TCB Debriefing 11/30/23: Moontower, Kimmel/Aidy Bryant, Leo Reich, Daily Wire Adult Animated Series

November 30, 2023
News
aidy bryant, austin comedy, daily wire, jfl laughs, jimmy kimmel, Leo Reich, moontower

1. Moontower JFL Austin makes their first line-up announcement, so plan accordingly.

2. Jimmy Kimmel is, of course, hosting the Oscars again and Aidy Bryant, a little more surprisingly, is hosting the Spirit Awards next year. Kimmel will probably do another solid job and become this generation’s poster boy for The Oscars, but we hope that Aidy uses her husband Conner O’Malley in a bit, if not several for the Spirit Awards telecast.

3. Take a gander at Leo Reich‘s first special, Literally Who Cares? coming direct to HBO (then probably watched by you at Max). As far as Gen Z comedy specials go, Leo is who putting their money on.

4. Conservative entertainment brand The Daily Wire is trying their hand at an adult animated series with the likes of Adam Carolla and Candace Owens set for the voice cast (Deadline). Get ready to be upset?

5. We’ll leave you with this: Anyone’s Spotify Wrapped have a comedian as their top artist?

TCB Debriefing 11/14 & 11/15/23: David Drake, Chicken Run, John Oliver/Pūteketeke, Jon Stewart, Coyote vs. Acme, Jimmy Kimmel/Oscars, Kevin Hart

November 15, 2023
News
aardman, annapurna, chicken run, coyote vs acme, david drake, jimmy kimmel, john oliver, jon stewart, kevin hart, mark twain prize, netflix, oscars

1. Though self-deprecation is one of the most common modes of stand-up comedy, very few comedians are actually good enough to pull it off as an entire facet of their onstage persona. This is where NYC staple David Drake thrives. Drake’s debut hour, That’s It, special showcases the precarious balance that he achieves of savagely making fun of how crestfallen his life is, but being cool, calm, and collected about it all the same time. Drake’s career as an under-the-table mover or an existential love crisis involving some M or AO rated video game is shared with enough candor, but enough comedic/emotional distance to illicit big laughs/applause for the whole hour. Essentially, the simple, but very hard trick of making fun of yourself as a comedian is getting the audience, on an unconscious level, to know that you’re actually OK (but not so OK that it sounds like you’re flat out lying). A la the name of the special, ‘that’s it’ and Drake does that pretty flawlessly. Enjoy That’s It now for free at your convenience on YouTube here.

2. The charm of Aardman remains undeniable as the sequel to Chicken Run, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, unveils its first official trailer. Their charm as a studio is so strong with stop animation and delightful British sensibilities that we’d wager this will probably fare better than the MCU’s The Marvels and Pixar’s Elemental when all is said and done.

3. John Oliver succeeded in running away with New Zealand’s Bird of the Century contest as the Pūteketeke won with a resounding landslide to the tune of 300K votes (2nd place didn’t cross the threshold of 20K votes) (NPR) after doing a segment on Last Week Tonight, buying billboards all across the planet, and appearing on Fallon to promote. This is proof positive that American/British meddling in the rest of the world is alive and well.

4. Apple might not get away with citing “creative differences” in cancelling The Problem with Jon Stewart this year (Reuters). Stewart’s commentary on China and Apple’s business ties in China might amount to some very (deserved) hot water in Congress for the tech giant.

5. After being shelved as a tax write-off and drawing the ire of a strike-weary Tinseltown and Internet, Warner Discovery has changed course on the live action/animation hybrid Coyote vs. Acme being shopped around for another distributor, which should mean that the general public will get to see it somewhere in the not so distant future (Deadline). To add insult to injury to AMPTP poster boy, David Zaslav, preview screenings from Hollywood/comedy luminaries Phil Lord and Chris Miller only garnered praise making the attempted write-off seem even more brazen and ridiculous.

6. Jimmy Kimmel will return to host The Oscars in 2024 marking his 4th time hosting the legendary awards ceremony (Variety). That still leaves plenty of room to catch up to Billy Crystal and Bob Hope, but we honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Jimmy surpasses both of them (after all, his studio is only across the street from where the awards have happened for so long).

7. Kevin Hart will be the latest recipient for the Mark Twain Prize for Humor, one of comedy’s most prestigious awards, specifically awarded to a comedian that can be credited with changing public discourse with their comedy. Any takers on how many presenters will bring up The Oscars in their speeches “honoring” Hart?

8. We’ll leave you with this: We’d like to wholeheartedly remind you that comedy is, truly and very deeply, subjective.

TCB Debriefing 9/20/23: COVID-19 Gets Shepherd/Kimmel, Luenell, Ryan Reynolds, Ms. Pat, Nate Craig, Voy! Voy! Voy!

September 20, 2023
News
covid-19, jimmy kimmel, luenell, ms. pat, nate craig, netflix, ryan reynolds, sherri shepherd

1. Sherri Shepherd, Jimmy Kimmel, and the staff of a Steve Martin/Martin Short show all got COVID-19 and have had to postpone/cancel whatever shows they were doing (THR). This is great time to remember that “endemic” doesn’t mean “disease free”.

2. Take a gander at the Luenell‘s Netflix special, Town Business, with the official trailer. Curiously, not only is it presented by Dave Chappelle, but branded as Chappelle’s Home Team. Wonder if they have a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy with pronouns on that team.

3. Ryan Reynolds will be the latest recipient of the Robin Williams Legacy of Laughter in support of Glenn Close’s Bring Change to Mind org, a children’s mental health NPO (THR). They would have to probably not invite Deadpool to this, right?

4. Ms. Pat will add judge to her resume by taking up a gavel and presiding over Ms. Pat Settles It on BET on Oct. 18th (Deadline). If there’s eventually some sort of competitive reality show that will pit Ms. Pat against Judge Judy and Chrissy Teigen, we won’t be surprised in the slightest.

5. Nate Craig, who released one hell of a special this year with Live at the Green Mill, has got some tour dates all around the country. Go get tix at natecraig.com/calendar.

6. Another country is going to submit a comedy to AMPAS for Oscar consideration. This time, Egypt is going with Omar Hilal’s Voy! Voy! Voy! a sports comedy about a man with normal vision trying his fortunes playing blind football (Deadline). Honestly, it should get some sort of distribution deal on the premise alone.

7. We’ll leave you with this: Guess Vegas is still aggressively relaxed on their COVID-19 measures.

TCB Debriefing 8/29/23: Strike Force Five, Starstruck, Jay Jurden, Book of Clarence

August 29, 2023
News
book of clarence, jay jurden, jeymes samuel, jimmy fallon, jimmy kimmel, john oliver, late night, rose matafeo, seth meyers, starstruck, stephen colbert, strike force five

1. The Jimmys, John, Seth, and Stephen are banding together as Strike Force Five in order to support the staff of their late night shows, which have been the productions that have suffered the longest from the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike. Kimmel, Fallon, Oliver, Meyers, and Colbert will be doing a limited run series (though plenty of episodes should be coming out) where they chat (and will hopefully provide some sort of respite from Gutfeld! being the defacto #1 late night show on the air). Strike Force Five rolls out exclusively on Spotify starting tomorrow and proceeds from the pod go to all those late night staffers, which have all probably grown some sort of strike beard by now.

A post shared by Jimmy Fallon (@jimmyfallon)

2. Rose Matafeo‘s chance encounter with celebrity romance has blossomed into one of the rom com series to watch of the moment, Starstruck. Season 3 is just around the corner (Sept. 28th) on Max and you can get your first taste here.

3. The irrefutably hilarious Jay Jurden just added more dates to his Kinda Sorta Sorta Kinda North American tour. Go get tickets before they sell out (again) here.

4. Jeymes Samuel, the director behind modern day black Western The Harder They Fall, is at it again (i.e. changing the racial narrative paradigm in genre movies) with The Book of Clarence that follows a Jesus copycat in Jesus times. It almost feels like this would have been an episode straight out of the fifth season of Atlanta (if there was one). Take your first gander at The Book of Clarence here, then look for it in theaters in 2024.

5. Per item #1, late night really does need help as they’re resorting to compilations such as “Best of SNL Writers on Seth Meyers” since they’ve been off air for so very long.

A Meditation on Mike Lindell Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live in a Claw Machine (Yes, That Really Happened)

February 3, 2023
News
james adomian, jimmy kimmel, jimmy kimmel live, mike lindell

The intention of satire is to highlight the oft-taken-for-granted absurdities of the real world through cartoonish or ironic depictions that are even more heightened (and often comedic because of it). With that in mind, where is satire’s sharpened point when the exaggeration is moot because, well, the real world absurdity decided they wanted to be in on the bit, no matter how much they’re debasing themselves?

Such is the quandary presented on this week’s Jimmy Kimmel Live when frequent monologue target Mike Lindell, the troubled CEO of My Pillow, not only agreed to appear yet again on Jimmy Kimmel Live, but agreed to do so in a claw machine, at Jimmy’s request, only to be hysterically discovered, also again, by Kimmel’s go to Lindell impersonator, the brilliant James Adomian. Throughout most of the interview, which was still very funny despite how unbelievable this all felt, there was a lower third, which doubled as a My Pillow sales reminder and a place to comedically tighten the screws on Lindell with “promo codes” that read “CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS NUT AGREED TO DO THIS?” and “WE’RE GOING TO LEAVE HIM IN THERE”.

Lindell guffawed the entire time in addition to repeating his own bit of trying to give kids the toy prizes that he was submerged in while uttering “It’s a rigged game!” It’s hard to imagine something more ridiculous than the real Mike Lindell being interviewed while seated in a game devised for impatient children and then having to face a caricature of himself pretending to be in crisis (and that includes losing out on a campaign to be a RNC Chair by a massive landslide after boasting he was leading in polls over and over).

One has to wonder is this even satire at this point or adding to insult to injury since the injured asked to be hilariously insulted? There are points at which satire is so heightened that it ceases to be comedic and, perhaps, this is the reverse? Is it better to describe this as “gonzo comedy” because of Lindell’s involvement in his own ridicule (and note that Kimmel doesn’t really hold back in that regard)?

Donald Trump proved to be a similar challenge as it was difficult to be more outrageous, for comedic purposes, than what Trump really said and did during his time as POTUS. However, Trump would never take part in a bit where he was the punchline or the butt of the joke. Arguably, being a punchline at the Seth Meyers-hosted White House Correspondents Dinner is what bolstered him to run for office in the first place. Lindell, on the other hand, seems glad at the opportunity to laugh at his own expense, but in a far different, much more performative way than at a comedy roast. It feels as though he’s laughing the whole time to appear as though Kimmel’s jabs at him are ineffective, but, as you can see in the clip above, it’s absolutely baffling that he wants to come off as though he is having a good time when he is being made out to be the most ridiculous thing in a pile of toys.

It could be very easy to see this particular appearance as an outlier when it comes to what political comedy and satire are trending towards today. However, there is a parallel, unsettling feeling here to Elon Musk’s episode of SNL and how awkward the whole affair ending up being (as well as it being foreshadowing of how farcical he would be when taking over Twitter). We can’t imagine where Mike Lindell will head to or what he will do next, but coming back into a position of being taken seriously is likely not one such possibility. There’s an uncanny valley feeling to these incidents and, as far as we can gather, a reflection of objective truth being more disjointed than ever in 2023, even when it’s supposed to be a joke.

James Adomian’s Mike Lindell Comes Face to Face with the Real(?) Mike Lindell

April 29, 2021
News
james adomian, jimmy kimmel, jimmy kimmel live, mike lindell

Jimmy Kimmel Live could have kept tapping the brilliant James Adomian for his masterful impersonation of My Pillow’s Mike Lindell and that, by itself, would have been a very satisfying running bit.

Yet, the late night gods were dreaming about something a bit bigger and getting a little bit gonzo with the whole thing. Jimmy Kimmel, after dedicating several minutes of his monologue that he has dedicated to roasting Mike Lindell, invited him on the show and, surprisingly (and against the advice of everyone) accepted the invitation.

We had a feeling that Adomian’s Lindell might be part of a bit within and around Lindell chatting with Kimmel, but what actually happened was so much better. Jimmy had the latter half of his monologue centered on dealing with a severely disheveled Lindell as played by Adomian. Of course, it was hysterical and thrilling with the real Mike Lindell lurking around backstage.

Then, Kimmel brings out the (supposedly) real Mike Lindell and has a somewhat jovial conversation that does eventually turn to trading jokes about Mike’s former crack addiction for Lindell, yet again, voicing some of his more wild beliefs about voter fraud. In the last two minutes, Adomian comes out to do his Lindell to Lindell himself. It’s amazing and it kind of left Mike with no moves except to laugh at the (only slightly) funhouse mirror version of himself, which, as you can imagine, doesn’t happen too often.

Well, Adomian has actually gotten to do that quite a bit including with Bernie Sanders and Andy Kindler because, well, James is just that magical.

Jimmy Kimmel Live Was All in Honor of Fred Willard Last Night

News

The passing of Fred Willard happened only a few days ago and his absence is still reverberating through the millions and millions of people he brought joy and laughter to.

Certainly, Jimmy Kimmel felt the loss deeply as Willard was a dear friend and a very, very frequent bit player on Jimmy Kimmel Live. So, last night, Kimmel dedicated the entire episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live to the memory of comedy legend Fred Willard.  Kimmel himself personally honored him by recounting some of his favorite memories in working with Fred as well as running down a plethora of characters that he has played for Jimmy over the years.

Even while sleeping, it’d seem that Taika is still pretty damn adorable.

David Letterman Offers Up His Side of the Story in Gifting Conan O’Brien a Horse

Last week, Conan O’Brien stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and told the story of how David Letterman sent a horse to Conan’s soundstage on the Warner Bros. lot and how much of a nightmare that ended up being.

Turns out Conan suspicions of Letterman sending a gift that was more of a joke than anything else was true, but things didn’t work out exactly how Dave would have liked.

On last night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, Letterman explained how he really wanted the prank gift to work, then bemoaned how it, technically, worked more effectively (in the sense of causing Conan distress) than initially intended.

Ever the prankster himself, Jimmy Kimmel jumped in with a perfect button to this story at 4:58 of this clip of the interview.

Jimmy Kimmel’s Monologues on Health Care Show That Late Night Isn’t Just About Jokes Anymore

September 23, 2017
Uncategorized
graham cassidy bill, healthcare reform, jimmy kimmel, late night, late night history, political comedy, tv history

Jimmy Kimmel, former co-host of The Man Show, would now seem to be a sort of conscience in the ongoing struggle for healthcare in the United States.

If you consider the gravity of that idea, it’s a curious crossroads that we’ve come to in regards to comedy actually affecting change as opposed to just commenting on it. May it be “gonzo comedy” (i.e. becoming an active part of the joke that you’re making) perhaps?

Only in rare times of tragedy (9/11, Charlie Hebdo attacks Trump getting elected) do late night hosts take a much more sobering tone that leans less on jokes and more on emotional resonance. Also, the idea that comedians can actually affect change directly on a socio-political level with their comedy was a fever dream at best for a very long time.

For instance, comedian Dick Gregory, RIP, actually put action behind his razor sharp wit to make change happen with civil rights by joining in at marches, speaking out at rallies, etc. on top of being a groundbreaking, outspoken comedian.

Yet, in these topsy, turvy, non-sensical, surreal times where everything is getting “turned on its head”, the words of comedians are not only getting more barb-laden, but they’re actually getting much more serious much more often as well.

Years ago, Jon Stewart took on Mad Money’s Jim Cramer on The Daily Show in a planned attack forsaking humor, even satirically, for the intention of clearly pointing out injustice. That wasn’t the norm in late night back then even though Stewart rose to an even more revered status after that interview.

Nowadays, Stephen Colbert takes several direct shots at Trump on a nightly basis, Conan O’Brien is virtually a goodwill ambassador, and John Oliver and Samantha Bee both make their ideologies clear within their roasting of various topics as well issue some sort of call to action. In fact, Colbert has been noted to overtake Fallon in ratings these past several months because of the more overtly political comedy that happens on Late Night with Stephen Colbert versus The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

This brings us to Jimmy Kimmel, a late night host so apolitical that he had Donald Trump on and suffered none of the Internet’s scorn like Fallon did for having Trump on The Tonight Show and jostling his hair.

Earlier this year, Kimmel gave one of the most sincere late night monologues in history (try thinking of another monologue where a late night host cried more on camera than Jimmy) by recounting the story of how his newborn son had to undergo heart surgery to live. The ordeal made Jimmy think of all the other babies that might have a similar condition that wouldn’t be afforded the same medical attention under proposed GOP healthcare bills intended to replace Obamacare.

This led to Jimmy chatting with Senator Bill Cassidy about a new GOP healthcare bill that would pass the “Jimmy Kimmel Test” for having no exclusions of pre-existing conditions among other things. That segment was from an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live taped four months ago.

Just this past week, Kimmel found that the Graham-Cassidy Bill that Senator Cassidy had been working on had not fulfilled the promises that the Senator made to Jimmy on his show. Jimmy has not only taken Cassidy to task almost every night this week, but done so in a way that comes across more as a PSA than a late night monologue.

Tuesday night’s monologue was most definitely a call-to-action almost entirely devoid of any sort of jokes. Wednesday and Thursday made sure to have some of the tension broken by some roast style jokes, but Kimmel is now clearly perceived to actually have a dog in the fight for healthcare reform now, going toe-to-toe with elected officials.

Again, such a notion might seem odd, but it’s most certainly an echo of the zeitgeist and how splintered the public trust in government is.

This is as about a good of a time as any to remember that one of the enduring qualities of the late night talk show format is its ability to comment on the day’s events after they happen. The inherent tension in world events sets up a perfect opportunity for one liner jokes or even deep dive segments to highlight the absurdity of it all as quickly as network television can.

The news cycle moves so wickedly quick in 2017 that it almost burdens late night shows to cleverly make fun of it all. It may just be easier now to use the platform to, as Jon Stewart had done, just point out “what’s going on” as they see it instead of worrying so much about where the laughs come in.

Whether Kimmel will end up actually making a long lasting, significant difference in American health care has yet to be seen. To the point of this piece, it also has yet to be seen whether outright calling U.S. senators out for lying and then, subsequently, cracking jokes about their appearance and behavior will lead to said difference.

Jimmy Kimmel taking on staunch stance and repeatedly not backing down on healthcare does show one important thing: being neutral in late night is becoming less and less of an option.

Jimmy Kimmel and James Corden Play a Late Night Host Version of Truth or Dare with Revolting Food

When it comes to what late night hosts think of each other, there is, currently, a very thick cloud of mystery. Publicly, most will say that they have camaraderie with each other like any other profession even though ratings technically pit them against each other on a nightly basis.

Will we ever know what they really think of each other like we kind of did between Jay Leno and David Letterman?

Well, The Late Late Show’s Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts is a somewhat heightened version of truth or dare backed with food that’s normally reserved for Andrew Zimmern. Jimmy Kimmel was a guest and got to play the game with James Corden, which really shows how much both are dedicated to keeping up appearances.

Yet, this dead-on impression of Tracy Morgan that he did during his recent appearance of Kimmel might be a good place to start.
