Imani sharing stories, their tales really ought to be something to relish.

Also, partial proceeds will go to benefitting the Food Bank for NYC.

Memories with Liza Treyger is set for Thurs. Jun. 18th at 4PM PT/7PM ET.

Donate, RSVP, and get more details here.

Dubbed as “The Jokey Show”, Whitmer Thomas is indeed taking his monthly slot at The Satellite and having all the comics dress up as the fictional character from DC Comics, The Joker (which will even be more intriguing considering nearly all of the line-up is comprised of women). Apart from that, we’re guessing some of them will be doing a normal stand-up set, but, then again, maybe they’ll try doing stand-up as some iteration of The Joker, anywhere from Cesar Romero to Joaquin Phoenix.

In any case, we’re fully on board for this stunt and whatever it ends up being and definitely think you should be in attendance to see what happens. Also, the line-up is fantastic with-or-without a Joker costume. Get tickets here.

TruTV Is Developing Projects from Liza Treyger, Austin Martinez, Rose Schlossberg, The Kloons, and Michael Torpey

In the whirlwind of upfronts these last several days, there are some things that we’d like to mention now as we didn’t get around to them right when they were announced.

In addition to TruTV’s current solid slate full of returning series like Adam Ruins Everything and Those Who Can’t as well as the upcoming new show Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters, they’ve got plenty in development to be excited about

Specifically:
-a Liza Treyger sitcom pilot
-a musically inclined sketch comedy pilot from Molly Austin and Shamikah Martinez AKA Austin Martinez (the comedy duo featured in Rachel Dratch’s Late Night Snack)
-a how to apocalypse survival guide comedy pilot End Times Girls Club from Rose Schlossberg
-presentation of a fake ad competition from The Kloons
-presentation of a game show that challenges what people studied in college in order to pay of their student debt from Michael Torpey

It’s almost like that time where TruTV almost exclusively made reality TV was long, long ago.

Watch Nate Bargatze and Liza Treyger’s Late Night Sets from This Week

In this particular political atmosphere of the moment, non-political comedy can get lost in the shuffle of Trump and Hillary based humor.

With that in mind, you should watch the recent stand-up sets of Nate Bargatze on The Tonight Show and Liza Treyger on Late Night. They’re both tight sets and are politics free, which is something we’re looking forward to seeing more of after this Tuesday.

You’ll be treated to the stand-up of Cameron Esposito, Eugene Mirman, Janeane Garofalo, Beth Stelling, Aparna Nancherla, Kurt Metzger, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Liza Treyger, the Lucas Brothers, Byron Bowers, Sean Patton, Sam Morril, James Davis, Ian Abramson, Sean Donnelly, Thomas Dale, Ahmed Bharoocha and Emo Philips.

Part of a great comedy cultural exchange between the U.S. and Canada comes around during the JFL Montreal Comedy Festival when JFL also shoots their stand-up showcase series, Funny as Hell.

As past episodes have been streamed plenty on Seeso, Seeso has opted to make the series more known in the States, especially because of its heavy use of U.S. talent, to order a sixth season that’ll offered on NBC’s comedy streaming service.

There will be more names that’ll be added to the series during the festival, but that line-up alone is reason enough to go watch it.

They’ve already got one going with James Davis’ Swag-A-Saurus.

The volatile media of Snapchat continues to grow in popularity and, as such, Comedy Central is getting on board with planning to do more shows soon with the likes of folks that we really dig: Liza Treyger, Nikki Glaser, Michelle Wolf, and Yassir Lester.

We’ll be curious to see if they can drive people to use Snapchat for the first time in order to see these shows.
